Butler University Welcome To

BUTLER!

The five faculty and 113 students present when Butler University opened in 1855 laid a solid foundation for more than 150 years of creative change and progress. Today’s 4,200 students carry on that legacy, as they continue to look ahead while treasuring the traditions unique to Butler. The young school, originally named North Western Christian University, was unusually innovative. It was the first in Indiana, and only the third in the nation, to admit women on an equal basis with men. With the appointment in 1858 of Catherine Merrill as Demia Butler Professor of English, the institution became the second in the country to appoint a woman faculty member, the first to establish an endowed chair specifically for a female professor and the first to establish a professorship in English literature. The school was also the first in Indiana to allow its students, with parental consent, to choose subjects suited to their needs under a new “elective” system. As Indianapolis grew, the city’s commercial district began to penetrate the heavily-wooded campus at what is now the corner of Thirteenth Street and College Avenue. In 1873, the board of directors decided to sell the downtown campus and accept a gift of 25 acres in Irvington, then a suburb east of Indianapolis. In 1877, North Western Christian University became Butler University, taking the name of its founder and benefactor, Indianapolis attorney Ovid Butler. Butler moved again 50 years later, as the “Circle City” continued to grow. In 1928, classes were held for the first time in Jordan Hall, an imposing new Gothic structure erected on the beautiful Fairview Park Site, a wooded tract north of the city on the White River and the Inland Waterway Canal. Today’s students come from every state in the nation and from many foreign countries to enroll in degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, or in one of five professional colleges -- Business Administration, Education, Fine Arts, Liberal Arts, Communication or Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Butler is one of only 21 private schools in the country offering a pharmacy program.

Butler University

True to the vision of its founders, the University continues to offer an array of professional and pre-professional programs within the context of a strong commitment to the traditional arts and sciences and to the values of liberal education. Butler continues to welcome highly motivated, intellectually curious men and women, and to prepare them for lives of professional and community service and creative, ethical action. Butler is one of the top 20 US colleges for producing business executives, is in the top 10% for preparing future Ph.D.s and is located in the Number two city for college graduates starting a career. Although the thriving city of Indianapolis has once again grown to surround Butler University, the 290-acre campus remains a serenely beautiful area with 20 buildings, playing fields, a formal botanical garden, and a nature preserve surrounded by wellestablished residential communities. Located only five miles from “The Circle,” the heart of the city, the campus offers easy access to cultural and sporting events in downtown Indianapolis. Butler’s mission is to provide the highest quality of liberal and professional education and to integrate the liberal arts into profession education by creating, and fostering a stimulating intellectual community built upon interactive dialogue and inquiry among faculty and students. Butler University is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The University is licensed for teacher training by the State Department of Education in Indiana and appears on the approved list of the American Association of University Women.

Hinkle Fieldhouse

Home of the

BULLDOGS

Hinkle Fieldhouse has reigned as one of the nation’s great sports arenas for more than 80 years. The classic facility was constructed in 1928 and it has stood up to the test of time, maintaining the splendor, character and atmosphere that made it one of the nation’s most famous sports arenas more than 80 years ago. The Fieldhouse, which remained virtually unchanged for more than 60 years, received a major facelift during the summer of 1989. Among the changes to the historical building were new chairback seats in the lower arena, new doors and windows on the south side of the exterior, new athletic team offices, a training room and locker rooms off the main arena, a VIP lounge, repaved parking lot, outside Constructed in 1928, Hinkle Fieldhouse is on the National Register of Historic Buildings. landscaping, extensive interior painting and a new public address system. More recently, the Fieldhouse has received a new weight room, new football offices, sports information/ marketing offices, and administrative offices. All of the renovations have been geared toward upgrading the facility, while retaining the history and nostalgia of the home of “Hoosier Hysteria.” The original construction of Butler Fieldhouse was part of a massive project designed to give Butler one of the finest athletic plants in the nation. The project was financed by a corporation of 41 prominent and farsighted Indianapolis businessmen. Completion of the Fieldhouse was guaranteed when Butler signed a lease agreement with the Indiana High School Athletic Association allowing the high school state basketball tournament to be played in the massive new facility. In addition to basketball, the Fieldhouse was the site of the Indiana State High School When Hinkle Fieldhouse opened in 1928, the floor ran east and west, which put more than half the seats at the ends of the court. It was turned to its current configuration in the early 1930’s. Volleyball Championship from 2001 to 2006.

