This portfolio is a record of my continuing search for architecture semiotics in its historical, physical, and metaphysical context, in relationship to its user habits, building programs, materials, and tectonics. In this second half of the Radical Campus Studio, my curiously is attuned to the musicality of the building site, and my attempts to imagine a radical campus that would emphasize the attainment of harmony of the energetic everyday campus life, while providing multilayered settings to accommodate and celebrate the diversities in a university for now and the future. A radical campus is in its roots a quest for a way of survival. In order to service, a university must be a universal city, where “public“ place matters, for the matters of agreeing and disagreeing - a place to be fearless and free.

Right: Building site marked by the smoke stacks of Central Energy Plant seen from the banks of Red River

This chapter explores the energized project site in its physical presence and historical context. The hums of the adjacent energy plant with hot steam gushing out its chimneys, the seasonal flux of the nearby Red River and the shuffling of the trees, student chatters from student residences across the street, and the sound of trucks beeping and weaving through the services road network, all contribute to the energy and acoustic environment of the site. They are my sources of inspiration.

The proposed project is located on the existing parking lot area south of Central Energy Plant and east of Physical Plant, fronted by Freeman Crescent to the south, and Maclean Crescent to the east. The proposed site is approximately 43,000 sf (4,000 sm). Significant project site developments 1911-1913: Original portion of the Central Energy Plant was built by campus architects Samuel Hooper and V. W. Horwood 1946: An indoor sports arena was built on the south side of Central Energy Plant (project site) 1948: Veterans’ Village was built to accommodate WWII veterans choosing to attend university 1965: Central Energy Plant southwest addition was completed to accommodate campus growth.
