SHAPING WORKSPACES
1 2
SCENARIO Our work activity occupies many different PHYSICAL & VIRTUAL SPHERES, but how can we ensure our PRIVACY is not invaded in these public workspaces? Many corporations/institutions operate on a 24 HOUR CYCLE: we seldom stop doing work after the “work day” is over Work has lost its immediate IDENTIFICATION with the office-as a room/space in a designated building where all work tasks are carried out and more places become AVAILABLE for mobile work
POINT OF ENTRY/ CONCEPT As these workspaces get CROWDED, how do you ensure that your privacy is not invaded by a fellow teleworker who is only inches away? This led me to start modeling DIVIDERS and experimenting with collapsibles because they are UBIQUITOUS and their subtleties make them INTUITIVE and PRACTICAL
3
PROTOTYPES Collapsibles are FUNCTIONAL DOUBLES with two opposite states, one folded/passive, one unfolded/active. They grow and shrink, expand, and contract, according to FUNCTIONAL NEED
ASSEMBLE TABLETOP Comprised of incremented slots which allow various sized divider combs to intersect and stand up to provide privacy for the user from their surroundings
SNAP MODULES Series of boxes with snaps on the sides to allow connectivity and modular properties
STANDING FOLDS A folded sheet that can stand freely and collapses for a neater appearance
FANNING BOX The fabric blocks your neighbor but allows light to pass through without being completely disconnected
SEMIPERMEABLE FAN A large divider that does not completely disconnect people in the space. Allows visibility in between wooden panels

SKETCHES Prior FEEDBACK from prototypes inform that the project with the most potential is the assembly table top because the user can RECONFIGURE their seating arrangements giving them OWNERSHIP of their space
TABLETOP #1 A divider slides on all sides of the table. The tracks are underneath the table and allow the divider to slide in and out easily
TABLETOP #2 A divider also slides through the center of the table and nests into the table top when it is not needed

COLLAB COMPETITION | BAG
1
SCENARIO The Philadelphia Museum of Art held its 19th annual COLLAB student design competition in 2011, which also coincided with the PMA’s exhibition ‘Zaha Hadid: Form in Motion’ The Junior ID students responded to one of the most challenging design briefs to date. 2011’s national call for entries asked students to “… design an OVERNIGHT BAG that brings FUN and FUNCTION back to today’s travelers.” Twenty six members of our class responded and worked tirelessly over a two month period, motivated by the innovative spirit of Zaha Hadid, and created substantive responses to COLLAB’s design brief
COLLAB INFINITY
2
FINAL PROTOTYPE The style of Zaha Hadid embodies line FLUIDITY, always creating dynamic shapes and forms from shoes to buildings Inspired by Zaha Hadid’s style, I modeled a bag made of ONE sheet of styrene with slits on the surface to allow FLEXIBILITY. The fabric pouch inside the styrene is a material similar to spandex, also allowing the contents inside to EXPANDA AND CONTRACT. As the bag fills up, the slits on the outside surface CONTOUR the shape of the items inside. Holes on the sides are sewn to keep the bag together The beauty of the bag lies in its FUNCTION while also informing the MINIMALISTIC aesthetic

BENSON PARK | SEATING & PLANTERS
1
SCENARIO Beyond a group of COMMITTED neighbors and stakeholders, most people don’t know about Benson Park. It’s NOT on the City’s park registry or even marked on Google Maps. However, through thick and thin, the community has MAINTAINED the space. We saw opportunities to support the Benson Park stakeholders in imagining and creating a new way to REJUVENATE the park
2
FINAL PROTOTYPE
Amongst the a number of the STAKEHOLDERS and some City staff, there has been conversation about possibly cutting out segments of paving in Benson Park to make PLANTERS. What if those planters actually did a little bit more than just provide an area to plant stuff? What if they also provided SEATING? What if the ‘garden’ is actually a SERIES of planters instead of creating one big garden? What if the ‘garden’ is actually a series of planters instead of creating one big garden?
To unify the space, my team proposed to BREAK down the walls of the park. Rather than breaking down the walls completely, we wanted to INCORPORATE SEATING as being an INTEGRAL part of the wall. One proposal incorporates seating as there are very FEW BENCHES at Benson, and the other proposal includes PLANTERS that sit on top of the wall.
These ideas brought about the most EXCITEMENT from stakeholders of the community because it puts forward an effort to UNIFY space and those occupying the space. It was hard to VISUALIZE the wall being broken down until we rendered and made models people could INTERACT with. Our models left open the opportunity to keep or get rid of the hand ball court. The REACTION from community members INFORMED us that the court is very important, for kids and exercise.
BENSON PARK

