OPINION
Fearless Fund: The fight to financially liberate Black women-owned businesses By Sarena Duncan Black women are amazing, period. Our vibrant culture exudes through all that we do. We’re human first and foremost, with dreams, desires, passion, and purpose. We’re mothers, inventors, and friends. We are the top labor and financial contributors to society, and we are commanding recognition and honor more than ever today. So why is there a constant need to defend our
swer this very question. Founded in 2018 by Arian Simone and Ayana Parsons, the firm provides funding to women of color, specifically black women. According to the company’s mission, “Fearless Fund invests pre-seed, seed level, or series A financing. as a black woman attainable and a true reality for the most overlooked and undervalued populations across the world. Extending its reach beyond black women, Fearless Fund has garnered the attention of diverse groups of color, further validating the strong financial need for many individuals. According to an article published by Dr. Regina S. Baker and Dr. Fenaba R. Addo for the American Bar Association (ABA), “For every dollar paid to non-Hispanic white men, white non-Hispanic women, and Black women are paid 79 and 62 cents, respectively, an indication of the overrepresentation of Black women in low-wage service and sub-minimum wage jobs (Banks, 2019).” It can be difficult to fathom what a black woman’s day-to-day struggles may be because we can make it look easy, polished, and beautiful. Maybe this will shine more light on the disparities still present. Thankfully, U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash has recently denied the request of Edward Blum's American Alliance for Equal Rights to conduct a pre-injunction on the brand. This decision will stop entities from blocking Fearless Fund from focusing its financing efforts on women of color entrepreneurs. A step in the right direction.
related to the exclusion of nongroups-of-color. According to The Washington Post, “The fund was sued this summer by a conservative group alleging that its program discriminated based on race by exclusively handing out grants to Black female business owners.” Women of color have a necessity to navigate the world as best we can. Black women especially are an undeniably impressive force to be reckoned with in the financial industry. Simone and Parsons have proved their fearlessness and tenacity to diverse groups, even white men. Fearless Fund wouldn’t need to exist if women of color had seats at the financial tables along with the equity and leverage that other groups receive. Women of color shouldn’t have to constantly prove worthiness, credibility, intention, or business acumen. Simone and Parsons deserve their flowers for creating an impressive financial network for businesswomen of color. Thank you to my sisters for your fearlessness.

Feed Your Soul By Brittany K. Hunt
INGREDIENTS
1 package of Turkey wings 2 cups of Jasmine Rice Old Bay seasoning Kosher Salt Freshly cracked black pepper Yellow onion Sliced portobello mushrooms 2 tablespoons of flour 1 cup of chicken stock ¼ stick of butter
RECIPE
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Season turkey wings liberally with Old Bay seasoning and freshly cracked black pepper on both sides and drizzle with olive oil. Then, place turkey wings in the oven UNCOVERED for one hour. For best rice results, rinse rice thoroughly until the water runs clear to remove as much starch as possible. Chop yellow onion and set aside. Gently wipe debris off sliced mushrooms with a damp cloth. After baking the turkey wings for one hour, remove from the oven, spread chopped onions and mushrooms over the top, sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper, then COVER with foil. Decrease the oven temperature to 250 degrees and bake for another hour. Cook rice using your chosen method. After baking the turkey wings for the second hour: • Transfer wings from the baking pan and pour liquid into a small dish. • Using a small pot, melt ¼ stick of butter, add two tablespoons of flour, and stir until combined; then add juice from the wings, followed by chicken stock. PHOTO CREDIT: STOCK PHOTO
The summer solstice has come and gone, which means cooler outdoor temperatures and likely cravings for warm comfort foods. Many people are heavy on using their air fryers, and it is an essential small kitchen appliance, but now it is time to turn the oven on again. Nothing says “I love you” like soul food! Try this smothered turkey wings and rice recipe.
• Continuously stir until thickened over low heat. Once thickened, pour over turkey wings, and serve with rice. Now it is time to plate, say grace, and EAT! This recipe can be put into your meal prep rotation to keep your soul warm all fall and winter. Brittany is a self-professed foodie who gladly tells everyone, “Good food is her unofficial love language!” She lives in an Atlanta suburb with her husband and two daughters. SURVIVORS WITH VOICES Dr. Alissa R. Jones shares her domestic violence abuse background in this empowering interview to help women survivors regain their lives and keep it that way. Read more on how she gained back her confidence and why her platform, Survivors With Voices, is necessary.
Q:
Interview by ‘Twins of Media’ La Trisha McIntosh and La Tasha Taylor
Can you describe that moment when you knew in your journey as a domestic abuse survivor that you had to help others? The moment I knew I had to help others was after 23 years of being silent. I shared my testimony for the first time, and another survivor shared with me that she was going to commit suicide, and after hearing my testimony, she changed her mind. I then knew that my vision for the platform of Survivors with Voices Foundation was bigger than me and my testimony. Survivors need to know that they're not alone and their past could be another survivor's present. Q: What did it take to gain your confidence and strength back? To gain my confidence and strength back, it took me going through therapy and getting back to loving myself. Emotional abuse that leads to physical can break you down to feeling like you're worth nothing. I understood I deserved better than what I was receiving in the abusive relationships I found myself participating in. Then, I took accountability for the part I played by allowing the abuse‑ and owning it. My strength comes from becoming a voice to Empower others and impact their lives through Survivors with Voices Foundation. Q: "Survivors With Voices" (SWV). Can you share the background
14 | BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM
of your platform and how the community can get involved with the foundation? The background of our platform is based on my testimony & the loss of my mother, who also lived a life suffering abuse. I used my testimony to empower the next survivor and created a platform for others to share their testimony and empower others. Our platform has grown to eight cities over the decade we have been in existence. The community can get involved by contacting us, whether for assistance, becoming a voice, or volunteer opportunities by visiting our website survivorswithvoices.org. Q: Your conference "Collateral Damage: Divorcing Dysfunction" happend this month. What led you to choose the theme title? How did Original Destiny's Child Member LeToya Luckett come on board, and what can people expect when they attend? The theme is Spirit Led through my healing journey. After my divorce four years ago, I had to revisit my healing journey after going through another abusive relationship. This time, I needed to dig a little deeper than ever before. As I sat in my singleness, dealing with all the emotions of my recent divorce and leaving an abusive situation, I had to understand that I needed to unlearn the toxic behaviors we often learn and repeat. We are often celebrated for walking away from a
toxic relationship; however, no one teaches the process of unlearning those behaviors to walk into a healthy relationship. I realized I was collateral damage to being molested at the age of 11, finding out about my biological father at age 13, and then domestic violence relationships that made me understand that people become collateral damage to their life circumstances. Divorcing Your Dysfunction: Additionally, it was spirit led because we can live in a world of dysfunction where we need to divorce it to move into a season of a healthy relationship. At this event, we want to dig deep and help survivors divorce the dysfunction that has held them back from experiencing relationships in a healthy atmosphere. I was intrigued by LeToya's story of being a mother and being divorced. She is a hometown legend, so I wanted to connect with her to share her story of triumph. Attendees enjoyed an experience of Survivor's Testimonies of Empowerment, a Comedy Hour, "Laughter for the Soul," and a Gala and award Ceremony to celebrate survivors who have overcome many life challenges. Q: How do you look after yourself, especially in a space where you pour into others? Self-Care-Nails & Pedicure, exercising, eating healthy & travelling for relaxation. Q: What makes Alissa happy?

