marking 50 years of continuous publication. Over the last half-century the journal has evolved in tandem with developments and innovations in the industry, not just reflecting those changes but also helping to promote them and spearhead their acceptance. Right from the outset Building Services News has been an integral part of Ireland’s building services industry and not just a magazine serving the sector. Publisher and Editor Pat Lehane sits on the executive of most of the industry professional and trade representative bodies and the journal has been instrumental in the establishment of many of these organisations. In addition, Building Services News plays a major role in promoting and facilitating cross-over activity between these bodies, and provides secretariat support and accommodation addresses for many. It also guides and champions many industry causes, coordinating joint activities into lobbying and petitioning groups to act on behalf of the industry as a whole. Building Services News provides the industry with saturation coverage of the building services sector. It is available in three formats – the print edition which is posted directly to individually-named industry personnel; the web edition, which is freely available to all; and the Facebook page, which is inter-linked with the web edition. To all of you participating with us in this celebratory golden anniversary edition we say thank you. A small number of you have been dealing with the publication since day one, while many others have been trading partners for a considerable number of years. Of course there are also those of you who have

joined us in recent years. In marking the occasion our collective vision should, and is, on the future. In perusing the archives spanning 50 years we now realise how lucky we are to be part of such a vibrant, dynamic industry sector. In the early days the role of building services was perhaps under-rated by society in general. Today, that has changed. Rising energy costs, a demand for more comfortable home and working environments, and a genuine sense of social responsibility in respect of the environment has put building services centre stage. What an opportunity – the future for the industry is bright and secure! However, commercial success is only part of the story. The building services sector is also very much about people, and about a work/social interactive balance. We have been lucky to have made many friends down through the years. Sadly, some of them are no longer with us. We dedicate this issue to their memory. Pat and Joe

‘Recognising our responsibilities as industrialists, we will devote ourselves to the progress and development of society and the well-being of people through our business activities, thereby enhancing the quality of life throughout the world.’

A world of heating and cooling products With more than 50 years experience, selling to more than 120 countries around the world, Panasonic is unquestionably one of the market leaders in the heating and cooling sector. The brand has been represented in Ireland since the early 1990s but Panasonic established its own wholly-owned operation in 2011 with Vincent Mahony at the helm as General Manager, and Tony Duffy in charge of service and technical support. Panasonic Ireland offers an extensive range of innovative, cutting-edge products that deliver turn-key heating and air conditioning solutions for homes, commercial offices, leisure

facilities, restaurants, etc. They offer optimum performance, maximum efficiencies, excellent energy savings, long-life operation and regulations/standards compliance. In heating there are the standard units, along with high-temperature units and of course T-Cap that delivers 100% heating in ambient temperatures down to -15ºC. On the air conditioning front there are room air conditioners, heat recovery units, commercial splits, VRF (electric) and the unique Panasonic gas heat pump (GHP). These are made available through a strategically-appointed dealer network that

guarantees local service on a national 32-county basis. Dealers’ engineers undergo comprehensive and regular training programmes to keep them up-to-date with the latest technological developments, and to advise them of the various innovations set to come down the line. “We’ve made significant marketshare inroads over the last four years”, says General Manager Vincent Mahony, “and now look forward with confidence to the future. We’ve got a very strong product line-up at present, and some very exciting ranges in the pipeline. That, coupled with the strength of our dealer partnership, augurs extremely well for the future”. ‘Human conditioning’ There is a close relationship between R&D innovation and good manufacturing processes, and so Panasonic has placed its R&D facilities very close to its manufacturing bases. This ensures good integration between all divisions to deliver high-quality and reliable solutions to the market. Underpinning this approach is a philosophy based not on “conditioning” buildings but on “comfort conditioning for people”. Panasonic calls it Human Conditioning (HC). This is the process that guides its technology and system attributes and, in turn, provides for maximum conditioning solutions for all environments.

