Unlike our clients that live in suburbia, xury nor do they have the capacity to add or , how could we as designers make the urban As families grow, they are usually forced out on is to allow the metropolitan home to grow project acheives that goal by implementing a user to have an ever-changing environment.
At the start of the pandemic, we saw the home transform into an array of different spaces housing everyday activities such as the office, gym, school and more. While it’s not uncommon for homeowners in suburbia to be able to add or modify their spaces, urban dwellers do not have the luxury to do so. Even in a post-pandemic world, families should have the opportunity to allow their space to grow with them, rather than growing out of them...

As rules, regulations and people are constantly changing overtime, our environment in which we dwell must be able to accomodate for these changes. By implimenting a sleek and sophisticated interior that has the ability to be modified to the users needs, our homes can evolve with us and create a longevity of space.
Looking to the infamous Swiss Army Knife for inspiration, the design intent of concealing an abundance of functions and slowly revealing them one by one is something that this design will embody moving forward. Designed in 1886, Victorinox used the guiding principal, “Good design is when shape, function and ergonomics blend seamlessly together”. Having a utilitarian object that is sleek and sophisticated from the outside but houses many tools is a clever invention, so why can’t the home be beautiful and house an abundance of functions as well?

CONCEPT: MULTIFUNCTIONAL, MODULAR WALL SYSTEM.
This design explores the concept of having a multifunctional wall system that is built in increments of two feet so that it can be outfitted to any interior space. By applying a textured material to the face of the wall system, it creates interest while also concealing the seams of the typical millwork items inside. For this study, reeded bamboo was used as the surface material as it is economical and environmentally friendly.

Although these wall systems are meant to fit any home, the Brunswick Commerce Lofts provided an ideal space to delpoy them. The industrial nature of the space allows for flexibility of the wall systems, giving tenants the option to customize them to their needs. By dividing each floor into multiple units, you obtain the cost of a smaller price per square foot while also being able to access all of the amentities that a suburban household can accomodate.
