Happy Mother’s Day to the mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers who are reading this! We’d like to take you out to brunch to thank you for all you do, but since that can’t happen, we’re doing the next best thing: composing a Mother’s Day brunch for your family to prepare for you. We have tips for both the novice and the more adventurous cook, so check out our recipes on page 10. Are you a puzzle fan? The Buzz got requests for a crossword puzzle, so we’re trying it out this month. We threw in a sudoku for good measure. Please let us know how you like them! Keep us posted: Too hard? Too easy? You love (or hate) puzzles? Be a squeaky wheel and help choose your Buzz material. This month we went out to see the Gator Senior Games sponsored by Brunswick County Parks and Recreation. Parks and Rec has many programs for folks 55 and older, and lots of our senior participants at BSRI are competing in sports and arts. Events end May 15, so look for winners in these pages in future issues. Last year saw several state finalists from our area. Please support the Buzz by buying an ad. Our rates are low and we reach 10,000 Brunswick County residents each month. And every dollar you spend supports programs and services for Brunswick County seniors. Call (910) 754-2300. F
or 55 years, May has been celebrated as Older Americans Month. The theme for 2018 is “Engage at Every Age.”
Photo by Khrystye Haselden, 50+ Programs Coordinator, Brunswick County Parks and Recreation; Coordinator, Brunswick County Gator Senior Games and SilverArts
Caroline Mandly (left) and Louise Ackerman braved the chill and rain April 10 to run in the Brunswick County Gator Senior Games 10K road race. These sports and arts competitions draw participants from around the county, and winners may go on to compete at a state level. Find out more at https://bcparks.recdesk.com and on pages 12-13 of this month’s Buzz.
As I reflected on this, I did a little research on the origins of the word „engage.‟ While there are many modern uses for the verb, they arose from the French verb engagier, “to pledge.” I like to think of the theme within this original context, where to “engage at every age” is to make a pledge to well-being at every stage of life. It is a commitment of accountability and self-love for both yourself and your community. Remaining socially engaged can improve the quality of life for older adults. Across the country, older Americans—a rapidly growing population— are taking part in activities that promote wellness and social connection. They are sharing their wisdom and experience with future generations, and they are giving back to enrich their communities. They‟re working and volunteering, mentoring and learning, leading and engaging. We at BSRI are happy to be partners in this pledge. We strive to offer seniors the space and opportunity to engage in activities that might have been lifelong avenues of enrichment,
Veronica Lett-McGee, Director The Brunswick Center at Leland
or to embark on a new adventure never before attempted. The most common way participants engage at the Brunswick Center at Leland is through our fitness and arts programming. We are fortunate to have excellent instructors that offer everything from line dancing, aerobics and yoga, to wreath-making and oil painting. Another way that our seniors engage is through volunteering. Our front desk, advisory committee, special events, and center beautification projects would be impossible to manage without the dedication of volunteers. Our seniors are motivated not just for their own enrichment, but also to address the needs of our community. ENGAGE, continued on page 6
ENGAGE, continued from page 5
Take for instance, our Sleep Mats program. We have had an overwhelming amount of support for this initiative led by Linda Wadhams and Debbie Borgin, which transforms plastic grocery bags into cushioning moisture barriers for our homeless neighbors. Each bag uses 700 to 1000 bags and each one must be flattened, cut into strips, looped into chains and then crocheted into mats. We have been overjoyed with the participant involvement with this. Folks of all ages and abilities have shown such a commitment to this community service project.
Above: Making a sleep mat for a homeless neighbor. Above right: A Leland senior stays engaged at a center art class.
“Engage at Every Age emphasizes the importance of being active and involved, no matter where or when you are in life. You are never too old (or too young) to participate in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
We encourage you to take the pledge, and engage by taking a class, volunteering, or just having lunch with us, today!

Courtney Bledsoe joins the BSRI team as assistant director at the Brunswick Center at Leland. Bledsoe previously worked for 10 years as a restaurant manager and event coordinator in Indiana. She continued her employment as an event coordinator after moving to the Wilmington area in 2013, but also wanted a way to connect to her new community in her free time. She became a yoga teacher in 2016 and started teaching in local studios, where she found she most enjoyed teaching therapeutic yoga to seniors. After learning about BSRI, Bledsoe knew this was the perfect opportunity to combine her passion for serving the senior community while exercising her event planning skills. She looks forward to contributing to the Leland Center family by connecting through kindness and compassion. Courtney spends her free time with her husband, B.J., and two hound dogs, Jake and Zeke. Her favorite activities include practicing yoga, going for long runs, spending time at the beach, listening to live music, and cooking yummy vegetarian dishes.
It’s important to let your elected representatives know your thoughts, but it’s a lot of work, too. If you’re looking for an easier way to communicate with your federal and state elected officials, Audie Lowrimore and the Senior Tar Heel Legislature (STHL) are here to help. With representatives from every NC county, STHL advocates for issues of importance to seniors. And the group is making it easier for you to put in your two cents, using the STHL Comment Card. Pick up a Comment Card at any Brunswick County senior center, fill it out, and return it to the center. Audi Lowrimore, Brunswick County’s STHL delegate, will pick up Comment Cards and deliver them to the representatives you choose. It’s that simple!

