commencement Celebrating bryant university’s 153rd undergraduate class Achieve success beyond a career was the message Clayton M. Christensen, D.B.A., shared with the 752 graduates of the Class of 2016 during Bryant University’s 153rd Commencement on May 21.

President Ronald K. Machtley noted that the Class of 2016 graduates were the first to benefit from Bryant’s nationally recognized Innovation and Design Experience for All (IDEA) program and participate in NCAA Division I athletics.

Widely regarded as the world’s foremost authority on innovation and the No. 1 management thinker in the world, Christensen is the Kim B. Clark Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School and a best-selling author whose books include “How Will You Measure Your Life?” As an entrepreneur, he has started four different companies.

“I have seen this class have an unbelievable transformation from students wondering about their future to mature, sophisticated, and confident student leaders ready to go out and find their place in this world,” Machtley said.

“The career provides tangible and immediate evidence of achievement,” said Christensen, who also received an honorary doctorate of business administration during the ceremony. “But that’s different in the home… you need to implement a strategy for success to ensure happiness in the home.”

The University awarded three other honorary degrees during Commencement weekend:

Before receiving her degree, Alexandria Paxman ’16 (Swanton, VT) said she had mixed feelings.

Conaty Indoor Athletic Center is the East Coast's largest indoor practice facility in the NCAA I New England region. Bryant is the only private university in the region with a permanent facility of this scale. The building is adjacent to Conaty Park, the University’s baseball and softball complex, which was dedicated for Sue and Bill Conaty '67 in 2012.

As the human resources leader for over 300,000 GE employees worldwide, Conaty was widely acclaimed for his track record of innovation. He was the architect behind many of GE's frequently cited HR practices in the areas of workforce differentiation and succession planning, and served as a role model for others in turning HR organizations into strategic business partners. Conaty served as captain of Bryant's 1967 baseball team and was inducted into Bryant’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also recognized with the school's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999.

Andreas Armenis ’16 (Lynnfield, MA), who delivered the Student Charge, told his fellow graduates to align their passion with purpose and “consider today a defying milestone in a very long and blessed journey... what we all have achieved today as a unit is tremendous beyond belief.”

"Bryant is clearly a leader in athletic facilities at the Division I level in New England.” -President Machtley

Conaty Indoor Athletic Center, named in recognition of approximately $7.5 million in total campaign support from Sue and William J. Conaty ’67. Bill Conaty, Senior Vice President (Retired), Corporate Human Resources General Electric Company, is chair of the Bryant University Board of Trustees and co-chair of Bryant’s capital campaign.

Highlighting the importance of character in today’s society, Christensen said that people are measured every day by “helping people become better.”

Dr. Taoguang Wang, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Beijing Institute of Technology Zhuhai and an invaluable partner in the creation of Bryant Zhuhai, received an honorary doctorate of business administration. Rhode Island Supreme Court Justice Maureen McKenna Goldberg, J.D., received an honorary doctorate of humane letters. J.L. “Lynn” Singleton, longtime president and CEO of the Providence Performing Arts Center, received an honorary doctorate of humane letters and was also the distinguished speaker during the Graduate Programs Commencement on May 19.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – On Saturday, May 14, Bryant University held dedication ceremonies for its new Conaty Indoor Athletic Center. The 80,000-square-foot facility is a key component of Bryant Builds, the largest and most transformative facilities initiative since Bryant’s move from Providence to Smithfield 45 years ago. In total, this year Bryant is adding more than 250,000 square feet of dramatic academic and athletic facilities. The landmark construction is made possible by more than $30 million in leadership gifts already received for Bryant’s capital campaign, Expanding the World of Opportunity: The Campaign for Bryant’s Bold Future.

Designed to provide a venue for practice 365 days a year, despite the harsh New England winter, Conaty Indoor Athletic Center features a state-of-the-art indoor turf field with a full 120 yards of turf as well as coaches’ viewing platforms and other ancillary spaces. The building will benefit student-athletes on Bryant’s 22 NCAA Division I teams, as well as student club intramural sports.

People are measured every day by “helping people become better”

He noted, “It’s a wonderful profession to be parents, faculty, and managers, because in every one of these professions, we have opportunities to help the people we work with become better people.”

“I am so happy to be graduating and happy to be walking under the Archway,” the iconic gate students first step through at Commencement. “But I’m sad because I’m going to miss this special place and these special people that I’ve met along the way.”
