Celebrating the oliday, H

Baltimore Style By Maria Blackburn

BALTIMORE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS are a quirky lot. Some, like the elaborately detailed Christmas train gardens that grace basements, malls and fire departments each December, are ubiquitous. Others, like the gazillion lights bedecking the row homes on Hampden’s 34th Street, are crazily elaborate. And then there are the traditions defying categorization. Kicking off the season by lighting, not a Christmas tree, but a downtown monument dedicated to George Washington? The annual all-tuba Christmas carol concert at the Inner Harbor? Serving sauerkraut alongside roasted turkey? You get the picture.

In 2004, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra rolled out Holiday Spectacular, a music and dance-filled extravaganza celebrating the delights of the season, Baltimore style. Santa doesn’t just whoosh down the chimney, he kicks in a chorus line. The reindeer pulling the man-in-red’s sleigh aren’t penned up on stage, they dash through the audience. In just six years, the show has become as much a part of Baltimore in December as lighted boat parades and New Year’s Eve fireworks. “It’s already a tradition,” says BSO piccolo player Laurie Sokoloff, who has played in the show every year. “Everybody who comes just loves it and talks about looking forward to coming back again.”

Overture

To mark the BSO Holiday Spectacular’s sixth anniversary, here are a half-dozen reasons why the show is a Baltimore holiday tradition that’s here to stay.

R

eason 1: It’s for everyone.

Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, a nonprofit that promotes the city. “And it’s even more of a party when you can celebrate in the community with your friends and neighbors.”

R

eason 3: It’s dynamic.

Whether it’s decorating the tree or baking cookies, the best holiday traditions are the ones that get everyone involved. That’s why every year for Christmas, Claire Holmes and Aline Hauber give their parents, Ed and Stella Holmes, tickets to a Saturday matinee of Holiday Spectacular. It’s an homage to the trips to the symphony and the theater they experienced as children. It’s also the gift of family. Dressed in their Sunday finery, the collection of 12 grandparents, parents, cousins, aunts and uncles ranging in age from 8 to 71, sits in two short rows at the Meyerhoff. Nana always sits in the middle of the children, smiling from ear to ear. “The Holiday Spectacular has always been a multigenerational tradition for us,” explains Claire Holmes, who lives in Towson. “It’s nice to put everything else aside and have time in the middle of a Saturday afternoon, when the rest of the world is running around crazy, to be together and enjoy the same holiday concert experience.”

Traditions like Hampden’s Miracle on 34th Street may occur every year, but the reason people return time and again is to see what sort of new light displays residents create. The same is true with the Holiday Spectacular. This year’s new additions include Liberace impersonator Martin Preston and a glitzy production number celebrating the holidays Las Vegas-style. Unwilling to spoil any surprises, BSO operations manager Alicia Lin is mum on the details. “There will be showgirls,” she confirms. In addition, dog trainer Tony Hoard brings his crew of talented Australian Shepherds to the Meyerhoff this year. The dogs, which have been featured on “America’s Got Talent” and “Good Morning America,” will perform with the BSO. “This is a first,” Lin says. “We’ve never had a four-footed star in the holiday show before.”

R

The holidays are also about anticipating certain events that don’t change, like the Holiday Festival of Trains at the B&O Railroad Museum. That’s why there are two acts in the show, Santa Tap and the dramatization of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” that remain constant, no matter what. “Holiday traditions are fun, familiar and something you look forward to,” Lin says. “That’s how it is with Santa Tap and ‘Twas. I can’t imagine the show without either one.”

eason 2: It’s fun.

Familiar holiday music? Check. Lavish costumes? Check. Songs and banter from past hosts like Sandy Patty, Ann Hampton Callaway and this year’s host, Broadway actress and singer Maureen McGovern? Check. All of these are important to the Holiday Spectacular, but perhaps the show’s most critical component is its fun factor. There’s a spirit to the production that cannot be denied. And it’s so infectious it’s spilling out into the community as BSO musicians and tap-dancing Santas from the Spectacular are joining in such long-standing city traditions as the Washington Monument lighting in Mount Vernon and Santa Claus’ arrival at the Inner Harbor. “Baltimoreans love a party,” says Michael Evitts, communications director for

R

eason 4: And yet, it’s familiar.

Overture

R

eason 5: It’s nostalgic.

