Annual Report 2016 / 2017

Blessed Trinity Catholic High School

Blessed Trinity Catholic High School exists to provide a nurturing educational environment that transforms lives in Christ, integrating spiritual formation, academic excellence, artistic sensibility, and athletic achievement.

From the Principal Dear Blessed Trinity Friends and Families, I want to sincerely thank you for being a vital part of our school community. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to complete many necessary projects in our school and on our campus to keep it operating safely and efficiently. Furthermore, our largest Annual Fund in years enabled us to continue to improve our facilities to better serve our students’ needs. As best practices in education continue to change, we transformed some of our existing spaces to greatly enhance the learning experience for our students. Of course, we will continue to work diligently to provide our students with the best we are capable of offering. As always, we will emphasize our Catholic identity, our academic rigor and support, and our extensive programs in both the fine arts and athletics, while continuing to promote service learning and providing an outstanding guidance program. There have been so many projects completed over the years, several of which have been made possible only because of your generous donations to the school. As you probably have come to expect, we have identified many more needs to address. There will be ongoing improvements to our technology throughout the school to stay ahead in that ever changing field. We want to put our students in the best possible position to be successful in and beyond college. Please read through this report. Recognize how so many people have contributed financially to help make Blessed Trinity Catholic High School one of the best Catholic high schools in the country. If your name does not appear on our donor list, please prayerfully consider a tax-deductible donation to the Annual Fund. Unfortunately, tuition dollars do not cover the total cost to educate a child. The Annual Fund helps us educate all of our students in the best way, and in the best environment we can provide. The Annual Fund is truly necessary to make a child’s educational experience significantly better in the present and in their future. Our students deserve all that we are able to provide for them. I pray that you will strongly consider contributing again, or for the first time, this year. May God bless you for all you do for Blessed Trinity Catholic High School. Sincerely,

Mr. Brian Marks Principal

From the Advancement Director Dear Blessed Trinity Supporters: Thank you to all who helped make the 2016-2017 school year such a financial success. Your contributions helped to fund many needs at Blessed Trinity. One that we are very excited about is the new Learning Commons. Please take a look at the photos on page four of this exciting new facility. The new STEAM classroom was also completed over the summer and will offer our students new opportunities to develop their skills in this emerging area of study. Your dollars helped to fund many other programs and facility improvements, but these were two of the most significant‌.. Thank you. Included in this Annual Report is a complete list of all donors who contributed to BT last year. Overall, almost 70% of the families with students at BT made a donation, and if you were one of those, we want to thank you. Financial gifts from our alumni and alumni families continue to grow, and we are most grateful for their continued support. As Principal Marks stated in his letter, if your name does not appear, we would ask that this year you prayerfully consider a donation of some amount to help Blessed Trinity stay at the forefront of a competitive educational market. As you read this report, please take a look at the testimonials from members of the faculty and staff as to why they support the Annual Fund. Last year, 97% of the Faculty and Staff made contributions. No one understands the need for these additional funds better than our faculty and staff in terms of having all the resources they need to provide our students the best education possible.‌.. Thank you. We are also excited about the completion of the new fine arts facility which will be used for set construction and much needed storage. The funds for this facility were provided through the recently completed Capital Campaign and fulfillment of those pledges. Overall giving to Blessed Trinity last year was $899,628, which was an increase of $201,125, or 28%, over the previous year. Unrestricted donations to the Annual Fund were $386,819, which was an increase of $87,935, or 29% more than the previous year. If you are considering a gift this year, this is the area where your dollars can have the most impact, as they can be used for any needs of the school. The Auction Gala saw an increase of 21% to $235,201, and we would like to thank Tricia Navarro and Donna Ortiz, the auction co-chairs, as well as their army of volunteers for making this happen. Once again, we want to thank everyone who helped make 2016 - 2017 school year such a success. From our faculty and staff, to our current families, alumni families, alumni, grandparents and corporate supporters, THANK YOU. Our ability to provide all the resources the students need to achieve their dreams is only limited by your willingness to support us through your generosity. In Christ, Chuck Oliver Director of Advancement

Learning Commons The media center got a complete makeover and will now be called the Learning Commons. The Learning Commons will provide space for our students to study individually or work collaboratively in small or large groups. The redesigned space will also allow more than one teacher to bring in a full class of students to work. This upgrade was made possible by your generous contributions to the Annual Fund.