Being a Bulldog Strength & Conditioning

Butler athletes benefit from an extensive strength and conditioning program under the direction of Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jim Peal. The purpose of Butler’s strength training program is two-fold. One is to reduce the risk of injury and the second is to increase performance potential. By increasing the strength of each athlete’s muscles, bones and connective tissues, the chance of incurring an injury while performing lessens. The increase in functional strength is also an important step toward reaching the athlete’s athletic potential. The strength and conditioning program stresses flexibility, agility, jumping skills, speed and reaction time, as well as strength. The program utilizes free weights, strength machinery, manual resistance and additional innovative techniques to help maximize the chance for Butler athletes to succeed. The center of Butler’s strength and conditioning program is the 4,000-square foot weight training room located in Hinkle Fieldhouse. The weight room, which features an entire outside wall of glass, is stocked with free weights, weight machines, stationary bikes, stairmasters, and related apparatus, and allows Butler athletes to train in an open and comfortable environment.

Academic Support

Balancing the demands of NCAA Division I athletics with the responsibilities of a rigorous academic schedule is one of the biggest challenges facing collegiate student-athletes. To help ease that challenge Butler provides a dedicated academic support system. The Athletic Academic Support Offices are located in Hinkle Fieldhouse, where coordinator Sonya Hopkins and staff are available to assist student-athletes in solving academic and nonacademic problems. Butler offers its student-athletes academic and career counseling, guidance in study skills and time management, and academic tutoring. The academic staff monitors each student-athlete’s progress toward Butler’s degree requirements. Support services for student-athletes are provided on a by-need or by-student/coach request basis. Butler teams and student-athletes have won numerous league and national academic awards.

Travel in Style

The Bulldogs will travel in style during the 2009 campaign, using one of the finest fleets of bus transportation for road games. The coaches feature all-electric plush recliners for the players as well as a lounge area at the rear. The fleet also comes complete with multiple flat panel TVs, two satellite systems with Direct TV®, twin DVD systems, on-board rest room and a galley area complete with ice chests. Wireless internet access is also available throughout the coach.

Sports Medicine

Butler student-athletes have access to a comprehensive sports medicine program that focuses on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries. Under the supervision of Head Athletic Trainer Ryan Galloy, Butler’s athletes are served by an extensive team of physicians, health care professionals and certified athletic trainers. The Bulldogs’ training room is located on the west end of Hinkle Fieldhouse, immediately behind the women’s basketball office. The training room is divided into four areas - rehabilitation and injury management, athlete preparation, administration and storage - and is fully equipped to provide thorough rehabilitation. Butler’s athletic training staff provides care for Butler student-athletes at practices and games, while also maintaining daily hours for treatment and rehabilitation. The staff also works to educate Butler’s student-athletes in the areas of injury prevention, nutrition and various wellness issues. Butler’s sports medicine program utilizes the extensive medical community in Indianapolis, which boasts one of the largest and most knowledgeable groups of sports medicine professionals in the nation. Butler student-athletes have access in Indianapolis to world-renowned medical facilities, as well as many of the leading physicians in the world of sports medicine.

2010 Season Outlook

Bring It Home To Hinkle In past seasons, the Horizon League Volleyball Championship was held at a predetermined site. For each team, the regular season was essentially just for seeding, with one school knowing well in advance it would be the host school. For the first time in the history of Horizon League volleyball, the regular season champion will host the league tournament, which adds a little more flame to the fire. The 2010 Bulldogs have made their intentions loud and clear: Bring the Horizon League tournament home to Hinkle Fieldhouse. “We feel like we have great depth and strong players at every position, which will create a lot of competition for our players,” head coach Sharon Clark said. “We return a strong core of upperclassmen. When you look

at our roster, with five freshmen some people would consider us young. But our new players come in with good experience and are more ready than freshmen we’ve had in the past.” Clark’s 11th team at BU appears to have the ingredients to bring the tourney home to Hinkle. The team returns five starters – including an AVCA honorable mention All-American honoree and an all-league setter - plus the libero from a team that went 21-14 in 2009. Clark says this year’s squad also has the size and versatility to compete for the league title. “We’re bigger and we’re a much better blocking team,” Clark said. “We are also much more versatile. We have players who can hit on the outside as well as play in the middle. That’s a big plus for us. We’re not so one-dimensional.” NEWCOMERS JOIN WOLFE ON THE OUTSIDE The outside hitting corps is definitely a strength for Butler this season. The unit features a senior All-America candidate as well as a pair of highly-regarded freshmen. Leading the way is senior Jessica Wolfe, a first team All-Horizon League performer the last two years and an all-region pick last fall as well. At the end of last season, Wolfe became the second player in Butler history to earn AVCA All-America recognition, following Areal Bienemy in 2003-04. The 6-2 senior led the Horizon League with 4.01 kills per set and 4.62 points per set. She ranked in the nation’s top 50 in both categories. “Jessie is our core,” Clark said. “She came into camp as physically strong as she’s ever been. She’s hitting and blocking well, just doing the things she’s always done for us. She’s always been very confident and aggressive. The difference for her now is that she understands the bigger picture about the team. As a senior, she has that maturity about her.