Panasonic’s PRO Club is an initiative open to all professionals involved in the heating and cooling sector. It has a dedicated web link – www.panasonicproclub.com – providing distributors, installers, engineers and specifiers with a direct communication channel to Panasonic support. The site contains a wealth of information from the latest versions of Panasonic’s Aquarea and Etherea Design Software, to technical documentation, catalogues and images for the company’s wide range of heating and cooling systems. Also, registered users can access news regarding special promotions, along with helpful business advice.

Panasonic sustainable smart town Panasonic’s vision is to become a Green Innovation Company, achieving both business growth and environmental contributions. As part of its efforts to make this vision a reality, it is now promoting the development of Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town. In this project the idea is to build the town by designing spaces with a primary focus on people’s lifestyles and the creation of an optimal smart infrastructure. By bringing energy to life for residents as the core town concept, Panasonic will provide services that enhance people’s lives with photovoltaic power, security, mobility, community and healthcare. Once completed, the Fijisawa SST project, where as many as 1,000 families will live, will serve as a new business model both within Japan and throughout the world.

Mitsubishi Electric – looking forward to a green future Mitsubishi Electric has a strong heritage in Ireland going back over 30 years. However, rather than dwell on its phenomenal success to date, it has just unveiled a strategic development plan that is strongly focused on the next 30 years. Over the past 12 months the company has been completely restructured to take full advantage of the vast resources at its disposal. An influx of young, highly-qualified personnel has energised all aspects of its operations, making for a progressive and dynamic team. Key personnel are now established in regional teams to ensure nationwide coverage and comprehensive customer/client support at local level. When Mitsubishi Electric relocated to its headquarters at Westgate Business Park in Ballymount in Dublin in 1992, it was a purposebuilt, state-of-the art building. However, it too has received an overhaul to reflect the needs and requirements of customers.

Apart from offices and warehousing, there is a new Training Centre incorporating a lecture theatre and workshop-type facilities. These feature fully-functioning examples of the company’s air conditioning units and control systems. There is also a new boardroom conference suite equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and this is an ideal set-up for strategic meetings. Then of course there is the unique product portfolio. It caters for three very distinct market segments – air conditioning, heating and factory automation. Once again the emphasis is on solutions for the present and the future with innovative products and systems very much to the forefront. These developments clearly illustrate that Mitsubishi Electric Ireland is firmly set on strengthening, consolidating and growing its market-leading status for the foreseeable future.

Training and Education Baxi Potterton Myson runs a continuous programme of seminars and practical workshops for installers, not just on the company’s own products and systems, but also covering advancements in technology and compliance with industry-related standards and regulations. “We conducted extensive research with installers throughout Ireland”, says Vincent Broderick, Sales Director, “and this confirmed for us that practical training given by quality trainers is what heating installers want most. Hence the significant investment in our purpose-designed training centre, and the continuous programme of installer training seminars and workshops. “That said, we view training as a two-way process. Feedback from installers during training sessions contributes to the business cases that support new innovations in heating and hot water solutions. This ensures that products in development in the BDR Thermea R&D pipeline are the most efficient and cost-effective solutions for the Irish marketplace.

From the efficiency of compressors and inverter technology to the latest advances in refrigerants and product design for seasonal efficiency, Daikin is at the very forefront of energy efficiency and innovation.

Pioneering climate comfort solutions on the back of technological innovation Daikin celebrates three important milestones this year – 90 years since the company was originally founded in Japan, just over 40 years since Daikin Europe NV was registered, and the imminent 10th anniversary since Daikin Ireland was established. Daikin has enjoyed marketleading status in Ireland for many years and it was to better serve its ever-expanding business that the wholly-owned Irish operation was established in 2006. Under the stewardship of General Manager John Valentine, Daikin Ireland has experienced consistent year-on-year growth in recent years. Now that the outlook is brighter, the company is gearing up for significant growth into the future by taking on additional employees and adding to the scope of the product portfolio. integrated solutions. From the efficiency of compressors and inverter technology to the latest advances in refrigerants and product design for seasonal efficiency, Daikin is at the very forefront of the sector. Just last year Daikin won the Institute of Refrigeration Environmental Award for its Convenipac and Zeas refrigeration systems installed at Tesco’s store in Camden Street, Dublin. Daikin’s refrigeration range offers energy efficient condensing units with a small footprint producing very low noise levels. The Convenipac system is unique in the manner in which the hot gas from the fridge can be reused for heat through the air conditioning system instead of dumping this heat outside. Daikin’s portfolio comprises innovative, premium-quality indoor climate management solutions to meet the changing needs of residential, commercial and industrial customers. Primary market segments served are air conditioning, heating, applied systems and refrigeration. The engineering excellence of the products is complemented and supported by the design and engineering capabilities of Daikin Ireland personnel. All are fully-qualified, highlyexperienced and undergo an intensive series of regular educational and training modules to ensure full competency on emerging technologies and product innovations. Taken together, these combined strengths make for a formidable force and one that will continue to enjoy market-leading status well into the future.