Why I Give

I’m Dr. Jim Freeman, Latin teacher here at Blessed Trinity. I would like to say a few words to inspire you to support this year’s Annual Fund drive. For me, the greatest source of inspiration comes from our mission statement, to transform lives in Christ through spiritual formation, academic excellence, artistic sensibility and athletic achievement. Transforming lives in Christ... how wonderful it is to know that every time you step onto this campus you are entering a place dedicated to your personal transformation into the life and likeness of Christ himself. As teachers, we have seen firsthand how the areas of our mission statement work together to create the spiritual maturity our students need to take the gospel to the ends of the world. In summary, this is our mission, the transformation of the whole person, the transformation of a life in Christ. As a former head of school, I am amazed at the remarkable job our administrators do in managing expenses and making the most of every dollar. Even so, tuition only covers the basic costs of operations. For our mission to flourish, we must supplement tuition with contributions to the Annual Fund. I urge you then to make an offering to the Lord in support of the mission of BT. I look forward to the beginning of the school year when the Annual Fund drive begins. I make out my check that very day believing in faith that the new school year will reap a rich harvest. Plant your seed today. Support the Annual Fund and thank God for the gift of Blessed Trinity Catholic High School.

Why I Give

"I contribute to the Annual Fund, but I wish I could give much more. This place is my home, where I've made some of my greatest friends, where I dream of my kids going, where I wake up every day eager to teach. I truly feel that Blessed Trinity is the type of place people dream of teaching at, and if I can contribute at all to that, I wanna do all I can. My family is part of BT, and BT is part of my family." Jamie Wagner, Physical Education

Why I Give

"Contributing to the Annual Fund is an honor and a pleasure for me. I have contributed since my first year as a teacher at Blessed Trinity because I believe in the vision of this school. I am inspired by the students here, and I look forward to spending time with them each day. If I can help improve this community at all, I want to do that: This contribution is one small way that I can give back to a school that has given me so much joy. I contribute to the Annual Fund because I know that Blessed Trinity students can improve our world, and I want to help them do that. " Leslie DePietro, English

Why I Give "I give to the Annual Fund because I believe in Catholic education. I attended Catholic school from Kindergarten through college, and I was determined to provide the same opportunity for my children. My husband and I have succeeded in our dream to provide a Catholic education for our children, however it does come with sacrifices. We believe in Blessed Trinity Catholic High School, and consider this community our second family. I am not only an employee, but a parent of past, present and future Titans. My family and I have a vested interest in Blessed Trinity and work everyday to do our best to continue to grow this school, the programs, the building and community. From day one, Blessed Trinity has exceeded expectations and I want to see that legacy continue. While the tuition covers the basic operating costs, it is the time, talent and Annual Fund dollars of the community, parents and employees that sets Blessed Trinity Catholic High School apart from the rest." Jolene McIntyre, Business Manager

Capital Campaign

From 2011-2015, Blessed Trinity conducted its first ever Capital Campaign to provide major capital improvements to the school. During that time, more than $3 million in campaign funds were received. The donated funds were used to establish a permanent endowment at BT which now has over $1 million, to turf the main stadium field as well the lacrosse / soccer field and the baseball field.

The next phase, which was completed this past summer was the fine arts annex. All the donors who contributed to the Capital Campaign have been recognized in previous Annual Reports and we would once again like to express our sincere appreciation for their contributions.

This year, and in coming years, once our budget needs have been fulfilled, the surplus funds received from the Annual Fund will be combined with existing Capital Funds in order to complete the remaining project of a locker room/restroom/concession facility to be located near the tennis courts and lacrosse field. During the 2016-2017 school year, additional Capital Campaign gifts were received, and these donors are recognized below.