The word tradition means something that’s been handed down. However, many of the traditions we associate with the holiday, such as Santa Claus’ red suit, were actually invented not too long ago, according to Joseph J.Walsh, a history and classics professor at Loyola University Maryland and the author of Were They Wise Men or Kings:The Book of Christmas Questions.“Our feelings, not time or history, determine what we consider traditions,” he says.“Something satisfies a nostalgic hunger and evokes a particular feeling of authenticity, and so we come to regard it as a tradition.” Courtney Spears, a junior at Baltimore School for the Arts, was only a few days into her freshman year when she learned from classmates about the tradition of BSA dancers participating in the Holiday Spectacular. She auditioned and appeared in the 2009 show as one of 20 tap-dancing, high-kicking Santas. Perfecting the routine while wearing the Santa costume was no easy feat, but it’s an experience Spears treasures.“It was exhilarating,” the 16-year-old says of performing onstage at the Meyerhoff. “I’m hoping to do it again this year.”

R

eason 6: It’s over the top.

Longtime Baltimore Sun reporter Jacques Kelly starts getting ready for the holidays as early as July. There’s his traditional Christmas garden of trains and scenes to plan and build, fruitcake to bake and age, sauerkraut to make.“Traditions have to have a lot of warmth and a lot of thought,” the Baltimore native says.“They have to make other people feel good and they have to make you feel good. All that takes time.” The Holiday Spectacular, which involves more than 100 musicians, dancers and singers, is a major effort that also requires months of planning. In fact, BSO administrators start meeting to map out the next year’s show before the run of this year’s show is even complete. Why do they do it? “Just being able to provide an experience to our audience that’s become a tradition in Baltimore, that’s important to us and it’s important to the orchestra,” Lin says. Sokoloff agrees. “I can’t ever remember doing one of these shows without seeing a standing ovation or a long ovation at the end,” she says.“Our audience makes it obvious to us that they are having a wonderful time.”

With her inaugural concerts in September 2007, she became the first woman to head a major American orchestra. She also holds the title of conductor emeritus at the Bournemouth Symphony in the United Kingdom, where she served as the principal conductor from 2002 to 2008, and is music director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in California. In 2005, Ms. Alsop was named a MacArthur Fellow, the first conductor ever to receive this prestigious award. In 2007, she was honored with a European Women of Achievement Award; in 2008, she was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; and in 2009, Musical America named her “Conductor of the Year.” A regular guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic, Ms. Alsop also appears frequently as a guest conductor with some of the most distinguished orchestras around the world. In addition to her performance activities, she is also an active recording artist with award-winning cycles of Brahms, Barber and Dvorˇák orchestral works. Ms. Alsop attended Yale University and received her master’s degree from The Juilliard School. In 1989, her conducting career was launched when she won the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize at Tanglewood, where she studied with Leonard Bernstein. 16

The Legato Circle In 1986, the Board of Directors of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra established The Legato Circle in recognition of those individuals who have notified the BSO of a planned gift, including gifts through estate plans or life-income arrangements. Bequests and planned gifts are the greatest source of security for the BSO’s future. The Symphony depends on lasting gifts such as these to help fund our diverse musical programs and activities. Members of The Legato Circle play a vital and permanent role in the Symphony’s future. If you have named the BSO in your estate plans, please contact Joanne Rosenthal at 410-783-8010 or jrosenthal@bsomusic.org to join the Legato Circle. We gratefully acknowledge the following Donors who have included the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in their Estate Plans.

HOURS AFTER PERFORMING in the final concert of this year’s Holiday Spectacular on Dec. 19, Assistant Principal Trumpet Rene Hernandez will be off like a flash to embark on his favorite holiday tradition. No, he won’t be at the mall buying last-minute gifts or decking the halls with his wife Silva and their 5-year-old daughter Tehya. In fact, he won’t even be in the country. Instead, Hernandez will be in Milan, Italy, with his wife and daughter visiting his in-laws for the holidays and learning the finer points of cooking like an Italian. “The main thing I look forward to is being with family,” says Hernandez, a native of San Diego, Calif., who met his violinist wife more than a decade ago when they both played in the Milan Symphony. Silva Boletini-Hernandez is now a freelance violinist who has played with regional orchestras, including those in Delaware and Annapolis, and the BSO. The trip offers Hernandez a chance to recharge his batteries and devote some time to his other main passion beside music: food. Over

impromptu

the last few years, the accomplished home cook has picked up pointers on making such authentic dishes as Pasta alla Bottarga (Pasta with dried, cured fish roe) and Cotoletta alla Milanese (“sort of like Italian Wiener Schnitzel,” he explains.) The biggest lesson he’s learned? “The food is simple. It’s all about having the best ingredients.” It’s also all about the way that food brings family and friends together. Hernandez recalls spending New Year’s Eve with his family at a friend’s apartment in Milan last year and sharing a dish of seafood pasta. After dinner they went out on the balcony to admire the Duomo di Milano, the city’s architectural masterpiece, glowing brightly against the evening sky. At midnight they stood in the cold night air and toasted the New Year with champagne. There was no place he would rather be, he says. “It was perfect.” — Maria Blackburn
