Becky & Colin planned an exotic vibe for their wedding, bursting with colour and wall-to-wall quirkiness at Priory House, Long Bennington.
W
e met through work and a shared love of theatre. Colin proposed on the third anniversary of our first date after Becky returned from six months working away. He’d secretly bought a ring in York five months earlier after Becky admired it in passing. The most important thing for us was having a venue that was ours for the day, had something distinctive about it and wasn’t corporate. The price you pay for that is having more responsibility and work. Our ceremony was in the venue conservatory with palm trees! They’d never used that room for the ceremony before but it was great for us because it
looked out onto the garden - it’s always worth asking about a change to routine if you want it! We were played in by our friend Hannah on the organ (Faure’s Pavanne); had readings from Colin’s children and our friend Beth Shouler (Roald Dahl and Phillip Pullman respectively); we wrote our own vows. We picked female friends and our mothers as witnesses to make sure our mothers’ names were on the wedding certificate. Everyone was given confetti and both of us, along with our wedding party, danced out into the garden to Etta James’ “Something’s Got a Hold on Me”. Becky’s dress was a 20’s influenced beaded column gown with a long train by “Art Couture” and the boutique she

bought it from said no one had ever bought that one before. It came in a shorter length but still not short enough to stop Becky having to wear platforms. Ideas of beautiful shoes went out of the window - five inch wedges from River Island saved the day and kept her dancing all night!. If we’d been able to get people out there we would have got married on top of a Riad in Marrakesh. That thought led us to try and suggest the feel of a slightly vintage Foreign Correspondents Club abroad (we’re both journalists). We were hugely helped by the already exotic garden and all the “treasures” the venue owners had brought from travelling. Even better, the house was once owned by a famous Victorian adventurer. There was a 20’s rose motif on the dress which influenced both the flowers and the custom designed ties for the men. Once we had all that, it was easy to choose the meal: Moroccan tagines, couscous and salad which the guests served themselves. Old fashioned Eton Mess and Tarte au Citron for dessert. The venue was unlike anything else we’d seen in our preferred location. It was flexible but also had a unique feel; mannequins with the owner’s dress designs on; dramatic shell mirrors; cabinets full of old fashioned toys and the beautiful garden was a massive selling point. It was competitively priced and we liked being able to bring in our own suppliers. It did mean more to think about but we loved the free rein. We chose suppliers through word of mouth, friends or by poaching them from other venues. Everyone worked hard to get us what we wanted which was great. We were most worried about making things run smoothly on the day because so much was down to us. In the end we decided to hire wedding planner Carly Carpenter as an on-theday manager and she did an amazing job. Well worth her fee. We were also worried the enormous barrel of real ale we inadvertently ordered wouldn’t get drunk. It was gone by ten! The worst thing that happened was the Prosecco being put out for the toasts rather than the Champagne. Bright side: no one complained and we ended up with loads of nice Champagne. Our favourite memories are: the first kiss; stepping away to take a breath before dancing into the garden; having

photos in front of the ruined gypsy caravan; dancing with each other, and then all our friends, to our favourite gypsy jazz band. The children actually told us their favourite part was the speeches! We enjoyed writing the vows and choosing the readings and we both made speeches which just felt “right”. Colin’s best friend in Nottingham is a woman so she and one of his brothers shared “Best Man” duties. That really worked too. His other brother was MC. Relatives flew in from the USA and people came from all over the UK which made us feel very special. We put off the “big” honeymoon to Cambodia for a few months. The idea of planning both a major trip and a wedding at the same time seemed crazy to us. Instead we set off for a lazy few days on Lindisfarne and the Northumbria Coast. Highly recommended. Our Top Tips for Brides: Lists. And more lists. And then some more lists! Tasks split in time to make them manageable and a broken-down budget to keep spending in check. Accept offers of help from family and friends. Choose a vibe, not a theme. If you have a feel in mind it’ll make you creative and choices actually become easier. And don’t worry about people judging your choices - if you’re having fun everyone else will too. Ultimately everyone loved the eccentricity of our venue. Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 27

