October is for pumpkins, and Coastal Carolina Camera Club charter member Irene Dowdy captured these Brunswick County pumpkins for our cover, and she supplied all the needed files right before the hurricane. Thanks so much, Irene!

urricane Florence has blown through, but the cleanup— and the legacy— will continue for some time. When news of Florence bearing down on us hit the airwaves, we all watched carefully as the storm grew in strength, aiming directly at us, never wavering. We’ve seen hurricanes before, so planning began. In the rush to prepare, Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. (BSRI ) followed the county’s lead in closing operations. Brunswick County schools closed as of Tuesday morning, and the transit system closed at noon Tuesday in order to transport participants to shelters. BSRI programs and operations were cancelled for the week as of Monday, Sept. 10. Sites and centers were closed, BSRI facilities and vehicles were secured, and loose items were moved indoors. Staff and meal deliver volunteers worked Sept. 11 to process Meals on Wheels and deliver shelf-stable meals to homebound participants (see page 12). We wanted to make sure everyone had enough to eat during this disaster.

“BSRI has been in constant communication with Brunswick county offices, including the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as assisting area shelters as needed,” said Jim Fish, BSRI’s President and CEO. “Due to BSRI’s advance planning, there have been no reports of any of BSRI’s senior participants being in dire distress.” But both participants and centers

are dealing with many challenges. There is power at the Shallotte center, but at press time, there is no power at the Southport, Supply, or Calabash facilities. “BSRI is in communication with the town of Leland in hopes of soon having power at the Leland facility and possibly opening the facility as a feeding site,” Fish said. All BSRI staff have been accounted for and are safe.

Brunswick County is a low-lying coastal area, and we knew it would take a hit from Florence. At one point the storm was predicted to come in as a Category 4; later it was forecast to move slowly and cause flooding, and this proved to be true. Our participants include those who have weathered many a hurricane and those for whom Florence was their first. BSRI includes people who have the resources to evacuate easily and those for whom it’s nearly impossible—and many in between. We have people living on high inland ridges and some whose homes are very vulnerable to storms. People made the call to stay or go based on their circumstances, and both had their difficulties. And the aftermath is continuing now. BSRI is closed this week, and possibly later. By the time you are reading this Buzz, many of us will probably just be coming back to normal life.

One of the surprisingly beautiful parts of a natural disaster is the goodness it can bring out in people. People offered to help in many ways, even rescuing people by boat. People who lost power emptied their rapidly-defrosting freezers and grilled up banquets for the neighborhood. People went into the streets with chain saws to clear fallen trees and make a path for a cars. Neighbors knocked on each other’s doors to check on them and offer assistance. Some neighbors met each other for the first time, taking the time to stand outside and share stories of the storm.

It’s been a challenge to assemble the Brunswick Senior Buzz without electricity. A friend gave us an inverter to charge a laptop in the car. We have communicated via mobile phone, and have some ideas of where to get Wifi to send files to the printer. I’ve missed storm status reports on TV, my fridge, and air conditioning. But I have also enjoyed the loss of electricity a bit. It was nice to have a breeze through the house, to chat with neighbors in the street, to sleep in total darkness. I’ll be glad to make coffee again, but I may have made some new friends that I hope to keep even when the power comes back on. The Flu Can Be Dangerous for Seniors By Denise Hayes, M.S., R.Ph., Senior Care Concierge Pharmacist

R

egardless of your health, influenza is highly contagious and uncomfortable. But unlike a simple cold, the flu can be life-threatening if you are 65 or older. As you get older, your immune system gets weaker, and your risk for catching the flu and developing complications increases. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 60 percent of flu-related hospitalizations and 85 percent of flu-related deaths occur in people 65 and older. And if you are like 75 percent of seniors who have at least two chronic conditions, you are even more vulnerable to complications such as pneumonia.

Getting a yearly flu vaccination is the best way to help protect yourself from this dangerous illness. However, seniors with chronic conditions typically have a lower protective response after a regular flu vaccination compared to younger and healthier people. This can make the flu vaccine less effective in protecting against the flu; and the nasal spray isn’t recommended for anyone over 50. The good news is that new high-dose flu vaccines

have been developed and approved for people 65+. These high-dose vaccines are intended to provide improved immune response versus the regular flu vaccine. Ask you healthcare provider about which vaccine is best for you.

