Bucknell Department of Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell studentathletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence
Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

With three more Patriot League championships in 2008-09, Bucknell has now earned 73 crowns in 19 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 100 conference players of the year, 83 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 476 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 15 times in the 19-year history of the affiliation, including 11 of the last 12 years. Bucknell claimed the overall and women’s Cup standings in 2008-09. It was the 12th straight year and the 15th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2008-09, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing and men’s golf. Additionally, the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams captured regular-season titles.

According to federal data released by the NCAA in the fall of 2008, Bucknell’s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was second-highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years. With a four-class average of 89 percent, Bucknell trailed only Davidson (92 percent) among all Division I institutions reporting federal graduation rates (the Ivy League and military academies do not report federal graduation rates). Georgetown, Notre Dame and Holy Cross were also at 89 percent. Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate is identical to its overall student-body average of 89 percent.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 115 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 238 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

In addition to the 118 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 281 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09.
A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Over the last three years Bucknell has had seven different wrestlers earn a combined 12 NCAA berths, improved its EIWA finish from ninth to eighth to third, had its first All-American in nearly 15 years and won 32 duals against a difficult schedule that featured at least a handful of ranked opponents each year. The scary thing for Bison foes is all that has occurred without a senior on the roster. In 2009-10, for the first time since the reinstatement of the program to varsity status, Bucknell will have a senior class to lead the way. And, it is quite an impressive group of seniors. The only three student-athletes left on the roster from fourth-year head coach Dan Wirnsberger’s initial recruiting class, David Marble, Andy Rendos and Shane Riccio have combined for eight NCAA appearances and 244 individual victories. Each ranks in the top 10 in Bucknell history in wins, while Rendos and Riccio are tied for the top spot on the single-season wins ledger with 33 last year. They have been leaders all along, but those upperclassmen, as well as junior Kevin LeValley, will be counted on to lead the Bison to the lofty goals Wirnsberger envisioned when the program was in its infancy less than half a decade ago - a perennial national top-20 ranking and the ability to produce All-Americans on a yearly basis. As was the case last year when it wrestled seven nationally ranked opponents, Bucknell will once again have a tough slate in 2009-10. The Bison’s 11 victories last year tied for the second-most in program history, and they will have to up their performance to make it back-to-back seasons with at least 10 wins for the first time in program history. They open up the campaign against three tough ACC programs on Nov. 15, host 22-time national champion Iowa alonog with EIWA foe Rutgers in November, have a five-match road trip in January and February and host preseason nationally ranked American on Senior Day. Luckily for Bucknell, plenty of experience is present on the roster, headlined by Marble, Rendos and Riccio. 125 - Projected Starter....................................................... Derek Reber Derek Reber posted one of the best freshman seasons in Bucknell history last year, going 31-12 overall and a team-best 8-0 in EIWA duals. He finished third at the EIWA Championships and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. The Lewisburg, Pa., native did not lose a bout to an unranked opponent after Dec. 5, entering NCAAs. However, the sophomore injured his knee during the preseason and will likely miss the entire 2009-10 campaign. Jose Matos saw some time at 125 last year, posting a solid 13-5 mark, but he is taking the first semester off of school, leaving freshman Derrik Russell to take Reber’s starting spot. A four-sport star in high school, Russell placed in the top seven in New Jersey three times. 133 - Projected Starter......................................................David Marble For the fourth consecutive season Marble will hold down the starting spot at 133 pounds. The three-time NCAA qualifier who is tied for eighth on Bucknell’s career wins list (81) shows up in the Intermat preseason rankings at No. 13. He was nationally ranked for 11 weeks last year, reaching as high as No. 14. Marble, who works closely with Bison assistant coach Dave Hoffman, a former All-American at Virginia Tech, has five career wins at the NCAA Championships and has three consecutive top-six showings at the EIWA Championships, including a fourth-place finish a year ago and a runner-up placing in 2008. “David proved he is more than capable of being an All-American with his runner-up performance at University Nationals this past spring,” commented Wirnsberger. “He has beaten just about everyone in the country, but has yet to nail down that elusive All-America honor. I expect him to challenge for his first All-America award next March.” 