Seasonally efficient design

Awards Recognition

Daikin is leading the industry drive for “seasonal efficiency” as the method to rate heating and cooling products based on their energy efficiency calculated over an entire year. Seasonal efficiency is an initiative of the EU’s Energy Related Products Directive (the so-called Eco-design Directive) and specifies the minimum Eco-design requirements that manufacturers must integrate into their energy-using products. All Daikin products are designed for seasonal efficiency. That makes them more energy efficient while, at the same time, emitting fewer CO2 emissions. The new Seasonal Efficiency energy labeling indicates the energy efficiency of the product from A+, A, B etc. It also states the sound emissions of the unit.

Refrigerants – leading by example Daikin has already introduced equipment that uses R32 and additional products using the gas will come on stream during the coming year. It also advises customers to take account of indirect CO2 emissions generated during the total lifecycle of a product, and not just the GWP of the refrigerant.

Daikin has won many prestigious industry awards down through the years, one of the latest being the RAC Heat Pump Product of the Year Award 2014 for the Altherma hybrid heat pump. This innovative unit is a hybrid heat pump which is a combination of a high efficiency gas combi boiler and renewable energy air-to-water heat pump. The heat pump and gas boiler work in series with the most efficient heat source kicking in depending on the operating mode. High temperature and low temperature options are available to suit all kinds and sizes of properties. Latest addition to the range is the Altherma Flex Type, a unique new heat pump solution for apartment buildings and collective housing.

Daikin split system unit

VRV Pioneers Daikin first invented the revolutionary Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) technology in 1982. Since then it has continued to lead the way and is now developing its fourth generation of VRV systems, delivering the ultimate in climate comfort, energy efficiency and control. Breakthrough innovations such as VRV heat recovery systems have enhanced comfort and versatility even further by recovering heat extracted from the cooling process to deliver free heat for hot water and air curtains. Today the latest VRV solutions provide year-round heating, cooling, ventilation and hot water, as well as open-door air curtains and user-friendly controls for all kinds of commercial and community buildings.

MHI partners with Diamond Air CELEBRATING 1964-2014

MHI has always had a strong presence in Ireland but, to further consolidate that position and to expand market penetration into the future, Diamond Air Conditioning was appointed its distributor in early October 2014.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) was founded in 1884 and today has 80,583 employees worldwide, annual sales of over €24 billion, and a portfolio of products ranging from air conditioning to aerospace, and from power systems to ship building. MHI manufactures more than 700 different product ranges for various industrial and civil markets across the world, and has a long history in the design and manufacture of refrigeration systems since 1920. Down through the years MHI has introduced many industry firsts such as the first wall mounted unit in 1978, and the first ceiling mounted cassette type in 1979, both of which are now among the most common products in the European market. It has always had a strong focus on research and development and this has led to the introduction of highly-sophisticated and technologically-advanced air

conditioning products and systems on a continuous basis down through the years. Early in 2013 MHI created a new European subsidiary, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air Conditioning Europe Ltd (MHIAE), to manage all MHI’s HVAC solutions across Europe. The establishment of the new company has strengthened MHI's position in the European marketplace and will support the European distributor base even better into the future. MHI has always had a strong presence in Ireland but, to further consolidate that position and to expand market penetration in the future, Diamond Air Conditioning was appointed its distributor in early October 2014. New online humidifier selector from Condair Condair, formerly known as JS Humidifiers, has introduced an innovative new website, www.condair.co.uk, with features including an online product selector tool and psychrometric calculator. The online product selector guides users who want to select a humidifier through a series of multiple choice questions. As the user progresses through the selection criteria, a shortlist of humidification systems is presented and refined, depending on the user’s requirements, until finally an ideal humidifier or shortlist of products is suggested for the user’s project.

