A fusion of Swiss handcraft and Norwegian nature

A young dynamic watch brand The designer Rune Bruvik had a dream, a dream to design his own watches. On a family vacation in 1992 to Geneva as 15 year old, Bruvik got his first Swiss Made wrist watch, and his passion for fine timepieces came about. 18 years later this dream became a reality. Founded in 2009 the brand has been quickly renowned for its unique concept. BRUVIK allows customers to own a piece of nature by implementing nature elements into the timepieces. The elegant yet sporty collection from BRUVIK embody the values of time, as it fuse the unique elements from the best of Norwegian nature with modern watch design.

Wild, remote and profoundly inhospitable

Nothing But Time Time and space are inseparable concepts, and the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard makes that perfectly clear.

With the exception of a few permanent settlements (the northernmost in the world) Svalbard is space shaped not by man, but rather by wind and rain, ice and sea. Time itself designed the Svalbard islands, and what masterpieces they are. Wild, remote and profoundly inhospitable, the islands will only reveal their unparalleled beauty to those brave enough to head north in search of it, despite the dangers lurking beneath the northern lights. Despite the blizzards slowing everything down to the point where it feels like you’re only moving in time, not in space. The landscape remains unchanged when all is white in all directions. All dimensions disappear, except for the fourth. Time always remains. That’s when your BRUVIK Svalbard timepiece will let you know, down to the millisecond, just how much time has passed since the last time your eyes sought rest at your wrist. And then, when the weather clears and you finally spot one of Svalbard’s majestic mountains on the horizon, you’ll know that it was time well spent.

9

Coming Home After visiting the arctic archipelago of Svalbard, designer Rune Bruvik knew that the islands would someday inspire a range of watches. Years later, sitting in his office wearing the finished prototype on his wrist, he immediately fell in love with the watch. What he didn’t quite know was whether or not he had succeeded in capturing the wild nature of the landscape in such a sophisticated piece of design and engineering. The uncertainty was to be short-lived, and when he brought the watch to Svalbard in august 2013, he knew with absolute certainty. The watch was home. Here’s Rune’s own account of the journey to the northern end of Norway. When you first arrive at Svalbard it’s like stepping onto the surface of the moon. The landscape resembles nothing you’ll find anywhere else in Norway - or anywhere else on Earth, for that matter. It genuinely seems out of this world, and the stark contrasts of the characteristic Svalbard mountains - black volcanic rock at the bottom, partially covered by the blindingly white ice and snow lend themselves effortlessly to a watch design. The challenge is to do the landscape justice. Svalbard is ravaged by weather, worn by time. Rough, tough, empty and vast. Extremely vast. All this became part of the watch, and, to my relief, the finished product really seemed at home at Sval-

10

bard. The watch that had felt so good, so right, in the urban surroundings of the BRUVIK main office, felt equally good in the surroundings that inspired it. Slightly better, even. That was the most pleasing thing to me, personally. That assured me that we had succeeded.

Another goal of the trip was to capture photographic vidence of the landscape that inspired the watch. e Photographer Hanne Feyling is a resident of Svalbard, and hiring her would prove to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Knowing the islands like her own back pockets, she knew the perfect place and the perfect time to capture the perfect photograph. 20 minutes by car from Longyearbyen, the capital of Svalbard, just past the abandoned coal mine creatively named Mine 7, Feyling had found her location. She also knew when the light conditions would be at their best, early in the morning. Therefore, before the break of dawn, we had already collected our canine escorts, two magnificent gruskies (a mix between Greenland dog and husky), a power generator, a rifle for protection against polar bears, and we were on our way. Upon arrival a sense of awe struck the entire crew. This was exactly what we came for. Majestic mountains, clear skies, no sign of civilization or, lucky for us, polar bears. That day, the session lasted for three hours, but in my mind it’ll remain for much longer. In fact, I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. But if I do, I’ve got the pictures to remind me. And the watch, of course, to which I made one small adjustment upon returning home. The final piece of the timepiece puzzle, if you will, but I’ll keep that change as my little secret. Rest assured, it didn’t only make the watch better, it made it whole. I hope you’ll enjoy it. Yours truly, Rune.

The edge of the 612 meter drop of the mighty Langefoss waterfall

24

The Flow of Time “Wherever there is water, there is life.” This maxim holds true, here on Earth anyway. Water is the hallmark of our planet, so essential for life that it’s the very first thing we look for when exploring other planets, other worlds. On our planet, water comes in many forms. Salt or fresh, in oceans, rivers or great lakes. Or fjords, even, like the ones you’ll find in Norway. These steep, water-filled valleys carved out by ancient glaciers are spectacularly beautiful. Still, water is water, some might say, but isn’t there something special about a drop of water traveling down a small river in the western Norwegian mountains, about to rush over the edge of the 612 meter drop of the mighty Langefoss waterfall, down into the beautiful Aakrafjord? Isn’t that a fortunate drop of water? We would argue that it is, and that it is, in fact, water at its most beautiful. It’s that water you’ll find in the case back of your BRUVIK Fjord timepiece. Taken from a river on the very edge of the northern fjords, out of circulation, this will always be water which has seen the fjord, and nearly made it in. Like a brief moment, taken out of the flow of time, this drop represents a change of pace. A moment’s relief from the relentless ever forward flow of time. Look at your watch as you carry it through the concrete jungles that make up our urban lives. You’ll know when it’s time to see the fjords again.

HERITAGE

37

Forever Forward Towards the end of the 19th century, all but a few places here on Earth were conquered and mapped out by daring explorers. Though nearing the end of their era, these restless souls still had a few years left as the superstars of their time. There were, after all, still a few places in the world where no man or woman had ever sat his or her foot. One of the most dangerous, and therefore prestigious, destinations remaining was the North Pole. Unlike the South Pole which is located on a continental land mass, the northernmost point on our planet lies in the middle of an ocean, the Arctic Ocean. At first glance, the surrounding area could resemble land, but it is in fact ice, floating on water over 4000 meters deep. The first explorers of this region made their way by sailing as far north as possible during the summer, leaving the ship to freeze into the ice in the impossibly harsh polar winter, and making their way farther north by foot. The ship that was most adept at handling the arctic conditions was the Norwegian schooner “Fram”, or “Forward” in English.

It was used by both Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen, and is said to have sailed farther north (85°57’N) and farther south (78°41’S) than any other wooden ship. “Fram” was ahead of its time, and in some ways, a symbol of time itself. When frozen into the ice near the North Pole, you have no choice but to follow the stream. Go wherever it takes you, and try to stay afloat. Lesser vessels crumbled from the sheer pressure of the ice, but “Fram” was designed not to withstand the pressure, but to be lifted up by it. Designer Colin Archer respected the immense power of the ice, and didn’t try to fight it. The BRUVIK Arctic Ocean watches c elebrate the arctic pioneers, and their clarity not to fight neither the flow of ice nor time, with the respect that they deserve.

CERAMICA

45

Old Materials. New Ideas. The BRUVIK Ceramica line is about elegance and simplicity. The design is distinctly Scandinavian, with simple, clean lines and exquisite materials. Modern ceramic is a new take on an old manufacturing tradition. Heated to over 2000 degrees Celsius, before it’s quickly cooled back down, the finished product becomes virtually unscratchable. Its smooth, skin-friendly surface will keep smooth and skin-friendly for generations. No wonder this material, this way of making watches, is starting to gather momentum amongst the premium brands.