Walking in my purpose and helping survivors to become the voice against emotional and physical abuse. Empowering survivors to "Unlock Their Voice" and heal the wounds that can't be seen and being surrounded by genuine friends and traveling. Q: What do you want to tell our audience about why your platform is necessary? Survivors with Voices Foundation is necessary because we not only help survivors use their voices against emotional and physical abuse. Survivors With Voices is dedicated to being a sanctuary for victims of domestic abuse and their children. We offer holistic support that extends beyond physical healing, providing confidential shelters, immediate medical care, and a nurturing environment for emotional and spiritual recovery. Grounded in empathy and respect, SWV welcomes all individuals, fostering hope and facilitating paths to independent and dignified lives free from abuse. Q: As the year 2023 winds down. What is your current vibe? My current vibe is one of gratefulness that God has chosen me to fulfill His purpose for His Glory. Dr. Alissa R. Jones, a prolific Speaker, and Author, is a sexual abuse and domestic violence survivor who turned her pain into Power! She is the Founder of Survivors with Voices Foundation, a 501© 3 Texas-based organization, and currently mentors several chapters under her organization. mammograms.
California native Vonncile Harris figured something wasn’t right when she felt a lump on her left breast. “After weeks of worry and additional exams,” the mother of four learned a day after her birthday in September, the test results came back cancer-free. “That was the best birthday gift ever,” says Vonncile, who shared her experience on social media in an effort to encourage women to perform self-examinations and get their
You recently had a health scare when you found a lump on your breast. What was your initial thought, and why is self-examination so critical? My first thought was the worst-case scenario. Cancer, so I believe self-examination is critical for early detection. Secondly, it's FREE. You can do it as often and as frequently as you like. Those who may neglect annual exams can still perform their own initial examination. It doesn't replace mammograms but can certainly create an urgency to make an appointment in the event something is detected. Thankfully, the results returned cancer-free; what was the waiting period like? And who did you lean on most during that time? The waiting period was nerve-wracking, but thankfully, I had a good support system with a mix of family and friends who kept me grounded and filled me with positive thoughts.
16 | BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM
With your recent social media post detailing your experience, will you use this to help other women who may put off getting their yearly mammograms? Absolutely. In fact, that was precisely the purpose of my post. I figured if I could convince one person to get their yearly mammogram, that post would be successful. I also have three daughters (now young women) and two granddaughters, so it is my responsibility to lead by example. What more would you like to tell women about self-care and checkups? Because our lifestyles can play a significant role in our overall health. Think Prevention.... Not Cure! Getting regular checkups and practicing self-care lowers the risk of illness and improves your physical and mental health. How do you now prioritize your health post-test results? I have always prioritized my health; however, this has reminded me of how important it is to stay on top of it. Do you have anything special planned to celebrate you and your health journey? No special plans. I am blessed to be able to share a positive outcome, which will be a continuous celebration. FALL, FASHION, TRENDS
2023 Top Fall Fashion Trends
– It’s All About Variety, Chic Silhouettes & Color By Sarena Duncan This fall/winter season the runways were flooded with reinvented peplum skirts, vibrant yellows and lots of layering, my personal favorite trend during the colder months. According to Vogue Magazine some of the hottest colors seen in streetstyle is chocolate brown, camel, olive latte brown, vanilla bean cream, colorful totes, and jeans. You’ll need a bold staple clutch, or three; a must-have to pair with any of the top trendy ensembles this season. And you may even have some of these items currently in your closet, which should make you smile! Just in case you want to spruce things up a bit more, let’s get into my top seven picks for the 2023 fall/winter season.
Bold Reds What better way to exude love than by wearing red, right? Maybe wearing a silky Balmain set with large shoulder bags to match would suffice. Well, you’re in luck because one of the most appropriate and timeless trends this year is a great pop of red color. Try any shade because there all great on every skin tone. Whether you decide to go super luxurious or ultra-polished and chic, there’s something for everyone.

