Primary and Secondary Swimming Galas 4 Won 4
Term summary from the Director of Sport Wow! Another incredible term for Sport & Physical Education at BSAK. The only problem is where to start for my highlights and review of the action! One of our biggest events and annual achievements is the BSAK 7s. This term, we hosted both rugby and netball in the first term with the tournament now embedded as one of the highlights of the UAE schools' sporting calendar. Our rugby teams competed in various Dubai and Abu Dhabi tournaments and are still the only school in the capital to run a competitive and contact rugby programme all year round. Our U19 boys and girls teams proved themselves at the Dubai 7s, both coming in the top 4 in the UAE, losing narrowly in two heartbreaking semi-finals. A strong relationship with the core rugby schools in Dubai has allowed our rugby teams to keep progressing. BSME U15 managed the astonishing and unprecedented feat of retaining the overall title for a third year running making BSME history. No other school has achieved this feat since the creation of the BSME organisation. After a difficult day one, the team came back strongly with a first placed finish in Athletics, Boys Football and top three finish in Netball to secure the silverware. Our aquatics programme continued its dominance, winning every gala on offer at both Primary and Secondary level with some superb individual and relay performances to secure the ADISSA position as the number one school for swimming. Our netball programme performed extremely well with the U16 team winning both the league and the tournament and all our teams producing some strong performances to finish in the top 3 of each league. The football programme continued dominating the ADISSA competition, winning the majority of leagues and tournaments across the city with the stand out performances coming from the U14 team being crowned triple champions. The teams also committed to the Du Football championships, getting 3 teams into the national semi-finals after the Christmas holidays. Next term sees us off to a fast and furious start with the ADISSA Primary games and BSME Netball taking place alongside all of our local and Dubai based league competitions. I am particularly looking forward to the World Student Games this year, a new addition to the sporting calendar.
Johnny Coombs, Director of Sport
PRIMARY SWIM SQUAD Term 1 Report from Mrs Bowery Head of Aquatics Term 1 has been a huge success for the Primary Swim and Development squad with fabulous progress made by all swimmers. The focus this term has been on working extremely hard in training to perfect stroke technique and develop a high level of cardiovascular fitness. A strong work ethic has been fostered and it is lovely to see the swimmers gel together as a cohesive squad. At Galas, they have shown such willingness to help one another - cheering on the team and supporting one another. It has been a delight to witness. In total, 49 students have represented BSAK in competitive galas. BSAK has dominated the A League, finishing 1st in both Gala meets at BISAD and BSAK. For many of the Year 3 swimmers, these galas were their first competitive competitions and they handled what could be a daunting occasion brilliantly. So many students swam personal bests and this is the result of their dedication and focus in training sessions. They have been outstanding and they really have been a pleasure to coach. Looking ahead to next term the focus will be on building on the excellent start to the season with additional swim clinics for starts, turns and relays. The coaching team, Mary, Alvin, Marko and Mane, have dedicated so much time and energy to delivering exciting and varied sessions and for that, the whole squad says thank you. We look forward to seeing what we can achieve together next term!

SECONDARY SWIM SQUAD Term 1 Report from Mrs Bowery Head of aquatics The BSAK Secondary Swim squad has had a really successful term. New Students have been welcomed into the squad and these swimmers have settled very well. Together, the team has shown great determination and a real drive to succeed. 46 Secondary Students have swum for BSAK in Galas. It has been delightful to see the older Students helping those younger and sharing tips and tactics to help them in a competitive scenario. The sheer quality of BSAK swimming on show in the ADISSA League A Galas has been outstanding and BSAK has dominated, winning both Galas by a significant distance. At times this term, the team has been beset with injury and illness, and the squad has at these times, come into its own. When needed, swimmers took on events out of their comfort zone for the good of the squad. The teamwork ethic was very strong. In addition to this, many students have secured personal bests in practise and competition; This is something to be hugely proud of. Next term will bring new challenges for all swimmers to push forward and commit to maintaining the high standards and re-evaluate their goals set in September. The team's successes do not happen without the coaches so a big thank you to Mary, Alvin, Marko and Mane for their time and effort this term. The students have benefited greatly from their expertise and experience.

U9 Girls A and B Football teams
It has been the most amazing season for the U9 Girls as they were crowned League champions and won the End of Season tournament. The success of our season is down to the amazing effort shown by all players in training and matches. They played in a very competitive league and had many tough games along the way. Over the season the players have shown huge levels of determination, grit and will to win no matter what! Highlights have included a hat-trick by Noya in the last group game of the End of Season tournament, followed by 2 goals in the semi-final and the winner in the final. Many of the League games were won by a score of 1-0 showing how strong the team were mentally and how they could grind out victories.