141 - Projected Starter...................................................... Adam Healey Keep an eye on.................................................................... Zac Hancock A starter in Bucknell’s final 18 dual matches last season, Adam Healey posted an 18-20 record, including 3-4 in EIWA duals. The 18 wins were the most by a Bison who did not qualify for the NCAA Championships and the second-most by a Bucknell freshman. “Adam is one of our most dedicated student-athletes and seems poised to have a breakout season,” commented Wirnsberger. Pushing Healey for a starting position will be freshman Zac Hancock. The Laura, Ohio, native was a two-time state champion, three-time state finalist and a four-time state placewinner in high school. 149 - Projected Starter....................................................Kevin LeValley One of Bucknell’s three first-time NCAA qualifiers in 2009, LeValley will be the starter at 149 pounds for the third straight season. The junior faced a team-high 10 ranked opponents entering NCAAs and still won a career-high 29 matches, the 11th-most in program history. A sixth-place finish at the EIWA Championships helped him earn his NCAA berth and he went 1-2 at NCAAs. During the offseason LeValley, who was tabbed a team co-captain, brought home freestyle All-America honors with a runner-up performance at the Univer-
sity Nationals. That performance qualified him for a chance to compete at the World Team Trials and earn a position on the United States World Team. “I think his offseason performances really helped Kevin,” said Wirnsberger. “I expect him to bring that poise and confidence to the mats this season and challenge for All-America honors.” Joining LeValley at 149 will be sophomore John Regan. Regan saw time at 141 and 157, in addition to 149, during his rookie campaign and posted a 14-9 mark. At 149, Regan accumulated an 11-6 record, including an 18-3 win by tech fall in his only dual start. 157 - Projected Starter...................................................... Scott Sechler Keep an eye on............................................. Brantley Hooks, Corey Lear Bucknell had four different starters at 157 pounds last year and the competition for the starting spot will once again be intense. Scott Sechler came on strong late in the year, earning a sixth-place finish at the EIWA Championships while also posting a 10-8 decision over Lehigh’s No. 7-ranked Sean Bilodeau late in the season. Overall, Sechler was 12-16, but he was above .500 (3-2) in EIWA duals. Junior Brantley Hooks, who took last year off after starting his first two seasons, will challenge Sechler. Additionally, freshman Corey Lear is expected to see time after winning the Pennsylvania state title wrestling at Benton High School last year. “This weight class has seen a number of starters over the last few years and it will be important to receive some consistency here if we are going to build on last year’s team success,” mentioned Wirnsberger. 165 - Projected Starter...................................................... Andy Rendos Like Marble at 133 pounds, there is no doubt who the starter is at 165 pounds. Rendos is coming off one of the best seasons in program history that featured a berth in the EIWA finals, a third straight trip to the NCAA Championships, a fifthplace showing at NCAAs and the first Bison All-America honor in nearly 15 years. He enters the season sixth in the Intermat preseason rankings, is tied for fifth on Bucknell’s career wins list with 88 and is sixth with a career winning percentage of .779. Rendos has his eyes set on becoming Bucknell’s first NCAA champion and the second Bison to earn All-America honors twice. 174 - Projected Starter....................................................... Shane Riccio Another of Bucknell’s four-year starters that are in the process of rewriting the Bison record books, Riccio enters the 2009-10 campaign 10th on Bucknell’s career wins list with a three-year record of 75-38. He placed third at last year’s EIWA Championships and advanced to his second consecutive NCAA Championships. There, he went 1-2 and finished the season winning 18 of his final 23 bouts. His 33 wins tied Rendos and Brian Pitzer for first on the Bison single-season victories list. “Shane enters this year ranked No. 13 in the nation and I am optimistic about his opportunity to get back to the national tournament and become an All-American for the first time,” said Wirnsberger, who was a three-time All-American at Michigan State. 184 - Projected Starter.................................................David Thompson Keep an eye on......................................................................Rob Waltko David Thompson made a somewhat surprising NCAA appearance last year, earning an at-large berth after placing fifth at the EIWA Championships. That success has landed him a No. 19 national ranking in the Intermat preseason rankings. Thompson was a solid 23-16 last year, including 6-2 in EIWA duals, starting all but one of Bucknell’s 20 dual matches at 184 pounds. Rob Waltko, who earned one start at 184 and went 8-13 as a rookie, will challenge Thompson after working out in Lewisburg all summer. “Rob’s progress has been remarkable after his commitment over the summer,” raved Wirnsberger. “There is no doubt he has all the physical tools needed to win.” 197 - Projected Starter............................................................Jay Hahn Keep an eye on..................................................................Joe McMullan Jay Hahn started the 2008-09 campaign off with a 5-1 record and a fourthplace finish at the Michigan State Open. However, the Malvern, Pa., native lost his final four matches and a knee injury cut his season short. Wirsberger tried Waltko and the since-departed Nathan Jones at 197, but was unable to find consistency. A healthy Hahn and freshman Joe McMullan, a two-time national prep champion and the No. 91 recruit in the country, should give Bucknell solid production at 197. HWT - Projected Starter................................................. Conor Sweeney Like last year when Bucknell ended the year without a heavyweight on the roster, Bucknell will not have much depth at this weight class as freshman Conor Sweeney is the only member. Despite the lack of depth, the Bison will be much improved as Sweeney was a New Jersey state qualifier as a senior at Seton Hall Prep.

