Contributors Our November cover photographer Kermit Cox and his wife Suzanne lived in Westfield, Ind. before moving to Southport. Kermit attended the John Herron Art Institute and won numerous photography awards in Indiana. He now pursues fine art photography and leads a photography class at the Brunswick Center at Southport. You can see his work at the Art Shak in Southport and in the Senior Center Gift Shop on Oak Island. Betsy Duarte moved to Ocean Isle Beach from California to be closer to her son and grandkids, and for the serenity of the beach. A retired ortho trauma nurse, Betsy volunteers at Hope Harbor Home and is on the board of Brunswick County Homeless Coalition, is secretary for Alliance of Brunswick County Property Owners Association, and is a member of Sea Notes Choral Society. Betsy writes about homelessness on page 9. Donna Ruth Morgan volunteers with Friends of the Library in Southport and Oak Island, Boiling Spring Lakes Library Commission, Brunswick County Library Board of Trustees, and the N.C. Friends of the Public Library. She inherited a love of reading and shares that same enjoyment with her four children and three grandchildren. Donna reviews new thrillers on page 14. Pat Naughton and his family moved from Richmond, Va. to Winding River Plantation in Brunswick County in 2017 after Pat retired as a mechanical engineer at a nuclear power plant. He has been an avid gardener for 35 years and is a Brunswick County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer. Pat visits the Brunswick County Edible Garden on page 15. Jennifer Sherman is BSRI director of case management and in January will celebrate 15 years of employment at BSRI. She works part-time as an adjunct professor at Miller-Motte College and is ministry leader for a Celebrate Recovery program helping people overcome life’s hurts, habits, and hang-ups. Jennifer is a Brunswick County native and resides in Shallotte with her husband, Tommy, and their dog, Mersea. She writes about National Family Caregivers Month on page 10. Holly Tate is a beach-loving North Carolina transplant who grew up on Long Island and never wants to be too far from the ocean. A self-proclaimed “grammar geek,” Holly recently retired from a career in marketing communications. She loves books, travel, and exploring our beautiful state. Holly takes a closer look at a local artist on page 12.

t’s the time of year to remember what we’re grateful for. At press time, I am filled with gratitude for cooler weather. After our scorching summer, the fall temperatures are so welcome, and I write this with windows open and a sweater on. The Buzz has a lot of room for gratitude. Our faithful columnists and feature writers, some of whom are shown at left, are so talented and reliable—and they do this work as volunteers. Thank you, Buzz writers! The Brunswick County community often tells us about news and events that our readers want to discover. They may offer stories, such as Betsy Duarte’s page 9 invitation to the Homeless Banquet. And they may offer photos, such as Kermit Cox’s cover photo about an aviation event coming up this month in Oak Island. I have to say how thankful I am for the Coastal Carolina Camera Club. This group provides so many beautiful covers for the Buzz, often on very short notice and according to the editor’s daily whims. What an amazing group! And a score of BSRI staff members takes time each month to send in calendars, menus, stories, and news items. This publication depends on dozens of people providing terrific work on quick deadlines. It’s beyond the call of duty. Thank you. Shelagh Clancy Editor, Brunswick Senior Buzz Buzz@bsrinc.org

An Opportunity for Gratitude
C
ooler weather is upon us as well as the beginning of the holiday season. Thanksgiving is a time for appreciating all the gifts life has offered, especially family and friends. However, finding joy in the holiday can be challenging for some senior citizens. Photo by Kermit Cox
Kermit Cox captured this photo of the Ford Tri-motor aircraft during its 2016 visit to our area. It’s the property of the national EAA and visits EAA chapters throughout the year. Local chapter No. 939 is sponsoring this month’s visit (see page 7) and helping to finance maintenance of the wing. Kermit and his wife Suzanne joined the EAA after the 2014 B-17G Superfortress visit in 2014.
We can honor our senior family members and friends by practicing traditions that have been passed down through the generations. Prepare a traditional family holiday recipe, bring out the old pictures, and share stories from days gone by. Going around the dinner table and asking each person what they are grateful for is a beloved tradition no matter what the age. Families are thankful for health, for spouses and children, for a new baby celebrating their first Thanksgiving, for a country with freedoms, and for another year with an aging family member. The gift of our elderly is precious. They are a legacy of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. They represent the fullness of life that we all hope to attain as we continue to advance in years. Some have endured trials in ways that we may never
understand but have also celebrated life with a love that may be beyond our grasp. Aging eventually takes a toll on our bodies but for many, aging has only unleashed their spirit. We need to tap into this spirit and let it spill into our lives. This Thanksgiving, we should all spend some time with the older adults in our lives and allow them to share themselves with us. Listen to their stories, and not only will you help them find joy in the holiday, but you may find joy and gratitude as well. There is something powerful about group gratitude. We learn a little more about the people we are celebrating with, but it also has the power to shift the dynamic of the room. Everyone stops and listens and everyone shares in the gratitude of the other. I am grateful for having the privilege of sharing with all who I have come in contact with over the past several years here at the senior center. I wish you all a happy and blessed Thanksgiving.