U11 Girls A and B Football teams
The U11 Girls have made huge progress this season. With 20 girls attending training every week, there has been great competition for places in the A squad. The players have worked really hard at training to improve their control of the ball and passing, they have also developed an understanding of 7-a-side formation, positions and game related tactics. With both A and B team fixtures taking place during the season, all players have had the opportunity to represent BSAK and experience competitive football. Congratulations to all the players for a very successful season. U12 Football teams
The U12 A Team have had a very successful season. Unbeaten throughout their league fixtures they won the on-island league. This was closely followed by a very convincing win against Al Yasmina to win the overall ADISSA U12 A league. The U12 Team have qualified through the first stages of the UAE Du Tournament winning all their qualifying games on the way. "This team plays some great attacking football and have often shown maturity beyond their age when passing the ball around the field to open up defenses." Mr Edgar, U12A coach
This term the U12B team has grown both as individuals and as a collective unit. Training sessions have been productive and as a result, they have had some fantastic performances on the pitch. They won the majority of their games and when they were heavily defeated in the last game they turned it into a positive for reflection and to emphasise the team ethos. "The U12B team have worked so hard during training and it has been a pleasure to watch them play their compeitive games. Win, lose or draw this group of boys are always passionate about football." The U14A squad have played some fantastic football this season, moving the ball well and scoring lots of goals. They won the on island league in convincing fashion and went on to win the on/off island playoff here at BSAK. Enjoying some hard fought games, the team reached the final of the ADISSA End of Season Tournament where we beat Al Yasmina to take the trophy.
'It's been a pleasure coaching the boys and watching them outplay some very good teams.' Mr Collings
The U14B league was very competitive with many schools fielding strong sides. The team were unbeaten in the league and showed great resilience playing one game with only 8 players due to injury. The End of Season Tournament was held at BSAK. The tough semi-final was a draw until the final seconds and a header into the goal avoided penalties. The team went on to win the final The large crowd of BSAK supporters celebrated a memorable double with delight.
“The success this season was due to the strength and depth of the squad. All 12 players featured regularly, making timely contributions throughout the campaign. The boys were a real pleasure to coach and work with.“ Mr Payne U14A and B Boys League position - Champions

Boys Football
U16 Football teams
The under 16 football team have had another great season. In every game, they displayed a positive attitude and a great style of football. Their natural game is 11-a-side however at the End of Season tournament, they played on smaller pitches and 7-a-side. This was a test for the boys as they had to adapt their usual style of play. However, they all put in great performances and made it to the final. The final was very competitive with the boys just falling short at the final hurdle.
U18 Football teams
The squad has been nothing short of exceptional this term. Their attitude at training has been first class and this has transferred onto the field of play. The squad were desperately unlucky not to retain the league as they finished 2nd trailing by a single point. The squad bounced back from this disappointment in spectacular style, dominating the End of Season Tournament with thier high pressure and attacking brand of football. They thoroughly derseved to win and lift the cup!
"I always remind the boys, be phenomenal or be forgotten and small steps climb moutains! These boys will not be forgetten and will undoubtedly reach new heights next year." Mr Sewill U16 Boys On/Off Island - Champions End of Season Tournament Runners-up

U9 touch Rugby
rugby
This season has been a massive success for the development of the Under 9 age group. Training has worked on a variety of skills that will not only aid in the players touch rugby but also help them moving up to, and understanding the fundamentals, of the contact game. In the ADISSA league, both the A & B teams have shown real progression throughout the season and it culminated with the A's reaching the semi-final after a great fixture and the B's were crowd champions of the cup.
“Watching the boys have fun and develop a love of rugby is what it is all about at this age. The squad have worked really hard at training and have had great results in the tournaments." Mr Thomas
U11 Touch Rugby
The Under 11s have shown fantastic progress this year. Training has focused on developing fundamental skills with a growing awareness and understanding of the full game. Quick Rip has been used as a way of looking at lines of running, support play and offloading which has no doubt made them better players. As the team is introduced to contact, the priority remains technique and safety so they can enjoy the game of rugby with confidence in future years.
The tournament at JESS really showcased the team’s ability and skill level as they were by far the best rugby side at the full contact tournament.

