Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur. Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands. Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of four Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the fall of 2009 the CWPA Men’s Water Polo Southern Championships will take place inside the gorgeous facility.
What it Means to
BE A BISON “... THE PURSUIT OF ATHLETICS IN COLLEGE NEED NOT INTERFERE WITH A FELLOW’S STUDIES, AND IF YOU GIVE A BOY A WELL-DEVELOPED BODY HIS BRAIN WILL GET THE BENEFIT OF IT.” — CHRISTY MATHEWSON, IN HIS BOOK WON IN THE NINTH, WRITTEN IN 1910
The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •
According to federal data released by the NCAA in the fall of 2008, Bucknell’s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was second-highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years. With a four-class average of 89 percent, Bucknell trailed only Davidson (92 percent) among all Division I institutions reporting federal graduation rates (the Ivy League and military academies do not report federal graduation rates). Georgetown, Notre Dame and Holy Cross were also at 89 percent. Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate is identical to its overall student-body average of 89 percent.

Bucknell claimed the overall and women’s Cup standings in 2008-09. It was the 12th straight year and the 15th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2008-09, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing and men’s golf. Additionally, the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams captured regular-season titles.
•
Bucknell has claimed a league-high 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

•
A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 238 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.
•
•
24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2009.
•
In addition to the 117 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 276 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09.
A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Bucknell Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League’s Presidents’ Cup student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

since 2001. The Bison finished the year ranked 19th nationally, marking the second time in Abdou’s three years on the sidelines as an assistant that it was ranked at the conclusion of a season. Additionally, the men’s program has finished in the top five at the Eastern Championships all four years Abdou has been associated with the program. On the women’s side, Abdou, the 2008 and 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Women’s Coach of the Year, performed admirably in his stint as interim head coach when he led the squad to a program-record 26 victories and a sixth-place showing at the Eastern Championship. Bucknell was nationally ranked for six weeks during the season, climbing as high as No. 19 in the polls, the best ranking in the then decade-long existence of the program. Since arriving at Bucknell in the summer of 2005, Abdou has helped the Bison women’s team post a pair of 20-win campaigns and accumulate an overall record of 82-53. As an assistant coach, Abdou served as the primary West Coast recruiter for both the men’s and women’s programs and has brought a wealth of talent to Lewisburg. Over the last four years, Abdou has helped the Bison men’s team ink 10 players from his home state, including current freshman Brett Thompson. Eleven California natives dotted the 2009 women’s roster, while three more Californians are part of the women’s Class of 2013. Paul Rave Resume Paul Rave Assistant Coach UC Santa Barbara ’01 Second Season
PERSONAL Date of Birth: 2/13/79 Wife: Kristen Hometown: Linthicum, Md. Resides: Lewisburg, Pa. EDUCATION B.A., Art History, University of California at Santa Barbara, 2001
Former UC Santa Barbara standout Paul Rave is in his second year as an assistant coach for Bucknell’s women’s and men’s water polo squads. Rave was the interim head women’s water polo coach at his alma mater in 2008, leading the Gauchos against a schedule that featured 22 nationally ranked foes. Rave was an assistant coach with UC Santa Barbara’s men’s and women’s water polo teams from the fall of 2006 until March of 2008, when he was elevated to interim head coach of the women’s squad. At the time of his promotion, he took over all duties of the head coach position, including budgeting, recruiting, practice scheduling and planning while continuing all responsibilities associated with the men’s squad. Under Rave’s tutelage, UC Santa Barbara had three all-conference selections in the difficult Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2008. As an assistant coach with UC Santa Barbara, Rave helped the men’s contingent to its first 20-win season since 1990 in his first year on staff. The 2001 graduate of UCSB focused much of his efforts on goalie instruction and saw the men’s team finish the campaign No. 6 in the nation twice during his tenure. Rave was a member of the Gauchos men’s water polo team from 19972000. During his senior season he not only served as the team captain, he was also named Most Valuable Player and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Men’s College Water Polo Athlete of the Year. Rave was also the recipient of the Tim McCormick Leadership Award in 2000. Jerry Shreck Strength & Conditioning Coordinator East Stroudsburg ’96 Eighth Year at Bucknell The strength & conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator. A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition. A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness.

