Rich Appalachian History

While our mountains are ancient, Swain County is also rich in environmental, cultural, and social history. Visit four museums in downtown Bryson City to learn more about the stories of the past.

SWAIN COUNTY HERITAGE MUSEUM

Located in the historic courthouse, the Swain County Heritage Museum tells the story of Swain County and its people. Through photos, exhibits and a video, you will learn about the life of early settlers; and how the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Fontana Dam rewrote the landscape and changed lives. Try the scavenger hunt for a great family learning experience. Admission is free.

APPALACHIAN RIVERS AQUARIUM

The Appalachian Rivers Aquarium is located on the banks of the Tuckasegee. Exhibits show regional species of fish including bluegill, rock bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, and yellow perch. Two terrariums and a hellbender exhibit showcase the variety of amphibians and reptiles in the Southern Appalachians, currently including frogs, turtles, and several species of salamanders. Admission is free.

FLY FISHING MUSEUM OF THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS

Explore the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians. Through exhibits and videos, visitors will learn about legendary “stream blazers,” the evolution of rods and reels, basic knots, flytying, types of gear, types of gamefish, regional fishing waters and the history of fly fishing in the region. The museum is popular with both veteran fishermen and beginners. Free Admission.

THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS TRAIN MUSEUM

The Smoky Mountains Train Museum is located at The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. It offers a collection of 7,000 Lionel™ engines, cars and accessories, impressive operating layouts, a children’s activity center and a toy/gift shop.