The online product selector takes into account many factors such as available energy supplies, budget, type of application, in-room or in-duct humidification and desired level of energy consumption. Psychrometric calculator For users who want to know what size humidification system they need for a project, the Condair website’s psychrometric calculator will provide a humidity load in kg/h. The user simply needs to input certain environmental parameters of the project, for either in-room or in-duct humidity control, and the calculator

Grundfos is a global leader in advanced pump solutions and a trendsetter in water technology. It contributes to global sustainability by pioneering technologies that improve quality of life for people and care for the planet.

Demand Grundfos iSolutions for a better environment Grundfos pumps have been available in Ireland since the rural electrification of the late 1950s, first through a distributor but then from a wholly-owned subsidiary established in 1984. Down through the years the operation has grown considerably in tandem with its everincreasing market share and today represents a 25-strong, engineering-led team of specialists. The age profile is quite mixed with newlyqualified, dynamic engineers working very closely with experienced personnel who have in excess of 25 years service with the company. They in turn work very closely with a network of approved mechanical services providers and leading merchant outlets to bring an expansive range of pumping solutions

to clients. The products and systems that make up these solutions incorporate pioneering technologies that ensure optimum performance while being sustainable and energy efficient. While much has been made of the introduction of the ErP Directive in relation to pumps in January 2013, Grundfos had anticipated these legislative changes well in advance. Its current portfolio represents a diverse range of products and systems that have already taken the strengths and values of traditional pump technology and moved them into the digital age. So, irrespective of the scale of the project or the application involved, Grundfos has the answer.

Econet

ReCOOLER HP

The components in Fläkt Woods’ innovative Econet system are connected together to provide a more reliable and more efficient AHU system. Heat recovery, heating and cooling are all integrated into a common circuit as heating/cooling coils, pumps, valves, pipe systems, insulation, etc. The result is a shorter and more compact ventilation unit. This is highly beneficial from an environmental point of view as much less energy is used to transport the air through unnecessary components. Further development of the principle of energy recovery has also led to increases in efficiency of 80% compared with traditional coil recovery systems. The standard Econet can achieve this figure.

ReCOOLER HP is a major breakthrough in comfort and energy efficiency comprising reversible heat pump and energy recovery wheel technology in one innovative unit. Being part of the Flakt Woods eQ range of air handling units, it offers total energy recovery with integrated DX heating and cooling. All components and controls come in the one unit and there is no need for a chiller, condenser, boiler or pipework. This makes for simple “plug-and-play” installation. With an EER up to 10.9, the ReCOOLER HP provides BREEAM credit for a low environmental impact. Plus, with COPs of 6.5, it delivers all year ‘round energy recovery.

New user-friendly website Flakt Woods has just unveiled its new, user-friendly website. While comprehensive and covering all elements of the company’s activities, it is nonetheless simple to navigate. Apart from the obvious sections dealing with air comfort and fire safety solutions, and the product category breakdowns, the support centre section contains invaluable information and guidance for design consultants, installers and property owners. There is also a selection tools icon link, along with links to advice on legislation and certification.

Pumping solutions for all types of applications When Wilo SE chose Limerick as the location for its first manufacturing facility outside of Germany in 1980, it was a declaration of confidence in the ready availability of an educated, engineering-based workforce. Now, 35 years later, that leap of faith has been truly vindicated as Wilo Pumps continues to thrive as a key manufacturing plant of the German pump giant. Meanwhile sister company Wilo Ireland, the sales arm of the business, looks after the Irish market from bases in Dublin and Limerick. Originally a volume producer of domestic

circulators, Wilo Pumps is still exclusively export-oriented but today specialises in highend energy-efficient products from the company’s extensive portfolio. Wilo Ireland is also celebrating 35 years and it is notable that long service is a feature of the Wilo set-up with quite a number of personnel having been with the company for 10, 15 and 25 plus years. It is this unique mix of continuity and experience, coupled with extensive research and development, that ensures the continuous introduction of innovative pumping solutions for all types of applications.