Bucknell to Host 22-Time National Champion Iowa in 2009-10 It is not every year that No. 1 Iowa, which has won two consecutive national titles and has claimed 22 championships overall, pays a visit to a program that is in its fourth year, but the 2009-10 campaign is one of those years. The Hawkeyes will wrestle at Bucknell’s Sojka Pavilion on Friday, Nov. 27. Also competing that day will be EIWA foe Rutgers. The first of the three matches is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Normally Bucknell’s basketball facility, Sojka Pavilion will be transformed into the home of Bison wrestling for one day and a sellout crowd of nearly 4,000 is expected to attend. Just four years after the reinstatement of the program, it is remarkable that Bucknell can even compete against a program the caliber of Iowa. “It is a big step forward for our program,” mentioned Bison head coach Dan Wirnsberger, who led Bucknell against seven ranked foes a year ago. “It is a testament to our consistency and the hard work of our staff and studentathletes over the last three-plus years. Just wrestling this match is earning us respect in the wrestling community.”

Dan Wirnsberger, who officially became the 15th coach of the Bucknell wrestling program on May 10, 2005, enters his fifth year at the helm for the Orange and Blue in 2009-10. Hired to guide Bucknell’s program back into the national spotlight after a four-year hiatus where it was not a varsity sport, Wirnsberger has succeeded and currently ranks second on the Bison career wins list with 32. After spending a transitional year recruiting and laying the groundwork for a successful program, Wirnsberger brought Bucknell back onto the mat in 2006-07 with flying colors. Under Wirnsberger’s direction, the 2006-07 Bison returned to the mat in grand fashion, setting a school record for dual-meet victories by compiling a record of 12-9-1, 3-3-1 in the EIWA, including a 17-16 win over nationally ranked Columbia. At the EIWA tournament, he led the Orange and Blue to a ninth-place finish out of 14 schools and saw three Bucknell grapplers earn bids to the NCAA Championships. Facing a tougher schedule in its second season back as a varsity program at Bucknell, Wirnsberger helped the squad to a 9-11-1 mark in 2007-08. The Bison posted a 4-4 mark against EIWA competition. Once again, three wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships and Bucknell moved up one spot to eighth place at the competitive EIWA Championships. The Bison program took a major stride forward last year as Wirnsberger guided Bucknell to a tie for third at the EIWA Championships and helped a schoolrecord six wrestlers earn NCAA berths. Additionally, Andy Rendos became the first Bison to earn All-America honors in 14 years as he placed fifth at NCAAs in the 165-pound weight class. As a team, Bucknell registered 11 wins, giving it a three-year win total of 32, the best stretch in program history. A three-time wrestling All-American at Michigan State University, Wirnsberger previously served as the head coach of Bloomsburg University’s Division I program from 2002 to 2005. As head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger qualified 10 student-athletes for the NCAA Tournament, including six in 2005, his final season at the helm, and he coached the program’s first-ever Olympic Trials qualifier. He