Rachel & David’s boot-iful wedding, filled with bright bold flowers and styled around a festival theme at The Carriage Hall, Plumtree. “We met at a work conference” revealed Rachel. “We were put into a team to build our own go-kart after which we carried on playing wifi games! Two key elements were involved - fun and alcohol. We then kept meeting at London functions and finally got together six months later. It was a bit of a whirlwind secret work romance. We moved in together, fell pregnant, bought a house, had Harry, got married. We are now a family of 5 with Dave’s two other children Holly and James. 0-5 of us in just 2 years. I was a bit of a party person so I think we’ve surprised a lot of our friends and family. Our engagement was interesting to say the least! We went for a three day break to Sicily and got car jacked! Luckily only a bag was stolen but it was pretty scary.
The following day Dave took me to the top of Mount Etna, once again venturing out in the car, and then on to a cable car pulling a seven month pregnant woman almost to the top of the mountain. He proposed to me in the cold snow. He was really nervous as I was still a bit shaken up from the previous day and the last thing he wanted was an early baby being born on a mountain! I of course said yes and immediately asked “You did ask my Dad didn’t you?” which he in turn answered ‘no!’ so I made him call my Dad there and then. Dad was pretty surprised because he thought we were in London! Once we had decided on our theme, booked the church and booked the venue we found the rest of the planning quite easy. The hardest bit was deciding Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 30
where to get married. In the end we opted with my home town of Nottingham and the village of Keyworth. We were lucky to have so many talented friends who became part of our supplier list. It meant we didn’t really have to worry about sourcing suppliers. We did have bits and pieces planned but really we only started putting everything together in the last three weeks which I think stressed others out more than Dave and I. When we decided to make the wedding local it helped with friends offering to make things like a wedding tree and sourcing babysitting which we could use at my parents’ house. Once we knew the children would be looked after by family and friends it removed any worry out of the day, well, apart from every bride’s worry about the possibility of rain. Both Dave and I love music so we tried for Glastonbury tickets last October. We decided if we were lucky enough to get tickets we’d have to get married. We got tickets! We got married! To ensure Glastonbury was our honeymoon in June we had to get married in May. For Christmas presents, many of my friends got flight tickets to my hen do! Twenty seven of us in Madrid in April! The Carriage Hall was the first venue we looked at and we both loved it. They were able to accommodate everything Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 31
we wanted to make our day special. We also liked the fact it had a chill out area upstairs and plenty of outdoor space. Melanie was very helpful and patient with our relaxed approach of ‘last minute’ planning. I think we only organised the flowers about three weeks before! She was also really on board to help with our theme and we had so many compliments on how unique our venue was; all our guests loved it. We chose Kir Royal for our reception drinks served with a selection of canapes including mini chicken Caesar salads, chorizo & prawn skewer, rosemary & garlic marinade, halloumi fritters with harissa mayonnaise. For our wedding breakfast we served crisp goats cheese ravioli with sweet pepper sauce and fried basil followed by roast loin of pork with duck fat roast potatoes, sage and onion stuffing, green beans, cider cream sauce and crackling. For dessert there was white chocolate & raspberry crème brûlée served with a Carriage Hall cookie. We were toasted with Prosecco. The most memorable part of the day for Dave was when I got teary in church whilst saying ‘I do’. Getting married was so amazing! But in truth there were so many memorable moments. Having our own Keyworth connection bus with our names on display; throwing my bouquet;
the Mexican wave before the speeches and the speeches with xylobands. Plus Tony’s drawings; Dave singing to me impromptu; shots at 4.30; the photo booth; cutting the cake; the first dance with an amazing band; pizza with everything hot on it! In hindsight there are a few things we would do differently. Remembering to get buttonholes for the groom’s parents is one. Luckily we had a local florist and they quickly made some up for us. That could have been a disaster. Also we both wish we had video recorded the
speeches as they were so good, funny and entertaining and everyone used colours in the speeches so we could use the xylobands. We went to Glastonbury for our honeymoon and to Bishopstow Hotel and Spa for one night without mud although we did revceive a free mud treatment! There was no escape which was quite funny. We are planning on getting away later in the year for another break without mud. The funniest moment of the day has to be Dave singing to me and forgetting the words. It wasn’t planned and quite impromptu. That or me being twirled around on the dance floor so much I fell over in the first dance. Luckily the only other thing that went wrong was the bouquet throw. My advice - avoid hitting your friend! My top tips for brides-to-be are try to work to a budget and ask for discount. Pick your bridesmaids wisely so they can help you and keep you calm, especially the day
before. Think about what professions your friends do. Can anyone help you or share advice? We used the ushers to do most of our driving on the day including collecting Holly and bringing her to Mamas Inn where I stayed the night before with my three bridesmaids. I’d also suggest planning pieces of your wedding in small chunks. It’s a good idea to pick a theme and stick to it but don’t go overboard. One of the best things is to get a photographer you feel happy with. We were so lucky to get Chris Snowden.

