Meandering the Westside of Los Angeles, through the highly diverse neighborhood of Del Rey, a residence of architectural stature caught our attention. There was something beyond the physical curb-appeal of modern contemporary design that, from the outside, you couldn’t quite put your finger on—and we knew there had to be more to the two-stories. We strive to unearth residential jewels throughout our Southern California region and the creative people behind them, and in this case the archaeological find behind this one was the multi-discipline firm of DIGBAR interiors & architecture. Brian Reiff, partner and architect, leads us through what we know now as the Kenyon Residence, a home thoughtfully designed and built to bring peace and harmony to multiple generations of family. Jan Horn: The design of the Kenyon Residence incorporates an ancient Hindu design philosophy called Vastu. Please tell us more about that. Brian Reiff: Vastu is an ancient design code that helps create living environments that are harmonious with nature and thus more peaceful. The system, which was derived from a mythological story of the Hindu deities, enables the flow of positive energy by integrating the five natural elements (air, water, fire, earth and ether, or “space”) into properties, buildings and interior spaces. The owners are Indian, and though they are somewhat traditional, they are also highly assimilated. They were very excited by the idea of using these principles in the design as a way to help them remain connected to their heritage. JH: What other unique circumstances were you challenged by in this project? BR: This house was intended to provide a home for four generations of the family, who have experienced various stages of the American immigration process. The oldest generation still live primarily in their homeland and come for extended visits, and the newest generation are being born and raised as completely American. As fascinating as this is, it provides a wide range of tastes and lifestyle preferences to balance. JH: How has the experience of using the design philosophy of Vastu added to or changed the way you think about design? BR: It turns out that Vastu is very compatible with many aspects of living in Southern California. It focuses on bringing daylight and fresh air into homes and organizes activities of our natural daily life cycles into logical and useful ways. Although its basis is founded in ancient mythology, it brings another layer of meaning into living environments, something we strive to infuse into our design craft.