Lucero had a master’s degree in social work and served seniors, children, families, and those with developmental disabilities for almost 20 years. She grew up in poverty in the coal camps of West Virginia and spent considerable time with her grandmother, listening to stories and learning family traditions that led to her love of working with seniors and helping others. “I enjoy working with seniors because they have such a rich and wonderful history,” Lucero said. “Many of them were out living and doing things that I read about in school. I love it when they are willing to share their stories with me.” Lucero previously worked as a social services director at a senior center in W. Va. She was grateful to BSRI staff and participants who made her feel welcome. Lucero leaves behind two children and her parents. BSRI staff and participants will miss her dearly.

he local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) is hosting a 4 ½ day visit of one of the most iconic airplanes in aviation history, a 1929 Ford Tri-Motor airliner. This aircraft, known as the “Tin Goose,” pioneered airline travel as we know it today. Number 146 of 199 built, and one of only eight still flying, this fully restored airplane tours the country so folks can take a short flight back in time to experience what flight was like at the dawn of commercial aviation, says EAA Chapter President Rich Largent. The aircraft will be conducting short flights at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport, Oak Island, Nov. 7 through 11. Tickets are $72 online, $77 walkup, and $52 for children 17 and younger. For more information, go to FlyTheFord.org or call (877) 952-5395. Classic cars will be on display each day. The EAA is also hosting a pancake breakfast Nov. 9. On Nov. 11, a pancake breakfast sponsored by Duke Energy is free to veterans. For information about these special events, call (301) 801-3725.
Tickets help the EAA chapter, which funds youth initiatives and supports local civic organizations such as Matthew’s Ministry and other organizations, Largent says.

or the first time ever, Brunswick County will be a part of the nationwide Tellabration Celebration of Storytelling. On Nov. 6, The Sound House will host an open mic for stories—your stories. The atmosphere is casual and both adults and children will be welcome to tell and listen to stories. Choose tales from folklore or something you want to share from your own experience. Funny, scary, poignant, outrageous— all are welcome (as long as they are family-friendly). Each person will have about ten minutes on stage to either tell or perform the story without a script or to read their story from their own writing.
I’ve been a professional story performer for more than 30 years. Here are some tips:
As always, thanks for your patronage and support!
Use an opening that either dynamites the audience into the story or slowly sets the scene.
Be sure to have no more than three points of action.
End the tale with a flourish or a simple gesture and farewell.
A ten-minute story may have just two or even only one point of action.
If you think you have great stories but are unsure about telling them to an audience, think of the people sitting at tables in The Sound House as your friends. Email joanleotta@atmc.net to let us know you are coming, or, just show up! The Tellabration Celebration of Storytelling is from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 6, 201 at The Sound House, 3610 Express Dr., Shallotte. No charge, everyone is welcome to tell a ten-minute, family-friendly tale.