Mueller Europe – world’s largest producer of copper tube Mueller Europe is the world’s leading producer of copper tube for the heating and plumbing market. It has always had a presence in Ireland but, with the appointment of Conor Lennon as sole agent for the Republic of Ireland in 2012, it has since emerged as the principal supplier of copper to the Irish marketplace. Distribution is strictly via its nationwide merchant network with individual outlets kept replenished by the ready availability of extensive stocks held in the Dublin premises of its specialist logistics partner Cronin Movers. Mueller Europe has undertaken a massive capital investment programme at its Bilston manufacturing plant to create the most

sophisticated and fully-integrated copper tube production facility in Europe. Just on €40 million was spent on new machinery and modernising the plant and its operations, with a further €3 million invested in a new coiled pipe line. This allows coil or continuously-drawn straight lengths to be produced in diameters between 6mm to 28mm, providing an in-line plastic coating, drawing, cutting and bundling facility to the coiled line. Mueller Europe’s plain straight-length tube is made to IS EN 1057-R250, while plain and plastic coated coils to IS EN 1057-R220 carry the Quality Mark of the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI). 25-year guarantee Mueller Europe offers an unprecedented 25-year guarantee. Records show that there is less than one chance in a million of a failure occurring in its products that can be directly attributed to a manufacturing fault.

Copper best for environment An independent survey commissioned by Mueller Europe revealed that most householders, and installers, prefer copper tube. It provides a comfort factor for homeowners because of the way that it is fitted through soldering, and because of its durability and very long lifespan. Copper is also seen as the safest in the face of weather extremes.

Both householders and installers alike cited the importance of the recyclability of copper. To help boost the recyclability of the material even further, Mueller Europe has invested in equipment that strips off the polyethylene coating that protects copper tubing from environments which could be harmful to the material when installed for hot and cold water services, gas services, sanitation and central heating.

Understanding LED

LED Store strengths

LED Store will help you better understand the principles behind LED lighting. It will explain to you the exciting potential it presents, not just for aesthetic and comfort “white light” levels, but also the infinite colour-changing options it entails. This education theme is replicated on the vibrant LED Store website where dynamic and exciting videos, couched in easy-tounderstand terminology, bring LED technology, and its huge potential, to life. Whether you are a designer, specifier, contractor or end-user, LED Store is a must- visit destination.

LED Neon-Flex

What is Led Lighting? LED lamps are solid-state lamps that use light-emitting diodes as the light source. While the initial costs are higher than fluorescent and incandescent lamps, LEDs have longer life, high energy efficiency and offer an infinite variety of lighting and colour-changing options. LED lighting is also extremely flexible in that it can be configured for all manner of external and internal lighting applications.

Driver-free LED In the early days LED lighting comprised two elements – the actual fitting and the driver required to change the DC current to AC. If failures occurred it was often down to the driver failure rather than the actual LED. That problem is now a thing of the past with the advent of the latest innovation in LED technology that has seen the driver replaced by a computer chip that is integrated into the LED fitting.

Infinite lighting possibilities LED Store represents an Aladdin’s Cave of lighting that highlights the infinite possibilities the latest LED innovations have to offer. The technology is now so advanced that the only limitation lies in people’s imaginations. LED Store aims to break that limitation by exposing all industry sectors to the full potential of LED. Major contract in Dammam Saudi Arabia

The Difference is…. People

Standard Control Systems has secured a major contract with Jones Engineering Ltd to provide a sophisticated BEMS to the Saudi International Petrochemical Company in Dammam, near the east coast of Saud Arabia. It has worked closely on the detailed design of the system with both Jones Engineering and Mott MacDonald in Dublin. The company is delighted with this additional contract as, in the words of senior management “it further consolidates our position in the region”.