There are many different flu viruses and they are constantly changing. The U.S. flu vaccines is reviewed annually and composed to match circulating flu viruses. It takes about two weeks after vaccination to protect against flu. Flu season has already started: Recent flights coming into the U.S. had passengers with the flu. The CDC recommends that you get vaccinated by the end of October. This is your best protection before the flu starts spreading here in Brunswick County. PharmAssistUs can provide tips to avoid the flu and complications, and other services for seniors that include medication review (safety, risk, cost reduction), ‘ask a pharmacist’ recommendations, and concierge services. Go to PharmAssistUs.com for more information.

orth Carolina is entering its “blue moon” mid-term election cycle—meaning that, with the exception of a few judicial contests, no major statewide race (for example, a U.S. Senate or gubernatorial contest) will be on the ballot this year in the Tar Heel State. Instead, Tar Heel voters will elect representatives to the U.S. Congress and the N.C. house and

senate, as well as state judges, local commissioners, and boards of education.

Now is the time to ask questions! Then vote your convictions.

eriatric depression is a mental disorder that affects older adults. Feeling alone, sad, or having anxiety can stem from a variety of life changes such as losing a loved one or dealing with chronic diseases. Depression can be a hard thing to cope with in life. But it can be treatable.

Sadness

Worrying excessively

Frequent crying

G 

Difficulty sleeping

Medication - Antidepressants can be prescribed by a physician. Lifestyle Changes - Alter your daily habits such as increasing exercise, eating a healthier diet, and getting social support from family and friends.

Join a Support Group - Connect with others who are going through the same changes as you. This will help to support and motivate each other. It also will develop a place to meet and talk, which is beneficial.

The best way to help someone with depression is to be around and actually just listen to them. Try not to judge or criticize – typically that can shut people out. Also, be patient and understanding towards them to show your support.

Best Books for Cool Fall Evenings By Donna Ruth Morgan

M

ost seniors want to live at home, independently, for as long as possible—and Lynda Shrager’s Age In Place: A Guide to Modifying, Organizing, and Decluttering Mom and Dad’s Home (2018) is a handy resource for that goal. This book is a proactive framework for evaluating if and when help is needed. It has plenty of resources, excellent checklists for adapting the home environment for safety, and includes tips on the best medical equipment fixes. Ms. Shrager shares a wealth of professional experience from her years as an occupational therapist, and her “Hacks for Health and Home” in each chapter provide a roadmap combining compassion with common sense. Nutshell review: A valuable preparatory resource for the sunset years. Sarah Perry’s 2017 Victorian gothic, The Essex Serpent, offers remarkable characters and well-drawn struggles between science and spirituality, good and evil, haves and have-nots. The mix of heartwarming and bonechilling scenarios are like pearls strung through the story. Picturesque settings in 1890s London and Essex, a terrorizing sea monster, and an unlikely love story render a “can’t put it down” book that engaged my curiosity and

satisfied my longing for authenticity in historical fiction. Nutshell review: Fascinating examination of social contradictions and male/ female psyches, leaving the reader “never sure of the difference between thinking and believing.” The Boys in the Boat (2013) by Daniel James Brown— subtitled Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics—is an overlooked, outstanding book destined for the big screen. Depression-era college athletes and those who coach them rise above emotional and physical difficulties in Mr. Brown’s wonderful portrayal. Who doesn’t love underdogs conquering personal and social issues to become the best of the best? Come-frombehind grit and determination inspired this reader to identify with and cheer for a group of young men who beat the odds to achieve highest honors. Nutshell review: Heartwarming and patriotic—my favorite nonfiction book in quite a while.

Time to Bring Plants Indoors for Winter By Patrick Naughton October is a good time to begin to prepare outdoor plants for moving indoors for the winter.

If the plant has grown during the summer, prune or repot the house plant to reduce its size. If you are pruning it back, don’t prune back more than one-third of the plant. Also prune the roots an equal amount to the foliage. If you are repotting, repot to a container that is at least 2 inches larger than the current container.

When acclimating a houseplant, start by bringing the house plant in at night for a few days. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of time the plant spends indoors until it is indoors full time. This should be done before the first frost, usually Nov. 5 in Brunswick County. Light, water, temperature, air movement, humidity, fertilization, and proper growing medium are the key factors that affect plant growth. Most outdoor plants are accustomed to high to medium amounts of light. Try to find a location indoors near a window that gets sun. Clean the window to increase the amount of light coming through. Windows can lose heat in a room

First check to see if the plant is has any unwanted insects like aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Use a hose and wash the plant off before bringing it inside. Treating the plant with neem oil can help as well.