here is a common misconception that people become homeless as a result of mismanaging money, making poor decisions, or through drug or alcohol abuse. While some of these factors can contribute to homelessness, none of them are the sole cause of it. The Brunswick County Homeless Coalition (BCHC), a private nonprofit, and its staff of volunteers that assists people in Brunswick County has observed that people may be just one event away from becoming homeless. Many of these events are beyond one’s control. Natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods, or more mundane things such as unexpected illness or injury or losing a job, can take us from safe and secure to hungry and homeless.
For Jose Ruiz, for example, it was when he and his pregnant wife, Suzie, discovered black mold in their rented double-wide mobile home in the spring of 2019. This was the event that caused them and their five-year-old son and unborn child to become homeless. Their landlord wasn’t able to eradicate the mold, and they couldn’t stay in the house as it was, so they called the Brunswick County Homeless Coalition’s 888 number (888-5195362) and filled out an intake form over the phone with a volunteer. They were placed in a motel for several days until they could secure other housing. For Veronica and her two preschool children, the event was a tornado that preceded Hurricane

Dorian. It took the roof right off their rented mobile home and the rain that followed destroyed the home’s contents. The family was forced to relocate. But where would they go? Veronica called the Brunswick County Homeless Coalition’s 888 line and a volunteer arranged for short-term emergency shelter while she considered her options. A third request was from a family of five, a single mom and her four children, whose air conditioner unit had quit working so their single-wide trailer was unbearably hot. The Brunswick County Homeless Coalition discussed it at their monthly meeting, took up a collection, and Paul Witmer, BCHC’s veteran advocate, and Joe Staton, president, purchased a unit and Joe personally installed it with the help of a neighbor. Many calls that come in are requests for help with rent or power bills which allows tenants to stay in their existing homes. “The coalition’s goal is to keep people in safe, stable, permanent housing where possible, or to help them find it if necessary,” Staton says.
Stephanie Bowen, executive director of Brunswick Family Assistance, says that with a budget of $70,000 and a huge volunteer effort, she was able to distribute water, food, and clothing to those in need in a county hard hit by Hurricane Florence. “I could never have accomplished this mammoth task without the tireless efforts of hundreds of volunteers throughout the county,” Bowen says.
Bowen will be the keynote speaker at the 8th Annual Hunger & Homeless Banquet and Soup Luncheon at the Brunswick Center at Calabash on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are free, available by registering online or at the door. All donations help BCHC provide services to Brunswick County’s homeless. The Rotary Club of Shallotte is sponsoring the event. Family Caregivers Month
By Jennifer Sherman Director of Case Management
N
ovember Is National Family Caregivers Month. About 34.2 million Americans provided unpaid care to an adult age 50 or older last year. Families are truly the backbone of the long-term care system. I became a caregiver in 2004 at the young age of 28, which led me back to my hometown and my job here at BSRI. My dad was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer, acute myeloid leukemia, and dementia. As the diseases progressed, he forgot how to administer his medications, our birthdays, and how to perform activities of daily living. I will never forget watching him for the first time look at his toothbrush so confused and glance at me with the prettiest blue eyes for help. My heart broke as his health declined while I was balancing a full-time job, coordinating his care, and making his last days memorable. Family caregivers provide an assortment of duties. They become the housekeeper, chef, Uber driver, nursing assistant, medication technician, and “Dora the Explorer.” Has anyone else spent hours searching for lost hearing aids, only to find them in the cereal box? Caregivers act as liaison with insurance companies, healthcare providers, financial institutes, legal advisors, and friends. They often find they have less time for self-care and other family members. They spend so much time on caregiving duties that they end up sacrificing the things they enjoy most.
Jennifer Sherman, left, and sister Donna Long show some love for their dad Jerry Prince. Because she took care of her dad who suffered from multiple illnesses, Sherman knows firsthand what it’s like to be a family caregiver.
Many caregivers feel ashamed to ask for help. They feel that asking for assistance may be seen as a sign of weakness. Please know you are not alone. We must celebrate one another and offer support on the toughest days. BSRI offers Caregiver Support Groups across the county and a Family Caregiver Support Program that provides much-needed respite. Stay connected with us on Facebook and check out our website, www.bsrinc.org, as we share our newest resources, the Caregiver Resource Guide, and the BSRI Resource Guide. To all caregivers, thank you. We appreciate you. Happy National Family Caregivers Month!