GRACE Scholars Program Blessed Trinity Catholic High School participates in the G.R.A.C.E. Scholars program, a state-approved Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) established by the Archdiocese of Atlanta. In 2008, the state of Georgia passed legislation which allows Georgia residents to re-direct a portion of their state income taxes to a private school of their choice for use in providing financial aid to students coming from public schools. The students must qualify for the financial aid based on need. Last year, 229 participants in the G.R.A.C.E. program selected Blessed Trinity as the recipient of their funds. As a result, Blessed Trinity received approximately $264,330 and was able to provide financial aid to 100% of all new students who qualified. These students will continue to receive financial aid through G.R.A.C.E. for the next four years provided they continue to qualify. Because these funds came from G.R.A.C.E., it allowed regularly budgeted financial aid dollars to go farther in supporting the financial needs of the students coming from our Catholic feeder schools and other private schools. This past year, the funds approved by the state were exhausted on January 1. All of the BT participants were able to take advantage of the “Early Bird” registration provided by G.R.A.C.E. Applications are now being accepted on-line (www.gracescholars.org) for the 2018 tax year. We encourage everyone in the BT community to take advantage of this opportunity as soon as possible, and want to thank the following families who chose to participate in the G.R.A.C.E. Scholars program; we hope they will continue to choose G.R.A.C.E. as part of their tax planning strategy for years to come.

Ways To Give Each and every gift that is given to Blessed Trinity Catholic High School, regardless of the amount, holds an immeasurable level of importance to the school. All gifts are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Careful planning of your gift cannot only help to maximize the gift that you make to the school, but also your personal goals, as well. Legal and financial advisors can best help you determine the type of gift most advantageous and appropriate for you to make. There are several opportunities for faculty and staff, alumni, parents, and friends to financially support our school. ANNUAL FUND - The Annual Fund is the most important fundraising effort each school year. At BT, tuition revenues cover the basic operations of the school. Additional requested budget items can only be funded through a successful Annual Fund campaign. Each year, there is a gap between revenues from tuition and the amount needed to fund the entire school budget. Our goal is to have 100% participation in the Annual Fund from our faculty, staff and parent community, regardless of the amount you are able to contribute. Please help to increase our overall participation rate by making a contribution. AUCTION & GALA - The Annual Auction & Gala, held in March, is the single-largest fundraising event for the school. In order to have a successful Auction & Gala, we need volunteers, donated items, sponsorships and attendees. To learn more on getting involved in the Auction, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement. FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION - Different levels of membership are available for the BT Fine Arts Association. Each membership has its own set of benefits, including tickets and apparel. All proceeds help pay the expenses for the school’s arts program. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION - Different levels of membership are available for the BT Athletic Association. Each membership has its own set of benefits, including tickets and apparel. All proceeds help pay the expenses of the school’s athletic program. FUNDRAISING PROGRAMS & EVENTS - The Office of Institutional Advancement raises additional funds for the school through partnering with select merchants, the BT Fine Arts Association, and the BT Athletic Association. SCHOLARSHIPS & ENDOWMENTS - The school has several endowed scholarships, awards, and funds. Only the interest of these gifts is awarded each year. With the principal’s approval, donors may contribute any amount to an existing endowment, or endow a scholarship of their own with a minimum gift of $25,000.

There are many different methods that donors may choose to fund their gift: Monetary - Your gifts provide immediate tax savings through deductions and provides the school with funds for current use. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express are all accepted. Securities - Some donors choose to transfer stock to BT as their gift each year. Contact the Office of Institutional Advancement to make these arrangements. Matching Gifts - A matching gift is when an employer will match the charitable contribution made by an employee or the spouse of an employee. This can multiply your gift to the school by simply completing the appropriate form from your company. Check with your Human Resources Department about their matching gifts policies and procedures. Gifts in Kind - These non-cash gifts include items that the school needs and uses including, but not limited to, furniture, office supplies, or printing services. Planned Gifts - The most common planned gift is when a donor leaves a gift to the school as part of a will. Other planned gifts include life insurance, charitable remainder trusts, and annuity trusts. Establish a Scholarship or Endowment - The school has ten endowed scholarships: Goizueta Foundation, Robert White/UPS, Jessica Turner Memorial, Kevin Mann Memorial, Devon McKniff Memorial, 1st Lt. Scott Joseph Fleming Memorial, Jeff and Jeannie Stokes Family, Elizabeth Huffner Memorial, St. Joseph Scholarship, and the Founder’s Endowed Scholarship. Donors may endow a scholarship of their own for a minimum gift of $25,000.

If you would like to learn more about ways to give, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement.