Businesswoman Chic
Next, we have the effortless, put together trend, the woman living in her purpose. My father would always say, “Dress as the woman you know you are, stunning.” Chanel anyone? Lovely, fashionable, and classy are the words that come to mind with the businesswoman trend. It’s all about personal style and professionalism today. There is a resurgence of women’s business attire and it’s oversized with lots of variety and of course beauty. In a world where showing as much skin as possible has become the norm and fits certain individual style, it’s also refreshing to see that a tailored suit or a lovely twopiece can still reign supreme. Versatility and having options when it comes to fashion is crucial to selfexpression. Whatever your personal style may be, it’s customized to your taste, and it represents you. So, layer it up and get that business deal done, sis!
Black Coats An absolute staple! The color black just embodies luscious, maturity, poise, and grace, especially on an overcoat. Mix and match this yearly trend with virtually anything you have in your wardrobe. Black exudes elegance and mystery; it’s slimming and it’s essential in a gal’s wardrobe. Throw it over your minidress or your tee and sweats.

Cutout/Sheer Dresses

Now this is a trend that is sure to turn heads while forming to your shape just right. It’s important to pick the level of sheerness that’s most comfortable for you. Remember it’s all about individual expression. Cutout and sheer dress styles have variety and can really look stunning with complementary undergarments, accessories and layering if needed.
Scoop Neck Top The scoop neck style has a fitted, smooth, sleek silhouette with a plunging neckline that’s sure to turn heads. Wear it with your favorite jeans or even a jumpsuit. Grab a top in a few vibrant colors and you’ll be good to go. No need to shy away from bold and vibrant colors like baby blue and fuchsia. Style your look your way.

Bare Shoulder This trend is a stunner for sure. The neckline screams elegance and sophistication. It’s the perfect combination and can be dressed up or down with a denim jacket or some blinged out hoops. Another staple to have in your collection, ladies.

Metallic Shoes With Beyonce’s Renaissance Tour recently coming to a close, fashion connoisseurs have thoroughly embraced the effects of her influence this fall/winter season with the return of the metallic footwear trend. It’s a great seasonal staple that will jazz up your wardrobe and maybe even your mood! The perfect color and sparkle for the season is here to stay. I love a good boot myself and I adore metallic, silver and glitter. It’s time to embrace the bedazzle. Happy styling!

Founder Shontay Lundy says the “Culture and strategy of Black Girl Sunscreen is we are speaking to the everyday woman.” The company the beauty pioneer created in 2016 continues to enjoy enormous success today, but not without the hard work that goes behind maintaining her popular brand. Shontay is a great mix of a powerhouse businesswoman who doesn’t take herself too seriously. Read more on how she came up with the concept for Black Girl Sunscreen and her thoughts on Janet Jackson taking a selfie with her product.
Q:
Q: Shontay, we have to say that we’re so proud of you and what you’ve accomplished. We love Black Girl Sunscreen! Please tell us about who you are and all about your business.
Sure. Before I answer, I must first say that it’s important for me to have self-awareness. This is something that I’ve developed over time. From a business stance, Shontay is brave. Shontay is hardworking. Shontay is currently living in the moment, and she values the time spent with people no matter what we’re doing. I’m in a space in my life where I need a stress-free environment. So, if you come to my office, it’s peaceful. Although I have a serious and important product for black girls in the health and preventative category, I don’t take myself too seriously. Nothing is that deep. I’ve created a tranquil work environment to keep me on track. I have a different perspective because I’ve been around people who are sick and may not get to see tomorrow. So, for me, Shontay is brave, hardworking, and lives in the moment. Twins of Media: We love that, yes. Q: How did you come up with the concept for your product? Was it created in your kitchen? Tell us how it all started. I’m a woman of the sun originally from upstate New York by way of South Florida and Miami. I’m currently residing in Los Angeles. And while in Miami, I was at the beach and doing outdoor activities. When I transitioned to LA, I was doing a lot of hiking and just always out in the sun. My friends asked me, “Hey, are you wearing sunscreen.” My answer was no. They offered me something that clearly didn’t work well for my 24 | BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM

Meet Sheila Hall. The Naturopathic and Herbal Medicine practitioner who customizes the health needs of Women Entrepreneurs and Business owners through her Health and Wellness Concierge service. In this read, she shares how she helps women stay "Healthy and Hustling" and discusses her book "Spiritual Healing Using Natural Health" and its impact on women's health today. How did you come up with the term "Healthy while Hustling," and what motivated you to start the Masterclass? I've embraced this term since I was forced to become a fulltime entrepreneur. I had lost my corporate job, but I had a side hustle. At that time, I was recently divorced, a new homeowner, and had bought a new car. I needed a job that could pay my bills and health insurance. Since I didn't have 32 | BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM
a support system, I knew that the number one thing to support myself was to learn how to stay healthy while I hustled if I was going to become a full-time entrepreneur. I guess I never said "Healthy while Hustling" until recently. As I started becoming involved with coaching classes and masterminds, learning how to grow my business, I noticed how many inspiring entrepreneurs were unhealthy, struggling with weight gain and lack of energy. How you show up in a room is one of the most important things for an entrepreneur. This type of training was lacking from most leadership-building platforms, which inspired me to start one. So many sacrifice their health for the dream. In addition to the Masterclass, how do you get people to take seriously the phrase, "Don't compromise health for your hustle!" Taking our health for granted is easy because our bodies are resilient. We must remember that we are naturally dying every day, and not honoring our health will speed up the natural process. That's a big price to pay for a dream that you may not be able to enjoy or for a dream that couldn't come true because of your health. What quick tool can you share for those unable to participate in the Masterclass? Listen to your body. Take 30 minutes by yourself in a quiet environment and envision that you are inside of yourself exploring.
Our bodies whisper to us what they need. We must pay attention because we don't want our bodies to yell at us! When we take those whispers seriously, we usually can adjust our imbalances before trauma creeps in. Your group courses offer so much as a reminder to practice self-care. Was there ever a time when you compromised your health for your career? Yes! When I first started building my business, I had just turned 40. I hustled so hard to keep afloat and was able to build a multi-six-figure business until I reached 49. At some point, I stopped listening to my body. I stopped paying attention to what I was eating or the stress that I was under. I knew I felt different, and something was off. I even went to my doctor, but she couldn't find anything. Six months later, I went into menopause. I ignored my perimenopause symptoms, so I wasn't prepared for what came next. Unfortunately for me, I had a bad menopausal experience in which I fell into a deep, suicidal depression that caused me to lose everything that I built. I overcame my hormonal imbalances by using natural practices instead of medications. What has been the feedback from employers participating in your "Health is Wealth" program? Do you also extend this to individuals and small businesses? The feedback has been amazing. Knowing how to implement key practices into their lives without
disrupting their hustle was well received. Their work environment became more pleasant. Their production goals increased, and one of the most important things is that their health insurance premiums started decreasing because people weren't using their insurance as often. I offer this to sm all businesses and individuals needing a more customized plan to help them get healthier. How important is the cost when it comes to your program? Many forgo healthier choices because of high costs (e.g., more nutritious food options). I always tell people to take a moment and add up what they are spending on healthcare, food, medical bills, and medications. Then, I asked them how beneficial it would be if I could help them lower those costs. Many assume that healthier choices are more expensive. I've never seen a head of broccoli cost more than high blood pressure medication. You authored the book "Spiritual Healing Using Natural Health." What is one takeaway from the book that you can share? I wrote this book after I lost my brother to AIDS. I thought about all of the natural practices he could have done which could have improved his life. The most important part was it didn't cost a thing. The only requirement was to listen. God naturally provides many healing tools just waiting for us to take advantage of for free. What sets Unique Scripts Wellness apart from other wellness programs/ businesses? And what's next? What sets Unique Scripts Wellness apart is our approach to focusing on the root causes of a person or a business. We will not give you the cookie-cutter bandages that other wellness programs offer. We provide people and businesses with Unique Solutions to their Unique Needs, so every approach and solution is different. I want to do a national and international tour promoting my new book next year to give women tools and practices to help them live healthily while Husting!

