A Set of Volunteers
Meals on Wheels Volunteers Michael and Margie Rhoden
By Joan Leotta
Waldorf, Maryland sent Brunswick County two of its finest in June 2019 when Michael and Margie Rhoden moved to Brunswick Forest. Both offered a lifetime of service, Michael as an Army officer (retired colonel) and volunteer at the National World War II Memorial, and Margie as a librarian in Charles County,Maryland and then a volunteer with that library system. This pair decided from early on that they wanted to do volunteer work in their new community.
On the Road with Meals
Michael Rhoden says, “A friend of ours who retired to southern Virginia told us how much he enjoyed delivering meals to homebound seniors.” They discovered Meals on Wheels, through the Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI), performs that service here in Brunswick County. They signed up and began working with the Brunswick Center at Leland in November 2020, just before Thanksgiving. “We go out every Wednesday to six clients. It only takes about an hour and a half. One of the stops is a couple, so we pick up seven meals from the Leland center at 9:30, and an hour and a half and thirty-five miles later, even counting chatting with our clients, we are done.”
Margie Rhoden adds, “We really enjoy seeing and talking with our clients. We think of them as special people in our lives.” The Rhodens regularly inquire how their clients are doing and briefly visit with them – masked, of course. In addition to the meals, the Rhodens pick up flyers on things like health (e.g., where to get COVID-19 shots)