helped four Bloomsburg wrestlers capture Eastern Wrestling League titles and six win PSAC crowns. Named the 2005 PSAC Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to the team title for the first time since 1990, Wirnsberger’s recruiting classes were ranked 14th and 19th, respectively, in 2003 and 2004, while his first two recruiting classes at Bucknell have been ranked 14th and 25th by Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.I.N.). In 2004-05, Bloomsburg posted a 10-6 dual-meet record (4-2 EWL) and crowned three EWL champions while finishing fifth at the league tournament. Prior to becoming head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger spent six years as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, where he helped coach a team that featured three All-Americans and finished in the top-25 at the NCAA Tournament in 2000 (19th) and 2001 (23rd). The Hokies qualified a school-record five wrestlers for NCAA’s in 2000, and the following year the program was invited to compete at the National Team Duals at Penn State. At both Bloomsburg and Virginia Tech, Wirnsberger gained extensive experience in the areas of national recruiting, fundraising and summer camp administration. A 1995 graduate of Michigan State with a degree in criminal justice, Wirnsberger posted a 35-8 record and was the Big Ten Champion and NCAA runnerup at 158 pounds in 1995. That was his third of three straight All-America plaques, and he earned team Most Valuable Wrestler honors. Overall in his career, Wirnsberger compiled a record of 120-44, the third most wins in school history. In NCAA competition, he logged 11 wins for the Spartans in three trips to nationals. Participating at a higher weight class of 167 pounds, Wirnsberger defeated such renowned opponents as two-time NCAA champion Marcus Mollica of Arizona State and Iowa’s NCAA champion Darryl Weber. Wirnsberger began his coaching career with the Mason (Mich.) Youth Wrestling Program. He later moved back to his native South Carolina, where he served as head wrestling coach at Greer High School. • Four-time NCAA Qualifier • 2006 All-American Tom Carr is in his first year with the Bucknell wrestling program. Carr spent the previous two years as an administrative assistant with the Michigan State wrestling team. He provided assistance in all aspects of the program. Chief among his duties were serving as the assistant tournament director for the Michigan State Open, managing the Spartan Webcast of all home dual meets and assisting in travel management and planning. Additionally, Carr designed marketing materials for the Spartan wrestling camp and developed a marketing plan to enhance the fan experience and increase attendance at home matches. Prior to his time at Michigan State, Carr was an assistant wrestling coach at Central College and with the Buckeye Wrestling Club for a year each. He was heavily involved with recruiting at Central College, while he managed the design and launch of the Buckeye Wrestling Club Web site. A 2004 graduate of Muskingum College with a degree in psychology and minors in business and speech communications, Carr got his start in the coaching profession at Land O’Lakes High School in Florida. There, he served as head coach of the 35-person team that had three state qualifiers, one state champion and three AAU All-Americans.

