WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A BISON “...
THE PURSUIT OF ATHLETICS IN COLLEGE

Senior Co-Captain Luke Trafton
— CHRISTY MATHEWSON, IN HIS BOOK WON IN THE NINTH, WRITTEN IN 1910
The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •
According to federal data released by the NCAA in the fall of 2008, Bucknell’s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was second-highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years. With a four-class average of 89 percent, Bucknell trailed only Davidson (92 percent) among all Division I institutions reporting federal graduation rates (the Ivy League and military academies do not report federal graduation rates). Georgetown, Notre Dame and Holy Cross were also at 89 percent. Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate is identical to its overall student-body average of 89 percent.
•
With three more Patriot League championships in 2008-09, Bucknell has now earned 73 crowns in 19 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 100 conference players of the year, 83 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 476 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.
•
Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 15 times in the 19-year history of the affiliation, including 11 of the last 12 years. Bucknell claimed the overall and women’s Cup standings in 2008-09. It was the 12th straight year and the 15th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2008-09, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing and men’s golf. Additionally, the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams captured regular-season titles.
•
Bucknell has claimed a league-high 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.
•
Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections.
•
A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 238 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.
•
•
24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2009.
•
In addition to the 117 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 276 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09.
A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

2009-10 Bucknell Swimming and Diving
WOMEN’S SEASON PREVIEW Bucknell has finished in the top three at the Patriot League Championships nine consecutive years and claimed four straight titles from 2003 to 2006. There is no reason to expect that success will stop in 2009-10 as the Bison return a host of Patriot League scorers and are a veteran team with seven talented seniors and four experienced juniors. “We are making steady progress,” said fourth-year Bucknell head coach Dan Schinnerer, who owns a 14-12-1 career record and is coming off a 7-3 mark in 2008-09. “Two years ago we were a very young team. Last year we had a good season and gained confidence, which resulted in a breakthrough season. We should only improve upon that this year. We have good experience, balance and potential and the women are setting high goals for themselves. “On paper we look to be in the mix in the Patriot League. Other teams lost more to graduation than us, but it will take a great performance to move up the standings past Navy and Colgate.” Another reason for optimism is the fact that all eight All-Patriot League selections for Bucknell return. Seniors Abigail Atkinson and Lauren Russell, as well as junior Macey Keath, who were all first-team choices, headline that list. There is a clear hierarchy in the Patriot League with 2009 champion Colgate, runner-up Navy and Bucknell each tallying more than 650 points last The 800 free relay team of Jamie Chakany, February. The 656.5 points the Bison Megan Mongan, Christine Shepherd and scored were more than double fourthAlexandra Lovallo show off their thirdplace American’s total. Bucknell is preplace medals. dicted to finish third once again in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. Sprint Freestyle: Seniors Megan M Mongan and Courtney Warren, d co-captain t i C t W along with junior Molly Goebel, should anchor the sprint freestyle group. Goebel set the program record in the 50 free (23.20) during the preliminaries of last year’s Patriot League Championships, while Mongan took 11th in the 100 free after posting the sixth-best time in school history. Warren, who competed at the ECAC Championships in the 50 and 100 free, placed fifth in both at the Patriot League Championships, earning a top-five time in each. Freshman Lauren Timmerman is expected to join the experienced group and have success as well. Mid-Freestyle: The school record holder in the 200 free is Mongan (1:51.83), who swam nearly a second faster than former record holder Lectie Altman on her way to a fifth-place finish at the Patriot League Championships. Sophomore Jamie Chakany should be improved in her second year, while sophomore Christine Shepherd should be strong as well. Chakany ranks third in program history in the 500 free (4:59.59) and is also the school record holder in both the 1,000 free (10:11.43) and 1,650 free (16:48.52). Russell posted three top-five finishes at the Patriot League Championships, but did not focus on the freestyle events a year ago. The versatile senior has competed in nearly every discipline and distance over her career and Schinnerer says she is a strong force. Schinnerer is also excited to see Shepherd’s progress as she enters her second year in Orange and Blue. He thinks she can make an impact one year after earning top-10 times in the 200 and 500 free at Patriots. Freshman Kelly Purcell is expected to produce in the mid-freestyle events. Distance Freestyle: Chakany and Shepherd, who both rank in the top 10 in the 1,000 free, will also compete in the distance free events, and will be joined by freshman Anna Griest. Russell will continue to contribute in the 1,000 and 1,650 free as