FINAL PROTOTYPE
This seating/planter concept may be implemented into the reconstruction of Benson Park. FUNDING has been achieved by City Council. The larger model can be RECONFIGURED so that community members can see all the possibilities of what Benson Park has the POTENTIAL to be.
BENSON PARK | EXHIBIT
1
SCENARIO After completing the BENSON PARK project, our next task was to tie it all together by designing an EXHIBIT that showcases our work at the AIA center in Philadelphia. Our exhibit was designed, prototyped, and built in less than TWO WEEKS Beyond a group of COMMITTED neighbors and stakeholders, most people don’t know about Benson Park. It’s NOT on the City’s park registry or even marked on Google Maps. However, through thick and thin, the community has MAINTAINED the space. We saw opportunities to support the Benson Park stakeholders in imagining and creating a new way to REJUVENATE the park
BENSON PARK EXHIBIT
2
SKETCHES Building of this exhibit started off with a blank wall. A blank canvas essentially, where the students were to DISPLAY what their project on Benson Park was all about Benson Park consisted of 6 different teams, whom all were represented on shelves built by the students. The shelves were made of foam core and DADO’ed to allow photos to easily slide in and out of the CAVITY. Some of the most efforts were spent on the shelves. My Team’s activities included designing planter boxes that also served as SEATING and a place for play
BENSON PARK EXHIBIT
3
FINAL PROTOTYPE Using 3/4”thick foamcore, we DADO’ed the surface to allow the shelves to SLIDE perpendicular to the wall. We taped the edges of the shelves with colored tape for WAYFINDING and taking the user step by step through the STORY of the project at Benson Park

MANUFACTURING & CONNECTIONS | WALL DECOR
1 2
SCENARIO The objective of this project was to learn how to establish a relationship with a LOCAL manufacturer. The product is not as important as taking steps in learning how to make CONNECTIONS and understanding manufacturing processes I chose to revolve my project on METAL FABRICATION, CUTTING, AND BENDING. My project took shape as a wall mount cut from 1/8 sheet metal and bent to a 30 degree angle. I was in contact with Laserfab, a local metal manufacturing company in Lebanon, Pennsylvania

FINAL PROTOTYPE Due to holiday hours, the company could not quicken their turn around time and fabricate my prototype so I modeled my concept out of 1/8 ACRYLIC and bent the INTERNAL CUTS by laser cutting a JIG that is in the shape of a half HEXAGON. Half of the hex from laser cut panel is cut out to CONTROL the amount of HEAT casted on the acrylic with the strip heater. A BEVELED piece of wood cut a 30 degree angle is used to hold the acrylic in place as it cools

SCENARIO
THE VILLAGE OF ARTS & HUMANITIES
I began student TEACHING with PUBLIC WORKSHOP in collaboration with the VILLAGE OF ARTS & HUMANITIES during summer 2012 for an 8 week intensive building camp. Here, we taught students BASIC BUILDING METHODS and TOOLS and built a CANOPY for the farmer’s market that takes place twice a year. The market is cultivated by PhillyEarth, also an active group of the Village.
SPACE/ DEVELOPMENT The space PERMANENTLY allotted to us was the green space right next to the Village building. The greenery beneath is filled with GRAVEL and BRICKS so the young trees planted there have no space for the roots to SPREAD and grow. Our objective is to UPROOT the dying trees by SIMULATING the idea created with 1 x 2 pieces of wood, painting it green, and growing vines on it to provide some SHADE, since vines can spread with little dirt.
CANOPY
3
FINAL PROTOTYPE BY UPROOTING the dying trees, we had more space to work with. We dug 3 foot holes, 6 total where we built the base and poured concrete with the base inside concrete tubing. Afterwards, we leveled all the bases and began attaching 1 x 2’s to create our overhead PATTERNS.
BASIC BUILDING TECHNIQUES | BENCHES

LULLABIES FOR THE INSOMNIAC | VIBRATING BOX
1
SCENARIO This project addresses the problem of INSOMNIA. “An estimated 50-70 U.S. adults have sleep or wakefulness disorder.”--Centers for Disease Control and Prevention The average insomniac is unable to sleep because their MIND is unable to rest. I propose a routine for people to go through nightly in order to SYSTEMATICALLY shut down each of the FIVE SENSES and INTERN the mind. My objective is to relieve the insomniac through AYURVEDIC Therapy. According to Ayurveda, the FIVE SENSES are the doorways to our INTERNAL PHYSIOLOGY. I believe that if the senses can be SUBTLY relaxed, the BODY & MIND can finally be at REST.
INSOMNIA BOX
2
FINAL PROTOTYPE “What routine, if any, do you have to aid in falling asleep?” “Around two, I shut my lap top, and put it in the other room, and then turn out the light, I try to not think of sleeping, I will play out some scenario in my head but always end up back on the computer.” “ I’ll start working or thinking alot, I’ve tried to make myself fall asleep by tiring out my eyes, it’s not healthy but I’ll be on my phone reading. I try to listen to audio tapes on my phone but I usually get distracted. I’ve tried using Silent Night with Valerian 440 mg but it proved ineffective.”
INSOMNIA BOX
In the form of a little VIBRATING box, the insomniac can place this anywhere in the bed or on the nightstand. The box is composed of: 2 AA batteries, an LED soft yellow bulb, a toothbrush motor that rotates and hits a piece of foam, and a switch that activates the box. The switch is at the end of the rectangular box and the whole side pushes in like a pen to turn on. The box when on, VIBRATES, casts a soft LIGHT, and creates a repetitive SOUND. These touch up on THREE of the five senses and will aid in sleep by tiring out these three senses.
