It is without question my favorite time of year. What a joy it has been to see the deep blue skies fading into a light blue horizon against the backdrop of 80-degree daytime weather. Each weekend tends to be packed with community events, festivals, and all things that are special to the place we call home. BSRI enters its busiest time of year as well, with a series of events and activities aimed at making it a little easier to be 60 or older and enjoy a productive and meaningful retirement. We hope that you will participate in the many weekend events and stop by our booths, say hi, and give us feedback about how we can make things better for the community. The annual Seniors Helping Seniors and Their Caregivers event is set for Friday, Oct. 7 at the Brunswick Senior Center in Shallotte. The center is directly off U.S. 17 across from Smith Avenue at 3620 Express Drive. It’s on the same street as Days Inn and Summer Home Furniture. The building will be adorned with banners and the road will be marked with signs. This year will feature an expanded format with a mix of presenters, entertainers, vendors, and door prizes. We will be treated to opening ceremonies conducted by the Sheriff’s Office Flag Corps and the Coastal

Harmonizers, too. There is no charge for the Senior Helping Seniors Event, but due to its popularity, we ask that you make a reservation so we know how much food to prepare. Without a reservation, access may be limited. BSRI will assist with transportation from limited, specific locations. Please let us know if you think you may need transportation. For more information and to register, please call Debra Marlowe at (910) 754-2300, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

vacate its portion of the joint contract for food services from Trinity Corporation. With 90 days’ notification, BSRI is now preparing to take food preparation services in-house and begin cooking meals at senior centers. While there are still details to iron out, we expect to be preparing meals by Dec. 19. The November issue of the Buzz will detail this transition and what it will mean for our senior community. A special thanks to our staff, county management, and commissioners for helping us to arrive at this important juncture. Fall changeover for the new BSRI thrift store is underway and a new array of holiday items, warmer clothing, and furniture are available for this special time of year. The thrift store is at 10001 Beach Drive in Calabash. Proceeds are used to provide Meals on Wheels, in-home aide services, and senior center activities. If you are having a yard sale and have leftover items, please make a taxdeductible donation by calling the thrift store at (910) 579-7488 to schedule a pick-up. Read more about our thrift store on page 9. Open enrollment, or making adjustments to Medicare Health Insurance Plans, begins this month. The election period starts Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. This is a great time to review your insurance coverage—it’s the only time you can make changes. Our SHIIP program offers information to help you choose a Medicare program. This service is free to anyone with Medicare and is available in Shallotte and Southport. Please make a reservation so we may prepare

employee and volunteer schedules. To schedule an appointment, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Karen. Sawyer and Associates have created a floor plan for the new Calabash Area Senior Center. After the design phase, a bid process to select a contractor will be the next step. BSRI seeks community support from residents, businesses, and local nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that are non-budgeted items for the new center. We must raise $100,000; so far, $20,000 has been raised. If you would like to make a contribution or serve on the committee, please call (910) 7542300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. Windows have been installed in the new Brunswick Center at Leland along with ceiling tiles and fixtures. The project is on schedule for the December 2016 deadline. If the building is completed on time, we will do an official grand opening around the beginning of the New Year. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new Leland Center. The estimated total value of needed items and cash contributions is around $150,000. So far, $145,000 has been raised. Please help us get over the finish line. No donation is too small and all donations are tax deductible. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 7542300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. Enjoy the best time of year!

Your Devoted Servant, Jim

T

hanks to the generosity of Brunswick County, the BSRI Thrift Store in Calabash was able to donate excess inventory to help a newly formed charity and victims of the recent historic flooding in West Virginia. In July, the thrift store donated several truckloads of clothing and a variety of merchandise to Finding Their Wings, a new charity, to help them stock their new resale store) in Winnabow, which opened in early August.

Founded by Tangela Day, Finding their Wings helps foster youth, who age out of foster care at 18 and are left on their own with very limited resources. Finding Their Wings helps foster youth transition into adulthood and become independent, successful young adults by providing them with care packages, gift cards, apartment furnishings, and mentorship and help as a lifeline to those in the direst need. They group seeks volunteer help and donations of all kinds. Visit the Finding their Wings Resale Store at 6213 Ocean Hwy. (U.S.17 S) in Winnabow Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the group at www.findingtheirwings.org or on Facebook. Day can be reached at findingtheirwings@gmail.com.

