ather’s Day is June 16. As I write this column, I’m planning a visit to see my dad. Dad is 86 and has some health issues that keep him from going out very often. But I want to celebrate this holiday and recognize my wonderful dad in a way that will be fun and comfortable for him. I know what Dad likes best: getting the family together for a meal. We sometimes have a cookout in my brother’s backyard or snacks right in Dad’s apartment. I sometimes run out for Chinese takeout (Dad’s favorite: pork chop suey). And when he feels up to it, we take a short drive to his favorite restaurant for a corned beef sandwich. Older parents don’t want a lot of presents; they usually have everything they need. But photos of family members are always welcome. We rarely take the time to print out photos anymore! That’s why a framed photo or small photo album is a welcome gift for any dad for Father’s Day. Looking over old photo albums is fun for everyone, and you might learn some family lore while you do it— maybe even a family secret. We seem to have misplaced Dad’s record albums, but I hope to uncover them and play my dad some Ella Fitzgerald. We both love her. Thanks, Dad, for all you have done for me. Men’s Health Month J

une is National Men’s Health Month. During the month of June, we are raising awareness about men’s health by promoting healthy living, encouraging regular health screenings, and educating men about their specific health issues and risks.

Michelle Tinger, a member of the Coastal Carolina Camera Club, noticed the summer flowers on our cover one morning on the east side of Sunset Beach. “I was taking pictures of the pelicans and gulls,” Tinger says. “As I was walking back to my car, I saw this lovely cluster of gaillardia (also known as “blanket flowers”) against a dune fence.” You’ll find these flowers blooming all summer along the dunes and other sandy spots in Brunswick County.

According to a recent article published by ClevelandClinic.org, men over 50 should follow these tips to live a healthy lifestyle: 1. Follow a healthy diet 2. Maintain a healthy weight 3. Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night 4. Be physically active 5. Don’t smoke 6. If you consume alcohol, limit to 1 or 2 drinks a day 7. Get routine exams and screenings 8. Stay social

You may have heard these tips before, but for men over 50, what does this really look like? Let’s break a few of these tips down and talk about the proven results of living a healthy lifestyle. What does it mean to eat a healthy diet and why does it matter? Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat dairy products, and lean proteins are the best choices. For heart health and weight management, it’s important to eat foods that are low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and added sugars. These simple guidelines can help men over age 50 reduce their risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some types of cancer.

Walter Owens works out at the Brunswick Center at Calabash. Some 90 percent of our male participants attend fitness classes or use our gym 2 to 4 times a week.

“Cooking with Carol” class here at the Center at Calabash to learn how to prepare quick, healthy dishes at home. What are the recommended routine exams and screenings for men over 50, and why are they important? Screenings look for diseases in their early stages, before symptoms develop. Men over 50 should have regular colonoscopies, blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests, and prostate checks. Consult a physician about which screenings you should get.

activity helps reduce the risk of some diseases, including dementia. How often should men over 50 exercise? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise a week and musclestrengthening activities two or more days a week. That can look like as little 20 minutes a day! Have you tried out one of the group fitness classes or our fitness room here at the Center at Calabash yet? See our activity calendar for the month of June and join in on the fun! Here at the Brunswick Center at Calabash we are doing our part to provide our male participants with a variety of programs and activities that give them the opportunity to take charge of their health. To gain additional information about our programming, we asked male participants to take a quick survey, and here’s what we learned: 

90% participate in group fitness classes or utilize our center’s gym 2-4 times a week

80% attend health discussions, classes, and presentations

85% participate in monthly health screenings offered at the center

90% have reported overall improvement in physical and/or mental health

95% reported that their social life was enhanced

So if you are looking for a community that is embracing these healthy habits and striving to be the best they can be after 50, look no further than the Brunswick Center at Calabash!

Travel Tips

Before you leave home, make copies of your travel documents. If they’re lost, you can call home and get important numbers.

By Joan Leotta

camera battery when I could have been on the beach.

any articles advocate packing light when traveling. It’s true! But packing smart—that is, including essential items—also should be part of your vacation strategy.

This list has been honed over years of traveling by car, plane, bus, in-country and abroad.

