The art of paper cutting (jiǎnzhı̌ ) in China may date back to the second century CE since Cai Lun invented paper in the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. As paper became more affordable, pap cutting became one of the most important types of Chinese folk art. Later, this art form spread to other parts of the world, with different regions adopting their cultural styles. Because the cutouts are often used to decorate doors and windows, they are sometimes referred to as chuāng huā ( ), window flowers or window papercuts. People glued the papercuts to the exterior of window so the light from the inside would shine through the negative space of the cutout area.

The institution, which was designed for the china academy of art, is committed to conserving, revitalizing, and regenerating the country’s arts and crafts, playing a central role in education. The building’s form relates to the region’s geological terrain. It seeks not to intrude on the surrounding green environment. in an attempt to merge the structure with the landscape, the design is topped with discarded roof tiles the museum the appearance of a small local village. The tiles are also used across the structure’s façades, held in place with stainless steel wire. These elevations help control external views, creating a dramatic internal play of light and shadow.
