A very warm welcome back to a new year of weekend Sport at Berkhamsted. I hope you and your families enjoyed a restful break. We welcome Highgate School to Berkhamsted today for Football fixtures, plus we are looking forward to both the internal U12 and U13 Rugby training sessions and the Prep School Swimming Championships. Good luck to our Lacrosse teams too who travel to Wycombe for their first fixture back after Christmas and are attending 5 Schools Lacrosse Tournament at Downe House School. Clearly at this time of year we are very much subject to weather in terms of fixtures so please do keep a close eye on our SOCS, website and Instagram pages for updates, postponements and changes in venues and timings. The squad training games for Rugby on Saturday will now take place at Knox Johnston 3G Astro pitch as follows:Year 7 Boys 09:45 - 11:00 Year 8 Boys 10:45 - 12:00

Last term was a hugely positive and successful one from a Sporting perspective. I have been deeply impressed with the belonging of the students and the numbers representing their school. The parental support has been overwhelmingly positive. However, there have been a very minor number of incidents where the coaching team have reported that there has been some overcoaching or overenthusiasm from the sidelines from parents. It is very important that we reflect on this area of our sporting provision to enable students to have the very best environment to thrive in. I think in essence it comes down to 3 non-negotiables when supporting your son/ daughter. 1. 2. 3.
Keep sideline vocal support positive towards either team. Do not shout on instructions to kick, pass, run etc. Do not voice any negative feedback to referees or umpires.

Please see below infographic which will help to understand the above non-negotiables. and a link to an article from a very prominent professional Gordon MacLellan who has conducted lots of research into sideline behaviour. He runs a company called “working with parents in Sport”.

Head Injuries & Concussion Saturday 22nd April 2023
Concussion is a complex process caused by trauma that transmits force to the brain either directly or indirectly and results in temporary impairment of brain function. Its development and resolution are rapid and spontaneous. Ultimately if you are unsure at any stage if a player has a head injury or is concussed you should seek medical attention. Listed below are some of the possible signs of concussion. Headaches - It is only normal after a blow to the head to suffer a mild headache. There could be some bruising or mild swelling over the scalp which may be tender, but this doesn’t necessarily mean a player has concussion. If the headache seems to be getting worse this could be a cause for concern so seek medical attention. Drowsiness - Means they cannot be roused. It can be common for players to want to sleep for a short time (especially children), and it will be okay to let them do so. If there are further concerns you can wake them a few times during the night, especially if a knock on the head has happened just before bedtime. If, on the other
hand, they are difficult toCricket wake or Boys v St. Paul’s School show signs of confusion, seek medical attention. Other Symptoms - Confusion, unsteadiness, memory loss and convulsiveness. If players show any signs of the above they should seek medical attention. These are merely guidelines as you know your student better than anyone else, but please remember signs and symptoms could take up to 48 hours to develop and should be monitored. Berkhamsted School takes all head injuries seriously and all members of PE staff are First Aid trained and follow the RFU Headcase protocol if a student sustains a head injury. In serious cases students would be referred to a local hospital (listed at the beginning of the programme) as they would with any other serious injury.