Clustering houseplants to create a canopy of leaves helps create beneficial humidity levels indoors.

and create a cold spot. If the window begins to feel cold, move the plant at least a 6 inches away from the window. Most houseplants grow best in day temperatures around 70ËšF and night temperatures around 60ËšF. Avoid placing plants in locations that are subject to periodic cold drafts, like outside doors.

Many houseplants can grow in relative humidity levels of 40 percent to 60 percent. The typical humidity level in homes is only 10 percent to 15 percent. To increase the humidity level around plants, group them together to form a canopy of leaves. The leaves transpire to create moisture but also trap moisture from the air, creating a humid climate around the plants. It is also beneficial to place pebbles in a saucer and place the plant on it. Pour in just enough water

Neem oil is a relatively nontoxic insecticide that helps kill harmful creepy crawlies on your plants before you bring them inside for winter. Test on one leaf first and follow package directions.

to where the water is just below the top of the pebbles. Do not allow the plant container to contact the water this could allow any fertilizer that that leached out to be absorbed back in may burn the roots. In addition, the pot can become waterlogged, causing the plant to develop root rot. Misting plants with a water bottle only raises the humidity for a short period of time. Plants need less water indoors, so let the soil dry out before watering. For more information on growing plants in containers, visit https://bit.ly/2NHdrG3.

Open Enrollment begins on Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. This is the time of year when you can make changes to your prescription drug plan or Medicare Advantage Plan. Something as simple as changing your pharmacy could save you hundreds of dollars, so it’s a wise idea to review your coverage every year. BSRI has a total of five coordinating sites throughout Brunswick County with experienced volunteer counselors who can assist you with navigating the Medicare maze. Appointments fill up quickly, so please call (910) 754-2300 for your appointment today, or you can request an appointment at your local center.

New cards are now being mailed to North Carolina Medicare beneficiaries. These cards are being mailed in no specific order and couples living in the same household will not get cards at the same time. CMS (Medicare) has not provided a time frame as far as completion date of the mailings. Beneficiaries are encouraged to provide a copy of the new card to all of their providers. SHIIP recommends

you keep your old card in a secure place for a few months just as a backup if needed.

Beginning in 2019, The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 is allowing for a 25% Donut Hole discount. The cost of your brand name drugs in the 2019 Donut Hole will be 25 percent of the retail price instead of 30 percent as originally planned. More of the discount will be shifted onto the pharmaceutical suppliers rather than the Medicare Part D plans. This will move people with higher drug costs (more than $678 retail per month) through the Donut Hole at a faster rate, allowing for Catastrophic Coverage to occur sooner. This means that during the 2019 Donut Hole (and beyond) you will pay 25 percent of retail brand name costs and receive 95 percent of the retail drug cost as credit toward meeting your total out-of-pocket costs.

October 18, 2018: Introduction to Medicare Class, 1-3 p.m., BCC Southport Campus. Please call Lisa at (910) 755-8083 to register. Medicare presentations at centers and sites: Please check your center’s calendar in the Buzz for times and locations.

Senior Spotlight Meet Willie!

“Love everybody and find ways to serve others.” This is what Leland Center Participant Willie Jenkins said when asked what “words of wisdom” he would like to share with us. Willie is a living example of his own advice. Since April of 2017, Mr. Jenkins has offered his caring, compassionate, and selfless nature with our Center at Leland Family. If there is something that needs to be done, Wille is the man to ask. Whether it is calling roll call for lunch, guiding devotions and prayer, delivering food from the food bank, or carrying lunch trays for our physically disabled, he serves with a smile and a positive attitude. Born in Brunswick County on April 8,1943, Willie left North Carolina to work as an aircraft inspector in Connecticut. In 1965 he married his beautiful wife Elsie and in 1972 moved back to NC to work for General Electric before retiring in 2000. When asked about his accomplishments, he stated that he is most proud of his 53 years of marriage and being a father to 5 children. Willie continues to participate and volunteer at The Brunswick Center at Leland because he enjoys the fellowship with our growing community. He feels most happy when he can show his love for people by serving with a grateful heart. Thank you for being a part of our BSRI Center at Leland Family Willie! We are honored to know you!
