The University is just 15 minutes from Providence, one hour from Boston and three hours from New York City. To reach Bryant, take Interstate 95 to Interstate 295. Take Exit 8B off I-295 and follow Route 7 North for one mile to the University entrance on the left. Turn right into the parking lot travelling toward Bulldog Stadium. BRYANT BASEBALL COMPLEX HOME OF BRYANT UNIVERSITY BASEBALL

he Bryant University Baseball Complex is home to the Division I Bulldogs through out the year, for both fall and spring sports seasons. Located on Bryant's beautiful 387acre campus, the Baseball Complex is situated between the Bryant Softball Complex and Sutton Field, formerly the summer home of the New England Patriots.

The field's dimensions go 330 feet down the left and right field lines, 385 feet to the right centerfield and left centerfield gaps and 400 feet to straightaway centerfield. The com plex is equipped with step down dugouts, twomound bullpens down each line and a full nineinning scoreboard. A new hitting cage area was added to the baseball field in the spring of 2008. The area includes two batting tunnels (75 ft. long), four tee/drill stations and a storage area for field screens and equipment. The Bryant Baseball Complex was built and first played on in the 2000 season. A recently installed lasergraded infield provides the Bulldogs with one of the finest playing sur faces in the Northeast. In addition to hosting several Northeast10 Conference tourna ment games, the Bryant Baseball Complex was home to the 2004 NCAA Division II Baseball Northeast Regional Championship, won by the Bulldogs.

The Elizabeth and Malcolm Chace Wellness & Athletic Center serves as the hub for the entire department of athletics. This 9,000-square foot facility houses Bryant’s fully resurfaced basketball and volleyball courts, the ﬁtness center, Jarvis Varsity Weight Room, pool, excercise studio and two practice courts, as well as home to the athletic department staﬀ.

The Fitness Center was completed in 2001 and is modeled after private-sector health clubs, featuring stateof-the-art selectorized circuit machines, treadmills, elliptical cross trainers, recumbent and virtual reality bikes and lifecycles, rowing machines and stairsteppers.

nder the leadership of President Ronald K. Machtley, Bryant University has evolved into one of the most progressive and leading institutions of higher learning in New England.

Hardly a president who remains behind the scenes when it comes to intercollegiate athletics, Machtley — a former collegiate student-athlete in his own right — has been an ardent supporter of Bulldog sports since becoming the University’s seventh president in 1996. Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excellence” initiated the most significant enhancements to the Bryant campus and community since the university’s move to Smithfield, and athletics was no exception. His New Century Plan saw the Bulldogs’ varsity athletics program expand to 22 teams with the addition of football, field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and in 2005 men’s and women’s swimming. The addition of the new varsity programs brought about an overhaul of the university’s athletics facilities as well. These renovations are highlighted by the construction of Bulldog Stadium, which serves as the home of the Bryant football, soccer and lacrosse teams, as well as state-of-the-art fields for baseball, softball and field hockey. Changes to Bulldog athletics also inspired and supported the introduction of the Wellness Center, which provides Bryant with a health and fitness center that is second to none. Before assuming the presidency at Bryant in June of 1996, Mr. Machtley was best known as one of Rhode Island’s leading public servants. He served

as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1988 to 1995 and was a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He was also the ranking Republican on the Small Business Committee’s Minority Enterprise, Finance and Urban Development Subcommittee and cofounder of the first House Working Group on Mental Health. As a reflection of the esteem in which his congressional colleagues held him, Mr. Machtley was elected president of his congressional class during each of his terms in the House. Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr. Machtley served as a partner in the international telecommunications law firm Wilkinson, Barker, Knauer & Quinn in Washington,•D.C. He is admitted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Florida. President Machtley is a 1970 graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He earned a juris doctorate from Suffolk University in 1978 and served on active duty in the United States Navy. Mr. Machtley also completed 25 years of service as a captain in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of the board of visitors of the United States Naval Academy from 1992 to 1995 and currently serves on the boards of several corporations, as well as on the boards of many civic and charitable organizations. President Machtley and his wife, Kati, have two children and reside on the Bryant campus with their two dogs, Sandy and Paddington. Their son, Todd, is an undergraduate at Muhlenberg College. Their daughter, Erin, graduated from Villanova University in 1998.