After a year as a volunteer assistant coach, Donny Ooton is now in his second season as a member of the Bison staff. An accomplished wrestler at both Virginia Tech and Brockport, Ooton is now a full-time member of Dan Wirnsberger’s staff. Ooton, a high school All-American and a three-time Virginia state champion at Great Bridge High School, started his college career at Virginia Tech before transferring to Brockport for his final two seasons. While with the Hokies, Ooton, who was a teammate of current Bison assistant Dave Hoffman, placed third at both the 2004 Navy Classic and the 2005 ACC Championships at 141 pounds. At Brockport, Ooton was a two-time Division III All-American at 149 pounds, and he was the Empire Wrestling Conference champion. Additionally, he placed third at the 2006 Brockport Oklahoma Gold Classic. Over his four-year college career, Ooton posted an 88-36 record. He graduated from Brockport in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

Dave Hoffman enters his fourth season at Bucknell and his third as Dan Wirnsberger’s top assistant. Hoffman earned the promotion after he spent his first season with the Orange and Blue coaching the varsity lightweights and helping guide 133-pounder David Marble to an appearance at the NCAA Championships in 2007. His work with Marble and the other lightweights has continued and Marble earned his third consecutive NCAA Championship berth last year. Additionally, 125-pounder Derek Reber advanced to the NCAAs as a freshman last spring. Hoffman, a Spring City, Pa., native, graduated from Virginia Tech in 2006 where he was a four-time NCAA Championship qualifier and an All-American his senior year. During his career with the Hokies, Hoffman compiled a record of 11632, including 19 major decisions, five technical falls and 38 falls. He also earned Freshman All-America honors from Amateur Wrestling News in 2002. At The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., Hoffman was a five-time prep All-American and two-time prep national champion, one of only two wrestlers in school history to achieve All-America status five times. He posted a record of 195-17 in his prep school career.

• Bucknell will host No. 1 Iowa and Rutgers on Friday, Nov. 27. The match will take place in Sojka Pavilion, marking the first wrestling match there since the facility opened in 2003. • Bucknell had four wrestlers show up in the InterMat preseason rankings. David Marble (13th at 133), Andy Rendos (6th at 165), Shane Riccio (13th at 174) and David Thompson (19th at 184) were the four Bison to be ranked. • Bucknell had a school-record six NCAA qualifiers in 2009. • Bucknell tied for third place at the 2009 EIWA Championships, marking its highest finish at a conference championship since the 1994-95 squad won the ECWA title in Davis Gym. • Senior Andy Rendos was selected to particpate in the NWCA All-Star Classic in Fullerton, Calif., in November 2009.

Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame - Wrestling Members The Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to honor the very best in the history of Bison athletics. Five former wrestlers are among the 211 outstanding members whose contributions to Bucknell athletics are forever preserved in the Hall of Fame. Ed Curran (’88) - Ed Curran was a three-time East Coast Conference wrestling champion during his time as a member of the Bison. Hall of Famer Tom Scotton is the only other Bucknell wrestler to make that claim. He qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times and was a quarterfinalist in 1986. As a senior, Curran posted a 23-4 record at 134 pounds, and he finished with an impressive career record of 71-20-1, which was then the second-highest victory total at Bucknell. He was the Outstanding Wrestler at both the Bloomsburg Invitational and Cornell Invitational in 1987. Curran was just as successful off the wrestling mat, where he made the Dean’s List every semester, won the prestigious University Prize for Men and was a Second Team Academic All-American. He also earned the ECAC Medallion and graduated magna cum laude. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2005.

