Great Service Starts with I

Benefit from Brunvoll’s expertise Experience has taught us that a good dialogue from the start is vital. Brunvoll offers advice on all aspects of thruster system installation for your vessel.

4

Pre-installation

Installation

We provide tailored documentation such as specifications, drawings, instructions and installation manuals.

For all installations, our after-sales service team is available for support. Our personnel can answer questions and provide any information needed. For installation of retractable azimuth thrusters, a Brunvoll technician will supervise critical phases of the work.

ISSIONING

h Installation and Commissioning

Years of optimal and costeffective performance start with installation and commissioning supported by experts. This phase lays the foundation for Brunvoll’s renowned reliability. It is one of the keys to low lifecycle cost, minimal downtime and maximum return from your investment. It also forms the basis for Brunvoll’s warranty.

Commissioning During commissioning, we check that every aspect of the thruster system has been installed correctly, including component location, hull integration, alignment, piping and wiring. At the Harbour Acceptance Test (HAT), we run the thruster and check all basic functions. We test the interfaces with other systems and tune controls. At the Sea Acceptance Test (SAT), we set the full thruster load and fine-tune the system. We may attend other tests such as dynamic positioning and FMEA.

A Brunvoll delivery A Brunvoll delivery is only regarded as complete when we are confident that the thruster system is functioning optimally. This forms the basis for low life-cycle costs and thruster durability. This is not the end of the story…

… it’s the beginning of a long-term relationship of service and support. 5

“The sea has shaped our lives for generations” “I grew up with boats and ships and the North Sea. On this wild and jagged coastline, there’s a culture of doing the job right. Every day, you see how much depends on that. So fine-tuning thrusters, and getting them to work at their best, is a very satisfying job.”

“Check it straight away” “A noise that doesn’t sound right. An alarm you cannot explain. It makes sense to check it straight away, before a small problem develops into a bigger and much more expensive one. Multidisciplinary Brunvoll expertise is just a phone call away. Go straight to the source.”

Communication with shipowner and crew

Brunvoll’s TSM database

Alert and observant crews are important for optimal maintenance: planning, decision-making and setting priorities. Time and costs can be saved when crew members report vital information such as: • Running hours • Oil analysis • System checks – any alarms? • Any leaks or water content in thruster? • Noise and/or vibration? • Observations and gut feelings?

The thruster service management (TSM) base contains detailed records: • Thruster system history since delivery and any modifications • Complete Brunvoll service history • Record of all spare parts from Brunvoll • Operational statistics matching customer needs • Observations to check at next docking Service technicians have information at their fingertips

A typical Brunvoll service job

More extensive service work

Replacement of the propeller blade seal is an example of a small service task. Larger jobs include replacing wear parts while the gearbox is in the tunnel. This work requires dismantling of the propeller blades and removing the propeller hub to access the thruster internals.

– might involve the removal of the gearbox from the tunnel and setting it up in the workshop for closer inspection. When time is short, we can replace the gearbox. But there is generally no need to have a back-up thruster. Brunvoll thruster systems are service-friendly and made to last for the lifetime of the ship.

Taking care of what we learn from each service job Each service job is documented in the Thruster Service Management database. Experience from service work and ideas for improvements are brought back to Brunvoll – so that we can offer even better products and service in the future. 19

With Dynamic Positioning (DP) operating 24/7 in some of the world’s most challenging environments, offshore service vessels demand the ultimate in robust and reliable thruster technology. A thruster failure could put the safety of the crew and the vessel at risk. A day of downtime may cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“Seven Pelican” – thrusters in the sea since 1985 In an extraordinary test of endurance, the 4 Brunvoll tunnel thrusters on board the Diving Support Vessel (DSV) “Seven Pelican” have accumulated more than 25 years of operation.

New charters may require new functions

Upgrading Brunvoll Control Systems on older vessels

Vessel upgrades bring new needs and new opportunities – a thruster upgrade can improve the functionality and profitability of the ship.

Brunvoll thrusters are so robust and rugged that they may outlive the original control, alarm and monitoring system.

• Shipowners draw on Brunvoll’s expertise to find optimal solutions • Upgrades may be a way to take advantage of new technology • Upgrading to Dynamic Positioning often requires new thruster capacity • Brunvoll upgrades are fully compliant with classification rules

Upgrade may also be needed when an existing thruster is transferred to another ship. We have long experience in upgrading older Brunvoll thrusters to function with new BruCon technology for control, alarm and monitoring. Brunvoll’s detailed knowledge of the system and advanced testing tools enable fast and efficient upgrades.

Control system upgrade – Nordkapp class Brunvoll has upgraded the control, alarm and monitoring system for the Nordkapp class of Norwegian Coast Guard vessels: “KV Nordkapp”, “KV Senja” and “KV Andenes”. Each of these ice-strengthened vessels has one Brunvoll Retractable Azimuth thruster system. The upgrade gives the vessels a flexible BruCon interface with the potential for dynamic positioning and other sophisticated functionality in the future. The thrusters on the Nordkapp class vessels have provided reliable service since they were delivered early in the 1980s.

“Excelsior” repair with the vessel afloat A carbon fibre rope caused damage when it was sucked into a thruster on the LNG tanker “Excelsior”. In a demanding operation with the vessel afloat Off Port Limit Singapore, Brunvoll’s service technician worked together with the vessel’s Chief Engineer and crew to replace the thruster gearbox and propeller blades.

The vessel was trimmed to raise the thruster tunnel above the waterline. The technicians and parts were lowered to the thruster tunnel using the ship’s crane. After the challenging repair job, the thruster tunnel was submerged again. The thruster started smoothly – and “Excelsior” was back in operation without dry docking.