Sometimes it’s easier to have things with you than to search them out. I once had to visit ten stores to find a

1. Travel Documents. Be sure to have the correct ID in your carry-on, but also leave photocopies of that document (and a list of your credit card numbers) with a friend at home. If something gets lost, the copies will help you replace it with less hassle. Keep a copy of your itinerary and all reservations in chronological order in an envelope (I use a clear plastic envelope). 2. Snacks. Since I have food allergies and need to eat at regular intervals, carrying my own food is important. Prepackaged nut and dry fruit snacks are convenient. When starting the trip, I often pack a sandwich. While on the trip, I add fresh fruit to my day bag. Even if you do not have special food issues, it is wise to carry a few snacks in case there are trip delays.

Filling, protein-filled snacks can carry you through many a travel delay or a long waiting line.

3. A zippered case for chargers, electric current converters, and an extra SD card and battery for your camera.. Even if you do not have a lot of electronic items, a little case will help you remember

Travel Tips

If you’re traveling this summer, here are five things to put on your packing checklist not to leave your charger in the hotel.

4. Socks and a pair of slippers. Your feet are going to be powering you about all day. They deserve care. I have found my feet really benefit from changing into slippers at the end of the day. Socks are important in case your foot is chafed. If you are applying cream to sore feet at night, the sock will help absorb it. 5. Day bag. I carry a reusable shopping bag with a zipper for day travel since my carry-on is back in the room holding essentials. The day bag is just enough for a bottle of water, a snack, my notebook, and a few small purchases. Small backpacks are available for this use. Once these essentials are packed, I pack clothing. For me, a two-week trip means no more than two pair of shoes (plus those slippers). I take no more than two skirts and two pair of slacks, a scarf, one nightgown or PJ set, six tops, and one dress. Underwear is the other essential— one per day, plus socks. Don’t overdo, and bon voyage!

Above:: Keep track of chargers and small electronics in a zippered pouch. Left:: A day bag or small backpack is handy for essentials on short day trips out of the hotel.

Below: At the end of a long day of travel, your feet will thank you for remembering a cozy pair of slippers.

By Gloria Whimmer (Long standing BSRI Meals on Wheels Volunteer)

Volunteer to share a smile and a meal with a homebound senior in our area. It only takes 2 hours once a week to deliver meals through our Meals on Wheels program. Anyone with a license, car, and a desire to help others can do this volunteer role!

Volunteering to deliver meals for the Meals on Wheels program has been far more rewarding than I ever imagined. Those who started as clients have now become friends over the years. The people I deliver to are some of the most interesting folks you will ever meet and I find myself looking forward to my weekly visit with enthusiasm. I have the privilege to laugh, smile, and tear up at times during special moments with clients. I am constantly entertained. They like to offer up jokes, brief stories, or a favorite memory from their childhood, working life, or family times. I have met folks who escaped from wars in Europe, a former member of the PGA tour, a tugboat captain, a grandmother, a nurse, a pastor, a farmer, a mechanic, a chef, a veteran, and so many more interesting life stories I have had the privilege to be a part of. All because of the Meals on Wheels program. These folks are all home-bound and truly in need of this service. Many do not have family in the area or anyone able to assist them during the week. You may be the only person they see all day. Volunteering for this program has been a real blessing to me and I hope to continue for many more years. If you need a smile, just deliver a meal. The clients are grateful, not just for the meal, but for the gift of your time.

une is the start of the summer and the peak month to grill. Grilling season is a great time to have family cookouts and barbecues. Follow these safe grilling tips this summer to prevent cross contamination and fires:

Be sure all food waste is scraped off the grill.

By mixing equal amounts of water and liquid detergent, spray the solution where the gas tank and grill connects. Slowly turn the gas tank on. If bubbles appear, there is a possible gas leak.

Roll up any long sleeves, tuck loose clothing in, and pull back hair if necessary.

Make sure all food is prepped prior to grilling.

In the Garden

By Pat Naughton Summer is a good time for fertilizing warm-season grasses common in Brunswick County. A soil sample is recommended to determine your fertilizer needs. The first step is to obtain a soil sample box and form.

Obtain samples throughout the lawn by cutting the grass with a shovel and pulling the sod back. Take a few inches of soil below the sod. Mix the soil and fill the sample box to the required level. Samples can be drop off dropped at N.C. Cooperative Extension, 25 Referendum Drive in Bolivia for no charge this time of year. If you picked up a soil sample box at a store, ask about any charges for shipping. Results are typically available in a few weeks.

Fertilizer recommendations are given in pounds of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft. Pace off the boundary lines to determine the total square feet of lawn. An average step is about 3 feet. To apply 1 lb. of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft., divide 100 by the first number of the fertilizer type. For example, if using 5-5-15, this would be 20 lbs. of fertilizer per 1000 sq. ft. For a recommendation of

½ lb of nitrogen, divide 50 by the first number.