Jessica Wolfe was named an AVCA All-America after leading the Horizon League in points and kills last season.

“We think she’ll raise her game to a higher level this season. Jessie wants to be the best. And at the end of

the day, that’s the most important thing. It’s rare to find someone who thinks that way all the way through.” Freshmen Maggie Harbison and Tade Atanda (Todd-ay Ah-tahn-da) and community college transfer Maria Mayer are also projected to take a lot of swings opposite Wolfe. Clark is extremely optimistic about the group of outside hitting newcomers. Harbison is a versatile 6-1 player from Carmel, Ind., who is expected to be able to contribute immediately. The freshman was an all-state player in high school and set school records for kills in a season and career. “Maggie is physically ready and well-conditioned to play for us this season,” Clark said. “She adds so much to our game with her ability to ball handle. She’s strong and can hit well, and she definitely adds to our blocking game.” Motade “Tade” Atanda is another freshman outside hitter to watch. The 5-7 California native is an explosive athlete who makes up for being undersized with quickness and leaping ability. “Tade is incredibly dynamic and athletic. We fully expect her to contribute this season,” Clark said. “She has picked up what we do pretty fast. She’s a great hitter and a very good blocker. Some people might see her as a bit small, but she plays very big.” DAWGS ‘SET’ AT SETTER POSITION Butler has two capable setters in sophomores Gina Vera and Kelly Hunter. Vera was the primary setter in 2009, earning Horizon League all-newcomer status and finishing second in the conference in assists per set. Vera, who spent a portion of her summer in Europe, fin-

2010 Season Outlook ished 44th in the nation in assists per set as a freshman last year and was in the national rankings each week. Clark says Vera will be even better as a sophomore in 2010. “Gina did a great job training in Europe. She came back in better shape than she showed up last year,” Clark said. “We see her as a top 30 setter in the country. And even though she’s just a sophomore, she plays like a senior and our players trust her.” Not only is her passing usually on target, Vera thrives as a defender in the setter position. She is a major piece to BU’s blocking game, which is a big part of Butler’s on-court system. “Gina’s a very good blocker who has been trained well,” Clark said. “That’s something that tends to be overlooked. But she reads well and knows where to line up.” Hunter saw action in 32 matches and 88 sets last season, primarily becoming an asset in Butler’s service game. She “Kelly does a great job for us serving and passing,” Clark said. “She’s one of the best passers on the team. She can step in at any time and solidify are serve receive and pass well for us. She’s definitely a step ahead now than she was last year as a freshman.” DUO RETURNS AT MIDDLE BLOCKER In 10 seasons under Clark, the Bulldogs have made their blocking game a priority. Butler has had success in the middle for several years, and that tradition appears

to continue thanks to a quartet of skilled blockers on this year’s team. Butler returns two middle blocker starters from last season in junior Maureen Bamiro and senior Jalesa Lee. Both players give the Dawgs size, athleticism and experience in the middle. Bamiro led the team and ranked fifth in the Horizon League with 1.06 blocks per set last year. “Maureen has grown so much as a player. She’s gotten incredibly better every year and this year will be no different for her,” Clark said. “She was in great shape and looked good in the preseason.” In addition to her blocking, Bamiro also packs a punch as a hitter. She finished third on the team last season with 2.12 kills per set and had 10 matches with 10 or more kills. “She can be dominant at the net,” Clark said. “The biggest improvement she’s made from last year to this year has been her attacking ability. She has more weapons in her arsenal and we believe she’ll be more of an offensive threat for us.” Lee returns after starting 33 of the team’s 35 matches last season. She was second on the team with 72 blocks last year and was one of the squad’s most efficient hitters. The 6-2 Indianapolis native hit .307 for the season while averaging 1.41 kills per set. In Horizon League play, she hit a sterling .317 and averaged 0.64 blocks per set. “Being a senior, this is a make-or-break year for Jalesa,” Clark said. “She has battled some knee injuries and surgeries in the past, but we’ve been pleasantly surprised with her progress. Despite the injuries, her arm swing is quick as lightning and she’s fun to watch when she gets going.” Other players who may see playing time at middle blocker include freshmen Claire Randich, Harbison and senior utility player Susan Lester. Like Harbison, Randich is a versatile player who can go on the outside or in the middle. The 6-0 freshman played for a powerhouse program at Joliet Catholic Academy in Joliet, Ill. “Claire is a really nice addition. The nice thing about her is that she played with (sophomore setter) Gina Vera in high school so they have an automatic chemistry. She plays without fear.”

Katie Daprile, who set a single-season record with 556 digs in 2009, enters her senior season ranking sixth in Butler history in digs.