e met on 30th March 2011. My parents bought the company Michael had been working for since he was 16 years old. I rang TMS and was put through to Michael and asked him to come to our office so we could discuss what we needed to work on. As I sat in the office I looked out of the window and saw a man run round the corner and head for the reception which is across the yard. I went downstairs and shouted him over. I was walking around with no shoes on and he was so hot from running - not the most romantic of first meetings! Michael, my mum and I had our meeting in which Michael sweated the whole way through! I can’t say for a moment I ever thought I would eventually marry him! The proposal wasn’t romantic in the slightest either. One of our businesses is a town centre bar and I was working there one Friday night covering for the Manager. I checked my phone and had a message saying ‘shall we get married’? I thought he was joking so didn’t really take much notice. The week after we had arranged to go to Whitby with some friends for the weekend. We walked around Whitby and Michael suggested looking in a jewellers shop. He bought me a vintage engagement ring and said we should make it official. We’d booked the Monday off work but when Monday morning arrived Michael and I went to work and Michael went to see my Dad to ask for his permission. He knew he’d done it the wrong way round but still wanted to make sure it was ok with him! Planning our wedding was very daunting at first. I went to my first wedding fair with my parents as Michael was working away. I was so overwhelmed with everything I panicked. I decided I needed to take my time and think about what we wanted and what suited us best. I wanted to take one thing at a time so my mum advised us to pick a venue first as that may influence other things. Once we’d picked our venue everything else just seemed to follow, with a tremendous amount of help from Belvoir Castle and Jane in particular. My mum was a massive help - she and my Matron of Honor did a great job of organising me!
Choosing Belvoir led us in the direction of a vintage styled wedding. Belvoir Castle was our inspiration. I had never wanted a contemporary style wedding and wasn’t really sure what I wanted until we saw the castle. Then it seemed to fall into place. Even the colours were dictated by the castle as we wanted everything to be in keeping with the decor and surroundings. I’d been adamant I wasn’t having pink but of course I ended up with vintage pinks! I think you have to open up your mind to all possibilities when planning your wedding. You can’t close anything off as it may work in the end. For example with dresses. I tried on forty-six! My mum made me try every style, shape and colour just so I knew for definite what I wanted. Hopefully you should only get married once so why not try them all on! We fell totally in love with Belvoir. The whole castle is so beautiful with its amazing views. For us it was ‘real’ whereas so many of the other venues we looked at seemed to be trying to be something they weren’t. On the evening of our rehearsal, it was the first time the rest of the bridal party had seen the castle. They all said they were completely overwhelmed. My Matron of Honour was in tears as she got out of her car! We also realised how privileged we were to have been able to get married in such a special place. Whenever we drive down the A1 now and see the castle in the distance I look at it in wonder that we actually had our wedding in that amazingly beautiful place. During the drinks reception we served canapés: pressed ham hock, duck liver and pickled carrot, queenie scallops,
celeriac and apple, tea smoked chicken, and njuda crispy onions and soft boiled quail egg, crispy leeks and smoked salt. For the Wedding Breakfast we served chicken liver parfait for our first course with spiced fruit jam and brioche and for the vegetarians we chose assiette of English summer vegetables and soft boiled Quail’s egg. We both love chicken liver parfait and always choose it when it is on the menu. For our main course we served braised beef cheek, pancetta dauphinoise and purple sprouting broccoli, and for the vegetarian option we chose hay baked artichoke, warm beetroot salad and butternut puree. For dessert we chose a trio of desserts with blueberry and white chocolate brulee, plum bakewell and cherry and vanilla parfait. The children had their own table where they could make their own pizza for their main course and for dessert they had knickerbocker glory. To drink we chose Prosecco and for the children and those not drinking alcohol we served Belvoir Pressé. In the evening we had a sharing table which included meat, fish, breads, salads and all the relevant accompaniments plus a large cheese cake with a selection of cheeses from Marks & Spencer. I don’t think we can choose a most memorable part of the day as it was all so great. The weather was perfect; blue skies which looked brilliant against the yellow stone of the castle. For me, getting ready in the King’s Rooms was special. My Matron of Honour stayed with me at my parents’ house the night before and we travelled the forty minutes to Belvoir after breakfast; my brother had picked up the other bridesmaids. I do remember waking up and she was looking at me, a massive smile on her face and excited. Then over breakfast I gave my parents the thank you gifts I’d bought them. My mum, a locket with a message engraved on it and inside a photo of the two of us on my hen night, and my dad, a pocket watch with an engraving. That was quite emotional. I loved the excitement of arriving and heading to the rooms where the dresses were waiting for us. From my vantage point I was able to watch people arriving; sat in the window with a glass of prosecco watching them all was lovely. I had my three best friends and their
daughters as bridesmaids and flower girls along with my husband’s niece, so it was quite a busy morning. I thought I would be so nervous but everything was very calm and organised. Probably a little too laid back! If I was to do anything differently I would probably make sure I was ready earlier. Everything was so relaxed I hadn’t realised the time and Rochelle my make-up artist was saying I should really get into my dress! If I had been ready earlier I could have taken my time savouring being in my dress. It may seem like you have plenty of time but all of a sudden it’s ten past two and you’re ten minutes late! The funniest moment of the day was when we knelt at the altar in the chapel. Michael had stickers made for the soles
of his shoes with our TMS Company logo as there were quite a few of our work colleagues there. Everyone found that amusing. My dad was quite jubilant in saying ‘I do’ when the question was asked ‘who gives this woman’ and one of my husband’s best men was slightly choked at the beginning of his speech which amused us all and was very sweet. Whilst we were saying our vows I became a bit emotional and had to stop for a minute to collect myself. Michael had the tissues ready for me in his pocket! All our friends know I cry a lot so I don’t think it came as a surprise to anyone. In fact I think they were expecting it! In all honesty I can’t think of anything that went wrong. The whole day flowed
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 37
and was so perfect even down to the weather. The day before and day after it was quite cold and rained a little but the wedding day itself was perfect, all blue skies, sun and warm. I think the fact Belvoir Castle are so professional in all their planning stopped anything from going wrong, or if it did, I certainly didn’t know about it. It all went perfectly and they handled everything. Everyone was where they needed to be and Jane liaised with all the suppliers so they did what they were supposed to do at the times they were supposed to do it. I’m sure the castle team were doing a lot of running around behind the scenes making sure the day was exactly as it needed to be for us, our family and our friends.
My first piece of advice for Brides-ToBe is to take in every moment; from start to end. Every moment of your wedding planning right up until the big day will all go towards the memories you have of your wedding. Enjoy and appreciate every step, from your first venue viewing to the last drink on your wedding night. It isn’t just the wedding day itself which makes your memories, it’s food tasting, engagement shoots, listening to bands, dress fittings, days shopping with your bridesmaids. One of my fondest memories is the day before the wedding. Just me and my mum, collecting my dress and taking it to the castle and going for lunch. It was such a special day; I wish I’d known it at the time. It was my mum, the day before my wedding, who gave me this advice. We were dropping my wedding dress off at the castle and were in the King’s Rooms with Jane. Mum stopped me and told me to take it all in, each and every moment as these moments make your memories. She was so right. I remember standing at the altar (a moment caught on our video by Perfect Moment Films), while everyone was singing ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’ and I stopped singing to just listen to the choir. I turned and looked at all our guests who were smiling back at me and I stopped Michael from singing and urged him to do the same. I could hear my mum telling me “take it all in” and that’s just what I wanted to do; just to take a moment and think to myself ‘this is MY wedding’. The day goes so fast and hopefully you’ll never do it again, so you both need to make time to take it all in. Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 38
Meeting Rachael and Ian Connerton our photographers and getting to know them; that was also so important. Get to know your photographer(s). They will be with you for the whole day from start to finish. The more you know each other and are comfortable around each other, they become part of your day rather than people on the sidelines taking pictures. They became friends. I relied a lot on Rachael that day to help me along as she was always with me. The relationship between us must have been quite evident as others were asking Rachael to ask me about things! So many people complimented Rachael and Ian saying how outstanding they were and how they were very much part of the wedding. Through the planning of our wedding I would like to think we made three new friends, Jane from Belvoir Castle who helped us so much with the planning and on the day and Rachael and Ian Connerton, who were just fantastic, we couldn’t have asked for more from them. After the wedding we spent an afternoon with Rachael and Ian viewing our photos. It was lovely as they provided nibbles and refreshments for us too. It was another memory for us as we were able to relive the day with them and my parents. Then we picked our album cover and the photos we wanted in the album. Rachael even hand delivered the album to our house which is about an hour away from hers - along with some cakes! If you have the right people around you (which we were so lucky to have), it makes so much difference. We are very lucky to have had some amazing people involved in our wedding, especially my mum and dad who made it all possible and have always supported us. We flew to Barbados for our honeymoon on the Monday morning after the wedding. We weren’t too impressed when we came back to a house decorated in toilet roll and covered in rice!