Mother’s Day Brunch By Joan Leotta
S
ince Mom is the daily cook in many homes, making a meal for Mom or taking her out to eat on Mother’s Day has become a tradition. I always leaned to staying in—whether cooking for my own mom or having my family spoil me. Restaurants can be crowded on Mother’s Day. If you make the choice to cook for your mom, the meal can look elaborate without being a lot of work: Just keep in mind that it should look good, taste good, and provide a healthy balance of edibles on the plate. If mom has a favorite that you can make, work on that. If she is open to whatever you cook, then let me make a few suggestions.
If you have no skills at all, purchase a quiche ready-made at the grocery store, cut up some fresh strawberries (local are best), and roast some asparagus. Follow the instructions on the quiche package and serve a wedge of
quiche with the lovely green asparagus on the side. Put the sliced berries in a separate bowl with a teaspoon of orange juice and top with whipped cream. Serve all of this on the best china you have. Put flowers on the table. Put all your electronic devices away during the meal. If you want more sweets, buy some of her favorite chocolates or cookies to finish the meal.
If you feel more adventuresome, make a quiche. Or surprise your mom with a cheese soufflé as the main course, with that same roasted asparagus and bowl of strawberries on the side and chocolates or cookies. Soufflés are easy to make: a cheese sauce folded into beaten egg whites and then baked. Yep, that is all there is to it! The trick is getting the ratio of egg whites to egg yolks correct—two more whites than yolks is the general rule of thumb. My husband gave me a booklet on
making soufflés early in our marriage and it has proved a source of much delight for our entire family, providing a soufflé recipe to celebrate my own dear mom when she came to visit on Mother’s Day. I’ve passed this recipe on to my daughter, so she can now make it for me!
If you do not have a soufflé dish, do not despair. A casserole dish will suffice as long as it can take the high heat. Do not skip the step of putting a wax paper “collar” around the dish before you pour in the mix and pop it into the oven. The collar keeps the soufflé from falling over in the oven. I use masking tape to secure mine in a circle around the outside of the dish. Remember, the soufflé should be done last. Make the roasted asparagus first, take them out of the oven and cover to keep warm while the soufflé is cooking (or the quiche). Do not try to bake both the asparagus and the main course at the same time.

he Brunswick County Master Gardeners will have a Native Plant Sale May 18 and 19 at the government center in Bolivia. Seminars begin at 8:30 a.m. both days, said Vicki Fuhrmann, Plant Sale Chair. Attendees will learn about the benefits of native plants, such as providing food and shelter for birds and pollinators. The seminars are about two hours long. The Native Plant Sale begins at 11 a.m. Here visitors will find a mixture of shrubs, perennials, and a few trees. The plants come from three North Carolina nurseries. “We focus on plants that are beneficial to habitat and wildlife,” Fuhrmann said. “These plants will be bird- and pollinator-friendly.” Extension Master Gardener Volunteers provides gardeners with research-based information on gardens, lawns and landscapes. To learn more, go to http://bcmgva.org or http://bcmastergardenerva.org.

ooks that feature North Carolina and North Carolina authors, from a scary novel set in the backcountry, to delicious Tar Heel stories, to the memoir of a CIA spy’s brat who traveled the world and retired on Oak Island, give readers some wonderful books for springtime reading. The Last Child by John Hart is by turns chilling and heartwarming. I reread this 2008 book in anticipation of its sequel in 2017. Long after his twin sister Alyssa goes missing, her brother Johnny believes her alive. The hill country and psychological landscapes pulled me into that sensation of feeling powerless against forces larger than life. Despite knowing how the story ended, the book offered a startling and satisfying conclusion—I cannot wait to read the next installment. Nutshell review: “Things aren’t right” on so many levels in this tragic, terrifying book. Marianne Gingher edited Amazing Place: What North Carolina Means to Writers to demonstrate “the importance of place” in an author’s work. She created a wonderful book to enjoy a little at a time or all at once. The contributors, native born or transplanted Tar Heels, offer downhome stories that wander like trails through the mountain forests or along the sandy beaches that inspired
them. This is a charming read for newcomers as well as old timers; Ms. Gingher’s selections are a “Who’s Who” of recommended authors who provide personal glimpses into how North Carolina influenced their craft. Nutshell review: You can almost hear the drawls and smell the magnolias while reading this book. Carol Cini’s The Spy and His CIA Brat shares a story exposed through letters, CIA documents, and historical sources as the author personally experienced post-World War II Europe and the Vietnam War. Living through bombings, tank invasions, and mysterious ghosts while traveling the globe at his father’s various stations, Cini found himself at famous touchpoints in history during childhood and then served his country for over three decades in an unnamed agency. Like father, like son? Nutshell review: A son decodes his father’s mysterious life as a secret agent.