Standard Control Systems believes that, to remain market leader in this industry, it’s ALL about people and this is why the company has developed an unrivalled level of trust with its clients. Director Sean O’Toole says: “We’re often asked to provide solutions and we find our customers are less concerned about the systems we use and more about the fact that we have the in-house know-how to get the job done. To sustain this we continually invest in our personnel. There is always at least one staff member on an internal or external training course, while we also run weekly training courses in our new training facility in Dublin”.

Sean O’Toole, Director, Standard Controls Systems

Ligo lighting control system Standard Control Systems also supplies the ground-breaking LIGO lighting control systems. This system is designed to interface with BEMS systems, if required. Alternatively, it can fully function as a stand-alone system with access via a standard Internet browser.

Project Management The company has now grown to in excess of 50 people, with seven full-time Contracts Managers harnessing the expertise within the in-house Design Team and the Pre-Commissioning and Commissioning teams.

The lighting control system provides control and integration of all DALI control components that make up the system, including ballasts, emergency ballasts, intelligent sensors, PIR and light level, and switches and scene plates.

2010

Euro Gas – celebrating 30 years serving building services This year marks the 30th anniversary of Euro Gas Ltd, a company founded in 1985 by Pat Curran to distribute Schwank Radiant tube heaters. Within two years Rendamax was added to the range, making the company the first to introduce condensing boilers to Ireland. In 1988 Des Prendergast joined Pat and together they laid the foundation for what is now one of the leading mechanical services suppliers in the country with a large portfolio of leading brands (see opposite page). In the late nineties Martin Garvey joined as Sales Director and Jimmy Sadlier as Financial Director, giving the company the broad range of technical and financial experience necessary to achieve its key objectives. Martin Garvey succeeded Des as Managing Director in 2013. In 1999 a sister-company called Pak Plant Ltd was established, under the stewardship of Denis O’Keeffe, to serve the growing requirement for customised off-site project solutions. Today the

packaged plant room concept is firmly established and is widely seen as the preferred method of construction for many situations. The most recent company development was the acquisition of Sermet (NI) Ltd in 2014 to strengthen its position in the Northern Ireland market. From the outset Euro Gas Ltd saw mechanical consultants and contractors as its main customer base and set about a “hands on approach” in the provision of technical excellence in advice, product and designed solutions to its customers. It has continuously recruited technicallyexperienced and customer-focussed personnel, as well as developing its own young dynamic sales and service team. This commitment to quality products, marketleading brands and quality service has remained steadfast and, apart from underpinning its success to date, is the foundation upon which all future success will be built.

The range includes hardwired and wireless products, and comprises a mix of own and market-leading brands from some of the world’s foremost manufacturers.

Chronotherm Controls Celebrates Silver Jubilee Chronotherm Controls Ltd celebrates 25 years this year as a specialist in heating controls for domestic and semi-commercial applications. Solutions provided satisfy both comfort and energy-efficiency requirements, in addition to helping clients meet building regulations and to achieve higher BER ratings. The company was founded by Tom Noone in 1989. He has a total of 40 years experience in the industry, the early years of which were spent with the family business Heatovent. Throughout that time he has introduced renowned brands and product innovations to Ireland, something which he continues to do today.

Tom Noone, Managing Director

As a technology-led company Chronotherm Controls has a wealth of experience across all industry sectors with highly-qualified inhouse staff capable of resolving virtually any controls application. It channels the expertise, design and technical support of its suppliers to its customers, thereby strengthening the trading partnership between all concerned. This includes regular educationals and demonstrations on the use of the products for both wholesale staff and installers. Tom also recommends that both heating and electrical contractors should attend one of the many excellent training courses available to installers with a view to obtaining a better understanding of the operation and interaction of heating controls. Attending an accredited training course and/or a quick phone call to the supplier can prevent most problems. If we don’t ask the questions we cannot learn. In addition to market-leading brands from world-renowned manufacturers, Chronotherm also has an expansive range of own-brand controls (see panel right). The strength of this product portfolio, combined with the experience and engineering expertise of all personnel, means that Chronotherm has a solution to cater for every project size and type, be it a domestic, industrial or commercial application, wired or wireless.
