THE BUCKLEY SCHOOL

Mission

The Buckley School is a dynamic, nurturing learning community committed to equity and inclusion. Our innovative teachers and challenging programs inspire creativity, courage, and collaboration. By promoting a balanced development of mind, body, and character, we encourage each student to find joy and meaning in life and make an impact in the world.

History

The Buckley School, founded in 1933 by Isabelle Buckley, is the oldest K-12 independent all-gender day school in Los Angeles. Dr. Buckley’s commitment to academics, arts, athletics, and moral education, is the foundation for the school’s current vision for Buckley graduates to become architects of the future.

LETTER FROM

The Head of School Dear Buckley Friends and Family, During the 2022-2023 school year, we celebrated our 90th anniversary, paying tribute to our dynamic history and paving the way for a bold future. Dr. Buckley’s last living child, Peter, along with other members of the Buckley family, returned to campus for Founders’ Day, helping today’s students connect to the generations of Griffins before them. We also rolled out our forward-looking strategic plan, including our vision that all students become “architects of the future,” prepared to create their own life, to shape their community, and sustain our planet. To that end, we proudly hosted our first-ever Climate Conference and South x South Buckley Arts Festival, and established a committee of faculty to explore AI and the implications for learning. We also had a record-breaking year in athletics, and wrapped up the spring with the Buckley Fair and Commencement on Gilley Field. From a breathtaking anniversary party to Party Book events and celebrations of learning, the 2022-2023 school year was filled with milestones and reminders of why we all call Buckley our home. None of this would be possible without your investment in our community! Buckley’s Annual Report on Philanthropy is one of the many ways we say thank you to each and every member of the Buckley community for their contributions. Your generosity makes Buckley possible–our faculty and staff rely on your generosity to help strengthen the community and foster growth within your students. It is through your philanthropic commitment, volunteer time, and partnership that Buckley continues to thrive. The Buckley community could not be what it is today without you, and for this we are incredibly grateful. Thank you for your ongoing love and support of Buckley. As the 2023-2024 year begins, let’s be architects, and continue to build the future together. Alona Scott Head of School

LETTER FROM

The Board Chair Dear Buckley Community, This past year during Buckley’s 90th anniversary, I had the honor of stepping into my role as board chair, a position that has allowed me to witness the love and generosity spread across the school community. It is all made possible with the guidance and support of our Head of School Alona Scott, who works tirelessly to enhance our community. The generosity that so many of you displayed during the school year was inspiring, and it gave the Board of Trustees a great sense of pride in our Buckley community. Your philanthropic efforts provide Buckley with the resources necessary to continue to nurture our students’ love for learning. Thank you all for fostering our culture of giving over the past 90 years. While celebrating our 90th anniversary this year, we also took the time to honor board member Andrea Alberini. Without her dedication and commitment, Buckley would not be Buckley. Since becoming a member of the community in 2003, she chaired numerous Parents’ Association committees, served as the Parents’ Association President in 2007-08, and has just finished her ninth and final year as a Trustee. Andrea exemplifies Buckley’s philanthropic and generous spirit. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to Buckley. I am proud of the admiration for Buckley that was shown last year and am certain that our community will continue to be a source of pride for 90 more years. Thank you, Ben Vega Chair of the Board of Trustees

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating at Buckley’s 90th Anniversary Party! The Beverly Hilton was full of excitement and an outpouring of love for the home you have all helped build at Buckley. The evening was also marked in honor of Andrea Alberini, a trustee who finished her ninth and final year of leadership during the 2022-2023 school year. Proceeds from The 90th Anniversary Party benefited Buckley’s Financial Aid Endowment. Whether you sponsored the event, attended as a guest, or purchased a page in the tribute book, your support has helped ensure Buckley’s long-term commitment to financial aid.

Your generosity helped raise over $333,000!

Years of Giving WITH THE MITCHELLS

Since 1992, Burt and Pamela Mitchell have had five of their children attend Buckley. Lily and Abby, their youngest daughters, celebrated their senior year at Buckley during the 2021-2022 school year! While here, their students met their best friends, learned valuable life lessons, and formed bonds with faculty and administrators who continue to provide them with guidance and support to this day. The school’s small, close-knit environment has been a second home to their children. As Burt said, “For us, Buckley is a neighborhood school. You can walk there, bring the lunches they forgot; it has been our kids’ second home.” Buckley’s inclusive environment is made possible by families like the Mitchells, who extend their welcome to all of the community; from helping new students find their way around campus to making sure no one is left behind for a birthday celebration, you are not alone if you have a member of the Mitchell Family by your side. Their unwavering generosity continues beyond their hospitality. The Mitchells have been active donors to the Buckley Fund every year since 1992, making them donors for 30 years! The support the Mitchell’s have provided for the school puts emphasis on their belief that, “the more you do, the better.” From generous donations to volunteering as a room parent, Buckley is so grateful to be a home for the Mitchell family!