Greg Adkins is a BSRI Thrift Store volunteer who is a part time resident here and also in West Virginia. The Red Cross, FEMA, state and local agencies are still on the scene providing relief. Many people lost everything and are still sleeping in tents and under bridges, in need of just about every human necessity. Greg delivered the donated items to a collection center in the South Charleston area where one nearby town recorded a high water level 10 feet higher than the record. SHIIP

Submitted by M. René Tarquinio, LBSWH There have been an increasing number of individuals who have a Health Savings Account, and people are asking; “How does this work once I turn 65?” Following varied responses from the Social Security Administration (SSA), SHIIP recently contacted the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for specific guidance on HSAs and Medicare.

If you enroll in Part A or Part B of Medicare, you can no longer contribute to your HSA. Medicare does allow you to use any funds remaining in the HSA account after your Medicare begins as long as they are still used for qualified medical expenses (deductibles, premiums, copays, or coinsurances). If you’re 65 or older and work for a small company (less than 20 employees) you typically will need

to take Medicare when you first qualify. This is due to the fact that small employer plans generally pay secondary to Medicare. Failure to enroll in Medicare will result in little or no health coverage. If you work for a large employer (more than 20 employees) you may not need to have Medicare pay SHIIP, continued on page

Senior Spotlight

George Finkel and His Emmy Awards By Barbara L. Weber

G

eorge Finkel is a familiar face at the Calabash Senior Center. Everyone there knows he doesn’t like bread for lunch, but not many know he is a famous producer and director with three Emmys to his name. Finkel was born in France on July 29, 1936, the son of architect Maurice Herman Finkel. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1958 with a degree in communications. With three dollars in his pocket, he went to Chicago as a young ad salesman with Playboy Magazine. He also doubled as a model with the Playmates for Hefner’s first Bunny logo golf shirt and other garments. Finkel became syndication manager for the Hefner’s TV show, Playboy’s Penthouse.

Finkel moved to Rockford, Ill. to become an announcer and director. Rockford was a small market station that was run like a big city. Separate directors did one show in either weather, news, or sports, so Finkel gained lots of experience. It was in Rockford that he met and married his wife Lynn, and their son, Mike, was born. Three years later, they traveled to Indiana for another manager/operations opportunity at WFIE. In Evansville, his daughter, Lori, was born. Up next was a year with WFIL in Philadelphia, a major market, as production/operations manager. Finkel

helped open WPHL, a new UHL station. He spent four years as producer/director for Palestra Basketball with Bill Campbell and Richie Ashburn, broadcasting more than 50 games a year. There were the 76ers Road Games called by Al Meltzer and Charlie Swift. Live sports covered Temple football, an Eagles football game, tennis, bowling, and Phillies games.

An interview came up for a ”temporary” spot at NBC sports. Nineteen years later, Finkel left NBC after gaining fame producing, coproducing, or directing six Superbowls, six Orange Bowl games, six World Series, six NCAA Basketball Championships, and two hockey Stanley Cups. This included, in 1979, the highest rated basketball game in television history: Magic Johnson against Larry Byrd in the NCAA Finals. Finkel won three national Emmy Awards: one for the Super Bowl XIII, one for the 1982 World Series, and one for gymnastics at the 1988 Olympics. He freelanced and directed five Mummers Parades on WHPL, 10 years of Miami Dolphins pre-season football games, and he produced 88 Houston Rockets games. He was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame. Finkel has been to Moscow, China, and Hawaii, his favorite place. In 1992, his wife Lynn died, and in 1994, Finkel married Barbara in Hawaii. They lived in South Jersey for 11 years until Barbara retired from teaching and they moved here. Finkel enjoys reading his newspaper and taking part in the exercises at the Calabash Senior Site.

Jackie and Warren Dalrymple are among the first of the Yoo-Hoos that began meeting at Sunset Beach 14 years ago.