Bobby Ferraro (’94) - A first-ballot Hall of Fame choice and Bucknell’s only two-time wrestling AllAmerican, Bobby Ferarro graduated with an impressive 118-21-1 career mat record and four East Coast Wrestling Association gold medals. He became just the third grappler in school history to earn AllAmerica honors with an eighth-place finish in the 177-pound class at the NCAA Championships during his senior season, and then he repeated the distinction with a seventh-place finish as a graduate student in 1995. Ferraro finished 31-8 in 1994, falling just one victory shy of the school record, and he tied a 37-year-old school mark by recording pins in five straight matches. With a 30-6 record in 1995, Ferraro broke the school career victory record and finished second all-time with 44 falls. In becoming just the second man to win four ECWA titles, Ferraro in 1995 also helped the Bison to their second-ever team championship. He was the ECWA Championships Outstanding Wrestler in 1992 and never lost a conference bout. A two-time team captain, he won the Christy Mathewson Award as Bucknell’s top senior athlete. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2004. Richard P. Kaufmann (’68) - A three-year letterman in football and wrestling, Richard P. Kaufmann captained the 1967 football team and was co-captain of the wrestling team as a junior and senior. Kaufmann’s career dual match wrestling record was 17-12-2, and as a senior he won Bucknell’s Outstanding Multiple Sport Athlete Award and the Christy Mathewson Award as the outstanding athlete in the senior class. He bgan his football career at Bucknell as a fullback, but was moved to defensive end at the beginning of his junior year. He was twice named to the All-Pennsylvania second team and All-Middle Atlantic Conference first team at the new position. The top accounting student in his Bucknell class and a cum laude graduate, Kaufmann received an MBA from Harvard and later returned to the ministry. He served as executive pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City and previously served as pastor of New Life Presbyterian Church in Escondido, Calif. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1996.

Thomas M. Marchetti (’91) - Tom Marchetti was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, and as a sophomore in 1989 he became Bucknell’s very first wrestling All-American when he placed fourth at 167 pounds. Marchetti earned three consecutive East Coast Cconference titles from 1989-91, and he was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 1990 ECC Championships. He graduated as Bucknell’s all-time winningest wrestler with a 106-24 mark. His 31 victories in 1990-91 were second-most in program history at the time, while his 45-7 dual-match record was third-best all-time. Marchetti remains one of only five Bucknell wrestlers to win 80 percent of his matches over a four-year career, and he also set school marks for pins in a season (19) and career (41). Marchetti was a Freshman All-American in his first year at Bucknell and was nationally ranked in each of his final three seasons. A Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top senior athlete in his class, Marchetti was a two-year team captain. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009 Thomas M. Scotton (’78) - Named All-East by National Mat News in 1978 and selected Bucknell’s outstanding wrestler four times, Scotton never lost a dual collegiate match on his way to three ECC championships and appearances at the NCAA Championships and holds several Bison mat records. Twice co-captain, he had a career record of 89-4-1. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

EIWA History The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA), as it is known today, had its beginning in 1904. Then, students from a number of schools in the East met and proposed the creation of a group whose responsibility it would be to organize intercollegiate wrestling as a formal sport. One year later wrestlers from Columbia, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale competed in the first EIWA tournament. Under the management of J. Edward Weisenfluh, a student at Penn, the first tournament was held April 7, 1905, in the Gymnasium of Weightman Hall on the Penn campus in Philadelphia. At this first meeting the Intercollegiate Wrestling Association was born. Thereafter, three meetings were held each year, once just before the tournament, once just after the meet, and once in October at which a new tourney site was selected. No team scoring was kept at the first EIWA tournament in 1905. All that was recorded was the total number of bouts won by each wrestler, in the following weight classes: 115, 125, 135, 145, 158, 175 and heavyweight. Based on that system, Yale won, followed in order by Columbia, Princeton and Pennsylvania. Remaining strictly a student organization for three and one-half decades, the group gradually assumed the name “Eastern” to distinguish itself from the faculty-controlled “Western” Association, now known as the Big Ten. Ultimately, after the 1939 meet, the students capitulated to faculty control, and the Eastern College Athletic Conference, organized in 1938, has since provided formal structure for the EIWA, which now functions as an allied entity of the ECAC. “The Easterns” have survived both as the oldest intercollegiate wrestling organization and as a unique athletic event with unusually widespread spectator appeal. Today, membership in the EIWA numbers 14 schools: American, Army, Brown, Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, East Stroudsburg, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Lehigh, Navy, The Bison following their third-place finish at the Penn, Princeton and Rutgers.