FINANCIAL BEHAVIOR
Q&A discussion conducted by ‘La Tasha T.’ and Anita R. Johnson, renowned Financial Behaviorist.
Q:
I’ll get right into it. Tell me, who is Anita R. Johnson, Financial Behaviorist, and what was your first relationship with money?
LT: Yes. That’s good because that is something that a lot of us struggle with. Because these aren’t typical conversations that we have in our households.
(Laughs) Oh wow, you know that’s something that I ask my clients. Both of my parents were educators, so I moved here to California in the late eighties. I had always wanted to be in business for myself and I began my career in finance as an accountant. I soon noticed a lot of interesting things happening with women and their money. Even with myself, I wanted to discover what was going on and why. I began to research to determine this unique relationship with money. I realized that I have a decent one, although it didn’t start that way. My father, my dad spoiled me. So, when I married, I thought my dynamic with my husband would be the same way and it just wasn’t. But you know my relationship with money has gotten better since then. I understand that I must have my finances in order before I can advise anyone else on their relationship with money.
Q: I believe you’ve written six books, is that correct? Yes. Q: How do you use concepts discussed in your books like financial behavior to make money a less scary topic for a lot of us? It’s important to me that people understand the value of money. And I don’t mean value like it being the best thing since sliced bread, no. I think of money as a tool, and you own the tool. The tool doesn't own you. I work with individuals on how they grew up compared to how they are handling their finances today. So, if you didn’t talk about it in your early years, you’re likely not going to talk about it now. And, I must agree with you, we don’t talk about money enough in our community. We just don’t discuss how to manage our finances; we’ve
never been shown. Rather, most of us are just trying to survive. LT: Thank you. That’s great. Q: Please explain through your platform why there is a focus on empowering women. Especially considering the unique challenges that black women face. I chose black women because our community has such a rich and beautiful history. So, I’m a Delta, but I often hear one of my AKA friends say that black women will rule and run the world. And you know I believe this also. We’re already doing so. One of the things that black women need to reconcile is the need to be everything to everybody but us. LT: Bingo! You know we have children that we give things to all the time. We have family members that we consistently do things for, and we don’t take care of ourselves the way we should. I feel that we as black women need to get away from the struggle that we often-times find ourselves in when it comes BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM | 35
to money. The whole concept of let’s rob Peter to pay Paul and then ask Mark if she has some money too. (Laughs). I want us to get away from that. LT: (Laughs) That’s good, I like that. Mary’s in there too. I’ll have to use that (laughs). Q: Anita, as the holiday season approaches how will you repurpose? Because I believe that everything we do can be repurposed for a different, more appropriate period. How will you repurpose the message in your book Christmas Past, Present and Future? Tis the season to be frustrated. And then also, what spending tip can you offer for buying peace? Well, one of the reasons why I wanted to write this book is because during the holidays, especially Christmastime, people often buy things to impress people they don’t even like. LT: Yes, indeed. My dad told me this a long time ago and didn’t fully grasp what it meant. Now I understand that we’re frustrated by the pressures placed upon us and our finances during the holiday season. It can be truly stressful. A lot of times we’re putting items on our credit cards and overspending. In the end, we must pay for these mistakes because we haven’t learned how to create a healthy relationship with our money. So, when 36 | BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM
Christmas comes around, we find that we’re still paying for our decision from months or years ago. It’s a vicious cycle. One of the things that I would suggest that people do is to create a list of the top five people that you would like to buy gifts for during the holidays and that’s it. Keep is controlled. Or, you can do a gift swap and it doesn’t have to be a lot of money. LT: I like that. Yeah. You could also learn how to create your gift. LT: Yes! You know, one of the things that I talk about in the classes that I teach is young couples with children. Maybe those couples want to travel. You can create a childcare service that will be a lifesaver for parents. You could come up with nice activities or cook them a hot meal. This shows your thoughtfulness, rather than simply purchasing a big gift. And you know that you really can’t afford it. When it comes to the children, you really should involve everyone in the gift-giving and gift-creating process. Think cookies, cakes, pies, those types of things. LT: I like that, yes. Definitely. I feel like this conversation is a plus. If you’ll allow me to Segway for a moment. I have a 16-year-old and a young adult; I’m a boy mom. Open house was this week for my teenager and he’s currently taking a financial management class.
And I wish I had this option as a youth because this in addition to classes about credit would have been so helpful to me and my peers coming up. I feel like we really would have benefitted from our elders when it comes to money, but I’m happy my son has the knowledge early. He currently has a 99% so mom is happy about that (laughs). And I do have another question listed here, but you know there’s a phrase, a spiritual one. It says and I’m paraphrasing, “Our gifts will make room for us. Wealth is the gift that’s been given from God.” Q: When it comes to black women, how do you look at the idea of our gifts making room for us? What does this mean to you? How do you convey this message to women? For me, my talents and gifts have compelled me to be more grateful. I truly am grateful for them. You know, I was just thinking the other day about my story. We’re from Louisiana and I married young. My mother had warned me not to marry, but I did it anyway. I thought about if I had stayed in Louisiana and remained married to this person, what would my life be like today? And then I thought to myself, you know my life has turned out just the way it was supposed to. I can say today that I’m grateful for the struggles that I had with my finances because I learned a lesson. Whenever I’m struggling with something, I always ask what is the lesson I need to learn here? Who am I supposed to touch with this
lesson? Trust me, this is hard when you’re going through it personally. Because sometimes we don’t realize until we’re in it what’s happening. I remain grateful by always asking myself what it is that I need to learn. It’s humbling and quite introspective. I am thankful for my gifts, talents, and all that’s been given to me because I work on myself constantly. My goal has always been to offer this liberation and truth to all black women. Q: As a woman who loves the Financial Behaviorist, how will you be spending the holidays this season?
LT: Congratulations, wow. Yeah, thank you. And my research of course deals with financial socialization in black women.
“Scrooge.” And my children will tell you this is the truth; I was Scrooge at the time. So, for me, I’m not going to spend a lot of money during the holidays; I never do. Since my birthday falls around this time too, I typically just deal with my birthday. I spend lots of time with myself to sort through my emotions surrounding getting older, getting better, and being the best person that I can be at that time. LT: Yes. You know as I get older, I tend to think about how we can all benefit one another because we all have resources. Anita, this conversation won’t stop here because money management can be a challenging topic concerning entrepreneurship. I’m looking forward to speaking to you again soon. Until then, happy holidays in advance, happy birthday, happy PhD, all of that!
LT: OK.
(Laughs)
So yeah, that’s my major goal. To be able to complete my degree shows my credibility even more. I think I’m credible already, however, I know that the world wants this kind of stuff. They want the doctor. This is one thing I have going right now that’s quite major for me.
Anita: Thank you so much. Thanks for inviting me.
(Laughs) What’s next for me is that I’m finishing up my PhD at the end of this year.
LT: That is major, yeah.
LT: You’re so welcome. Take care. Anita: Will do, bye-bye. LT: Bye.

