PREVENTING FIRE ALARMS The fire safety system on res is incredibly sensitive and directly linked to the fire brigade. The resident responsible for a fire unit(s) calls out shall be liable for the cost and in cases where no individual is identified the Residence manager reserves the right to apportion the cost across all the residents of the unit involved.
Please take care with the following to minimise disruption and to ensure everyone’s safety 1.
When cooking:
a. Open windows b. ALWAYS make sure the extractor fan is on by pulling out the range hood c. Cook on the back two burners when using a frypan. (When using the front two burners, the smoke is more likely to set off the alarm) d. Use a small amount of cooking spray, not oil.
4
2.
Do not use aerosol deodorant, hairspray or hair straighteners in your bedrooms. Only use these in the bathrooms of your units
3.
Do not smoke anywhere inside Village units or the MB building.
If a smoke alarm is set off, it will make a high pitch sound. You then have 60 seconds to attempt to disperse the smoke by: • Turning the appliance off (if applicable) • Opening windows • Putting extractor fan on • Fanning the detector with a tea towel, book or folder
DO NOT open front doors or bedroom doors as this is likely to result in triggering the hallway and bedroom detectors. If you are successful, the alarm will reset, the beeping will stop and the fire brigade will not be called.
If you are not successful in clearing the smoke, the system will go into full evacuation mode requiring the evacuation of all residents and triggering the automatic attendance of the fire brigade.
If ever you hear the evacuation tones, DO NOT assume it is a false alarm. You MUST VACATE IMMEDIATELY. The evacuation meeting points are: • Up on the grass out the front of Building LA (MB Students) • Gardener’s Creek (BSV Students)

Burwood Student Accommodation project
Dear BSV Residential Students Thank you for your continued patience during the construction of the new student residence. The following information outlines works scheduled for Burwood Student village. Power disruptions to BSV on Friday 6 November, between 8.30am-5pm. Works will be carried out by the Authorities and will affect power to all BSV blocks. Security access will not be affected as the doors to bedrooms will operate on battery. Arrangements have been made for facilities at MB to be accessible by affected BSV residences eg. Shared apartment for showers We recommend that all sensitive electrical appliances such as computers, entertainment units, DVD players etc be switched off at the power point before the interruption takes place, and switched back on once the electrical supply has been restored. Free meal Because of this disruption a free lunch will be offered to students on Friday the 6th November at the Diner (time details to come). 8
Study Room Even though exams are over, room EA 2.01 continues to be available as a quiet study space exclusive for residential students use. I encourage you to have a wander across and consider utilizing this room as an alternate to the library (please see map attached). For after-hours access please request a security escort to and from EA2.01 study room as you need. Thoughts/ Concerns/ feedback Please ensure you contact your RL with any questions or concerns you may have so they can collate and bring to weekly RL meetings so we can together come up with specific actions as needed. Again, if you observe a specific issue regarding any safety/ security with our current buildings or the new build work site, please do contact reception immediately so we can take action. While we will minimise the disruption as much as possible, thank you again for your patience and understanding during project works.
Kind regards, John Colley – General Manager Pamelia Thng – Project manager