BILL SMITH Director of Athletics ill Smith came to Bryant University in•August of 2006, after spending eight years at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He joined the Iowa State athletic department as compliance director in 1998 before being promoted to associate athletic director in 2002 and then senior associate athletic director in 2005.

At Iowa State, Smith managed oversight responsibilities for compliance, academic services, sports medicine, athletic training and strength and conditioning. Under his leadership and direction, Iowa State successfully developed an Academic Plan for Student-Athlete Academic Services, resulting in ISU's 89 percent

student-athlete graduation rate. A total of 290 student-athletes have earned Big 12 Conference Honor Roll recognition since 2001. While serving as compliance coordinator at ISU, Smith was appointed chair of the Big 12 Conference compliance coordinators group. During that time, he was also a member of the University's steering committee for NCAA Certification. Prior to joining the Iowa State staff, Smith served as executive associate director for compliance and championships for the Patriot League for one year. In that role, he managed 19 conference events, was the conference's

primary liaison with all coaches’ groups and directed league-wide compliance education programs. A native of Auburn, NY, Smith graduated from Colgate University in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in political science. During his time at Colgate, Smith played both football and lacrosse (1985-89) and was awarded the Tom Dodge Award in 1989 for exemplifying outstanding effort, determination and performance. Smith and his wife, Maura, have four children: Molly, Liam, Daniel and Marin.

2010 SEASON PREVIEW BULLDOGS COMING OFF SUCCESSFUL DIVISION I DEBUT After a successful 2009 season – their first at the Division I level – the Bryant University Baseball Team is looking to follow up a 32 win season with another strong campaign, and firmly establish themselves as one of the premier Division I teams in the Northeast. For the first time, the Bulldogs’ 2010 schedule features a full slate of Northeast Conference (NEC) games. Outside the conference, Bryant’s regional opponents will include Boston College, UCONN, URI and Northeastern, among others. The Bulldogs will also travel outside the region to play a schedule highlighted by Virginia Tech and West Vir-

4.38. This season he will again be counted on as the team’s closer. Bullpen depth will be key for the Bulldogs. Senior Nick Laude (Wells, Maine), junior Matt Griswold (Berlin, Conn.), and sophomore Brian O’Neil (North Reading, Mass.) combined for 45 appearances last year in the later innings, and all three will be used in a similar capacity this year. Several other pitchers will be used in a variety of roles. Senior Brent Almeida (Fairhaven, Mass.) has been used as both a starter and a reliever throughout his career, and his versatility will make

Pitching Staff The Bulldog pitching staff will be anchored by 2009 First Team All-New England and All-Independent Pitcher of the Year, senior tri-captain Eric Polvani (Wallingford, Conn). Polvani (8-2, 2.04 ERA in 2009) hopes to cap off a successful career with one more strong season on the mound. In the program’s history, Polvani currently ranks 11th all time in Wins, 2nd in career ERA, 2nd in appearances, and 3rd in saves. Returning to the rotation in 2010 after missing the entire 2009 season with an injury is David O’Brien (Whitman, Mass). O’Brien was spectacular as a freshman in 2007, posting a 7-1 record and an ERA of 2.27. Junior right-hander John Michael Ryan (Worcester, Mass.) will also be a key starter for the Bulldogs. Ryan (3-4, 3.94) evolved into a reliable arm in 2009, and will bring his strong fastball and excellent off-speed pitches into the rotation. The bullpen will be anchored by junior Mark Andrews (Hillsborough, NJ). The left-hander recorded 10 saves in 2009 and posted an ERA of