well. Backstroke: Schinnerer thinks the backstroke events are a strength for the Bison with co-captains Abigail Atkinson and Warren among the best in the Patriot League and program history. Warren set the school record in the 100 back and finished third at the Patriot League Championships last February. Atkinson finished fifth in the postseason race with the third-best time in program annals. Atkinson had a bronze medal performance in the 200 back after posting a schoolrecord time of 2:00.24 in the preliminaries. Russell, senior Abigail Paules and junior Sinead O’Dwyer will also be expected to contribute in the backstroke events. O’Dwyer ranks ninth in program history in the co 100 1 back, while Russell (third) and Paules (eighth) are in the top 10 in the 200 back. Breaststroke: The breaststroke group of Keath and freshmen Morgan Oxley and Elizabeth Porcellio, is without a senior, but expectations are high. Schinnerer believes E Oxley and Porcellio will make impacts as rookies and help overcome the loss of standO outs o Kelly Morris and Nikki Seaman to graduation. Keath, who also owns the school record in the 400 individual medley, is the record holder in both the 100 and 200 breast, while Morris and Seaman graduated with toph five times in both events. Keath finished fifth in the 100 breast and earned a silver medal in the 200 breast at last year’s Patriot League Championships. She did not finm ish is outside of the top three in either event during the course of the regular season. Butterfly: Bucknell is without a regular senior contributor at butterfly, but has talent with four different swimmers who have recorded top-10 times in either the 100 ta or o 200. Chief among them is sophomore Kaitlyn Sweeney, who ranks fourth in the 200 2 fly and seventh in the 100 fly. Goebel, who ranks in the top five in program history in both the 50 free and 100 free, fr stands second on the all-time 100 fly list with her 56.31, which was eighth at the th Patriot League Championships. It was one of three top-eight performances at last yyear’s postseason meet at Kinney Natatorium. Sophomore Kristen Bucaria and junior Laura Twichell are both especially strong in the 200, where Twichell was a Patriot League finalist a year ago. th Schinnerer expects freshman Alexandra Psaris to be a contributor in the butterfly eevents in her first year. IM: “This is another strong event for us,” Schinnerer mentioned. “We return a lot of swimmers who all should be strong.” Last year Bucknell had five of the top 12 finishers in the 400 individual medley at the Patriot League Championships. That depth will continue in 2009-10 as the Bison have no fewer than eight swimmers Schinnerer expects to shine in the IM events. In fact, Bucknell enters the year with the three fastest 200 IM swimmers in program history on the roster. Russell, who took second in the event last February, owns the school record (2:03.98), while Atkinson and Mongan hold down the second and third positions. Russell ranks second in the 400 IM, .09 seconds behind record holder Keath. Atkinson, Mongan, Russell, Bucaria, Keath, Paules and O’Dwyer are veterans who are all expected to contribute. Additionally, Porcellio, who also swims the breaststroke, will add depth in her rookie year. Relays: Bucknell set program records in the 200 and 400 medley relays and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays at last year’s Patriot League Championships and lost only Alexandra Lovallo from its relay lineup, leading Schinnerer to remark that he thinks the relays will be even stronger this year. With good depth, Schinnerer thinks the 800 free relay will improve and have a shot at breaking the seven-year-old school record. Diving: Bucknell has a veteran diving group with seniors Rebecca Bersani, Allison FitzPatrick and Eliza Massie leading the way. Bersani is the one-meter diving record holder, while FitzPatrick holds the top spot off the three-meter board. The current seniors occupy three of the top four spots on the top-10 list for each boards. FitzPatrick and Bersani posted top-five finishes off both boards at the Patriot League Championships, while Massie will try to bounce back after missing the second half of last year. Bersani will have an entire campaign to prove herself after missing the first semester of competition in 2008-09. Sophomores Jennifer Kokoska and Morgan Popple gained valuable experience as freshmen and should be improved in their second year.

2009-10 Bucknell Swimming and Diving
MEN’S SEASON PREVIEW Bucknell has finished second at the Patriot League Championships each of the last two years and is coming off four straight top-three finishes, but Bison fourth-year head coach Dan Schinnerer knows it isn’t easy to hold onto that position. To make sure his team stays near the top of the Patriot League, Schinnerer has accomplished his goal of having a balanced team. “We are a balanced team,” mentioned Schinnerer, who owns a 17-10 career record. “To be a good team you have to be balanced and that is a point of emphasis for us.” While Bucknell returns eight of its nine All-Patriot League selections, including three-time First-Teamer Luke Trafton, the Bison did lose their only individual Patriot League champion from last year, Mark Kawczenski, to graduation. “You don’t replace someone like Mark on a one-for-one basis,” said Schinnerer. “The whole team needs to chip in to replace him, from returning guys improving to the freshmen coming in.” With the eight returning All-Patriot Leaguers, Bucknell has high expectations entering 2009-10. Chief among the goals is to maintain the success and position in the Patriot League. The Bison finished second, nearly 400 points behind a powerhouse Navy squad, but only 39 points ahead of third-place Army. In the Patriot League Preseason Poll, Bucknell is predicted to finish tied for second, along with the Black Luke Trafton owns the school record Knights, behind Navy. in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 free as Schinnerer has also charged his well as the 400 IM. team with the task of cutting into