Welcome to the 2017/18 season of BSO concerts in Exeter Whether you’re new to a live symphony orchestra or a seasoned concert-goer, the variety of world-class performances on offer by the BSO hold opportunities for fantastic evenings out. There are performances of core classical repertoire by Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms; 20th Century masterpieces including Britain’s favourite, The Lark Ascending; and some lesser-known works if you like exploring new pieces. In addition, we have a concert of famous excerpts of Smooth Classics; a Christmas Proms to get you into the festive spirit; a glamorous New Year Gala with waltzes galore; and our popular Heroes & Monsters film night with big scores from the movies.

Two familiar pieces to open the concert season; the Hebrides, better known as Fingal’s Cave, paints a superb picture of a remote Scottish cave, while the Eroica is one of Beethoven’s most famous symphonies – for its groundbreaking music as well as the crossed-out dedication to Napoleon in the original score! Mozart’s last Violin Concerto completes a performance of classical melodies at their best.

This all-French evening – both in choice of music and artists – culminates in Debussy’s elegantly flowing masterpiece of Impressionism, following a journey through the composer’s youthful exploration of spring time, a visit to an enchanted forest with elves and knights, and a piano concerto written by master of the instrument, Chopin – dazzling, virtuosic and simply enthralling.

Reminding us of the soothing power of music at times of loss and heartache, this is a concert of deeply moving works. Britain’s favourite piece of classical music, The Lark Ascending live in concert is simply stunning. It is framed by two beautiful works dealing with the sadness of the Great War – a memorial to friends, and to a world lost forever.

Relax and unwind in a concert of some of the most beautiful classical music ever written especially selected for a sublime evening, including the Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, Dance of the Blessed Spirits, Clair de Lune as well as excerpts from the New World Symphony, Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto and Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony.

The popular Paganini Rhapsody completes an evening of virtuosic performance!

Two top singers join Pete Harrison and the full Orchestra for a selection of showstopping hits from Broadway and the West End, as well as seasonal classics old and new including I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day, Chestnuts Roasting, Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree, Santa Baby and many more – all wrapped up with a sprinkling of BSO magic and sparkle!

Celebrate the New Year with an uplifting selection of waltzes, marches, polkas and arias by the King of Waltz, Johann Strauss and his contemporaries! The full symphonic forces of the BSO will be joined by outstanding soprano, Rhian Lois to bring you an afternoon of swirling melodies and carry you away into the glamour and sparkle of Viennese Dance Halls. Pieces include the Fledermaus Overture, waltzes from Der Rosenkavalier, Tritsch-Tratsch Polka, Emperor Waltz and, of course, The Blue Danube!

An evening of fantastic romantic melodies begins with the lyrical Adagio from Spartacus, used in many a love scene and famously in The Onedin Line, before moving on to the Piano Concerto with its sublime and hauntingly beautiful slow Andante and the vivacious, fun outer movements. The brilliant finale of the concert features one of the most popular works by the master of melody, Tchaikovsky.

Two weighty pieces make for an evening of deep symphonic emersion. Brahms’ First Piano Concerto is a spectacular tour the force for soloist as well as orchestra. The Ukrainian composer Lyatoshinsky is relatively unknown in the West, yet this symphony reminds of the film scores to swashbuckling 1950’s Hollywood dramas – full of emotion, the music sometimes gritty, sometimes poetic.

Once again the full power of a symphony orchestra is unleashed in a concert packed full of stirring and epic soundtracks of the silver screen – this time featuring music from films with monsters galore, whether they be prehistoric dinosaurs, giant beasts from the jungle or the deep, supernatural creatures of the night or psychopathic killers. Other titles include The Mummy, Silence of the Lambs, King Kong, Super 8, The Abyss, Pan’s Labyrinth, Jaws and Gremlins .

The New World Symphony with its numerous well-known melodies holds a special claim to fame as the underlying music to Britain’s favourite TV advert – remember the boy and his bike on Shaftesbury’s Golden Hill? The Cello Concerto is an audience favourite, its emotional depth and instrumental range making for an extraordinary concert experience, as personal a piece as the Wagner that preceeds it.

Exeter Cathedral is the perfect setting for the incredible Death and Transfiguration to end the season, a tone poem describing in the most luscious music the last hours of a dying man reflecting on a life lived and loved to the full. The Cello Concerto contains some of Dvorák’s most memorable melodies, while the Sea Interludes brilliantly describe the sea and its many faces.