THE DESIGNER LIFE:
suzanne neville
Known as one of Europe’s leading designers of bridal and evening wear, award winning British designer Suzanne Neville is celebrating her 25th Anniversary. Her stunning gowns have been worn by Tess Daly and Elle Macpherson to name a few but now, talking exclusively to Buckinghams, ‘Nevsie’ talks about her life, likes, dislikes, penchant for Diet Coke and face-timing with Kate Winslet. It’s all in a days work.
S
uzanne, tell us something about your background. How did you get started in the wedding dress business? I began making wedding dresses for friends whilst studying at the London College of Fashion and it just grew from there. I started the business with a Princes Trust grant. It’s what I’d
always wanted to do and it’s hard to believe it’s 25 years ago now. There are never enough hours in the day to get as much done as I would like because it’s always so busy. Creating patterns is my biggest passion and seeing brides on their big day. Does the responsibility of your business ever scare you? It doesn’t scare me but I am aware of the huge responsibility it holds. It’s a real honour to dress so many brides for the most important day of their lives. How do you start your day? I start my day with a coffee and a bowl of Granola.
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 43
I’m a morning person so I’m often up at 5am and find it hard to stay up past 10pm!! What do you do to unwind? I don’t really unwind. I’m a bit of a workaholic but I do have the odd glass of fizz. Champagne is my favourite tipple. Favourite meal? A beautifully cooked lemon sole is my fave. Favourite colour? Black. It’s pretty much all I wear. Favourite mug? My Cath Kidson giant mug. Pet hate? Things that don’t line up straight - I’m a bit of a perfectionist.

Are you a dogs or cats person? Cats! I have 4! They’re my favourite animal! Who is your favourite Avenger? Is Iron Man an Avenger? If so him - I love Robert Downey Jr. Do you have a nickname? My business partner calls me Nevsie! Favourite holiday destination? Italy, New York, anywhere I can enjoy a short break. Favourite biscuit? A bourbon. Favourite shoes? My Valentino’s! Favourite author? I don’t have time to read! Which is your favourite Quality Street? The green triangle.
What do you want for Christmas this year? Another diamond encrusted ring (I don’t ask for much!) What is your proudest moment? Having my children. What’s your favourite memory from your wedding? The vows, It was such a romantic moment. I had a winter wedding at Highclere Castle, otherwise known as Downton Abbey, and the setting made the whole experience even
“ ...I can follow a recipe but I’m no Nigella!” Coke or Pepsi? Diet coke; I’m a little obsessed. Do you like Marmite? I love it! Can you cook and if so what’s your speciality? I can follow a recipe but I’m no Nigella. Most famous person you’ve ever met? I’ve met many celebrities but the only time I felt starstruck was when I was on face-time with Kate Winslet during a fitting. Secret crush? Aiden Turner of course! If you could invite four people to dinner who would they be? Valentino, Joanna Lumley, Graham Norton and Prince Harry. Favourite room in your house and why? My bedroom because I love sleeping. What colour is your kitchen? It’s neutral. Favourite household appliance? My Nespresso machine. Are you a gardener? No but I have a wonderful gardener! I love it because she plants all sorts of beautiful flowers and it’s a lovely surprise when they flower. Can you keep a houseplant alive for more than a month? Nope - that’s why I need a gardener!

more memorable. If you weren’t doing what you do now what would you be doing? I can’t imagine anything else. It would need to be fashion related. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be? I would be taller. How would you like to be remembered? For making lots of people happy.

Suzanne Neville
Portrait Collection 2017
British Bridal Designer Suzanne Neville showcased her 25th Anniversary Portrait Collection with an exclusive event at HM Tower of London. The 2017 Portrait Collection has an eclectic mix of styles, fabrics, and silhouettes, with over forty incredible new bridal gowns in a collection as diverse as it is unique. Soft mikados, taffeta and beaded fabrics, combined with original pattern work, gives each dress its very own individual identity, shown together in a breathtaking collection. Suzanne commented: “Even after 25 years, I have enjoyed designing this collection the most. There really is a dress for every bride, whether a very British classic look or more of an international look which is more revealing and influences the brides to be more adventurous. This has given me a lot more freedom to design and be even more creative this year. Girls are all wanting that something ‘different’ which means it is now very hard to predict which dress will be the most popular. I’ve spent months designing exquisite embroidery and searching for the right lace from the best mills in the world. The Portrait Collection has a strong theme running through the fabrics, with a slightly baroque feel. The stunning damask fabrics fuse into the filigree lines of portrait frames and galleries. This is the biggest collection I have ever created and I could have kept going! Each dress has been carefully thought out and designed specifically to flatter the figure.” View the full collection at suzanneneville.com Top Left: Blue Rembrandt from £6500, Top Right: Camille from £2150 Bottom Right: Matisse from £3375