A special thank you to the Mitchells!

Established in 1933, The Buckley School has relied upon the generosity of its community to continue to foster the growth of its Griffins. A robust and reliable annual fund offsets the cost of a Buckley education and keeps tuition increases lower. This year, Buckley was fortunate enough to have 80% donor participation from the current families on campus! This level of generosity exemplifies the nature of giving that exists in our community. All investments to the Buckley Fund allow for students to connect with one another, expand upon their curiosity, and gain a sense of excitement for new discoveries. Unrestricted donations to the Buckley Fund ensure that Buckley has the resources that allow our faculty and staff to provide the most

WHY the Griffins?

As you look over the names of donors who have generously given to the Buckley Fund during the 2022-2023 year you might notice a black or red Griffin accompanying them. The Griffin is a symbol of consecutive giving to the Buckley Fund! Those individuals who are listed with a red Griffin have consecutively given to the Buckley Fund for five to nine years. The black Griffin signified those who have been donors for 10 consecutive years or more!

Senior Class Legacy Fund Donors

The general endowment at The Buckley School is a significant source of support for the school and its mission. A gift to the endowment secures Buckley’s future and supports investments in the school’s infrastructure, faculty and professional development, student-centered programs and technology, and most importantly, financial aid for new and continuing students.

Each year, parents are asked to support the Senior Class Legacy Fund to honor their graduating senior, and to support the general endowment at Buckley. Founded in 2006, the Senior Class Legacy Fund continues to grow as alumni give in honor of their class year and as subsequent classes establish their own legacy funds. The combined impact for future generations of Buckley students will be tremendous.

Jordan Weiss Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Weiss family established the Jordan Weiss Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor their son, who passed away suddenly during his senior year. The scholarship fund celebrates Jordan and ensures his great sense of humor, energy, loyalty, and embodiment of the Buckley Commitment are always remembered. Annual financial aid awards are granted to students who embody the qualities central to Jordan’s character and who otherwise might not have the chance to attend The Buckley School. Margaret Mason Endowment Fund It can be said that the heart of the Buckley community lies within its dedicated teachers. And no greater example of this dedication is Dr. Margaret Mack Mason, World Languages Department Chair, who truly embodied the depth and soul of the Buckley commitment and what it meant to be an exceptional educator. Buckley’s world languages department thrived under the leadership of Dr. Mason for more than 20 years. Having arrived at Buckley in 1983, Dr. Mason’s presence was felt everywhere on campus. She taught french, english, humanities and went on to work for the college counseling department. Today Dr. Mason’s rich legacy lives on through her incredible bequest to Buckley. Through her generosity, the Margaret Mason Endowment Fund for Professional Development was established in 2019. Her gift, combined with the additional match from a handful of Buckley families, grows each year, and will leave an impact on generations of Buckley students to come. The Mason Family Trust

On July 17, 2023, the Buckley community lost a beloved Lower School science teacher, KITTY HUMPHREY. Known for her kindness and humor, Kitty gave the scores of students who passed through her room a passion for science and nature. When she came to Buckley in 1992, she founded the Tate Science Center in Lower School and grew the program from there– right through this past spring, when she saw the completion of the new Lower School Science Lab. Kitty was committed to creating a sense of belonging in her classroom. Her shelves and walls are full of books and posters highlighting the achievements and life stories of underrepresented groups. In Kitty’s classroom, children saw themselves and their families reflected in the curriculum. Respectful, wise, compassionate, and always funny, she was a pleasure to work with. Those who knew her will forever remember her by these qualities, along with her dedication to teaching and students, many of whom would come by to visit her after moving on to the Middle and Upper School or graduating. Kitty is survived by her two daughters, Heather and Lower School associate science teacher Holly. It’s not an understatement to say that Kitty Humphrey will be profoundly missed by us all.

After five years in the Admission Office as the associate admission director, MOLLY WOODEN retired from Buckley this June. Working primarily in Lower School admissions, Molly also became known throughout the community as a ninth-grade student advisor, car door opener during morning drop-off, and a regular presence at student performances and events. Molly is setting off on new adventures with plans to serve as a trustee at Dennis Friends Foundation and setting up a new home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Thank you Molly for leading us in welcoming new community members to Buckley over the years. You have helped our school become the place that it is today. Best wishes from Buckley!

This fall our beloved DEI director, MATT BALANO, passed away. Since he came to Buckley during the summer of 2022, his passion for DEI work and his compassion for bringing along others in that work helped build immeasurable capacity in our community. His patience, intellect, humor, and empathy showed us all what a truly inclusive spirit looks like. In one year, Matt showed us all enough wisdom, courage, and bigheartedness to inspire us for years and years to come. His legacy at Buckley will live on in those who had the privilege of getting to know him, and in the values that shone through him.