Most days at Sunset Beach, North Carolina, you will find the YooHoos gathered. These kindred spirits with the old-timey moniker meet in friendship at the beach. “Some days as many as 30 friends will gather, or as few as five on other days,” said Beverly Morgan, a native of Concord, North Carolina. “The number doesn't matter, it’s the time shared that is important. If a bad day happens, we meet at the beach and we are automatically happy.” Morgan moved to Calabash, N.C. with her husband, Jace, in 2007. A retired teacher, she still substitutes at Shallotte Middle School. She also cleans beach houses to stay active and healthy. Morgan is passionate about people and it is in this passion that you will hear “yoo-hoo” as she waves to the many beach friends she considers family.

“It doesn't matter if we have 10 cents or 10 million dollars, we are here for each other,” Morgan said. “Good people who love and respect

our friendship." Max Blake answered Beverly’s yoo-hoo. Blake is 86 and walks five miles a day from Sunset Beach to Bird Island and back. He moved to Sunset Beach after a 40-year career with International Nickel in Huntington, W. Va. After his wife died in 2011, Blake found comfort in walking the beach. “Personal history is not important. It’s who we are now that is important,” Blake said. “It is a good feeling to know that we have become family over the years. We are here for each other, sharing life through both happy and sad times.” Steve and Janet Bahniuk retired to Calabash from Red Hill, Pa. Steve worked for Pecora Corporation, while Janet was a supervisor for Cherry Dale Farms.

They both cherish their Yoo-Hoo family. “We celebrate birthdays, enjoy good food, have fun listening to music, and share quality time together,” Janet said. Erin Moore-Hall vacations at Sunset Beach with her daughter Abby Jo, 7, and son Griffin, 13. “The beach family may not be blood, but we are connected through heart and love…. If I have issues anytime, I know I can count on my beach family for prayer, support, guidance and love,” Moore-Hall said. Other Yoo-Hoos include Marvin and Virginia Sherron, who relocated to Calabash from Durham; Warren and Jackie Dalrymple, who moved here from Yoo-Hoo, continued on page 31

Congratulations, Silver Samurai Seniors! Sensei (Instructor) Dean Sutzer teaches Samurai Sword at the Brunswick Center at Southport. Students earned their first promotion to the rank of Menkyo Chuden Iaijutsu/ Kenjutsu, Green Belts in the Samurai Sword arts. The Samurai sword is the most notable weapon of the Japanese Samurai warriors. The Samurai Sword class is low impact; movements are performed slowly to start, using only a wooden sword. Students learn numerous fighting skills of the samurai warriors in an enjoyable yet invigorating way. The cane or walking stick is a practical defensive weapon for daily walking and hiking. These are the old ways of protecting yourself. There are no high kicks or crazy movements. Class is geared toward our bodies that have been around a while. The class is relaxed, friendly, and has it all: improved balance, concentration, coordination, and flexibility. Try this class on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. at the Brunswick Center at Southport. Cost is $4 per class.

The Origins of Oktoberfest On October 12, 1820, a royal wedding was held between Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of SaxonyHildburghausen. Citizens of Munich, Germany, were invited to celebrate the royal event by attending the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates. Horse races in the presence of the royal family marked the close of the event. The decision to repeat the horse races in subsequent years gave rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest... ...but that’s only part of the story. Bavarians loved to drink their beer. Traditionally brewed beer was available year round, but paled in comparison to the discovery of a “good” beer—a lager—which could only be brewed in cooler Fall weather. When Fall came and lager was again available, the Bavarians threw a huge party in celebration of the return of “good” beer. Hence, Oktoberfest's tradition of beer drinking was more or less mainly attributed to the discovery of brewing a better beer. It just so happened that there was a royal wedding at that time, too! AVON 39 is a fundraiser for breast cancer. Funds raised during this 39-mile sponsored walk helps pay for research, awareness, education, screening, and providing assistance for families currently battling breast cancer. The 2016 event takes place at various locations throughout the US beginning in Sept. 2016 and ending in July 2017. Seniors can participate (or help), too! Our own fitness instructor, Angela Ruel walked last year’s event! Even our seniors rallied to support this worthy cause. Below is a picture from last year’s event. For more information or to register for the event, to www.avon39.org or call 1-888-426-WALK.