Volunteers Don and Debbie Massa share
A Volunteer’s Point of View By Don Massa It has been said that people are called to one of three geographic areas: the mountains, the desert or the ocean. After living in the Denver, Colorado area for 37 years, Debbie (a native North Carolinian) and I (who discovered my love for North Carolina – and Debbie, my love in North Carolina - while stationed in Elizabeth City) retired, heeded our call to the ocean and moved to the Southport area. After a year or so waking up and pinching ourselves to see if we were dreaming or if we really were so blessed to live in this beautiful, friendly area, we knew we wanted and needed to contribute time and resources to others who could use a helping hand. One of our good friends told us about Meals On Wheels and her experiences delivering meals. It struck a chord. We called the Brunswick Senior Resources Inc., spoke to Sarah, and within a short time we were delivering around 15 meals to homebound seniors on Thursday mornings. We have now been delivering on Thursday mornings for almost two years and it has been a truly rewarding and enjoyable experience. For some of the folks we have delivered to, the meal we delivered was their only meal of the day. Even in the midst of some challenging circumstances our clients remain some of the sweetest, most delightful and interesting people we know. There is one couple we deliver to that comes to mind. They are always upbeat, friendly and outgoing when we arrive and always express their appreciation for their meals. Contact Sarah Powell at spowell@bsrinc.org to find out how you can share your story. Your stories are what build this community and encourage others to be agents of change! If you or someone you know wants to begin volunteering with us, you can fill out an application at: http://www.bsrinc.org

Even though one of them lives with MS (Multiple Sclerosis), she is always sunny and cheerful. Their collie, Lassie, will occasionally stop barking long enough to give Debbie a friendly handshake before going back to barking harmlessly. Debbie and I are happy we have the opportunity to provide a little help to folks who can use it. All the people to whom we deliver are unfailingly pleasant to talk to and very appreciative of the meals they receive. We feel privileged to serve all of them.

Scenes of Shallotte she and her husband, Donald, returned to the U.S. from Korea in the late 1970s, their quarters at Ft. Bragg weren’t ready. Someone suggested they go to the beach for the weekend instead, and that’s where they fell in love with coastal Carolina. The Lauzons settled in Shallotte in 1978. Donald, who held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, died in 2005. Lauzon is a native of Menominee in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Kansas, and the Columbus School of Art in Columbus, Ga. She also studied for two years with the acclaimed portrait artist Jean Pilk in Washington, D.C. Along with teaching Lauzon the art of portrait painting, Pilk introduced her to art restoration. Today Lauzon offers original oil paintings, signed prints, giclée prints, fine art restoration services, and commissions. Her latest commission is an Impressionist-style painting. Rather than being sympathetic, Jules’ naivete and reactions are unbelievable and annoying. Nutshell review: A spooky setting and cast of enigmatic characters tantalize but do not deliver.
One Good Deed by David Baldacci features an engaging World War II veteran released on parole. Protagonist Aloysius Archer wants to prove himself but becomes caught up dealing with a cast of shady characters. A tightly-woven plot layered with gradually-revealed truths, small town shenanigans, and clever twists and turns will satisfy the most discriminating reader. Nutshell review: Engaging postwar historical details and superb writing yield a must-read suspense novel.
Your child is kidnapped and the “ransom” is snatching someone else’s child. The chilling premise behind The Chain follows the path from a terrifying abduction to the elaborate plan and psychopathy behind it. Adrian McKinty’s thriller examines how just how far a person’s moral code will stretch and to what lengths will a family will go to save one of their own. Nutshell review: Readers decide if this is a money-grabbing scheme or an elaborate game of wits.
Billed as a psychological thriller, Riley Sager’s Lock Every Door is a book in search of a genre. While piloting toward ghost story, suspense, and social commentary, it crashes and burns. A clueless millennial heroine lands a lucrative apartmentsitting job, but the rules for employment would send any rational person fleeing.
Nora Roberts’ Under Currents (2019) came highly recommended, but my suspension of disbelief brought me no pleasure. Despite dozens of best sellers, this time the author undersells with overlong descriptions, telegraphed action, and shallow characters. Even
hese 2019 thrillers make perfect reading on chilly November nights. All books are available at Brunswick County libraries.