Lester joins the volleyball program after a decorated four-year basketball career for Butler. The 6-2 grad student who was a volleyball standout in high school scored 1,275 career points and was an All-Horizon League performer. The Bulldogs are hoping that basketball success transfers over to the volleyball

court. “Susan’s the ultimate role player for us. She has a knack for playing volleyball,” Clark said. “She can play multiple positions, which is what we need. Having played basketball, she is very seasoned and we can depend on her to go out there and compete. As a hitter, she is very physical and can pack a punch.” DAPRILE RETURNS AT LIBERO Much like outside hitter, setter and middle blocker, Butler boasts a returning starter at the libero position. Senior Katie Daprile returns for her third season of wearing the opposite colored jersey. The Bargersville, Ind., native has enjoyed a tremendous career at Butler and owns the school’s top two single-season marks for digs. She broke her own school record with 556 digs last season. After repairing an injured shoulder, Daprile appears to be on track for another record-breaking campaign. “Getting her back to full strength has been important for us. It didn’t take long for her to get her form passing and her defense to get back to where she is,” Clark said. “Her presence on the court and her command of our serve receive have been there for us instantly. She’s a fierce competitor and we believe she can be the top libero in our league.” Butler has two freshmen who will work behind Daprile and gain experience playing libero in college. Maureen Nesbit and Alli Norris come to Butler and will gain a year of experience in Butler’s system. Nesbit was an honorable mention all-state player on a very successful Althoff Catholic team in Belleville, Ill. “Maureen has a lot of potential. We’re excited to have her and see her develop,” Clark said. “She’ll be a player to watch in the future.” Norris was an all-state and UnderArmour American Top 100 performer at Carmel High School just north of Indianapolis. She played on the same high school team as Harbison. “Alli comes to Butler with good skills and good training,” Clark said. “We want to see her get physically stronger just to maintain through the season.” CHALLENGING SCHEDULE FEATURES 13 TILTS AT HOME Butler is playing a pair of early tournaments that will feature top-notch competition before hosting a fourteam invitational at Hinkle Fieldhouse in September. • Head Coach • 11th Season at Butler • 18th Season as a head coach • 258 Career Wins • California State-Sacramento, 1989

The Butler volleyball program continues to thrive under the guidance of head coach Sharon Clark, who begins her 11th season with the Bulldogs and 18th season as a collegiate coach in 2010. During her time at Butler, Clark has made a habit of developing some of the top talent in the Horizon League. Seven Bulldog players have been named to the conference all-newcomer team in the past five seasons. Meanwhile, the team has steadily risen to the top half of the league standings. Clark’s 2009 Butler squad was one of her best. Butler went 21-14 - including a 9-0 mark at home - and claimed a regular season tourney championship at IPFW. The total of 21 wins was the program’s highest mark since 1997. Another milestone for Clark came during the 2009 season, when the coach picked up her 250th career victory. She enters the 2010 campaign with 156 victories at Butler, 13 shy of the school record. The 2008 Bulldogs finished the year with 19 wins - the school’s most since 2003 - and ended up just one set shy of reaching the Horizon League Championship match for the 10th time in program history. Clark enters the season with a 258-253 record in 17 seasons as a head coach and a 156-145 slate in 10 seasons with Butler, including a 75-69 mark against league foes. A proven recruiter and developer of talent, Clark has coached a pair of All-Americans during her tenure, including current outside hitter Jessica Wolfe, an honorable mention selection in 2009. Former BU great Areal Bienemy was named as an AVCA All-America honorable mention selection in 2003 before repeating the honor in 2004. Additionally, Clark has coached 13 All-Horizon League players and 10 all-newcomer team honorees during her time at Butler. The Bulldogs have advanced to the league tournament semifinals five times in Clark’s 10 seasons, including a break-out 2000 team that finished with an 18-12 record and a second-place finish at the tournament in her first season. The 2003 squad put together the most successful season under Clark with a 20-12 overall record, finishing the season ranked fourth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Midwest region and 55th nationally, according to RPI rankings. That campaign was followed by a 12-2 Horizon League mark in 2004, the best record since the 1997 season.

The program, just in its fourth year, included 26 coaches at Clark’s June 2005 session at Emory University in Atlanta. A former winner of the NCAA Ethnic Minority Postgraduate Scholarship, Clark also co-founded Club Sacramento, a junior volleyball team, in 1985. She coached the team for eight years, including a sixth-place finish in the 1991 Junior Olympics. In 2007, she was honored with the Sam Lacy Pioneer Award, presented by the sports task force of the National Association of Black Journalists, for her success and leadership as an NCAA head coach and member of the AVCA. She and her husband, Tim, have a son, Myles Oliver.

The 2006 season was a memorable one for Clark, as the Bulldog coach registered her 200th career victory with a thrilling 3-2 win over Evansville before notching her 100th Butler win in a 3-0 sweep at Youngstown State. Clark came to Butler after serving as the head coach at the University of California-Davis for six seasons.