he Dream Within was filmed on location at Prestwold Hall in Leicestershire; a collaborative film and photo shoot featuring suppliers from Buckinghams exclusive supplier list and local wedding businesses from across Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The project began in Leicester over a networking dinner at Frankie & Bennie’s between Chris Buckley at Perfect Moment Films and our editor, EJ Wright. Both had creative projects rattling around in their heads and a chance conversation revealed a shared goal. A pen and two paper napkins later and between them they’d worked out the outline to a wedding shoot with a difference; not only photography but videography to tell a fictional story and create a vehicle to bring to the fore the talents of some of the region’s best wedding suppliers. Written, directed and beautifully
filmed by Chris Buckley at Perfect Moment Films with Assistant Camera Operator, Pete Hewes at Cine Collective, the film is the story of a young girl who, like every little girl, dreams the perfect dream of her wedding day. To make the dream a reality Buckinghams co-ordinated an enviable line-up of top class wedding suppliers to work their magic at one of their favourite venues, Prestwold Hall in Leicestershire. With her opulent rooms, winding staircases and endless corridors Prestwold Hall proved to be the perfect playground in which to set a childhood adventure. Filmed over 3 days the filming schedule was divided into two slots - the opening story, featuring child actors Ruby Buckley (no relation!) and Stevie Beau Reece Mee and ‘The Dream Within’ featuring Rachel Bowler and Josh Oxley Adams. “We had a very tight schedule to work to and there was no time for rehearsals” said Chris.
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 50
“Styling the rooms was going to be the biggest challenge from a time point of view, especially as we’d chosen a white carpet for the aisle. The team wore blue plastic shoe covers for most of the day to avoid making muddy footprints and ruining the look! We were really lucky with the weather too. It was perfect for the storyline. Wet and windy for the opening story shoot and bright sunshine for the wedding shoot.” But for any dream wedding their needs to be a dream dress so Buckinghams headed straight to Ian Stuart Bride. “We’re already massive Ian Stuart fans here at Buckinghams” said EJ “and when
we’re looking for a dream wedding dress with plenty of theatre he’s the go-to guy. The shoot team chose ‘Savannah’ in gold and although we don’t have any bridesto-be in the office right now we still got the ‘my wedding dress has arrived!’ moment when the courier knocked on the door. When something that beautiful arrives in the office we can’t help but get excited about a shoot. As soon as we unzipped the dress bag we knew it was the perfect choice. The fabric has incredible movement and the shot of the train sweeping across the floor just before our bride walks down the aisle is still one of my favourite moments in the film”. So with the film side of things well and truly underway the team were ready to organise the photography element of the project. “Chris was responsible for the film shoot” said EJ “whereas I was responsible for the photo shoot. It was the first time we’d both worked together but it turned out we made a pretty good team because we still felt comfortable running ideas past each other knowing each had an individual agenda but the ultimate goal as a whole was united. It was my job to organise the photographer so I invited Samantha Hook Photography onto the shoot. I knew Sam’s work and felt her style would suit the film’s theme and tones. Her images from the shoot were stunning and it was really hard to choose which ones to feature. We also felt it would be a missed opportunity not to capture ‘behind the scenes’ so I invited Ian Bursill who is the king of documentary photography. Working with Ian was a dream. I always say he is one of the nicest most easy going guys in our industry and he really lived up to that on this project.” Chris showreeled his favourite shots from Ian’s ‘behind the scenes’ images at a mini ‘film premiere’ which he organised for the cast and crew. “Ian got some fabulous shots of everyone working to pull the project together” said Chris “it was great fun to relive the project over again.” Over 14 months of preparation went into the project but finally The Dream Within was ready for release in April 2016. In total over twenty amazing businesses came together to show what can be achieved. They created something truly unique and undeniably beautiful.

any flower varieties are now available throughout the year however they aren’t always good value. Seasonal flowers offer better value and quality and a timely reminder of the time of year you were married. Using fragrant flowers and foliages evokes everlasting memories of your wedding day. If there is a particular flower you love the colour, shape or texture of your florist can advise regarding alternatives. For example, peonies are a popular wedding flower but are only available between April and July. An alternative flower is a garden rose called Pink O’hara; a perfect substitute; pale pink, fragrant and blowsy, with a piped centre. Roses are always a favourite wedding flower for many brides-to-be. Over my fourteen years as a florist there have been many developments in the shape, colour and fragrance of the humble rose; nude pinks, greys and beiges all work perfectly in today’s trendy colour palettes. There are great varieties available too. Mentha roses, a gentle nude pink, earl grey, softest grey/lilac and cappuccino vintage/sepia shade. Choosing an unusual colour rose to compliment your wedding style adds interest and individuality. Roses are thought to symbolise love and beauty. There are over 3000 varieties of roses commercially grown, many available all year round. Peonies and hydrangeas are also always in demand. Ranunculus, one of my personal favourites, is a relative of the buttercup, multi-petaled and available in solid and
bi-colours from the deepest maroon to the palest lemon. Ranunculus make great buttonholes and dress corsages. What was recently considered old fashioned varieties such as carnations and dahlia have made a comeback and fit well for a vintage themed wedding with great new colours too such as plum, deep purple, lilac, pale peach and antique pinks. I’ve always had a passion for foliage. The different shapes, textures, colours and fragrances are fascinating. Over the many consultations I carry out each year I am noticing an increase in requests for rustic, woodland designs, with a ‘just-foraged’ finish. Favourites are olive, trailing vines, eucalyptus, ferns, succulents plus branches, rosemary, mint and sage are also popular. We are also seeing a reduction in the use of jars as table arrangements. Instead brides are keeping with the eclectic vibe but using more glamorous vases and
will set the mood for the day, the era and the season and choose accent colours to bring out the best in the bridesmaid dresses. For example purple dresses with purple flowers could make regrettable photographs. Remember you don’t have to be a flower expert. It’s simply about what you like. When I first meet a couple I always start with developing the bridal bouquet. This often influences other decorations in the church and venue. And don’t compromise on your own bouquet. Always have exactly what you love; if necessary compromise elsewhere after all the happy couple are the most photographed thoughout the day! Visual aids help develop designs. Fabric swatches to help co-ordinate flower varieties. A photograph of your dress will enable your florist to advise on the best bouquet shape and then they can develop a sense of your vision and create a more personalised proposal. Check if the florist knows your venue too. If not, suggest a site visit. Communicate your likes and dislikes; don’t be afraid to express your opinion; remain flexible. As professional florists we can be creative with a range of flowers to style your day. When it comes to your budget don’t spread it too thin. It’s better to have fewer larger impact displays than lots of small bits here and there that lose impact. Check what props and accessories your florist has to to help personalise your wedding day decorations. Be prepared to talk budgets. Florists can advise how best to maximise it.
EXPERT ADVICE
Wedding Flowers
Zoe Richmond-Dixon at Zinc Floral Design guides you through the options table settings such as silver mercury, vintage golds, coppers and antique mismatched glassware. Gold and copper is increasingly popular and works well for every season. Mix pale pinks with peach in gold bowls for a warm summer wedding or crisp white, silver and muted greys with silver mercury glassware for a cool winter wedding. Try woodland themes, bark vases, wood slices and potted plants as favours. Your wedding flowers will be featured heavily throughout your photographs. Be aware that all flowers are not the same; like anything else, they are graded so always choose a florist who will use the best quality flowers, especially for your bridal bouquet. Using good quality flowers will ensure they last well throughout the day. Have a general idea about the look and mood you want to create for your day be it simple, classic, lavish, romantic or natural and relaxed. Have a colour scheme in mind, often influenced by your bridesmaid dresses or the interior of your venue. A colour theme Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 59

