EXPLORING THE NEW NORMAL
CHRIS ANDERSON
THE NEW NORMAL This studio project started with the exploration of “What is the New Normal?” One of the biggest area’s affected by the COVID-19 was travel. Longing for a time of spontaneous trips and exciting new adventures, I decided to start exploring what the future of travel could look like. I started to reflect on my travels both nationally and internationally. What were some cities doing better than others? What did I miss most about my travels? How can travel be a more enjoyable experience for everyone? Ultimately I wanted to look at how to make travel feel easier, more personable, and fun for everyone. Understanding it is not always about the destination but also the journey. Looking at outstanding travel experiences that keep people coming back. Getting to spend time abroad highlighted how much easier it is to travel outside of the US. With Singapore’s incredible sustainable design and Japan’s efficient high speed rails I was drawn to reimagine travel experiences.
A BETTER WAY TO TRAVEL The way we travel must change. Current travel in America is unsustainable, unreliable, and inefficient. Our roads road are too congested filled with distracted and dangerous drivers and our airplanes are unhealthy and unsustainable. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic domestic flight travel has dropped drastically, opening the door for a new sustainable, safe, and reliable form of travel - high speed rails. People are looking for an escape now more than ever. The adoption of high speed rails in the U.S. would allow for an easier, more reliable, and healthier way to travel. In order to excite people about the future of high speed trains the design must focus around creating a unique, exciting, and fun experience for travelers that allows for concentration, socialization, and relaxation.
HOLISTIC DESIGN
CHANGI A
Looking at holistic design I researched what trends of travel we are seeing and there is a huge need for holisitc design. People want a stronger connection with nature. It not only looks better, but it makes people feel better too. How can travel be more than just the window seat?

FUTURE IN MEDIA I also looked at the way future of travel is presented in media with sleek designs and incredible views. I also looked at the film Snow Piercer in which life on earth was reduced to a single never ending train ride. How can travel be more than just a seat? What experiences could begin to happen during the ride?
HAPPENING NOW: FLORIDA BRIG Convenience meets comfort Brightline is actively constructing a new rail line to bring passengers from our Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach stops to Orlando. Their team is hard at work to continue our excited expansion plans. Service connecting South Florida to Central Florida is expected to open in 2022.
More than train service, Brightline is part of a real estate vision to reenergize static neighborhoods with transportation hubs including modern stations. Brightline’s new South Terminal at the Orlando International Airport (MCO) is a part of the company’s Phase 2 expansion into Central Florida including a Tampa extension.

HAPPENING NOW: TEXAS RAIL LI CONNECTING COMMUNITIES Texas Central is the company undertaking the development, design, construction, finance, and operation of the innovative new high-speed passenger train line that will connect the fourth and fifth largest economies in the country, North Texas and Greater Houston, in less than 90 minutes, with one stop in the Brazos Valley.
High-speed trains provide a better way to travel the Lone Star State by removing the many pain points of driving and flying. From flexible booking options and seamless interchanges to frictionless security, wide aisles, comfortable seating, fast WIFI and food and beverage service, high-speed trains provide an anxiety-free travel experience for families, business travelers, students, tourists and anyone else traveling between North Texas, the Brazos Valley and Houston.

THE MISSION I wanted this travel experience to be fun, versatile, comfortable, and exciting for users. People want to be in control with how they travel without having to pay extra. The added costs to pick seats just to avoid the risk of the dreaded middle seat are the ways of the past.
Understanding that not everyone travels the same way, this ride is designed to have a more personal experience for travelers. Travel needs to be more than just sardines in a can. There needs to be variety and personality to travel without the added costs to feel valued and thought of.
THE JOURNEY I want to design a travel experience that is more than just a ride from A to B. By using current high speed rail projects like the Florida Brightline and The Texas Central rail line as precedents, I want to bring the excitement and efficiency of high speed rails to the Midwest. As projects like this have started to spread across the US, the need for better transportation is here. With proven technology, high speed rails are a more sustainable, reliable and safer way to travel. The train I decided to use is a re-imagined Shinkansen (ShinKen-Sen) or Bullet Train. Shinkansen’s are a high speed train that is commonly used in Japan and is the same model of train that is being used in the Texas Central project. With this train, passengers will travel the Midwest faster than ever before. Using Columbus as a reference, passengers could travel though Ohio an hour or get to Chicago in three.

CAR 1 - Introduction When first entering the train you are met with the “Introduction” experience which is a where each passenger will enter and have a change to receive complimentary refreshments. This car gives hits of whats to come with pops of color. The gold floor detail helps lead users throughout the train. This is the start of our experience which hits at what is meant to come. Bags will be collected here by staff and offers users a chance to catch their breath before heading on to their seat.

CAR 2 - EXPOSITION The first user experience is “concentration” which focuses around making spaces for people to concentrate. This is the “set up” of our plot. The single and pods take influence from a typical train cabin and offers a place for passengers to focus. The seats are angled to enhance the framing of the views and turns passengers away from the distraction of other passengers passing by. The blue tones offer a calming experience and the plush velvet seats offer a comfortable space for users to sit. This is seen throughout the trains.

CAR 3 - RISING ACTION Car 3 starts the socialization experience. The walls start to come down, while the seating is still reminiscent of what can be expected on a train. While anyone can enjoy this car, it caters more specifically for groups of 2-4. As part 2 focuses around socialization, this car is for seeing and hearing more of the passengers around you. The energy starts to build as you can really feel other around you. The pink colors and soft fabrics create an energetic yet peaceful experience for riders. The arches help frame and emphasize the views in this car.

CAR 4 - TURNING POINT As the “action” rises, car 4 is the real turning point. With no walls, this is an experience where user really feel the energy rising. This socialization experience allows for users to not only enjoy the company of each other, but the passengers with them as well. The seating is more open and allows for conversation to happen not just with the user and their party but with the people around them as well. The chairs opposite of the booths can turn. Allowing passengers to engage with more people around them.

CAR 5 - CLIMAX Car 5 is the climax of the experience. This car has no walls and mostly standing “seats”. The yellows create a bright and lively experience With no privacy this car is entire about being with the other passengers. The center bar serves drinks and light snacks for the passengers and acts as the central meeting point or “watering hole” of the train. The gold accents help tie in the art deco influences and reflects the light nicely through the car. While passengers can choose to spend their entire journey in this car, it is more intended for faster engagements.

CAR 6 - FALLING ACTION The last car in the sequence is all about relaxation. With seats directly facing the windows, users are engaged in the entirety of the trip. The deep purples create a calming yet regal experience for the passengers. The dividers between the seats help give passengers some privacy without isolating them. This car is intended for users who will be on the train the longest. They are close to the bar for refreshments and even have their own bathroom. It gives the feeling of first class without having to pay for it.
