DFMWR

The Army Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) is a comprehensive network of support and leisure services designed to enhance the lives of Soldiers, their Families, civilian employees, military retirees and other eligible participants. Over 250 employees strive to deliver the highest quality programs and services at Fort Buchanan - from family, child and youth programs to recreation, sports, entertainment, travel and leisure activities. DFMWR exists because the U.S. Army is committed to the well-being of the community of people who serve and stand ready to defend our country.

Fort Buchanan is an energetic military installation with a primary focus of meeting the needs of all. It serves and supports Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard Soldiers, Air Force and U.S. Navy Reserve personnel, Department of Defense civilians, veterans, retirees, and military family members. The installation also supports some 32 federal agencies stationed in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

NOTE: An average of 160,000 vehicles enter the installation monthly based on statistical data from traffic control at the installation’s gates.

On Post Advertising Fort Buchanan’s on post advertising locations are strategically chosen based on high visibility and traffic both vehicle and pedestrian. Fort Buchanan has an average monthly traffic of 160,000 vehicles and more than 3,000 visitors every week.

Banners Banners are placed at a traffic intersection on a main road of the installation. The fence is situated next to highly visited facilities like the tennis courts, picnic areas and Banco Popular Bank. The stop light there gives vehicle passengers enough time to read the messages from a reasonable distance. Banner size, 7� width by 4�height

It highlights DFMWR’s program offerings, ongoing activities and seasonal events that compose the social and recreational life of Fort Buchanan. Fort Buchanan’s largest event of the year. The family friendly outdoor event consists of live entertainment, carnival rides, games, a parade, food and beverage kiosks, artisans and a spectacular fireworks finale. Fort Buchanan’s Holiday Season kick-off event. A Christmas Parade begins the afternoon with Santa and the Three Kings greeting the community. The Antilles High School Choir and other live entertainment provide the musical backdrop. The family oriented outdoor event consists of rides, food and beverage kiosks and a variety of inflatable‘s. Facility Special Events Armed Forces Fun Run & Fitness Fair May is designated by the Department of Defense as the month to honor men and women who protect our country and defend our freedom. At Fort Buchanan, all branches of the Armed Forces are honored with a Fun Run. Runners from the Armed Forces Troops, Cadets, Veterans and Civilians run 2-miles across the base led by the Garrison Commander.

This year a Fitness Fair will accompany the Run with showcases the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Various booths are available with health and fitness representatives to talk about prevention, awareness and exercise trends. There are also several conferences and classes about health and wellness that are free of charge. Children are encouraged to attend with their parents.

The mission of the BOSS program is to enhance the morale and welfare of single soldiers, increase soldier retention, and sustain combat readiness through the fulfillment of community service, recreation, and leisure events. The events and activities of the Boss Program are planned by a council who works in conjunction with the Fort Buchanan DFMWR Advisor and Command Sergeant Major. The events are geared towards fitness, arts & crafts, outdoor recreation, library, travel, and community projects.

ANNUAL PROGRAMS Sports and Fitness

Sport and Fitness provides Fort Buchanan with a variety of recreational programs. The 17.000 sq. ft. center is equipped with its own racketball and basketball / volleyball courts with tennis courts on base. The cardiovascular and weights area are equipped with top of the line machines and it offers group fitness programs with the latest techniques. Services include lockers, showers and saunas.

Annual Runs The Sports and Fitness Program offers 4 major runs throughout the year for Active Duty, Federal, DoD employees and their Family Members. There is an average attendance ranging from 50 to 80 people per race.

Army Ten Miler Fort Buchanan Team

Starting in January of each year, the Sports and Fitness Program invites all interested active duty community members to participate in training sessions for the Army Ten Miler. This group trains under the supervision of a volunteer coach who monitors the progress of the group members. A final tryout is held in June to determine which (8) members will comprise the Fort Buchanan Team. The criteria used are based on best run times and their attendance to practices. The Army covers all travel expenses for the team. Date: October Place: Washington DC

Fort Buchanan Community Club & Conference Center

The Community Club and Conference Center serves as the cornerstone for the Directorate, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program. The facilities are transformed for various events throughout the year: New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, Easter Sunday and Mother’s Day to name a few. It is also the site for many Garrison events. This is a facility primarily here for the use of our Soldiers, Retirees and their Families. Weekends are witness to many weddings, Quinceañera (Sweet Fifteen) Parties and other Social Events. Facility with state of the art equipment with 18 lanes certified by the PBA standards. It offers a variety of adult mixed leagues that run year round and a junior program for children ages 6 to 21. Annual Programs Child, Youth and School Services CYSS Program provides quality child development options to reduce the conflict between parental responsibilities and unit requirements. It offers the military community appropriate child and youth program that are affordable, accountable and available through a seamless delivery system.

April is designated by the Army as Month of the Military Child where children are recognized for challenges faced in their families. Events are held at the installation’s school and program facilities like: educational seminars, sports and recreational activities.

Family Day and Easter Egg Hunt: Event for military children and parents, with activities like face painting, inflatables, clown show, character count carnival, among others. Annual Programs Youth Sports

Program offers opportunities for children ages 4 to 18 encouraging activities that promote social interaction, personal development, recreational and instructional skills. Sports activities are provided by trained staff and volunteer coaches. Approx. 200 players per sport

Annual Programs Golf Course

A first class course consistent with the established standards of the United States Golf Association (USGA). The nine-hole course provides an 18 hole round of over 6300 yards with a rating of 72 and a slope of 128. It has everything you might need to play a round - electric carts, pull carts and rental clubs. In addition to the course, our driving range is available with nine hitting stations along with practice greens, bunkers and a five hole par three practice course. A Snack Bar and Pro Shop are open daily offering service to golf enthusiasts. End of Month Madness: Last Friday of the month Tax Day Tournament: April

The Water Spout

The only year-round aquatics center on a U.S. Army base. This facility has a pool 0 to 4 ft. with an Octopus Ride, featuring a closed 130 ft. water slide and an open one 125 ft. , lily pads, net crossing, fun umbrellas, deck and shade areas with lounges, picnic tables.