Meet Our Instructors! This month get to know Instructors Kathryn Stutey and Keith Webb. Kathyrn Stutey, Zumba Gold Instructor, fell in love with fitness when her mother took her to the gym with her when Kathyrn was entering high school. As a teen, exercise quickly became her favorite way to manage stress and increase energy and self-esteem. Kathryn has been teaching Zumba for 3 years and added a Zumba Gold license to her Basic Zumba training a couple of years ago. She’s been teaching Zumba Gold for 2 years now. Kathryn joined our “exercise family” in July 2016 and says “I loooove working with this *senior+ crowd. Seniors have been the most lively and appreciative participants! They inspire me with their commitment to staying active and young at heart.” Why take Zumba Gold? The classes are “...FUN, so we release stress and tension. We increase our mobility by activating muscles that don't get attention in day-to-day life. We keep our minds sharp by practicing coordination as we master simple steps, getting an effective cardiovascular workout to fun rhythms from around the world!” Kathryn encourages folks to try Zumba Gold (which is designed especially for “older” bodies that appreciate a gentler exercise program that still gets results). Kathryn modifies movements for those with health concerns so you can still get the benefit without injury. “What's unique about Zumba, is that it doesn't FEEL like Photo by Margarete O’Leary exercise because you're having so much fun! It's great for people who dislike exercise or who feel the need to try something new! It's a very judgment-free atmosphere. I lead with verbal and nonverbal cues and keep the choreography very basic so that ANYBODY can do it, even without dance experience. Don't be scared to try something new for your health and fitness. You CAN do it, and you deserve to have some fun while you're at it! No experience necessary. Come with an open mind. I hope to dance with you soon.” Kathryn substitute teaches at Gold’s Gym in Shallotte and hosts online health support groups from home. She was born and raised in Idaho and is grateful to be here in NC by the beach!

Kathryn, far left, in yellow. Note the young “seniors-intraining” at the back. They are: Kathryn’s daughter (in pink) and her friend. Proves you’re never to young (or old) to Zumba Gold!

Keith Webb, Tai Chi/Qigong Instructor, has meditated all her life “without really knowing what it was.” She began training and teaching Reiki in 2009 where she was introduced to Qigong. She decided to study it further and eventually earned her teacher certification. As a senior, Keith understands the limitations facing others and advocates participating in this “...system of slow, gentle meditation movements…” which encourages “...breathing, focus, and movement – all of which contribute to our well-being.” Keith even provides handouts to take home. Keith says “I absolutely love working with people, and especially with seniors. I am thrilled to share these teachings with others who are interested in participating in the maintenance and improvement of their health. I have seen participants improve their mobility, balance, breathing, and coordination through their practice in my classes.” Keith’s classes are movement classes which can be modified to fit any physical condition. There should be no pain in her classes. The movements don’t require strength, endurance or balance—they build it. No special equipment (or “outfits!”) needed—not even a mat. Her classes instill a state of calmness, reduces stress, and promotes better health. While Keith has taught Tai Chi/Qigong at the Center for a year now, she’s been teaching Reiki since 2012. As a senior manager at the National Gallery of Art, she also taught her staff on an ongoing basis. Her classes at the center include seated (folks with mobility issues; primary focus is on upper body and breath work); standing (same breath work as the seated class, but involves moving the entire body—balance is a focus point); and meditation (New! Basics of mindfulness primarily, but will explore other types of meditation). Keith has personally found the practices of Tai Chi, Qigong, Reiki, and meditation to be life changing promoting calmness, centeredness, and mindfulness. “With these daily practices, I Photo: Courtesy approach life’s challenges Joanne Matthews differently, more Sun News holistically, and with better Keith Webb, far left, in black understanding. It is personally rewarding to share them with others with the possibility that they may find benefit as well.” Keith will also begin teaching at Arbor Landing this fall. She lived in Washington, DC, where she earned her MBA and spent her entire career. She moved to Brick Landing in 1999.

for your health expenses. You may choose to delay Part B and enroll at a later time. However, you cannot decline Medicare Part A. The only exception to this Part A rule is if you’re not accepting Social Security benefits. When you decide to stop contributing to the HSA (and if you are still currently working) you can enroll in Part A and get 6 months of retroactive coverage. There are strict tax laws surrounding HSAs which can result in significant penalties to individuals who do not follow all of the requirements as they pertain to Medicare participation. The key to timing of enrollment in Medicare, beginning with Social Security, and HSAs is very important to prevent the beneficiary from suffering penalties. Medicare Part A will always be 6 months retroactive as described above. There is no way to request that it not be made retroactive.