MESSAGE FROM

Alumni Engagement Board President Grant Chang ’89 Dear Alumni, It was an eventful year for our community, as we celebrated Buckley’s 90th anniversary and welcomed the return to our in-person alumni programming schedule for the first time in three years! We are grateful for your dedication, the leadership and guidance of Shelly and Joyce in the Advancement Office, Chad Lasdon ’97, our alumni board VP, and the tireless efforts of all members. We also wish Shelly the best in her future endeavors after Buckley. With our in-person programming making its long-awaited comeback, we were excited to launch The Griffin Club Happy Hour series, which presented a wonderful opportunity to connect with so many alums in a new way. A new series of dates will be forthcoming. In addition, we surpassed our donor goal for the Alumni Giving Challenge, began work on the school’s alumni of color database project under the guidance of the DEI office, brought our professional networking series to campus with an entertainment-focused panel emceed by Elaine Sir and Sandi Logan ’82, restarted our Young Alumni Welcome Back Brunch in January as well as our alumni sports programs with monthly pick-up basketball, Alumni Sports Day in December, and the Annual Alumni Game in January. When we recognize and capitalize on the resources we have, it benefits the entire

community and provides ample opportunities to return to campus, see friends, catch-up with former teachers, and reconnect with the school. Our 90th anniversary saw the school community gather in celebration of Buckley’s rich history, for an evening soiree and provided moments of wistful nostalgia as the Buckley Fair returned to Gilley for an afternoon of family fun. We closed the year with our signature Reunion program, welcoming record attendance among our Golden Griffins celebrating their 50-year milestone and the class of 2013 celebrating their 10-year milestone. It’s been a great year! We look forward to working and engaging with you again this year and hope to see you at a future alumni event. Go Griffins!

MESSAGE FROM THE

Parents’ Association Dear Buckley Community,

It has been an absolute privilege to lead the Parents’ Association during our remarkable 90th anniversary! Throughout the past year, as we celebrated our community of students, alumni, parents and guardians, faculty, and friends, this year’s theme of ‘Together We Go Far’ came to life. Members of the Parents’ Association worked tirelessly to organize community-building events that allowed all supporters of Buckley to experience just how special our school truly is! In our 90th year, we welcomed the exciting opportunity to host our annual fair, Club 90, on Gilley Field. Gilley was transformed into an unforgettable event that far exceeded our expectations. Special thanks to our dedicated fair chairs for their unwavering commitment to our community! Club 90 exemplifies the remarkable achievements that are possible when we unite as a community, highlighting the strength of our collective efforts. I’d like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our Parent Association Executive Vice President, Ai-Vy Miller, the advancement office, and Buckley’s Parent Association Executive Board. I’d also like to recognize the exceptional efforts of our Parents’ Association Executive Board. Their tremendous effort and hard work not only accomplished our goals but also brought our community together, heightening Griffin pride. With our strong leadership, hard working volunteers, and support of our entire community, we are proud to share that the Parents’ Association has made a significant impact in supporting our teachers and students. Knowing that we are providing our children the opportunity to thrive in this exceptional community while supporting our faculty and staff in delivering an unparalleled student experience makes all the time and effort truly worthwhile. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for supporting the Parents’ Association! I cannot wait to see what Jodi Elhami and Dana Nussbaum have in store for 2023-24! Your gifts are what turn a good school into a great school! The Buckley School is grateful for the 90 years of philanthropy and generosity of spirit that exists among members of our community. Financial support from parents and guardians, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends provides exceptional opportunities and outstanding resources for our students and programs. Buckley’s continued legacy of excellence depends on regular support from generous members of the community. Every gift to our school– regardless of size– sends a strong message that we are committed to our students, their education, and the future of The Buckley School. There are several ways to make a tax-deductible donation to the school.

52

The Buckley School

Cash, Check, or Credit Card

Contributions made by check, cash, or credit card are tax-deductible in the year the donation is given. Please make checks payable to “The Buckley School”. To make a donation with your credit card, you can use our online donation form or contact the Advancement Office.

Stock Gifts

Contributions of appreciated stocks, or other capital assets that have increased in value can result in significant tax saving. The current full value of the gift can generally be deducted on federal and state income tax, and the capital gains tax on the amount of appreciation is avoided. We recommend that donors consult their financial advisor before making any financial decisions.

Matching Gifts

Your gift could be matched dollar for dollar. Many companies* offer matching gift programs that will double or even triple a donation’s value. Some companies match gifts by spouses and/or retirees. Contact your human resources department for eligibility information and to obtain a matching gift form and follow your employer’s matching gift procedures.

*Companies that offer matching gift programs include, but are not limited to: American Express | Apple | BlackRock Capital Group | Clif Bar | Dell | Disney | Dropbox | Gap | Genentech | General Electric | Google | Levi Stauss & Co. | Mastercard | Microsoft | Netflix | PG&E | Salesforce | Visa | Wells Fargo | Yahoo | Zynga
