Designing the Future: A Collaborative Vision for Bryn Mawr
FULL CIRCLE MOMENT
When Julia Murphy ’94 returned to campus this year for her 30th reunion, she reflected on how her formative years at Bryn Mawr set her on the path to becoming a leader in the traditionally male-dominated field of architecture.
As a partner at the prestigious firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) in New York City, Julia has played a pivotal role in shaping some of Manhattan’s most complex architectural projects. Equally as important to Julia is her work to help move the design and real estate industries toward equality for women.
That’s what made Julia an ideal mentor for Lily Kerr ’25, who is one of eight students pursuing independent research this year as part of the prestigious Edith Hamilton Scholars program.
Now in her 13th year at Bryn Mawr, Lily’s interest in architecture began early, inspired by her father’s work as a contractor, which allowed her to gain handson experience in woodworking and construction. As a junior, she deepened this interest through an Impact Project aimed at enhancing the Bryn Mawr campus, sparking a passion for creating thoughtful and purposeful spaces. This year, Lily is dedicating her Edith Hamilton project to designing sustainable and accessible renovations for the Upper School and incorporating outdoor learning areas into the plans.
Together, Julia and Lily are reimagining the Hardy and Howell buildings, aiming to create a more sustainable and functional hub at the center of the Upper School. Lily’s project will be rooted in thorough research, including feedback from students and employees, and her insights are enriched by her deep connection to the Bryn Mawr community. Julia’s extensive experience further shapes the project as she reflects, “Architecture is a blend of the humanities, art, and the science of spatial design. It truly reflects the essence of a Bryn Mawr education.”
As Bryn Mawr envisions the future of its campus, the partnership between Julia and Lily embodies a dynamic blend of passion and expertise that bridges generations. Despite coming from different eras, their shared commitment to architecture and love for Bryn Mawr unite them in a meaningful collaboration.