Are artificial flowers any cheaper than real flowers?
No, not all the time. You can buy some fabulous artificial flowers which look very similar to the real McCoy but they are often a similar price. The obvious bonus to artificial flowers is that they last much longer than fresh flowers although you don’t get the fabulous scent. They’re a great substitute though if you want to keep your bouquet after your big day! It’s also a
great option if you’re getting married abroad and don’t want the hassle of sourcing an overseas florist!
2
Can I do my own church and reception flowers?
Absolutely! My advice is let your florist know so they can order extra flowers in just for you as you’ll want the colour scheme to match throughout. However as flowers are perishables please take these notes into
account. Firstly think about the weather. If you have to leave them in a marquee which is hot and humid or anywhere that frost can get at them it will not do the flowers any good and all your hard work will go to ruin! Flowers obviously can’t be arranged a week before so think how busy you will be on the run up to your wedding and will you have the time? If you haven’t any experience or worked with flowers before it won’t be a quick process.
3
Are David Austin roses worth the extra money?
It depends mostly on your budget as they are pricey blooms! They do however look fabulous and the scent and petal formation is divine. It’s always best to chat this over with your florist and see if you can squeeze a few in with your budget. If you can’t have them everywhere
why not just use them in the bridal work and use a lovely rose for the table centres and church. There are always options and coordinating colours is usually ok!
4
Do you have a price list?
I personally don’t simply b e c a u s e throughout the year the price of flowers changes, espcially around Valentines Day when
just about anything red sky rockets in price! Also every bride is different and likes a personal selection for their wedding design so keeping prices the same would be quite difficult as every wedding is different. Instead I offer a complimentary consultation after which I put a quote together for the bride to consider. She can then come back to me and we’ll go through the finer details of what she wants. flowersbyphilippa.co.uk
Reality Check
B
with documentary wedding photographer Ian Bursill
efore I started shooting weddings ten years ago, every wedding I’d been to as a guest had one thing in common - lots of standing around after the ceremony watching some poor wedding photographer herd guests into place. Worse was seeing the results maybe the very first time you’ve seen it, the Reservoir Dogs groomsmen photo looked pretty cool but it very quickly went the way of the horizontally held bride. But it doesn’t have to be like this. There are fantastic photographers who will spend quite a bit of time setting up amazing group pictures and portraits. They’ll have lights and assistants, and the pictures wouldn’t look out of place in a glossy lifestyle magazine. This approach,
and the results, might be right for some couples, but there’s also a growing number of people who prefer the majority of their wedding photography to be natural and unposed, but who also want a small number of portraits and some family group pictures. I find that five to eight group pictures is usually enough to capture both families and the bridal party. If those involved are prepared and gathered right after the ceremony or at some point halfway through the drinks reception, this needn’t take more than ten or fifteen minutes. Somewhere with a plain background and good even light is an ideal location. Then, later in the day, sometimes around sunset, another ten minutes can produce a good variety of lovely portraits. But I’m a documentary photographer
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 62
and I’m going to add some story telling elements to your portraits and groups. With portraits I often like to include some of the environment. Like the portrait of Nadine & Rob at the Ladywood Estate near Oakham (bottom left). I wanted to take them into the beautiful gardens at Ladywood and luckily that day the light was amazing. But it’s the un-contrived image they love (bottom right), even though it looks posed. It was taken just after their ten minute portrait session whilst they stood chatting outside the pavilion, patiently waiting while guests were taking their seats for the meal. I stood inside the pavilion anticipating that something romantic might happen - and it did. The same can also work with groups. A photographer who thinks about the content of a picture rather than just
seeing pretty shapes and colours, will use the knowledge they’ve gleaned about the couple to find and include relevance. Here is a fairly straightforward picture of a bride and her bridesmaids (top left). It’s in shade due to harsh sunlight out in the open, but the hall behind was important to the couple as that’s where they studied, lodged and met while at university in Oxford so that dictated the
location for the groups. But the picture they love (top right) and have chosen for a full page in their album has all the same people, and a few others, but there’s an amazing moment happening and a group dynamic, as well as being a great story-telling image. I hope these four images have illustrated that by commissioning a documentary photographer you can
still get great group shots that satisfy your parents need for a framed picture on the mantelpiece but you needn’t sacrifice the story telling ability of your photographer, or spend hours and hours away from your guests on an extended BURSILL.COM photoshoot. ur shoot was initially inspired by the pink My Fair Lady-esque gown I had recently created and the ethereal location. Each piece captures the themes that repeat throughout my work: colour, romance, drama and a mix of period inspirations: Elizabethan, Edwardian and French Revolution. The pink dress is romantic froth with dramatic silhouette whilst the opera cape was inspired by a creation I had made previously for a client who wanted a ‘Shakespeare in Love’ theme. We paired the cape with a lace gown by Katya Katya Shehurina. The design process behind my pink ‘Eliza’ gown is quite unusual. It was originally made for another shoot. I knew the photographer’s taste and the model’s look and with reference to the chosen setting, much like designing for a client, I designed the dress to a particular brief; on this occasion one I had set for myself. With consideration to the style and essence of Emily Soto’s photography I knew the very gamine, delicate, red headed model, Alexa Taylor, would look fabulous in pink and I had a desire to make her curvaceous. And Alexa reminded me so much of Audrey Hepburn. I have always loved Audrey in the black & white race dress in My Fair Lady rocking an hourglass
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 66
silhouette against her usual body type. Further influenced by the romantic pink confection Eliza wears when she visits Mrs Higgins for tea I made the decision to create this great silhouette in tulle in case it rained, which it did, so unlike silk, the dress would be fine. Herein the practicalities of shooting al fresco in the garden during an English Summer! I also created the pink hat and umbrella and one of my handmade tiaras was teamed with the opera cape to complete the look. chantalmallett.com

