Inpatient Pavilion Lakeland Healthcare St. Joseph, Michigan
This new 140-bed patient tower uses evidence-based design and community-inspired design to create a healing facility focused on supporting Lakeland Healthcare goals. A unique series of visioning sessions inspired the design parameters for the project from its infancy. A diverse group of 60-80 residents, project stakeholders and local service club members were brought together to collaboratively determine what was of most importance to the community. The prominent river, dunes, orchard and vineyard themes found throughout the building evolved from the desire to integrate with the natural environment surrounding Lakeland Healthcare.
community-inspired design Continuing the collaborative approach through the entire design and construction process, a full-scale mock patient room was created and toured by over 2,000 people for testing and refinement prior to construction. Feedback was vital to driving the final patient rooms seen today in the Inpatient Pavilion, including the pinwheel layout of the nursing unit to maximize vistas of the surrounding Lake Michigan landscape. The new Inpatient Pavilion has been designated as a Pebble Project by the Center for Health Design. Pebble projects are facilities specifically designed to improve the quality of patient care, attract more patients, improve staff retention and enhance operational efficiency and productivity through its design.
"As a result of the community's visioning sessions, the design team really hit a home run. The unique approach to design through the community's involvement has proven to truly capture what is most relevant to us." Joe Wasserman President and CEO, Lakeland Healthcare

improving outcomes with design The 140-bed Inpatient Pavilion uses evidence-based design focused on supporting Lakeland Healthcare goals. Through in-depth exploration of the facility, its operations, user satisfaction and research – 77 evidencebased design metrics were applied to determine scope, site, patient room and patient unit configuration. Measurable improvements in the nursing units were later documented in post-occupancy studies. The results focus on impact on functionality, patient-centered care, healing environment and cultural responsiveness to surroundings.
