Tom Pierce, Director of Sport
A very warm welcome to our last Saturday Sport programme of 2023. On behalf of the whole Sports team, we thank you very much for all you support this term. It has been so great to see how valued Sport is from both parents, pupils and staff at Berkhamsted. This week I addressed a group of students about our school value of Aim High with Integrity and what it actually means. Many of the students didn’t really know what integrity or humility meant. I showed them a video that I had watched on Amazon Prime called “Bye Bye Barry” which focused on an American footballer, Barry Sanders. He was an exceptionally talented player and broke the NFL record for the most metres gained from a running back in a season. However, what was interesting about Barry Sanders, was that every time he scored a touch down, he would hand the ball straight away to the umpire without a big celebration. This is very abnormal in the NFL where you see big celebrations every time you score. This demonstrated that Barry Sanders was able to show integrity and humility, even in the most pressurised environment. Certainly, it also shows that performing at a high level in Sport doesn’t mean you need to be arrogant to make it to the very top. I have seen many examples this term of students aiming high with integrity so I think we are in a good place, but it is always good to not rest on your laurels! On behalf the whole PE/Games team we wish you and your families a very happy xmas and new year.

Head Injuries & Concussion Saturday 22nd April 2023
Concussion is a complex process caused by trauma that transmits force to the brain either directly or indirectly and results in temporary impairment of brain function. Its development and resolution are rapid and spontaneous. Ultimately if you are unsure at any stage if a player has a head injury or is concussed you should seek medical attention. Listed below are some of the possible signs of concussion. Headaches - It is only normal after a blow to the head to suffer a mild headache. There could be some bruising or mild swelling over the scalp which may be tender, but this doesn’t necessarily mean a player has concussion. If the headache seems to be getting worse this could be a cause for concern so seek medical attention. Drowsiness - Means they cannot be roused. It can be common for players to want to sleep for a short time (especially children), and it will be okay to let them do so. If there are further concerns you can wake them a few times during the night, especially if a knock on the head has happened just before bedtime. If, on the other
hand, they are difficult toCricket wake or Boys v St. Paul’s School show signs of confusion, seek medical attention. Other Symptoms - Confusion, unsteadiness, memory loss and convulsiveness. If players show any signs of the above they should seek medical attention. These are merely guidelines as you know your student better than anyone else, but please remember signs and symptoms could take up to 48 hours to develop and should be monitored. Berkhamsted School takes all head injuries seriously and all members of PE staff are First Aid trained and follow the RFU Headcase protocol if a student sustains a head injury. In serious cases students would be referred to a local hospital (listed at the beginning of the programme) as they would with any other serious injury.
