Building and Environment, Vol. 155

"While some elements of the built environment may include components that are beneficial to the occupant's physical and cognitive functioning, rarely is the built environment intentionally designed or operated with the goal of improving health and wellbeing"

program:

LIGHT + MOVEMENT

this intervention encourages full-body movement using light, color and form. through dynamic lighting and materiality, the environment becomes a motion-based playscape from floor to ceiling. motion sensed colored lighting emitting soothing shades of indigo, violet and fuchsia moves with the user on their journey through. undulating mesh surfaces hollowed out by organic forms encourage various levels of movement through the space such as walking, ducking, weaving, etc. by intervening a major interior circulation path to the parking garage, this installation aims to foster physical activity and active living by creating and enhancing opportunities for movement in function-based environments.

program: SOUND + LIGHT

this intervention aims to improve health and wellness of its occupants through the intersection of sound and light. by placing the installation in an outdoor location to capture a substantial amount of sunlight throughout the day, the light will then be manipulated and reflected to provide the user with an ever-changing visual experience. as the user pauses or passes through the environment, spatial audio creates an otherworldly soundscape within an urban environment through scenes of nature and water. by intervening within an exterior circulation path, the installation aims to provide an interiorized outdoor environment that ultimately aims to improve mood and productivity.

program:

MOVEMENT + SOUND

this intervention encourages movement using sound as a medium. vibrations through vibroacoustic technology and ultralow frequencies through auditory beat stimulation follow the human body as it inhabits and moves through the dimensional soundscape, creating a dynamic and immersive audio-based journey. sound and movement largely impact our mental and physical wellbeing. these sinusoidal frequencies are known to relax muscles, relieve minor aches and pains, and improve circulation. by intervening within a stairwell, users are simultaneously encouraged to take the stairs, promoting physical activity to ensure that movement opportunities are integrated within a function-driven interior.