ay is osteoporosis month! Let’s focus on how to keep our bones healthy and strong.
What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is common disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle. It makes it easy to break a bone. What are the signs and symptoms? Once your bones are weakened, you may have signs and symptoms that include:
Back pain
A loss of height
A stooped posture
For some people, the first sign may be a broken bone, usually in the spine or hip
What are the risk factors?
Family history: Osteoporosis usually runs in families. If anyone in your family had a hip or spine fracture, you’re more likely to get it as well.
Gender: Women are four times more likely than men to get osteoporosis.
Age: Though anyone can have osteoporosis, petite women older than 50 are more likely to get it.
Smoking: Studies show that cigarette smokers are

people do not know they are infected, since many people can live with hepatitis C for decades without symptoms or feeling sick. A simple blood test is the only way to know if you have the virus. It is recommended that all individuals in this age bracket be tested for hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is now curable with
new medicines, so it is critical to get tested and seek treatment. Most treatment consists of daily oral antiviral medications for several months. After treatment, patients are tested to identify whether they are cured. Several local providers now offer the hepatitis C treatment. Patient HEPATITIS C, continued on page 18
By Dorrie Brennan Do you get frustrated when trying to clean your stainless steel appliances? Have you spent too many hours and too much money trying different products? When the sun shines on the appliance, do you get horrified to see those watermarks and grime that have never gone away after cleaning? Don’t let panic set in. You can go to the website of the manufacturer of the appliance to understand what they recommend for removing watermarks and stains. You can also reference the owner’s manual that comes with the appliance. Some solutions, however, are very costly. Search the internet for home remedy solutions. Go to https:// learn.compactappliance.com/clean-stainless-steelappliances/ which has several home remedy solutions.

assistance programs through pharmaceutical companies provide free or low-cost medications to those who don’t qualify for other insurance or assistance. Due to the opioid crisis, the rate of acute hepatitis C in Brunswick County has doubled over the past few years. Sharing needles and other injection equipment places an individual at an increased risk for transmission. Locally, Coastal Horizons offers a syringe exchange
One that combines low cost and ease of cleaning is cleaning with white vinegar and oil. Yes! It’s that simple. First, spray or dampen a soft cloth with vinegar. Wipe in the direction of the grain working your way from the top to the bottom. Repeat this process until the appliance is free of stains and watermarks. Then get a clean cloth and dab the cloth with olive oil. Again, wipe in the direction of the grain. The olive oil gives the appliance the same luster that it had when you first bought it. Bob Vila provides information on his website on the type of cloths not to use. He also discusses home remedies to try if the appliance is heavy with grime. RALEIGH—North Carolina Department of Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey warns Medicare recipients to be on alert for scams. Beginning in April 2018 and running through April 2019, old Medicare cards will be replaced with ones that no longer show Social Security numbers. Instead, cards will have a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) that will be used for billing and to check eligibility and claim status. “This will happen automatically,” Causey said. “Recipients won’t have to pay anyone or provide additional information to anyone who may threaten to remove Medicare benefits unless they comply.” Having Social Security numbers removed from Medicare cards helps fight medical identity theft and protect medical and financial information. Recently, however, the department has learned of Medicare recipients who received phone calls from people asking for personal information. Listed below are ways people may try to scam you:
Is someone calling, claiming to be from Medicare, and asking for your Social Security number or bank information? Hang up. That’s a scam. First, Medicare won’t call you. Second, Medicare will never ask for your Social Security number or bank information.
Is someone asking you to pay for your new card? That’s a scam. Your new Medicare card is free.
Is someone threatening to cancel your benefits if you don’t give up information or money? This is a scam. New Medicare cards will be mailed to you automatically. There won’t be any changes to your benefits.
Family members may get their cards in different months. For more information on Medicare fraud, contact the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) at (855) 408-1212 or your local SHIIP Coordinating Site at (910)754-2300, ext. 1056. —Rene Tarquinio BSRI Case Manager/SHIIP Coordinator