Scott Schulte Award
Dick Russell - CWPA Hall of Fame
The Scott Schulte Award was established in 1980 in honor of the two-time water polo All-American and is presented annually to “the individual who contributes the most to Bucknell water polo.” Last season, 2009 Bucknell graduate Gabriel Heiber was the recipient of the award. An All-East water polo selection four straight years (1977-1980), Schulte led Bucknell to four Eastern championships, and set an all-time NCAA water polo career scoring record with 586 goals. The high scorer in four straight NCAA Tournaments (the only player to accomplish this feat) and holder of the career record of 50 goals in NCAA championships, Schulte played on Bucknell teams that had a combined record of 114-15-3, and he was a Second Team All-American in 1979 and 1980. He was the only player outside of California selected to those All-America squads. He was twice selected to the AAU All-America First Team in water polo, and seven times in his career finished in the top six of an East Coast Conference Swimming Championship event. He won Bucknell’s Christy Mathewson Award, which recognizes the top athlete of the senior class, Scott Schulte ’81 (r) and Mark Gensheimer ’81 in 1981. (l) present the Bucknell University Men’s Water Schulte was a member of Polo Alumni Award to former head coach Dick the U.S. National Team from Russell. 1980-84, was a First-Team Indoor All-American from 1981-85, was Most Valuable Player at the Indoor Nationals in 1981 and 1984, and competed in the World University Games in 1981. He was inducted into the Bucknell Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Collegiate Water Polo Association Hall of Fame in 2006.
The Collegiate Water Polo Association announced that former Bucknell men’s water polo and swimming coach Dick Russell, along with Richard Hunkler of Slippery Rock, would compose the initial class inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame in 2002. Both Russell and Hunkler laid the foundation for the organization that exists today and were instrumental in its development for almost 20 years. Russell served Bucknell as an associate professor of physical education and developed a local swim class program. It was there he founded a water polo club in 1968, which continued until 1977, when the team achieved varsity status. Between 1977 and 1986, Russell’s water polo teams tallied an amazing record of 223-68-4. This consistent success made Russell the first coach in Bucknell history to record more than 100 victories in two sports, swimming and water polo. Under Russell the water polo teams won four Eastern Championships and competed in the NCAA Championship five times. He was named Eastern Water Polo Coach of the Year in 1985. Although it seemed minor at the time, one of his biggest achievements has had a tremendous impact on the sport throughout the country. Russell was the founder of the Mid-Atlantic Conference, now known as the Collegiate Water Polo Association. Originally including only a few teams, his pioneer work in establishing this league laid the foundation for the nationwide conference that boasts over 220 teams today. In 1968, Russell began his tenure at Bucknell as head swim coach and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1994. While at the helm, he led the men’s swim program to a 154-121 record in dual meets, along with 11 conference championships. He was also named a Master Coach by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association in 1978. Russell began his coaching career at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio, amassing an 85-14 dual meet record before being named head swimming and golf coach, as well as a football assistant at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. While at Kenyon, Coach Russell won 33 of 52 dual meets and four Ohio Athletic Conference Championships in his years as coach. Russell was inducted into the Bucknell University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 and was presented with a plaque commemorating his contributions to the Bison water polo and swimming programs in January 2007. Russell passed away in April of 2008 at the age of 75. In the summer of 2009, it was announced that Dan ’78 and Chris (Peterjohn ’76) Richards had pledged $1.5 million to the Bucknell men’s and women’s water polo programs in honor of Dick Russell. Eastern Europe Trip In the summer of 2007, the Bucknell men’s water polo team was afforded the opportunity to take a 14-day tour through Eastern Europe. During the productive trip, the squad had daily practice sessions and competed against local club team most days. Among the many unique experiences was playing water polo in a famed outdoor spring-fed pool in Eger. Additionally, the squad had the chance to see the sights in and around Hungary and Slovakia. The Bison visited Buda Castle, Parliament, Margaret Island and Hero Square in Hungary. Additionally, they attended a reception at the mayor’s house and did some sightseeing at Dobo Square.
CWPA Information Bucknell is a member of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA), which originally began as the Mid-Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association (EWPRA). The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating core. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow.

The Plan for Bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