ou’re engaged and there’s an exciting time yet to come! As a wedding planner I love listening to my couples’ engagement stories and the story is often as unique as the couple. In whatever way he, or perhaps you, asked the big question, this is the beginning of your story together and a new chapter in your lives! Engagement traditions have changed dramatically over recent years. Strict engagement etiquette in place many years ago is far more relaxed today and even the most traditional engagements offer plenty of opportunity for couples to integrate their own style and personality. There are however a few things that will never change no matter
how and when you get engaged. Naturally, you’ll begin scouring the latest bridal magazines, sampling cakes,
“...it’s time to get your engagement ring appraised and insured”.
lusting over wedding band displays at Tiffany’s and eyeing up those Jimmy Choos. I know because I’ve been there! Planning your day is fun. I do it professionally and wouldn’t change it for the world but there are practicalities
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 68
you should keep in mind when starting out on your wedding planning journey Let’s start at the top. Who do you tell first and how? Before you start announcing the big news on social media tell your nearest and dearest. Make it special. Consider hosting an informal, relaxed engagement party and celebrate with your family and friends. This is the perfect time for both families to come together and share the special moment. There’ll be many occasions coming up that call for a celebration but your engagement time is special and just as important and worth cherishing as the big day itself. Whilst we’re talking about that ring, a jewellery piece that is so dear to you, it’s time to get your engagement ring appraised and insured. The same should
Geoff Kirby Photography

apply for your wedding band. When selecting your wedding band it is sensible to check it fits nicely with your engagement ring if you’re planning on wearing both together. Once you’ve officially announced your engagement, everyone will want to know the wedding date. Setting the date can be challenging but you may find it easier with the help of these decision making factors. Is there a specific date that means something to you? Your first date or your engagement day? A date with significance will not only make it more special but help with remembering it in years to come for those anniversary celebrations! A more practical approach to choosing your date is to consider your finances. Many venues and suppliers offer a reduction in their fees for weddings taking place outside the ‘high season’ which is traditionally weekends between June-September. The month of December is an exception and considered a prime wedding month due to the holiday celebrations. Fridays are also now in high demand as couples make a weekend of celebrations. The weekday you choose may also be influenced by where your ‘out of town’ guests will be travelling from. If you have overseas guests a Saturday would be well received giving guests the chance to settle in and relax after travels on Friday. Sunday celebrations may also work if the following Monday is a bank holiday for example. Religious reasons may also influence your choice of day and date. Once you’ve set the date, let everyone know. Get started on your guest list and send out an engagement announcement either informally by email, the traditional way by post or get creative and create your very own website where you’ll keep your guests upto-date with all the events going on for your big day. Add maps, details on transport and accommodation and tips for sightseeing for your overseas guests. After the wedding, invite your guests to share their photos of the day on your site which will become a lovely keepsake for everyone to cherish together with you. In all the excitement there is one thing not to be forgotten - your other half! I know this may be obvious but it’s so easy to loose track of what’s really important. Make your wedding planning a project you work on together and more importantly don’t let your together time be ‘all about the wedding’. Take time off from wedding planning and make those days just about the two of you! In the next issue: “Gathering Your Wedding Team. Which suppliers to choose, when and why?” Tina Smyth is owner at Tina Smyth Wedding Design, London and offers a personal approach to bespoke wedding planning; a service uniquely tailored to each couple. Visit your nearest John Lewis Store or book online at johnlewis.com/ our-services. Whether your style is classic or contemporary find a fit to flatter with our tips. TIP 1: Highlight your best parts. Adrianna Papell’s Sheath Dress (top middle) will accentuate natural curves. Play around with a scooped neckline to draw attention to the small of your waist. To give the illusion of height opt for a fascinator to give you a little extra lift. A heel makes every woman feel good so Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 70

ensure yours is the right fit. Weddings can be a long day! TIP 2: Coast’s ‘Alessia’ will really set you apart this season. The dress is the best of both worlds giving the illusion of a sleek top and A-line skirt combination. You do not always have to opt for a jacket - a textured shrug creates a playful yet stylish silhouette. Empire lines are a great option to flatter the tummy. If you lack curves opt for a more structured fabric for a more proportioned figure. And remember, detailed outfits call for simple accessories. JOHNLEWIS.COM