Here are a few general recommendations for specific types of grasses common in Brunswick County when a soil sample indicates adequate or excess phosphorus in the soil: 

Centipede – This lowmaintenance grass needs one application of fertilizer a year. Fertilize at a rate of ½ lb. of N/1000 sq. ft. Use an 8-0-24 fertilizer.

Zoysia – Fertilize at a rate of ½ lb. of N/1000 sq. ft. each month from May to August. Use 5-0-15 fertilizer.

St. Augustine – Fertilize with 50-15 at a rate of ½ lb. of N/1000 sq. ft. in June and 1 lb. of N/1000 in July. Apply 8-0-24 at a rate of ½ lb. of N/1000 sq. ft. in August.

Bermuda – Fertilize with 5-0-15 at a rate of 1 lb. N/1000 sq. ft. during the months of May through August.

If a soil sample has not been obtained, then use a balanced fertilizer. A balanced fertilizer has all the same numbers, like 10-10-10.

For more information about lawn fertilization, visit http://ces.ncsu.edu. You can post your questions via the ‘Ask an Expert’ link, www.turffiles.ncsu.edu, or contact the Brunswick County Extension office, (910) 253-2610.

each reads by local authors, stories in North Carolina settings, and fast-paced thrillers make our June reading list fun. Find all of these titles at Brunswick County libraries. Dorothea Benton Frank’s By Invitation Only (2018) is recipe for down-home Carolina charm. Ingredients: romance, peaches, culture clash of big city vs. small farm, and generous sprinkles of low-country colloquialisms and quirkiness. Preparation: combine highfallutin’ Chicagoans and hardscrabble farmers, chill in a well-situated lawn chair for an afternoon. Serve this fluffy chick-lit with sweet tea. TAKEAWAY: Despite a rushed finale and light social commentary/contrast between the well-to-do and those striving to do well, readers can bask in a nice escape. The twisted mind of a psychopath and survivors’ lives as they struggle with the impact and lasting effect of a horrific event are the basis for Shelter in Place by Nora Roberts

(2018). The plot, which unfortunately parallels current events, is lightened by Ms. Roberts’ customary romantic element. Characters’ lives, heroes and victims, are skillfully intertwined and some brief, comedic elements create an engaging novel that only rarely feels forced. TAKEAWAY: An intense topic folded into a very readable book. Where the Crawdads Sing is Delia Owens’ 2018 debut effort. The protagonist, Kya Clark, is an abandoned child who somehow raises herself in near-isolation from the modern world to become a renowned nature author/ artist. Too many themes created an overlong, disjointed novel: a coming-of-age storyline, courtroom/jail crime drama, romantic tale, a cursory attempt to address racism, corny poetry, and dizzying flashbacks and

forwards.… Oh, my, this reader’s patience and suspension of disbelief were strained too far. Had the author disciplined herself, the novel would shine, but her inability to settle on a cohesive narrative was disconcerting. TAKEAWAY: Wellwritten nature descriptions of our beautiful North Carolina marshes redeem this book. Local Friends of the Library groups support our libraries and communities! The primary fundraising comes from selling used books at $1 or less, which give penny-wise seniors opportunities to save money and enjoy like-new books. Take advantage of continuous in-thelibrary book sales at branches in Shallotte, Ocean Isle, and Leland, or drop into Southport Realty at 727 N. Howe Street in Southport to visit the Friends’ permanent bookstore. Choose from a vast variety of books and find some bargains on Saturday June 29, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The June is Bustin' Out All Over theme offers special half-off select items.

Memory Loss Support Group Beginning this month, the Brunswick Center at Calabash will begin holding this support group the 1st Tuesday of each month. This group is meant to serve those who are suffering from memory loss or are caring for a loved one with memory loss.