Navy’s lead. “Since Navy turned 100 percent of its focus to the Patriot League, the bar has bbeen reset,” “We t ” mentioned ti d Schinnerer. S hi “W need to raise our standards to meet that new bar, but we can’t forget the teams behind us like Colgate and Lehigh that continue to get better and better.” Sprint Freestyle: Second Team All-Patriot League performers senior Daniel Fletcher and sophomore Eric Sokolosky will be the top sprint freestyle swimmers for the Bison. Sokolosky ranks fifth in program history on both the 50 and 100 free alltime lists and had top-eight showings in both at the Patriot League Championships. “Eric did a great job for us last year and has high aspirations for this season,” said Schinnerer about the Branford, Conn., native. A two-time All-Patriot League choice, Fletcher will be a versatile option once again this season after swimming mainly the 100 free, 200 free, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley in 2008-09. Seniors Spencer Hallowell and Ben Leboza will add depth, while freshman Bryce Suchomel is expected to move into the lineup as Schinnerer would like to develop additional depth. Mid-Freestyle: Trafton, Matthew Segar and Fletcher rank second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 free all-time, giving Bucknell a strong group. Segar (seventh) and Fletcher (sixth) were also Patriot League scorers, while Trafton, who holds Bucknell records in four events, finished sixth in the 500 free at Patriots. Freshmen Matthew Stevens and Christian Treat will gain experience and add depth in a number of events, including the mid-freestyle. Distance Freestyle: While Trafton is strong in the mid-free events, his real forte is the distance free. The senior co-captain broke 15-year-old records in both the 1,000 and 1,650 free earlier in his career and is now 22 seconds (1,000) and 33 seconds (1,650) history. the 1,650 free at Patriots after winning the event the previous two years. “Luke is the standard-bearer in the distance freestyle, but we need others to step up,” said Schinnerer. Schinnerer expects sophomore Stephen McMillin to fill a larger role in his second year, while versatile classmate Jonathan Podniesinski should swim more freestyle in 2009-10. Backstroke: Bucknell lost Kawczenski from its backstroke corps, but should be strong and deep thanks to a number of individuals improving during the offseason months. Schinnerer thinks it will end up being a strong contingent once again, one year y after taking three of the top six, and five of the top 12, in the 100 back at Patriots. o Junior Gonzalo DeLeon, the school record holder in the 200 back, should headline the th group. The Second Team All-Patriot League choice finished second in the 200 and fourth in the 100 back at last year’s Patriot League Championships. The Ringwood, fo N.J., N native is one of four current Bison to rank among the top 10 in program history in the 100 back and one of five to show up in the 200 back top-10 list. Thomas Brown, Fletcher, David Iselin, Taylor Harris and Suart Ainsworth are also among the fastest backstroke swimmers in program history. In fact, DeLeon, Brown, a Fletcher and Iselin hold down the four fastest 200 times as they each broke the 16F year-old record held by Steve Droste. y Breaststroke: The breaststroke should prove to be a solid event for Bucknell with sophomores Nathaniel Frye, Podniesinski and Evan Palumbo expected to be the main s contributors. Senior Brett Carey, who is eighth on the 200 breast list with a time of co 2:06.71, and rookie Stevens should also have strong years. 2 Schinnerer mentioned Frye, who owns the sixth-fastest time in program history in both the 100 and 200 breast, has continued to show improvement after his Second Team All-Patriot League performance, while Carey is motivated to end his career on T a high note. Podniesinski, who finished fifth in the 200 at last year’s Patriot League Championships, ranks seventh on the Bison top-10 list in that event. C Butterfly: Bucknell did not lose much in the butterfly events and has Michael Volpe, Harris and Sokolosky back. All three list on the Bison top-10 list in the 100 fly, V while Volpe and Harris are joined by Trafton on the 200 fly top-10 ledger. w Volpe placed eighth (100 fly) and ninth (200 fly) at the Patriot League Championships, while Sokolosky was 10th in the 100 fly. h A large freshman contingent of Michael Davitt, Billy Krause and Suchomel should add depth in the butterfly events. IM: Bucknell has plenty of depth and experience in the individual medley with seven different veterans owning top-10 times in either the 200 IM or 400 IM. Fletcher ranks second in the 200 IM with his 1:52.59 at last year’s Patriot League Championships. Volpe (seventh), Frye (eighth) and Ainsworth (ninth) also show up on that list. Like the 500 free, 1,000 free and 1,650 free, Trafton’s name is atop the 400 IM list. He swam a 3:56.81 to finish fifth at the 2009 Patriot League Championships. That time was more than seven seconds faster than the previous record. Podniesinski (second) and DeLeon (fifth) are also among the fastest in program history. The versatile rookie Krause will also challenge in the IM events, while Treat is strong in the 200. Relays: Bucknell set program records in all five relays (200 and 400 medley relay; 200, 400, 800 free relay) last year. Outside of Kawczenski, the Bison return everyone who contributed to those records, and that makes Schinnerer comfortable with the relays heading into 2009-10. Sokolosky was a major contributor to the record-setting season, taking part in four of the record-setting relays. Diving: Jeffrey Manning, Steven Schmaltz and Gregor Zavoluk all graduated last May, leaving the Bison without a diver on the roster. Bucknell added freshman David Magaro during the summer and high expectations await the Enola, Pa., native. “David might be the top diving recruit for this program in recent memory,” said Schinnerer about the lone 2009-10 diver.