him valuable this season. Senior Tom Baker (West Brookfield, Mass.), juniors Dan Walsh (Burlington, Mass.) and Sean McNiff (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Ross Fino (Ashland, Mass.) will be competing for time on the hill. The staff also features three freshmen who are in line to contribute right away. Right-handers Sal Lisanti (Bronx, NY) and Joe Michaud (Milford, Conn.), along with southpaw Tim Bessette (Waterbury, Conn.) all pitched well in the fall and will all have the chance to help the team on the mound. Freshman righty Kyle Leonard (North Merrick, NY) is a two-way player who has continued to improve as a pitcher.

Catcher Senior Jeﬀ Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) enters his fourth season as the Bulldogs’ starting catcher. A 2009 Second Team All-New England selection, Vigurs (.389 BA, 9 HR, 70 RBI) will bring a veteran presence both behind the plate and in the middle of the lineup in his second season as one of the team’s captains. Vigurs will be backed up by freshman Ryan Granat (Long Valley, NJ), who proved to be a solid backstop in the fall season. Junior Scott Merritt (Norwalk, Conn.) gained experience behind the

dish in the fall, and will provide depth at the position.

Infield The Bulldog infield is led by senior tri-captain Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, RI). The second baseman started every game in 2009, and he provides a versatile bat near the top of the lineup that will give the middle of the order plenty of RBI opportunities. Sophomore Jamie Skagerlind (Holden, Mass.) returns as the starting first baseman after a solid freshman season (6 HR, 31 RBI). His .993 fielding percentage (3 errors in 452 chances) in 2009 ranks 7th all time in Bryant history. Returning at third base is junior Tim Norton (Barnstable, Mass). Norton was the Bulldogs’ primary third baseman in 2009, and he showed in the fall that he is ready to step up as one of the team’s leaders. With the graduation of Pat McKenna, who was drafted by the Detroit Tigers, the Bulldogs are looking to replace a four year starter at shortstop. Multiple newcomers showed in the fall that they are capable of filling that void, and the competition has provided the team with tremendous depth in the infield. Sophomore David Soltis (Plainville, Conn.), a transfer from the University of Vermont, had an impressive fall season and will be an important part of the lineup this spring. Another transfer, junior Macky Cianciolo (Prospect, Conn.), brings a consistent approach at the plate and can play anywhere in the infield. Freshman Dan Muscatello (Hopkinton, Mass.) is a sure-handed defender who also runs well. He provides a versatile option late in games both defensively and on the bases. Junior Colin Dougherty (Lowell, Mass.), sophomore Dan Mello (Peabody, Mass.), and freshmen Pete Kelich (Jackson, N.J.) and Adam Claire (Litchfield, Conn.) will provide additional support at all four infield positions.

Outfield Bryant’s all time hits leader, senior Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.), returns as the starter in centerfield. Campbell (.375, 42 RBI, 50 runs) is an exceptional hitter who also provides top notch defense in the outfield. Through his first three seasons, Campbell ranks 8th or better in six different categories in the Bulldogs’ career record book. Junior Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.) will once again start in right field for the Bulldogs. English will bring a strong arm and reliable bat to the everyday lineup. Sophomore Connor Carignan (Norwich, Conn.) and freshman Kevin Brown (Northborough, Mass.) both had strong fall seasons, and will both see time in the outfield this spring. Brown also has experience in the infield, and will provide more depth there as well. Merritt and sophomore Mike DelPonte (Tewksbury, Mass.) have outfield experience, and both have proven to be strong, dangerous hitters – making them natural options for the designated hitter spot.