In the Garden

here is a Thanksgiving bounty in the Edible Garden of the Brunswick County Botanical Gardens. This demonstration garden features colorful plants that taste just as great as they look. Many of the plants in the garden will be maturing in November. Experienced Master Gardener Volunteers Gail Pfeiffer, Craig Farland, and Gayle Capel are the leads for gardens. They have a team of Master Gardener Volunteers working to maintain the garden. Typically, volunteers work in the garden Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. This is a good time to visit and ask questions.
The volunteers enjoy working in the garden and sharing their experience of the challenges of gardening in Brunswick County. The favorite vegetable for most of the team is tomato. One of the favorites is Sun Gold Tomato. Mike Tullai, known as “The Tomato Guy of Ohio,” has found the best way to grow tomatoes here in Brunswick County is in a pot. Mike favors the Garden Gem tomato developed by the University of Florida. These seeds are not yet available for sale. You can get 15 seeds by making a $10 donation: Just Google University or Florida Garden Gem. Brunswick County generally has mild winters, which allows
gardening all year long. The selection of plants in the Edible Garden changes throughout the growing season. There is more than just the usual kale and collards in this fall‟s crop. In addition to lettuce, carrots, beets, broccoli, rutabaga, endive, and spinach, there are two varieties of kale, Blue Knight and Scarlet. Gail Capel is the main propagator for the garden. “I really like fall gardening. It‟s a great time for mustard greens,” Gail said. Gail selected four mustard greens to try out: Japanese Red Giant, Ruby Streaks, Dragon Tongue, and Green Wave Fall. Each of these add color to garden and a bit of spice to a salad. There are several fall plants that are great for oriental cooking:
Tatsoi, Mizuna Summer, and Mizuna Beni Houshi. Tatsoi is beneficial in the garden as a trap plant. Insects go for the trap plant instead of the other plants nearby. In 2017, this garden won first place in the North Carolina Extension Master Gardener Search for Excellence Award for the Southeast Region. It is amazing how many plants are grown in this small garden. Stop by the Edible Garden at 25 Referendum Drive and taste the beauty of fall gardening.

Healthy Bites

T
hanksgiving is not just about eating a great deal of delicious food. It is also a time to celebrate with friends and family as well as reflecting on being thankful. However, this holiday only comes once a year, so why not make it about eating anything and everything for the day? People usually gain at least a pound or two from Thanksgiving. Here are a couple of hacks to help keep your weight on track during the holidays. 1. Power Up with Breakfast Start your Thanksgiving morning with a high-fiber, high-protein snack to help keep you stay full. Protein helps you stay full with fewer calories and fiber can help maintain satiety. Great examples
of breakfast foods that contain high protein and fiber are:
Greek yogurt with fruit
Oatmeal
Egg white omelet with fresh veggies and herbs
2. Portion Control When making your Thanksgiving plate, keep in mind of the portion sizes. Fill you plate with small portions so you can actually enjoy each type of food you desire. 3. Stay Active If you decide to indulge on Thanksgiving, make sure you add in some type of exercise. Whether it’s cleaning around the house, dancing to your favorite song, or pacing back and forth to increase your steps, as long as you get you heart pumping you will burn some extra calories.

Meet Maria! “Whatever you do, do it with heart or don’t do it at all!” Maria Banchs was born in Cayey, Puerto Rico on September 15th, 1929. When Maria was just fourteen years old, she and her family migrated to New York. For twenty years, Maria lived in New York and worked in a factory sewing toys. Maria then went on to work at the local hospital as a clerk for twenty-five years, becoming a nurse along the way. From New York, Maria set out on an adventure with her daughter to find the perfect house for her grandson, Ralph, who was serving in the US Navy. They went house-hunting in Ohio and Tennessee, before settling in Leland in 2012. Maria is now residing in the very house she picked out for Ralph who is now a veteran in medical school and loves it! “I love to keep busy and am always fixing stuff up around the house.” When asked what her favorite memory is, Maria said Ralph’s graduation from high school. “It was such a nice day and he was so very happy, waving his diploma around.” She is thriving at 91, taking numerous exercise classes here at The Brunswick Center at Leland and constantly keeping everyone dancing, smiling and laughing. We are so fortunate to have you, Maria!
