LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
About the Cover My design process and philosophy revolve around one thing: incorporating nature into my work. I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors and have developed a strong passion for its natural beauty and preservation. I also travel extensively around the world and have gained a lot of perspective from seeing a wide range of design styles and techniques used in practice. These experiences have proven to be a huge resource in my design process. Using one of my designs, I created a mosaic out of all my pictures from traveling that have to do with nature. I am expressing how my travels in nature have helped aid my design process and philosophy.

The Productive Landscape: Taqueria Del Sol 5
The Productive Landscape: Taqueria Del Sol This project looks at designing a productive landscape by using only edible and medicinal plants. An additional objective of this project was to provide an interactive landscape for customers to learn about the nutritional benefits of plants and to relax before or after enjoying their meal. My site, Taqueria Del Sol, is located off of Prince Street in downtown Athens, Georgia.

PLAN VIEW This plan view shows my finalized plan for Taqueria Del Sol. I created a sweeping design to create contrast with the rigid and box-like building which provides visual interest for the viewer. There is a desire to continue exploring and see what lies around the next corner. On the left site a small outdoor room was created with benches and an arbor to provide a clam, relaxing, and shaded place to sit.

Jackson Street Building: Landscape Design
11
JACKSON STREET BUILDING: LANDSCAPING DESIGN In August of 2012, the College of Environment and Design at the University of Georgia moved into a new LEED Gold certified building. Our task was to design the landscaping for the front of the building. This project differs because my inspiration comes from a piece of music by Puccini. While the piece was playing I used pastels to render whatever inspired me on a base map of the site. My resulting piece is the foundation for my design.

Infill Housing Project
17
INFILL HOUSING PROJECT The focus of this project, infill housing design, was to take a vacant lot and propose two houses and their surrounding landscape. The site was located off of Milledge Avenue in Athens, Georgia. Pre-existing conditions had to be taken into account which included the shape of the lots, surrounding buildings, street traffic, and both pleasing and harsh views. I wanted to take two different approaches and design a formal landscape for one house and a natural landscape for the other.
SECTION ELEVATION 18
MASTER PLAN 19
DETAILS OF BOTH DESIGNS
In this design, I went with the approach of a formal garden in order to complement the integrity of the house. This was accomplished with tall evergreen plants for framing, a loose symmetrical layout, large open lawns, and a variety of spaces providing different experiences. These spaces give the site the feel of a larger garden.
20
For this house, I want to restore the ecological balance and create a naturalistic look. This is done by incorporating native plants in large swaths arranged in a sweeping layout. I show this through reforestation of the front yard, providing native grassland habitat, and incorporating plants that provide food and shelter for animals.

Oak Grove Conservation Subdivision 23
Oak Grove Conservation Subdivision Located just outside of Athens, Georgia, this site is a stalled Conservation Subdivision project. Work was beginning again and the eastern half of the site was slated for development. In keeping with the current theme, an additional 100 lots were proposed with hiking trails and green space. It was also required to preserve as much of the existing woods as possible. My first phase of designing was to complete an inventory and analysis review of the site.

After I completed my inventory and analysis phase for this project, I designed the arrangement of lots, arriving at this draft, marker on trash paper design.

After I had my lots and roads planned out I began the road engineering process. Using DOS Box and engineering techniques, I calculated the vertical and horizontal road alignments for my subdivision.

Neo-Traditional Development Project: Oconee Meadows 33
Neo-Traditional Development Project: Oconee Meadows The purpose of this project was to design a mixed-use development. I began with a class field trip to Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA to look at examples of mixed-use projects and urban design. Gaining inspiration from Savannah, I wanted to incorporate the town squares commonly found there and provide as much green space as possible. The use of axes was also a strong focus in my design.
After examining my inventory and analysis samples, I drafted this plan using markers on trash paper for my design.

Laser Tag In the Park
For this group project, my partner and I designed a laser tag field that was located in Dudley park just east of downtown Athens, Georgia. These next few diagrams show the relationship of playing fields to movement within them and other fields.
40
These four diagrams are showing the phases of movements participants would probably take during the game. Arrangement of obstacles and barriers was important in designing an interesting playing field.
41
These are structures my partner and I designed for the playing fields. A requirement for the project was to design a laser tag field that could still be used by the public as a park. With that in mind, we created seating benches that double as obstacles to hide and shoot behind, along with forts that double as gazebos.

About the Author Brian Reed is finishing his fourth year in the College of Environment and Design BLA program at the University of Georgia. Through the past four years, he has developed a wide-ranging skill set that includes AutoCAD, Photoshop, InDesign, ArcMap GIS, Google Sketch-Up as well as hand and computer graphics. He has also done many landscaping jobs for his friends and family, both design and implementation. Brian has also become very involved in the organic agriculture program at the University. He will be completing a Certificate in Organic Agriculture and has worked at several farms throughout the United States gaining knowledge and experience by working with the land along the way. By combining these skills, related job experiences and interest in the outdoors and art, Brian provides a wide-ranging expertise on design and the environment.
