BCA CENTER ONGOING EXHIBITIONS

TRANSCENDENT

SPIRITUALITY IN CONTEMPORARY ART ON VIEW THROUGH FEBRUARY 8, 2020 1st Floor Gallery & Lower Level, BCA Center

Transcendent presents a selection of artists who explore or evoke themes of spirituality through their work. Challenging the unspoken taboo of representing the divine or faith in contemporary art, Transcendent seeks to connect creative practice with the meditative or the sacred. Drawing upon diverse artistic and cultural traditions, these artists ask us to contemplate notions of identity, impermanence, and sanctity in everyday life. Transcendent features nationally and internationally recognized artists Anila Quayyum Agha, Leonardo Benzant, Maïmouna Guerresi, Shahzia Sikander, Sandy Sokoloff, Shelley Warren, and Zarina. These artists move beyond boundaries of geography and culture to create transformative works of art that deepen our human experience.

BCA Exhibitions are funded in part by a grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and Vermont Arts Council.

TRAVIS SHILLING

TYRANNOSAURUS CLAN ON VIEW THROUGH FEBRUARY 8, 2020 Roth Gallery, 2nd Floor, BCA Center

Travis Shilling is a Canadian-Ojibwe painter who establishes deeply narrative tableaus that evoke the interaction between modern humanity and the natural world. Tackling issues of land use, cultural history, and humanity’s impact on the environment, Shilling’s encapsulated stories are concurrently deeply personal and widely universal. Tyrannosaurus Clan examines the impact of industry on the natural world, extinction facing animal species and cultural identity, and the intersection of where the world of modern humanity meets the realm of animals and animal spirits.

Featured artists include Jane Adams, Suzanne Anker, Andrea Haenggi, Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco, and Candace Thompson who work in a range of media including installation, performance, video, participatory social events, and interventions. BRIGITTA VARADI EXPLORING THE INVISIBLE FEBRUARY 21-JUNE 7, 2020 Roth Gallery, 2nd Floor, BCA Center Artist Reception: Friday, February 21, 5-8 pm Brigitta Varadi’s research-based artist residency and workshops are a partnership between Burlington City Arts and Shelburne Farms. Combining the missions of both organizations, the artist will lead conversations about social and cultural issues impacting the Vermont landscape and its community, culminating in this BCA Center exhibition. BCA Exhibitions are funded in part by a grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and Vermont Arts Council.

Brigitta Varadi, Markings, 2018, Westbeth Gallery, installation view

Brigitta Varadi explores the invisible, everyday rituals of working life. Varadi’s research-based practice is an integral aspect of her creative process with each project incorporating experimentation and new techniques. In the summer of 2019, Varadi visited Shelburne Farms as a BCA artist-in-residence where she processed clay sourced from the property as part of a two-day community tile making workshop. Exploring the Invisible features a large-scale installation of more than 2,000 ceramic tiles created by artist and community members inspired by the laborious restoration of historic tiles at Shelburne Farms. The exhibit also includes Varadi’s felted-wool panels and a video performance. Exploring the Invisible examines themes of sustainability, craft, and rediscovered traditions.

BCA CENTER WINTER / SPRING EXHIBITIONS

ESTEFANIA PUERTA SORE MOUTH SWORE FEBRUARY 21-JUNE 7, 2020 Lower Level Gallery, BCA Center Artist Reception: Friday, February 21, 5-8 pm Estefania Puerta’s Sore Mouth Swore is the fourth installment of BCA’s Project Vermont, a new series dedicated to experimentation by providing a setting for contemporary Vermont artists to push their artistic practice while creating new work. The exhibition is a collaboration between Burlington City Arts and Generator. BCA Exhibitions are funded in part by a grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and Vermont Arts Council.

Estefania Puerta is an artist who insists on traversing different media to make works that go beyond conventions of any one genre. Identifying as an immigrant Latina woman, Puerta is deeply connected to displacement and a “sense of body” that doesn’t quite fit anywhere. For Sore Mouth Swore, the artist creates an immersive installation that spills from the lower level gallery and travels through the art center’s stairwell. Sore Mouth Swore utilizes poetic alliteration to reveal the challenging act of pronouncing these words in succession while addressing the persistent failures and uncertainty of language. Evolving from spoken to visual expressions of this theme, Puerta examines the ambiguity within meaning— playing with notions of materials, media, and transformation.