Rugby games in Dubai
rugby
BSAK Rugby teams were invited to a floodlit tournament at Dubai English Speaking College and JESS. One week in November the teams travelled to Dubai to take part. BSAK is the only school in Abu Dhabi that has regular fixtures against Dubai schools.
U12 Rugby 7s
The U12 Rugby team competed in a range of tournaments including the BSAK 7s, the JESS Floodlight tournament and at Dubai College and Dubai English Speaking College. They trained weekly on Thursday afternoons. The squad was made up of both Years 6 and 7 Students and they are a highly talented group, with a number of superb athletes, who came together to make an excellent team. The boys competed strongly against all Dubai teams and this is a testimony to the determined nature of the team. Highlights of the term include a memorable win over a touring Millfield School team and the very competitive games against Dubai College and DESC. “The Millfield game was played at lunchtime on the main pitch and with a crowd cheering of Students and Teachers, the atmosphere was electric. The boys kept their cool and played some of their best rugby. It was a proud moment for BSAK to test their rugby skills against a school with a respected rugby pedigree. Mr Coombs

50th anniversary teams At the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens BSAK entered an Old Boys rugby and Old Girls netball teams. Running on to the pitch and courts, the former students and teachers, were there to celebrate the 50th Anniversary. Being their first year in the International social competition, the Old boys faced a challenging group. A win and two losses in the group matches meant that they entered the bowl competition and eventually lost in the final to a strong side from Australia. The alumni involved left BSAK from 2011-2018 but quickly formed a strong bond on and off the field and played an exciting brand of 7's. Each player was genuinely excited to represent BSAK again and this certainly bodes well for future years. The Old girls faced strong international competition in every match and played with determination and resilience. They were the first BSAK netball team to enter the Dubai 7s and a new tradition has begun.
U19 boys 7s rugby Some years, the rugby squads start the year with very few players from the previous year as boys have left after A Levels. This year was one of those years, just one player remained from the victorious 2017 Dubai 7s U19 Gulf Boys team. With a new and younger team, the start of the rugby season was a leap of faith. However from the outset, the team quickly established a real bond, had a determined approach to training and at the end, delivered a sensational display at the flagship Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens tournament The training programme and game schedule was all about challenging the boys out of their comfort zone, both mentally and physically. At the DESC tournament and BSAK 7s the boys put on a strong performance. The biggest eye-opener for the fledgeling side was running against both the Abu Dhabi Harlequins 1st 7s and an invitational Sparaza side which boasted some of the best 7s players in the world.
With all this exposure, the BSAK wolf pack went into the Dubai 7s with a subtle swagger about their play and they did not disappoint. Some strong, controlled and ruthless performances took the team to a semi-final, against a very physical Dubai College 2s. Unfortunately, the side came off second but some valuable lessons were learnt and the bond continues to strengthen. After licking their wounds the BSAK wolf pack will inevitability be stronger and ready for the XV season.
“A massive congratulations to the whole squad. Rugby this term has exceeded expectations and all because of the hard work and determination shown by every player. Mr Thomas

U19 boys 7s rugby
U19 girls 7s rugby What a fantastic term of rugby! The young squad came together in September with many girls transitioning from the touch leagues to the world of contact rugby. The continual improvement was clear for all to see as their skill level and understanding of the game increased in every time they trained and played. The whole term was a build up to the annual Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens tournament. This year, the team played more rugby than ever before prior to the Dubai 7s with competitive fixtures against Abu Dhabi French and the BSAK 7s Rugby tournament. At the BSAK 7s, the girls were impressive in the group games and made it through to the finals. They lost to a tough side and showed that they had been on a massive learning trajectory and become a formidable force on the pitch. At the Dubai 7s, the girls once again performed amazingly well in their group games and came through the quarter final to make the semi-final. Although this was the end of their tournament, the team should be so proud of their achievement. Team work, hard work and a love of rugby were the key to this teams success.
“A special mention to the Y13 girls, captain Caitlyn Mason and Elildh Ashton who appeared at their third and final Dubai 7’s in BSAK colours over the National Day weekend. Both have had a massive impact on the growth and development of girls rugby in the school.” Mr Roberts

