PROJECT DESCRIPTION: “Living a celebration. A gathering for an event which evokes time, outdoor living, the culinary arts, the essential and the future.” - RCR Architects A timeless living space which evoke a sense of desire to connect with the natural. RCR Architects has created a semi-open space which serves as an extension for events, outdoor dine-in & Banquets for the Le Cols restaurant in Olot Spain. The architectural structure seamlessly integrates with the topography of the site and by doing so, allows the magnificent surrounding countryside scenery to be unobstructed. The entire living space, which can sit up to 100150 guests is covered by a lightweight, clear acrylic roof which allows soft natural elements such as skylight to shineth through while deterring the harsh elements such as rainfall and hails away. Seamless Steel structures supporting the roof further elaborate the lightweight roof with its marginal profile. All these in parallel with the guests beneath to take center stage of the site.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Museum Soulages is home to a collection of contemporary arts across the globe. Completed in year 2014, the architectural concept took inspiration from the synthesis of materiality, darkness and natural light and composed in a narrative manner. To the unintended eyes, the architecture only become visible to through the foliage of shimmering trees and shrubs. With weathering Corten Steel wrapped around the facade, the architecture blends into the environment it is sitting on; an oasis of rocks and gravels while ageing with time in parallel with the landscape. The building form consist of 5 boxes which are vertically stacked together and pieced together with the theory of dominance & subordinate. The living spaces such as the corridor are layered with white galvanized steel, resulting in the manipulation of shadow from the orientation of the sun. Also, the design of Museum Soulages took in the conservation aspect of the artworks where certain spaces are kept away from the reaches of daylight.

As RCR Architects uses natural light as the primal element in Museum Soulages, design elements such as the skylight roof (as shown in Section 1, Detail 2 & Detail 3) lit up the living spaces while preventing direct natural light to affect the displayed artwork, especially the perishable. In the aspect of seasons such as summer and winter, Corten Steel wrapping the architecture keeps the living spaces within consistent. Thus, reducing the temperament impact on artworks.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Bell-Lloc winery had the aim of creating a warehouse for private wine production and tasting and is situated at the start of a valley in Girona. RCR’s building is a promenade with a series of spaces which act to create a ritual dedicated to the wine making process, the space acts to insulate you in an isolated underground world to provide a heightened experience. This is a result of its an experience dedicated to the senses, the ability to feel the silence and aromas of the wine process. The project is constructed through use of recycled steel and stone and consists of the promenade, cellars, chapel and auditorium spaces. The focus of sinking the building below the vines to root it into the site and having natural light ‘leaking’ into gaps through the recycled steel and sky lights to create an atmospheric space reminding the visitors of the weight of the earth around them.

While the wind is predominately from the sout- west during winter, the promenade runs lengh-wise across the mouth of the valley along with tree cover provides shielding from the strongest wind. Throughout the summer winds are much weaker. The building catches enough wind to help ventilate through the promenade, this is achieved because the winds are costal. The site is situated in the base of a valley just outside of Palamos, Girona in the Catalan Costal Ranges. The region near Girona is ideal for growing grapes due to the Mediteranean climate.

The aim of the building is to have controlled environment for the process of making wine and is achieved by insertion below ground and selecting steel and stone as the main materials, this requlres minimal input to regulate the environemnt inside the buidling. This is as a result of cleared by any remaining winds passing through and the skylight section. The tree line prodects the glass face of the building when the evening and morning sun comes into direct contact, only ocuing in a small window of the year demonstrated by the darker section on the sun diagram. The whole building is sunken below the ground- line of the vineyard which maximises the year round sunlight the grapes are able to absorb as is a critical factor in the grapes grown in this region. Lighting is a dominant feature inthe winery and is used to create an intimate atmosphere, this is done by limiting penetration to small amounts of ambient light and direct sunlight controlled through narrow skylights or tree cover, as such vistors can expect an ethereal journey through the Bell-Lloc winery.

2014
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project restores the ruins of a 13-century fort like castle located in Nègrepelisse, a small village in the south west of France. This project was won by RCR architects in a competition by featuring a design which incorporated and embraced the old historical structure of the Middle Age Castle with a modern structure to fit the function of an arts and cuisine centre. The design respected the historical integrity of the castle by restoring the ruins of to their former glory and introduced a new modern build composed of glass and steel. The materials in the new Centre fit the function and the use of this building by letting abundant light and ventilation. The large windows also allow light inward and let the activities of the centre flow outwards, creating a living structure. The floor plan of the new build features the inner courtyard winged on each side by a function centre so that the two bodies of buildings face each other: the kitchen, the exhibition hall and the projection or discussion room are on one side, with the workshops for guest artists, children and administration rooms on the other. The void of the castle courtyard creates a meeting place for both functions to interact and celebrate their creativity.