Pomona-Pitzer College he 2007 Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year, Bryant University head coach Jamie Pinzino enters his fifth season at the helm of the Bulldog baseball program. After 3 seasons at the DII level, Bryant Baseball made the leap to DI in 2009, and proved they belonged in their first season. The Bulldogs finished 2009 with an impressive 32-22 record, for a .593 winnings percentage, second behind Florida Gulf Coast for tops among reclassifying teams. The Bulldogs made some noise early in the 2009 season, finishing with a 9-2 record on their spring trip, including a win over Virginia Tech, and series wins over Richmond and James Madison. The northern schedule opened with the Bulldogs playing their first DI home game at the Bulldog Baseball Complex on March 15, taking home a 7-5 victory over Boston College. They continued their solid play up north, earning 14-7 record against New England opponents, a 6-2 mark against future Northeast Conference foes, and earning wins over some of the region's top DI teams, such as Maine, URI, and Northeastern. The Bulldogs found themselves ranked in various polls throughout the year, ending with a #4 ranking in the Ping!Baseball Northeast Poll, and a #5 ranking the NEIBA coaches poll. The postseason awards were numerous for the Bulldogs, with six players named to the All-Independent team (Eric Polvani, Jeff Vigurs, Mark Andrews on the first team), and Polvani earning Pitcher of the Year honors among Independents. Four players were selected to the All-New England NEIBA squad, with Polvani on the first team, and Vigurs, Kevin Cobb, and Nick Campbell to the 2nd team. Pat McKenna also capped off a terrific career by being drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 27th round of the MLB draft. The 32 wins in 2009 gave the Bulldogs 110 wins over the last three season, which breaks the mark of 99 wins set between 2002-04. In 2008, the program’s final year in Division II, Pinzino and his club set the school record for wins, finishing with a 4321 record, winning the NE-10 regular season title, and making their second straight appearance in the NCAA Northeast Regional Finals. In the final national polls, Bryant was ranked #25 in the Ping poll and #27 by Collegiate Baseball. Bryant opened some eyes across the country early in the 2008 season with a couple key victories on their spring break trip, including wins over #1 ranked and eventual National Champion Mount Olive (NC), who owned a 23-game win streak, and #6 West Chester (PA), who had won their first 16 games of the season. The Bulldogs went on to a 25-5 conference record in the NE-10, winning 16 of their last 17 conference games, and clinching the conference title the last weekend of the season with a 3-0, 1-0 doubleheader sweep at Pace. The key to Bryant's success in conference play was their depth and consistency in all areas of the