Something New
Modern Tastes
Watercolour paints, wafer flowers, metallics, edible petals and chocolate work - these are just some of the techniques that we are using on our cakes at Cottonwood Bakery this season. We are following the truly inspirational trends coming from Australia and the United States which are so exciting! This means we are able to offer a more unique design to couples who want a stand-out wedding cake. We love adding elements of these ideas to a more traditional creation. In all, we really hope to give brides something totally different to consider when choosing their cake. We’re not just concentrating on the outside of the cake either - although that is often the most fun stage of the cake creating process! We’ve always prided ourselves on flavour and quality so we have a keen eye on new recipe trends too. It seems that any cake-combos go at the moment which is fantastic because we love baking and tasting recipes in our kitchen. Some of the most recent flavours we’ve been working on include ‘London Fog’, ‘Strawberries & Champagne’ and ‘Cinnamon Lemon’.
Bradgate Flowers is located in the picturesque village of Newtown Linford and covers mainly Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire but is happy to travel further afield should it be requested. Our lastest styles have been very mixed from shabby chic to more luxury show stopping designs, but brides shouldn’t just choose a florist based on what they’ve seen from photos on Facebook. Always ask your florist if they are flexible in style as an experienced florist should be able to adapt to the style a bride is asking for. Silk flowers just lately have been frequently asked for, and good quality silks will produce an equally beautiful bridal bouquet as well as incorporating silk with fresh to enable the use of flowers that would be out of season. Showcasing at Shearbsy Bath, Brooksby Hall & Belvoir Castle Wedding Fairs It’s an exciting time for wedding cakes and Cottonwood Bakery can hopefully offer at least some of these contemporary ideas to future brides and grooms. Sweet Favour Kisses
It’s been a busy twelve months at Maison Des Macarons since our inception with demand increasing month on month to what now sees a very busy order book! Our range of flavours for our macarons has extended from an initial eight to over 25 and we’ve introduced a couple of new delights to our stable. The yummy “meringue kisses” were initially introduced for our clients who had guests with nut allergies but they are now proving to be very popular as Wedding Favours in their own right. Sandwiched together with our chocolate ganache filling they are drizzled with fresh fruit purée. We have also introduced a stunning square macaron tower which we brought in from France. Our macaron towers, square or round, can also be offered with gorgeous cake bases supplied by Victoria’s Cake Company. These towers can hold from 70 to over 200 macarons of mixed flavours and can, of course, be colourthemed to your wedding. Don’t forget, our macarons be they for towers or wedding favours are made from only the very finest ingredients including our home-made fruit purees. Why not pop in and see us for a private tasting!

Expert’s Tip: Are Your Cake Flowers Poisonous? Buckinghams Recommended Cake Maker, Helen Alborn Cakes, Explains How Using The Wrong Flowers On Your Wedding Cake Could Poison Your Guests! Fresh flowers are the centrepiece of many weddings; they add vibrancy to a room and are essential for traditions like the bridal bouquet. However, these beautiful blossoms may not be suitable for all aspects of your big day. As flowers and weddings go hand-inhand it is unsurprising that wedding cakes regularly incorporate them into their designs. Floral decorations may come in the form of sugar, silk or fresh cuttings. Each can be beautiful but often one important point is overlooked - are they actually safe to put on a cake? An abundance of dummy cakes can be found adorned with a whole host of real floral embellishments. These displays may be food for the eyes but would not sit so well on the stomach. Many flowers and leaves contain compounds that are in fact toxic and a risk if in contact with edible items. Often these plants needn’t be consumed to cause harm, their sap or hairs alone can produce negative effects and in severe cases just touching them can be an irritant. Here are some examples of flowers to avoid on your cake: Peonies, Hydrangeas, Calla Lilies, Lily of the Valley, Chrysanthemum, Ivy, Bluebells, Daffodil, Foxglove, Iris. You can check for more harmful plants by visiting the rhs.org.uk website and searching their advice section. Even if some flowers are edible, the majority are not produced with food hygiene in mind. Flowers are regularly treated with herbicides and pesticides to ensure they look their very best but these chemicals are not fit for consumption. But don’t be put off. Any fresh flowers, herbs or petal confetti obtained from the right sources can be a fabulous contemporary alternative to expensive sugar work and really bring a cake to life. There are over thirty types of edible flowers that are both harmless and visually stunning. Organic, food-safe suppliers are the ideal but non-toxic floristry flowers are just as good if they do not rest directly on your cake. Your florist and cake designers, both experts in their individual trades, are always there to advise you. By keeping this information in mind you have the foundations for a truly beautiful creation that would brighten any celebration. All That Glitters Fran Berry, stylist at Modern Heritage Styling Tells You How To Stay On Trend & Sparkle As a venue stylist I am very lucky to meet with lots of lovely brides and grooms and discuss all of their wonderful styling ideas and requirements. Better still I get the opportunity to actually dress many of these beautiful weddings which is very exciting and a huge privilege! Over the last few years there have been lots of trends that have come and gone but a select few have been running for a while now and are not showing any sign of departing. These trends are not only super gorgeous but they are inspiring and let me unleash my inner magpie! Sequin table linen – this has to be the hottest trend around right now, whether you want to add a bit of 1920’s glamour, full on sparkle or just an element of texture to the tables. Sequin linen ticks all of the boxes and more. The way the light catches the folds is just mesmerising and when teamed with multiple candles they scream romance and sophistication. Metallics – Move over silver you’ve got competition! Copper and gold are massive at the moment in all interior design sectors and have leapt into the wedding industry with force. They are warm, colourful and a little bit different. Teamed with the sequins you just can’t go wrong. Lace – the more things change, the more they remain the same. Lace has been bang on trend for as long as I can remember and it is most definitely here to stay. It’s classy, sophisticated, detailed and neutral. It goes with anything and everything and could not be more romantic. Add only a few pearls and diamantes and it will forever remain a timeless classic. Less popular, but all the same exciting trends I have worked with lately include Steam Punk, Boho, Industrial Chic and Geometrics. It’s a very exciting time to be working in venue styling. modernheritagestyling.co.uk 07985 297572 Showcasing at Norwood Park & Belvoir Castle Wedding Fairs 2016