BSME U15
The BSME squad embarked on a tough training schedule from September, with up to five training sessions per week, in preparation for the gruelling weekend of competition on 15th to 17th November. The competition was hosted by Cranleigh Abu Dhabi. Girls football and boys volleyball were on day one. It was a tough competition and despite playing outstanding football and volleyball both teams finished just outside the medal places. This led to some bitter disappointment. However, with two days of competition remaining the squad committed to the task and displayed unrivalled resilience. Day two was the athletics competition at New York University Abu Dhabi. The quality of athletics from the students was a delight to witness, with many personal bests recorded. Neve Woodward was awarded Athlete of the Day. This comeback on day two meant BSAK moved up on the leaders board. On day three, the netballers and footballers had everything to play for. The competition was fierce and the netballers just lost out in a competitive semi-final, but triumphed in the third/fourth playoff. The boys football was outstanding and they topped their group. Progressing through to the semi-final they faced the British International School of Jeddah in the final. In a brilliant game, BSAK scored the only goal and were victorious. Yiannis Petras was awarded Best Boys Footballer of the day. In the closing ceremony, history was made as the BSAK U15 BSME Squad were crowned champions of the British Schools Middle East for the 3rd time in a row.
“As coaches, we are unbelievably proud of the students and all they have achieved, their hard work and dedication has certainly paid off. Congratulations to the squad and all the coaches. Mrs Bowery

U14 Netball Team
The U12 Netball Squad has had a successful season and developed in skill and tactical knowledge throughout; building in confidence as the season progressed. There were many highlights throughout the season however, the top 4 finish in the BSAK 7s was a real triumph. Playing against several Dubai schools the girls showcased their skills and won most of their games. The whole squad has had many opportunities to play fixtures and have thrived in competition; playing some excellent netball in some close matches. The commitment and dedication from the squad has been excellent and this has been a real contribution to their success.
The U14 girls have had a great season. With over 40 girls attending the trials at the beginning of the term, there has been great competition for places and positions within the A and B teams. The U14A's made great progress, particularly in developing their movement and tactical awareness. It was a very close competition in the ADISSA U14A League with BSAK, Brighton and Cranleigh beating all other teams and then going 'goal for goal' against each other, playing a high standard of netball.
“Seeing these young players U12A enjoy their first experience League position - Runners-up of senior netball was a pleasure to watch. I hope U12B they continue to develop End of Season Tournament - Runners-up their skills next year.” Mrs Fern
The U14 B team performed extremely well and have shown fantastic teamwork this season. They won all their league games to finish B league champions and also won the ADISSA B Tournament. A huge thank you to Mrs Rose for her time and commitment in coaching the team. U14B

Netball
Throughout the season, the Under 16s were extremely coachable. They trained hard and went from strength to strength. Right from the start, the team played their competitive fixtures with some strong defending and great accuracy from the shooters. In the remaining 4 games, the girls even had the opportunity to show their versatility by playing in multiple positions. Their toughest games of the season took place at the BSAK 7s where they were challenged by many of the Dubai schools. This year, there were friendly fixtures for the Under 16B team and Under 16 development squad. Congratulations to all of the girls involved! U19 Netball Team The Under 19s had a great season. The toughest game for the Under 19s was the first of the season and this was the only game they lost in the league. Moving on to the next fixtures the team worked hard on their game, improving their attacking and defensive skills. In the final game of the season, the game went from goal to goal and the 3rd quarter ended in a tie. With a few changes and digging deep, the girls finished with a welldeserved win.

Cricket U14 Cricket team
The U14s showed passion and commitment throughout the season, but perhaps more importantly there was a desire to improve, learn lessons match by match, and take on board the advice and guidance of the coaches. The team was extremely well led by Ishaan Arora (Captain), with his fiercely competitive approach, and ably supported by Roshan Ganithi, whose enthusiasm with the bat and in the field was inspirational. The fast bowling of Ayan Mohideen was at times unplayable and even the best batsmen Cranleigh could offer were simply not up to the task. Ayan was ably supported by Hashim Raja who proved to be a big occasion performer. In the spinning department, BSAK was fortunate to have two exceptional and consistent performers with a great deal of variety in their armoury Ali Khan and Armaghan Abdullah. The innings regularly got off to a great start through the big hitting of Arnav Gandhi, supported by the finesses and stroke play of 2 U12s who stepped up with great success - George Moorhouse and Viraj Soboyaji.
‘The boys have been outstanding the whole season, even in our very narrow defeat in the play-off final; and I would like to thank my coaching team, Mr Khan and Mr Church, for their hard work and the parents for their fantastic support’. Mr Choudhury
Fielding was consistently at a high standard and the boys learned a great deal about the importance of keeping to a game plan and backing up their teammates. U14 Cricket League position - Runners-up
