Promoting Potential Celebrating Achievement Promoting Potential Celebrating Achievement, the launch event for the School of Participation at West Suffolk College, took place in February. [Tuesday 22 February 2011] Students who have successfully completed a programme and gone on to succeed came back to showcase their achievements, and partner organisations and groups from across the College joined the celebration. Activities included junk drumming, a presentation on Synergy students' involvement in woodland conservation with the Green Light Trust, films produced by former students and a live performance by First Diploma Music students. The new School is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Health at the College. It incorporates Synergy programmes (formerly known as E2E Entry to Employment), Prince's Trust provision, Youth East and other ESF (European Social Fund) projects. Sherry Fry, Head of School of Participation, and her staff team have a well-earned reputation for helping young people who have barriers to learning to get into employment, education or training. Sherry said: "We are the only College in Suffolk which is investing in their community by having a School dedicated to working with disengaged young people.

"Our new facilities in Edmund House provide a safe and inspiring environment for young people; a place they can call their own. The College has been incredibly supportive by creating the right environment for us to help young people move forward and become confident, productive members of society with achievable aspirations for the future."

Hospice is named one of the best places to work St Nicholas Hospice Care staff have helped their workplace to be named one of the 100 best places to work in the country. The Hospice is placed at number 60 in The Sunday Times 100 Best Places to work in the Public and Charity Sectors list, based on feedback from a staff survey carried out at the end of last year. Being a 'best place to work' demonstrates a commitment by the Hospice to being the best it can be in every area of the workplace in supporting the day-to-day working lives of its employees. The new Best Companies list, which will be published in the Sunday Times on March 6, has been set up to recognise those public and charitable organisations that have created a truly outstanding place to work. The Best Companies survey identifies workplace performance and best practice according to eight key factors, including: leadership; personal growth; wellbeing; and pay/benefits. Jane Doughty, Personnel Director at the Hospice, said: "As you can

imagine, we are delighted to have received this accolade. "It is lovely for the staff here to have this news, but it is also a fantastic achievement for the Hospice to be ranked in the prestigious Sunday Times 100 Best Places to work in the Public and Charity Sectors list. "This feedback from the Best Companies staff survey is a major vote of confidence from our staff and it confirmed what we already knew - that our staff feel St Nicholas Hospice Care is a great place to work. "We are continually striving to make this a truly rewarding environment in which to work for all our staff and participating in the Sunday Times Best Companies Survey provides us with honest feedback about how we are doing and what we can do to improve further. We would like to thank staff for taking the time to respond to the survey." Jonathan Austin, Chief Executive of Best Companies, said he was delighted the Hospice had won a place in the top 100. "It should be truly proud employees and colleagues recognise it as a 'Best Place to Work'," he said. In addition to winning a coveted spot in The Sunday Times top 100, the Hospice has been awarded one star accreditation by Best Companies. Best Companies accreditation offers a 'Michelin style' star rating system for organisations that demonstrate high levels of employee engagement. Based on staff feedback, organisations receive an index score which determines their star rating compared to a fixed standard - one star is first class, two stars are outstanding and three stars are extraordinary.

Moreton Hall Community Involvement There is a large area of open space to the south of Airfield Road being given over as a community facility. The borough council agreed with my request for every household to be involved in the design and layout, naming and maintenance of the site. I have been to a drop-in session where local residents discussed the proposals with council staff and hopefully we will soon have proposals Cllr Trevor that suit the majority of local people. The concept Beckwith of the local community being involved once completed is great and already people have volunteered to be included. Keen observers of the woodlands, ponds and other open space on Moreton Hall will know that our own conservation group, Woodland Ways, do so much good work already. They are a group of volunteers committed to the preservation and enhancement of the landscape, woodland trees and plants in our local community. They will sure to be an integral part of whatever comes forward for the land in question. On the subject of Woodland Ways, they are 10 years old this years and are always looking for more members, so whether you are interested in tree planting, woodland care, hedge planting, footpath maintenance and edge trimming or just meeting like-minded people, they would love to hear from you. Have a look at their excellent website and you won't be able to resist getting out on a bracing Sunday morning to help! Thankfully, they are also very happy to involve the less active amongst us. Please have a look at http://www.woodlandways.org.uk/ or contact them via information@woodlandways.org.uk Although I mention WW as they are relevant to this piece, we should also remember the host of other clubs and organisations who are so active on Moreton Hall and make it all tick. We had a big society long before they started on about it nationally with the difference being, we know what it means.

