Marinating the Design

One of our own independent sales associates, Craig Shapiro, has the grand opportunity to showcase a home—a work of art, really—and to unearth its next treasured owner. It was Craig who brought to my attention the stately residence at 818 Roxbury and the architect behind the blueprint-of-a-canvas, Leonardo Umansky and his firm Arxis Design Studio. The home was lovingly designed and built by one generation for another, a son for his parents. It intimately creates a personal space for the parents as empty-nesters and their coveted collection of art. As goes Leonardo’s personal approach with his family, so goes his approach with all of his clients. And similarly, as with all good chefs, he has a “secret sauce” to his success, with his designs and client rapport...good ingredients of design and the time in which to “marinate” them. Jan Horn: The home you designed for your parents at 818 Roxbury has received much attention since it has come on the market. How much of a challenge was it designing for them? Leonardo Umansky: It wasn’t very difficult at all; having grown up with them, I knew exactly what they wanted and what they liked. Very second-nature to me. Intimately, I knew that art was a big part of their lives, and that was incorporated into the design. The interactive process between my parents and me was not an issue, it was pretty easy! JH: Would you share some of the design decisions and elements that evolved during the building of your parents’ home at 818 Roxbury? LU: What my parents asked for originally was a Mediterranean-style house, and what it evolved to was something that would honor and express their love and collection of art. The design was a mix between a Mondrian-inspired grid and the curvilinear lines from one of their favorite sculptures in the collection, a piece by Mexican artist Leonardo Nierman. To meet their desires for flexible space for entertainment and paying homage to their extensive collection, many of our ideas were around creating innovative ways to shed natural light on individual pieces and create special niches to display them. JH: Can you walk us through the beginning stages of the design process, from the moment you meet the client? LU: We approach our projects with the client in mind, first. Philosophically speaking, there is no formula. Each project is looked at as its own and deserves to be. We spend many weeks and months refining the design. We like to say that a design needs to “marinate.” This simply means that the ideas need to seep in and be understood for what they are.