GIVE CPR SAVE A LIFE
I
By Lucinda Allen
f you have been watching the news and following the stories lately, you will have already heard about the countless lives that were saved because a bystander performed CPR. More than 350,000 outof-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the United States however, bystanders only perform CPR 46% of the time. Why is that?

There can be many factors that lead to a person not starting CPR when they see there is a need but to empower others let's focus more on why they should. During cardiac arrest, immediate CPR can double or even triple a person's chance of survival. Here are some simple tips that can help you save a life. If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 911, and if you are in a public place or a place that has an

You can place your phone on speaker as you wait for instructions from the dispatcher and begin handson CPR. To perform hands-on CPR, push hard and fast in the center of the person's chest to the beat of any tune that is 100 to 120 beats per minute, such as the classic disco song "Stayin' Alive." What is an AED? Chances are you have seen them at places like the airport, gym, grocery store, and some schools. They are automated external defibrillators. They prompt you through the steps of placing the pads on a

Listen to the prompts, wait for paramedics to arrive, and you could save a life; it is that easy! CPR training can help people feel more comfortable helping when they see someone in distress. EASY RELATIONSHIPS AND
THE LOST REMOTE 5 Ways Toward Purpose By Dr. Stephanie C. Life has universal truths. Happiness is a choice; socks disappear in the laundry, and the remote control will forever be missing when your favorite show is about to come on. Now, I'm no expert, but the quest to find purpose in our relationships mirrors our struggle with that elusive remote. 1. BEGININGS: Unwrapping the NEW! Remember when that shiny new TV arrived, and you unwrapped it and the slick new remote? Excite‑ ment!! It was new and full of so much potential. You can't wait to discover what all the buttons and set‑ tings mean. Key to Purpose: Cherish the excitement and remember why you bought into the relationship. 2. Comfort Sets In Binge Mode Have you ever been binge-watching a program, and the remote just disappears? One minute, everything is okay, and the next, you are frantically searching for the remote. Fast forward a few months or years, and after the initial excitement wears off, comfort sets in, and we take for granted what the remote and our partner can do. Key to Purpose: Value pres‑ ence and awareness in relationships. 3. Blame Game: Where did you put it? It is human nature. The remote is lost, and suddenly, it's the dog's fault, your partner's fault, everybody's fault, but your own. In relationships, we can shift blame instead of reflecting on our own actions. Key to Purpose: Take responsibility! Perhaps you mis‑ placed the remote. 4. Manual Mode: Going Old School A TV without a remote control turns into a workout quickly. It means constantly getting up to change the channels manually. In relationships, you some‑ times must get into a manual or old-school mode. Bypass texts or DMs and get face-to-face, listen, and engage. Key to Purpose: Embrace basics. Direct
communication can change the channel of your rela‑ tionship. 5. Relationship Reboots: The New TV Syndrome We've all been there: that moment when you con‑ sider ditching the old TV (and the pesky remote) for a new model. Tempting, right? But here's the thing: every TV and remote will come with its own quirks, so decide to do a reboot. Relationships also benefit from a 'reboot' – a date night or a shared adventure. Remember, the grass is greener when you water it. Key to Purpose: Address issues in the relationship, reconnect, and dwell on the good times. The Joy of Finding Purpose (and the Remote) When you finally find that elusive remote, there's a joy that's hard to describe. When you find a shared purpose, laugh, or simply sit together in silence, watching your favorite show, there's a warmth and contentment that's unbeatable in the relationship. Key to Purpose: Celebrate rediscoveries, big and small. In the grand sitcom of life, relationships and lost remotes teach us patience, the value of shared purpose, and the sheer joy of rediscovery. As for the lost remote, it'll turn up, just like purpose in a rela‑ tionship – usually when you least expect it. Dr. Stephanie C. is a highly sought-after speaker, purpose propellant, and author. Opposites Attract do

