July 2014 has been an extremely successful month in our hometown-Butte, Montana. The success and beauty came in many forms and from many groups. The Butte Exchange Club hosted the Field of Honor on July 3-6, to honor and respect our heroes. This magnificent setting of hundreds of flags against the Belmont Mine Headframe and brilliant blue sky was breathtaking and emotional. Butte Exchange Club, you hit this one out of the ballpark. The Kenneally Family and their Town Pump organization provided funding for another spectacular fireworks display on the big “M”. People from all over the state and country are in Butte for this event. This year’s display has outdone all previous years and next year will even be better. Not only did the Kenneally Family provide us with this great display, but they provided the funding for it to be televised so all shut-ins would be able to be part of this memorable event. Butte Community Celebrations organized an excellent 4th of July parade. What even made this year’s parade even better than ever was the committee publically issuing a financial report with total transparency. Thank you Butte Community Celebrations for a job well done. The Montana Folk Festival had another banner year. From all accounts of the people I have talked to, they stated it was a huge crowd with great entertainers and a good time was had by all. What more could you ask for? Evel Knievel Days was successful from all reports. The committee worked hard to ensure the festival would be a success and all indicators seem to show that they succeeded in their mission. Congratulations and best wishes for next year.

Any one of these events would be a gigantic undertaking in any other community, but in our hometown, Butte, Montana, it is just a way of life. I am so proud of all of the above businesses, families, individuals and groups. I am so lucky to call Butte my hometown and I am proud of it. Sincerely,

Executive Director

Is it Time to Take Your Small Business Online? Your customers are already talking about you online – a website helps you to control the conversation! As a business owner, you likely know that just because something is cheap and easy to do doesn’t mean that it’s a necessity for your company! But the importance of taking your small business online goes far deeper. Many small businesses opt out of website creation because they fail to see how the time and resources needed to maintain a web presence can fit into their already-packed “to do” lists and cash-strapped budgets. Unfortunately, this is shortsighted. Even if you haven’t invested in the creation of a small business website, you still have a web presence – but it’s your customers that are controlling the conversation. Today, consumer interactions don’t occur in a bubble. If a customer is frustrated, he doesn’t just tell his close friends – he tells the entire world through review websites and social media networks. If your company isn’t there to either refute claims or make amends, this feedback – whether positive or negative – is the only thing future customers will find when they look for your business using search engines like Google or Bing. Obviously, simply having a website won’t prevent your business from receiving negative reviews or critical feedback online. But by being a part of the conversation, you demonstrate that your business is committed to its customers, preventing your company from losing clients that might otherwise go to your competitors on the basis of your minimal web presence.

It’s been 108 years since a Butte tradition was founded on Park Street in Uptown Butte and it’s still there. Wein’s Men’s Store is a specialty men’s retailer that caters to men who want better fashion, better quality and better service at prices that are less than you might expect. Wein’s sells men’s suits in many price ranges —both off the rack and custom made, as well as dress shirts, shoes, casual wear and furnishings in nearly every size imaginable. They also rent and sell wedding attire including, but not limited to, tuxedos, vests as well as more casual looks in pants and shirts. Also look to Wein’s at prom time for the latest and largest selection of formalwear anywhere at most competitive prices. In the ever-changing world of internet, Wein’s Men’s Store encourages you to click around, show them what you like then place the order with them because they can make sure the right models and sizes are ordered and that the price paid will be equal to or often less than what is found online. There are no miracles out there—“buy one suit/sport coat/tuxedo, get two free” and similar promotions can always be matched or bettered by Wein’s. Another category that Wein’s specializes in is custom screen printing and custom embroidery. Don’t hesitate to have your business or organization to call for a quote. Wein’s Men’s Store, a Chamber member since the Chamber began, extends an invitation to stop in (open 10 to 5:30 daily except Sundays and Holidays) at 66 West Park Street and let haberdasher Joel Broudy help you with your clothing and shoe needs. Phone calls (406/782/1208 or 800/982/1208) are always welcome and you can always visit on the net at www.weinsonline.com

A majority of our operational costs for our six programs must be funded through resources generated by the Digger Athletic Association. The costs of team travel, recruiting, equipment, academic support and facilities have increased significantly over the past several years and we anticipate those costs will continue to rise. This results in a tremendous need for community giving, and the DAA individual and Corporate Memberships are our most important assets in this effort.

INTRODUCING THE NEWEST OREDIGGER On April 30, 2014, Dave Lau was named Director of Athletics for Montana Tech. Lau oversees the athletic department and Digger Athletic Association. Lau comes to Butte from Missouri Western State University. In 1999, Lau arrived at MWSU as an assistant baseball coach and administrator. In 2003, he made the switch to fulltime administrator as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Development. In his 15 years at Western, Lau established himself as one of the most successful development officers in the MIAA and NCAA Division II, raising more than $600,000 annually. In 2003, Lau created the Missouri Western Celebrity Golf Classic. This golf tournament, now in its 12th year, has raised more than $650,000 to help support Missouri Western Athletics and the YWCA Shelter for Abused and Homeless Women and Children. A native of St. Joseph, MO., Lau is a 1989 graduate of Missouri Western, where he played three years of baseball for the Griffons. After his junior season in 1986, he signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets. He spent three seasons with the Mets before returning to St. Joseph to complete his undergraduate degree at MWSU. Lau was inducted into the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. Dave and his beautiful wife Kendra are excited to be part of the Butte community.

The Digger Pledge With loyal support from the Digger Nation, the Digger Athletic Association (DAA) helps Montana Tech athletic programs provide a first-class experience to over 180 student-athletes in six varsity sports each year, while contributing to the competitive advantage of Digger teams and coaches. In order to enhance this first-class experience and competitive advantage, the Digger Athletic Association strives to build and maintain relationships with Diggers in the community, region and across the country. As a supporter of the DAA, members join hundreds of other Diggers to collectively contribute to excellence at Montana Tech. Your support is used to provide funding for academic success, sports medicine, equipment and travel which are the key components of a great student-athlete experience.