A FAMILIAR FACE IN CALABASH By Barbara L. Weber Jan Smart moved to Calabash in 2018 from Sun City, Arizona to live with her eldest son and wife after husband, “Bob” Robert Sr. Master Sgt. E9, retired Air Force, died. The military couple resided 3 years in Rapid City, South Dakota, back and forth to California, and Okinawa. She says, “In all of my years travelling, The Brunswick at Calabash people are the nicest people I’ve met. Directors Courtney Bledsoe and Holley Norris are awesome.” Every day Jan enjoys playing Mah Jongg or cards, Geri-Fit, and making new friends at the Center. The Smarts reared 3 children, 2 boys and a girl; 9 grandchildren, and 4 greats. Her youngest son was born in Okinawa where the family lived for 5 years. Jan appreciated a maid and child care then. Bob’s duty took him away often, including 2 tours in Vietnam. Jan worked as a Personal Clerk for the Army and Air Force Exchange for 24 years to fill her lonely hours. Well trained, she says, “Whenever we moved it was easy for me to fit in the new base.” Jan and Bob were married for 64 years. She tells me with a smile, “I went bowling with my girlfriend. She wanted me to meet her new boyfriend, Bob. A week later Bob asked me out. Soon, Mom signed permission for Bob, 19 years old, to marry me.”

Did You Know?

June 19th is Juneteenth! Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration honoring the end of slavery in the U.S. While the Emancipation Proclamation was penned on Jan. 1, 1863, some 250,000 slaves in Texas remained unaware until 2 1/2 years later when Union General Gordon Granger led federal troops to Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1985 to announce the Civil War had ended, and slaves had been freed. Celebrations often include parades, rodeos, soul food, and reciting the Emancipation Proclamation. Happy Juneteenth!

Senior Spotlight

“Stay in school, go to college, and respect your grandparents! Meet Dora & Itch Hoshiyama! Itch, born in a Japanese Internment Camp in 1942, grew up in California to become an Electronic Engineer. In time, Itch became the Department Manager of the company he was working for. On a June business trip to Salt Lake City, Utah, he met an Aerospace Program Coordinator who caught his eye named Dora. The two felt an instant connection and began to fly back and forth visiting each other regularly. Dora ended up moving out to California and they wed that following June. Now they have been married for 29 years! Together, Dora and Itch have raised both of their grandsons whom they love and are extremely proud of. Over the years, they reflected back on taking Tae kwon do, becoming blackbelts, and taking their grandkids to the Disneyland Millennium Celebration!.Prior to moving to Leland and living in California, the couple lived in Leesburg, Virginia and owned a Milwaukee Frozen Custard Franchise. They loved getting to know all of their staff very closely, becoming more like a family ,as they said we are here at the center. Dora and Itch are now moving back up to Va. in order to be closer to their grandsons and the rest of their family once again. We are so thankful for all they have done for us at the Brunswick at Leland and already miss them dearly! -Jade Robinson

JUNE IS

MEN’S HEALTH MONTH June is the month that we celebrate dads. What better time is there for men to get their health screenings scheduled? Even healthy men need to get health screenings for preventive care. If you are a man with Medicare coverage, now is the time to talk with your doctor about getting screened for prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease. Medicare covers prostate screenings once every 12 months for men over 50 and the colorectal screening tests every 120 months, unless at high risk. Cardiovascular screenings can detect conditions that could lead to heart attack or stroke and are covered by Medicare once every five years. Ask a SHIIP counselor for more information.

Two new offerings! Chair Yoga and Yoga for Healthy Bones and Improved Balance Please come join us for two new classes being offered on Friday mornings beginning June 14th. Chair yoga is for those people who don’t want to be down on the floor, so by using a chair in our practice, we can safely focus on increasing range of motion, improving posture and gaining stamina. In the Yoga for Healthy Bones and Improved Balance class, we will use centuries-old yoga poses to create strong and healthy bones and to improve our balance and surefootedness. The instructor of this class has moderate to severe osteoporosis, so the selected poses are designed for those who have osteoporosis, osteopenia, or similar bone issues. Kevin began practicing yoga in 1999. He received his Yoga Alliance RTY-200 hour registered yoga teacher certification in Wilmington in 2006.

Instructor Spotlight Wednesday Afternoon Bible Study– William Flythe Please come to the library on Wednesday afternoons at 12:15 for an uplifting and soul-satisfying Bible study, led by our very own William Flythe. This is a glorious and interactive group to join.

Fit and Strong– Jim Lightbourne Join us on Monday and Wednesday afternoons at 2:15pm for this delighful class that focuses on strength, stretching and balance. You will get a little of everything your body needs in this comprehensive exercise class.

Parkinson’s Support Group– Mike Haase Do you have Parkinson’s or know someone who does? Join us for this inspiring monthly group meeting where there are cutting edge speakers and thought-provoking discussions on how to manage this disease and live your best life. Mike Haase is our facilitator for this amazing group.