My husband and I just clebrated 24 years of marriage, and if you knew us separately, you’d wonder how we got together. On the surface, we appear to be polar opposites, but we complement each other very well. Where I’m too serious, he’s a jokester. When he’s casting a broad vision, I help fill in the details. Before I continue, I must share how we came together. We met during my sophomore year at Duke University when a lastminute cancellation of my spring break plans caused me to go home to Seattle. I met him on the second of four days I would be in town. He was Security at the new Planet Hollywood downtown. He invited me and the girlfriend I was with to dinner the following evening since we were two 42 | BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM
“hometown girls.” My friend had to cancel the next day, so that left just the two of us. We shared a friendly conversation over a sampler platter. On day four, I went with him on a shopping trip. He gave me his “calling card” number to ensure I would keep in touch once I left. I called him weekly from school, and when I returned home for the summer, we spent intentional time together. Finally, at the end of the summer, we had our first kiss, decided we were an item, and the official long-distance courtship began. Here’s where the next unique part of our relationship unfolds. Due to the distance, we had only seen each other six times when we married in July 1999 after my graduation in May. While this may seem odd, here’s why it worked
for us and it can work for you: 1) When you speak by phone most of the time, it allows for deeper, more meaningful conversation. You are more open to discussing things that you might be shyer about if you were in person. 2) Some couples see one another almost every day but still do not get to know each other well because there is more television watching than talking, or it’s mostly physical interaction. 3) I was able to stay focused and continue developing myself and preparing to be a wife when we were apart. Despite the long-distance aspect of our relationship, I can honestly say we got off
to a healthy start. I’ve never experienced a moment of “OMG, I wish I had known this about my then boyfriend, or I didn’t know that” about him. Don’t get me wrong, he has some quirks that still drive me crazy all these years later, but they aren’t big enough to spoil the relationship. My husband is crazy, sexy, cool, loves God, loves me to infinity, and is loyal to his friends and family. He is my number one fan and cheerleader who has pushed me to do some wonderful things that I didn’t know I had in me. It is what you want in a relationship. We keep our relationship HEALTHY by keeping God first, communicating often, not going to bed upset, and never allowing our children (now 21 and 17) to cause division between us. We stay HAPPY by understanding that one of us can have a bad day at any time, so we allow grace and give each other space when needed. It is easy to do because we understand what we have in one another. We respect our mutual investments of time, resources, and heart work. We support each other emotionally, personally, and professionally and work together as a team. We follow the Godly principles of marriage, meaning my husband is the head of our home, but he also respects
my ability to handle certain things better than he does and allows me to do so. And lastly, but certainly not least, we find many ways to keep it HOT! We met at 19 and 24 and are now 45 and 50, so of course, our bodies and needs have changed, but we keep the romance fresh! You must keep dating each other to keep the laughter and fun in your marriage. Try different restaurants and amusement venues, take long walks, have romantic picnics, or whatever the two of you enjoy. Don’t get bored and in a routine in the bedroom just because you’ve been married a long time. There must be spontaneity in your romantic life. Set the stage, buy new lingerie, plan a special getaway. You can even discuss what you like and don’t like in the bedroom, things you want to try…lovemaking is play, so explore and have fun together. God, grace, and good times have kept this relationship healthy, happy, and hot! May these keys bring out the best in your relationship, too.

AROUND
THE TOWN CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER By 'Twins of Media' La Trisha Mcintosh and La Tasha Taylor
C
edric The Entertainer has written his first novel! Flipping Boxcars pays homage to his late grandfather through the main character, Babe. The fiction read is set during the Great Depression and World War II and is a "valentine to close-knit families and tightly woven communities of that era. As part of a 6-city tour, Cedric recently dropped into town in Houston for his CED Talk moderated by Dessie Brown Jr., the head of Genius Entertainment, a Marsai Martin company. Rockhouse Southern Kitchen was the perfect setting for an intimate time featuring comedy, conversations & cocktails. KG Smooth, award-winning host of The Quiet Storm on Majic 102.1, and event producers Blinc Media greeted guests. The star of 'The Neighborhood' read excerpts from his book before getting up close and personal and taking pictures with fans as they sipped on "Zetta" Ced's exclusive wine, inspired by his late mother

Rosetta B. Kyle, who Ced described as "a woman with class that loved red wine." Plenty of laughter filled the room as Ced provided the crowd with humorous and inspirational moments like married life (the comedian has been married to his lovely wife, Lorna Wells, for 24 years) and his longevity in the entertainment industry. A highlight of the evening was a video that featured a host of Cedric’s celebrity friends like Marlon Wayans, Eddie Griffin, Chris Spencer, and former MLB player David Justice, who all congratulated him on his new novel. A special surprise was a video appearance from Je'Niece

