The aircraft was considered a total loss and written of in 2008. It was then acquired by the MSP Fire Department to be used as a fire training aircraft. To this day, it can be seen directly across from the aircraft viewing area at MSP. The photo above was taken on September 5, 2016 by Blake Wenthe.

How to Distinguish Between Similar Aircraft

A common challenge for beginning planespotters is identifying different members of the same aircraft family and telling similarly-sized aircraft models apart. This is by no means a comprehensive list of the differences between aircraft, but a simple, jargon-free (as much as possible) guide.

Boeing 737 • Since the 737-300 and 737-700 are nearly identical, Southwest paints their flap fairings (objects underneath the wings) orange on the -700. • Boeing 737-700—one overwing exit • Boeing 737-800—two overwing exits, longer than -700 • Boeing 737-900—two overwing exits, longer than -800, some have an additional exit aft of (behind) the wing Boeing 757 The -300 is longer than the -200. Boeing 767 The -400 is longer than the -300, which is longer than the -200. Boeing 737 vs. Airbus A320 Family The 737 has a slope that leads to the tail, while the A320 does not. The rear cockpit window shape is more square-shaped on an A320, while it’s more diamond-shaped on the 737. The A320 has a rounder nose, compared to the 737’s pointier nose. Airbus A319/320/321 • A319—one overwing exit • A320—two overwing exits • A321—four evenly-spaced exits Airbus A330 The -300 is longer than the -200.

41

Airbus A340 The -600 is longer than the -300 MD-82/-83 vs. MD-88 vs. MD-90 vs. Boeing 717 • American operates MD-82/-83 • Delta operates MD-88/-90/B717 • The MD-90 has larger engines than the MD-88 • The 717 is smaller and has an unpainted outline under horizontal stabilizer Bombardier CRJ The -900 is the longest, followed by the -700 and the -200. Embraer E-Jet The 190 is the longest, followed by the 175 and the 170

Future Aircraft at MSP Boeing 737 MAX The 737 MAX launches Spring 2017 with Norwegian Air Shuttle. MAX models will be MAX 7, MAX 8, MAX 9, and MAX 10. American, United, Alaska, and Southwest have all ordered MAX variants, which are upgrades to the 737 Next Generation (-700, -800, -900 models). The MAX 10 is a new model meant to compete directly with the Airbus A321neo. Airbus A350-900 Delta has ordered these aircraft to replace the retiring 747-400s for routes to Asia. Perhaps at some point, we’ll have one visit MSP. Bombardier CS100 Delta has ordered up to 125 of this newly-produced jet to replace its MD-88s. The CS100, which seats around 110 passengers, was first delivered to Swiss in 2016. Deliveries to Delta begin in 2018.

42

Spot the Differences Look at the circled areas. Based on the information on page 41, which aircraft is an Airbus A320, and which is a Boeing 737-800?

If you said the top photo is the A320 and the bottom photo is the 737-800, you’re right! Now that you’ve got this down, you can impress your family, friends, and co-workers.