Page 7

Vision for Bury 2031 At the same drop-on session, developers were consulting on the future shape of the town by visiting areas for growth like ourselves. I'm trying to curb my natural cynicism but struggling because it's not about what we think (we told them that during the recent local development framework process and they ignored us) as they already know what they intend doing. There is no point in asking "what do you think are the right uses for Moreton Hall" when they've already decided 500 houses is what they will inflict on us. I've raised several concerns about the process with the council and will let you know the response.

Symonds Road HGVs The problem of heavy goods vehicles using Symonds Road still isn't resolved but is being looked at on a couple of fronts. I'm reasonably optimistic we'll have it under control in the near future. Cllr Trevor Beckwith, Moreton Hall

Folklore and Legend at Moyse's Hall

Sunday 20 March on English watch cases.

The mystery of the green children who appeared in medieval Suffolk, attracted by the bells of St Edmunds Abbey, will be re-examined in a lecture at Moyse's Hall at 2pm on Wednesday 9 March. Historian Ron Murrell will tell the story of' The Green Children of Woolpit' and look at the local legend through contemporary and later accounts. This will be followed by a second lecture at 2pm on Wednesday 23 March entitled 'The Green Man.' Explore one of the classic figures of folklore, one with many names and who has been worshipped, feared and reviled. A pagan figure who has made frequent appearances in Christian churches. What does he represent and should be a figure of fun, fear or pity? Each lecture costs £6 adults/£5 concessions and is suitable for adults and over 16's. Booking is essential to ensure a place by contacting Moyse's Hall on 01284 757160.

Philip Priestly, member of the British Horology Institute, will be examining an intriguing selection of watch cases and discussing their makers and the different mechanisms used by these timekeeping items. The talk continues the horology lecture series that accompanies the current 'Keeping Time' exhibition, on display until summer 2011. The pocket watch (or pocketwatch) is made to be carried in a pocket, as opposed to being worn on the wrist. They were the most common type of watch from their introduction in the 16th century until wristwatches became popular after World War I. Pocket watches generally have a chain to allow them to be secured to a waistcoat, lapel, or belt loop, to prevent them from being dropped. The exhibition includes watch cases from the renowned Gershom Parkington collection together with exhibits from St Edmundsbury's own collection, and is one that fans must not miss. The lecture costs £6 adults and £5 concessions which includes refreshment. Booking is essential.

Part of the study will look at district heating. Little used in the UK, but well established in many other western countries, this concept would centralise the heating and hot water supply, removing the need for individual boilers in each new house. This would reduce overall emissions for the area, increase energy affordability and reduce fuel poverty. This study, also led by St Edmundsbury Borough Council and partners, ends in July 2011.

The West Suffolk Athletics Arena at Abbeycroft Leisure's Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre has been chosen to host the Rwandan Olympic and Paralympic teams as they prepare for London 2012. Adam Baker, who is also a member of the St Edmundsbury Olympic Steering Group, said: "Organisations need to start planning now if they, and Suffolk, are to make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity. I hope that everybody, whatever their background, will go away from the workshop with at least one practical thing that they can do to make the most of the Games." The 'Are You Ready for 2012?' workshop takes place on Tuesday 29 March at The Apex, Charter Square, Bury St Edmunds, from 6pm to 7pm.