McCullough, the daughter of the late comedy legend Bernie Mac. Read what Cedric had to say when we asked him during the Q&A segment what he learned most about himself writing the book, considering his grandfather passed away before the "Kings of Comedy" legend was even born."I grew up in a single-parent household. It was just my mom, my little sister, and myself, so all the man qualities that I feel I have in writing this book and understanding who my grandfather was—is a combination, of course, of the gentlemen in the neighborhood and other people's dads who teach you. But somehow, I feel my grandfather's DNA, like that man sh** he was on… gave way to the idea of me being an entrepreneur, or being a person that's a go-getter, or being a person that's not sitting back and letting life happen, I feel that's what I learned in this book. That I was directly connected to something that
gave me wings, gave me power, gave me strength when I didn't really know why or how I actually turned from a dude from St. Louis to Ced The Entertainer." @cedtheentertainer Flipping BoxCars is available wherever books are sold.

The Beyonce and Swift Effect: Cultural Influence of Renaissance and Eras World Tours
R
emember that shocking moment at the 2009 VMAs when Kanye West walked on stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video? West grabbed the mic and said, "I'm gonna let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time." Bey can be seen with shock on her face as Swift stood on stage speechless. But, oh how the tables have turned! That was a moment when Swift transitioned from country to pop, and Beyoncé's Lemonade album became the inspirational anthem for black women. The Beyhive and the Swifties adore Bey and Swift for their undeniable ability to connect and inspire the world through business, self-love, freedom of expression, fashion, and beauty. They’ve proven this fact on the big stage week after week and have created a global conversation surrounding women’s impact on the economy. And for those who can’t attend, you’re in luck because you’ll have the chance to see both performers on the big screen as they’ve both creatively transformed a culmination of their shows into movies. The Eras Tour concert debuted in theaters on Oct. 13 and Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé with be out December 1st. Tickets are on sale now. Although Swift’s tour ends on November 23, 2024, the two singers collectively generated more than $9 billion in economic activity. Maybe West’s charade was some sort of good luck

charm! It’s not about comparing Beyoncé to Swift, though. Both creatives have a particular effect on their respective fanbase and the world. The Renaissance World Tour ended on October 1, 2023, in Kansas City, a bittersweet moment for the singer, her daughter Blue Ivy Carter, her dancers Les Twins, and the entire team. “When I am performing, I am nothing but free,” Beyoncé says in her movie trailer. “My goal for this tour was to create a place where everyone is free, and no one is judged.” Mission accomplished Queen Bey! Her tour was inclusive of all people, and she made a significant impact on the fashion industry with her jaw dropping looks from sheer bodysuits to floorlength gowns. And the Beyhive followed suit with their unique ensembles to match the colorful sparkly theme. One of the most memorable moments was when Diana Ross surprised Bey on her 42nd birthday, September 4th with a live serenade, a clip posted to X shows. The film will undoubtedly generate more revenue for the economy and add to the legacy in the music industry. According to The Messenger Swift is predicted to surpass anyone’s expectations by generating roughly $80 billion overall. The pop sensation’s world tour will begin in November and it’s clear that her influence is stronger than ever. Her recent connection to NFL star Travis Kelce caused his fanbase to increase substantially
and put the league on notice on September 24th. it’s predicted that she will also have great reach with the sports market, which is huge. The 12-time Grammy winner has 84 concert dates around the world and she’s making everyone watch her moves. Both entertainers have a very different fanbases with completely unique sounds, yet both have instantaneous influence, no question. Beyoncé has reinvented herself over and over again in her tour while impacting black women, as the most compelling consumers today. Swift reaches a younger demographic of hopeless romantics and creatives. When describing her songs Swift said, "I think songwriting is the ultimate form of being able to make anything that happens in your life productive." The two women are one of one.

FALL Hair Tips
Fall is here, and as most women of color may know, coils, curls, color, and cold air do not comply, so we must find ways to sustain the health of our natural hair with cooler temperatures. A good DIY deep conditioning hair mask routine is one of the keys to maintaining hair moisture. This routine should be done after your weekly shampoo, but some may find it more convenient to do it bi-weekly. Whichever works best for you, ensure you are consistent and thorough each time. Another great tip for maintaining healthy hair is scalp treatment! The hair follicle is what promotes growth and is found underneath our scalp. To penetrate the follicles, we must massage our scalps with natural oils such as Vitamin E, coconut, rosemary, jojoba, and other oils that promote hair growth. This can be done after your deep conditioning on damp or dry hair. One last important tip would be to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drink plenty of water! Acceleration of hair loss comes from dehydration, and just like our bodies, our hair needs daily hydration to ensure that all properties are functioning correctly, effectively, and collectively. The absence of H2O in the hair creates scalp dryness and may cause it to stop growing. Hair care routines are easy to create but often hard to keep up with, and as a stylist, I understand the importance of creating convenience for those who may be struggling. Deevine Hair Therapy (DHT)provides a one-stop shop for all hair textures and is ready to assist with caring for your crown! Fall back in love with your hair this season!