game. The Bulldogs ended league play second in hitting (.303 batting average), first in team ERA (1.55), and first in defense (.973 fielding percentage). Bryant was selected to their second consecutive NCAA appearance (6th overall) as the #2 seed in the region. After a loss to Dowling, the Bulldogs rattled off wins over CW Post, Dowling, and Caldwell, to setup a rematch of the 2007 Regional Final with Franklin Pierce. After a 12-10 victory in game 1, Pierce defeated Bryant in the nightcap, ending the Bulldogs season, one game shy of the World Series. At the end of the year, Bryant also found themselves ranked in the country in several statistical categories. The Bulldogs led the country in fewest walks allowed (2.55/game) and sacrifice bunts (78). The team also finished 8th in fielding percentage (.970) and 6th in double plays (61). Several Bulldogs were honored with post-season awards, including Eric Loh, Nick Campbell, and Jason Alexander, who were all selected 1st team all-conference. In 2007, the Bulldogs and Pinzino righted the ship in his second year, posting a 35-24 record (21-9 in conference). Picked to finish sixth overall in the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll in 2007, third in the league standings. But the postseason was even more fruitful. After upsetting top-seeded Franklin Pierce and second-seeded UMass-Lowell en route to a second-place finish in the conference tournament, the Bulldogs continued to roll in NCAA Northeast Regional, winning three games to finish second and falling just two wins shy of a trip to the College World Series. After the season, the Bulldogs took home their share of conference honors, with Junior Eric Loh (3rd team All-American) named NE-10 Pitcher of the Year, Jeff Vigurs named Freshman of the Year, and Pinzino taking home NE-10 Coach of the Year honors. The Bulldogs finished 5th in the country in ERA (2.79) and 3rd in double plays (65). In their first season together, 2006, Pinzino and the Bulldogs suffered through a rough start to the year, finishing with a disappointing 18-33 record. But despite the early struggles, they fought their way to a fifth-place finish in the Northeast-10 Conference with a 16-14 league record. Bryant dropped its first-round conference tournament game, 1-0, to eventual tournament champion UMass-Lowell. After four season, Pinzino's record at Bryant now stands at 128-100 (.561), for an average of 32 wins per season. During the three years at the DII level, this included a 6228 (.689) NE-10 Conference record, qualifying for the post-season all three years, and gathered 10 playoff victories (including 7 in the NCAA Regionals). In those three seasons, the Bulldogs placed 19 players on All-conference teams, including four 1st team players, a Pitcher of the Year (Eric Loh), and a Freshman of the Year (Jeff Vigurs). Prior to arriving in Smithfield, Pinzino spent one season at Assumption College in 2005, guiding the Greyhounds to an 11-28 record and 10-18 mark in the Northeast-10. Pinzino was an assistant coach at Tufts, his alma mater, for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, under head coach John Casey. Pinzino also held assistant coaching positions at Holy Cross (2002), Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Claremont, CA. (1998), Westboro American Legion (1997-98), St. John's High School (1999-2001) and was the head coach of the Northboro American Legion Program (1999-2004). A four-year varsity member of the Tufts baseball team, Pinzino helped lead the Jumbos to a berth, as the #2 seed, in the 1995 NCAA Division III Regional and was a member of three ECAC Championship teams, in 1994, 1996 and 1997. A 1993 graduate of St. John's High School (Shrewsbury, MA.), Pinzino earned the Pioneer Award during his senior season, helping lead the Pioneers to the Massachusetts State Finals. Pinzino graduated from Tufts University in Medford, MA. in 1998 with a degree in history. While back at his alma mater during his coaching days, he also earned a Masters Degree in Educational Studies.

Ponte joined the staﬀ in the 2008-09 season, where the team had a 32-22 record in their inaugural season in division 1 baseball. As a team Bryant posted a 4.64 team E.R.A. with two pitchers earning allNew England honors (Eric Polvani and Kevin Cobb). Along with working with the pitchers, Ponte will also be assisting with recruiting and the set-up of the Bulldog Baseball camps. Ponte had a distinguished playing career as a pitcher at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., where he was a part of three NEWMAC championship teams and helped the Lyons advance to NCAA regional play

in 2002, 2003 and 2005. Ponte ﬁnished his career with a 20-9 record, posting a 3.63 ERA in 238 innings pitched. Ponte graduated from Wheaton ranked among the program's leaders in wins, ERA, innings pitched and complete games. Ponte lives in Fairhaven, MA with his wife Erin. The couple just celebrated the birth of their ﬁrst child this October

oocher joins the Bulldog staﬀ for the 2010 season after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Wheaton College. While coaching at his alma mater, Koocher helped lead the Lyons to two conference championships and two New England regional appearances, working with the hitters and running the team's oﬀense as the third base coach.

He capped oﬀ his senior year with a New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England Second Team selection and was selected to appear in the NEIBA All-Star Game at Fenway Park. In addition to his recruiting responsibilities, Koocher will work primarily with the Bulldogs hitters, and he will help direct the team's oﬀense as the third base coach.

evin Cobb, a senior captain on last year's Bulldog squad, spent four years as a pitcher for Bryant, and now joins the coaching staﬀ as he enters his ﬁrst season as assistant coach.

Cobb's illustrious career saw him compile a 19-3 record on the mound while helping the Bulldogs to two NCAA regional appearances. Cobb captained the Bulldogs to a 32-22 record in the program's inaugural Division I season, ending the year with a perfect 7-0 record and earning All-New England honors. Cobb and his teammates earned 128 wins over his four years as a player, including 11 in postseason play.
