BUCKNELL DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell studentathletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

2010-11 Bucknell Wrestling Being a Bison

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A BISON “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

www.BucknellBison.com

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 10 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2009, Bucknell ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 119 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 379 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2009-10 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 257 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2010.

In addition to the 119 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 300 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 17 more in 2009-10.

With a school-record-tying eight Patriot League championships in 200910, Bucknell has now earned 81 crowns in 20 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 109 conference players of the year, 89 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 491 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2010.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 16 times in the 20-year history of the affiliation, including 12 of the last 13 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2009-10. It was the 13th straight year and the 16th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2009-10, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, baseball and softball. Additionally, the women’s water polo team captured the CWPA Southern Division championship, and the wrestling team sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships and produced two All-Americans.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections with 119.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. Two All-Americans in 2009-10

2010-11 Bucknell Wrestling Bison Notebook • The Bucknell wrestling program was discontinued following the 200102 season, but was brought back in 2005 thanks in large part to a generous donation from Bill Graham ’62. • Bucknell’s Sojka Pavilion will host the 107th EIWA Championships March 5-6. It is the first time the Bison will be the host school for the prestigious event. It will be the second wrestling competition to ever be held in the eight-year-old Sojka Pavilion. Bucknell hosted 23-time NCAA champion Iowa and Rutgers in the facility in November 2009.

• Bucknell faced four ranked opponents in 2009-10, including eventual national champion Iowa. The Bison have now wrestled 19 ranked opponents over the last four years. Bucknell is 1-18 against ranked foes since the reinstatement of the program. The lone win over that span was a 1716 win over No. 25 Columbia in February 2007. • Bucknell was a solid 12-2 against unranked opponents in 2009-10. The Bison are 43-17-2 since 2006-07 against foes that are not nationally ranked.

• Senior captain Kevin LeValley was the lone Bison to show up in the InterMat preseason rankings. He was listed No. 5 nationally at 149 pounds.

• Bucknell posted a 5-1 home record in 2009-10, including 4-0 in Davis Gym. The Bison have won five in a row inside Davis Gym, and nine of their last 10 in their home facility.

• Senior captain Kevin LeValley was selected to participate in the NWCA All-Star Classic in Fullerton, Calif., in November 2010. LeValley is the second straight Bison to earn an invitation to the event, joining Andy Rendos.

• Bucknell finished 11-9 overall in 2008-09 and 12-6 in 2009-10. It is the first time since 1993-94 and 1994-95 that the Bison have finished above .500 in successive seasons.

• Bucknell won 12 dual matches in 2009-10, equaling the program record for victories in a season. It marked the ninth time in school history the Bison reached double figures in wins.

• 2010 graduate Andy Rendos became the second Bucknell wrestler to earn All-America honors twice in a career, joining Bobby Ferraro, who accomplished the feat in 1994 and 1995. Rendos finished fifth in the 165-pound bracket in 2009 and followed that with a sixth-place showing in 2010.

• Andy Rendos (6th at 165) and Kevin LeValley (7th at 149) both earned All-America honors in 2009-10. It marked the first time in program history multiple Bison were All-Americans in the same seson.

• Bucknell head coach Dan Wirnsberger has guided the Bison to 44 victories over the last four years. He now ranks second on the Bucknell alltime wins list, trailing only longtime Bison mentor Bobby Ferraro, who posted a 169-175-6 mark from 1974-97.

• Andy Rendos won the 165-pound title at the 2010 EIWA Championships in Bethlehem, Pa. It marked the first individual EIWA champion in Bucknell history.

• With a 42-8 record in 2009-10, Kevin LeValley broke the Bucknell single-season wins record. The previous standard of 33 was shared by Andy Rendos (2008-09), Shane Riccio (2008-09) and Brian Pitzer (1998-99).

• Bucknell had four automatic qualifiers to the 2010 NCAA Championships. It tied the 1992 team for the third-most NCAA qualifiers in program history. Only the 2009 (six NCAA qualifiers) and 1989 (five NCAA qualifiers) teams had more.

• 2010 seniors David Marble (111), Andy Rendos (121) and Shane Riccio (108) all finished their careers with more than 100 victories. Rendos broke Bobby Ferraro’s 15-year-old program wins record, while Marble finished third on the all-time wins list and Riccio was fourth.

• The 2009-10 senior class of David Marble, Andy Rendos and Shane Riccio helped the Bison to a school-record 44 wins (44-35-2) over their four years. That trio combined for 340 individual victories, 11 NCAA appearances, two All-America certificates, 11 EIWA placewinners, 20 NCAA victories and a 69-14 individual record in EIWA duals.

• Bucknell has finished in the top five at each of the last two EIWA Championships. The Bison tied for third place with Penn at the 2009 event and last year they finished fourth. The third-place showing in 2009 marked Bucknell’s best-ever finish at the EIWA Championships.

• Eight Bison (David Marble, John Regan, Kevin LeValley, Brantley Hooks, Andy Rendos, Shane Riccio, Rob Waltko, Joe McMullan) were EIWA placewinners in 2010. It marked the most EIWA placewinners in program history.

• Bucknell used 11 different starting lineups in 2009-10, including 10 in the first 11 matches.

Season Outlook

6

For the first time in his half-decade at Bucknell, head wrestling coach Dan Wirnsberger is having to replace a graduated senior class. And he has quite the group to replace as David Marble, Andy Rendos and Shane Riccio graduated last May with 340 individual wins, 11 NCAA appearances, two All-America certificates, 11 EIWA placewinners, 20 NCAA victories, a 69-14 record in EIWA duals and 44 team wins. The Bison wrestling program was reinstated to varsity status prior to the 2006-07 season and this is the first time Wirnsberger will not have those three names that have dominated the headlines so much. However, expectations are still as high as ever for Bucknell, which finished 27th in the final team standings at last year’s NCAA Championships. Senior Kevin LeValley, a 2010 All-American at 149 pounds, headlines the 2010-11 roster. He enters the year ranked in the top five nationally in many polls and is within reach of Rendos’ career wins record of 121 with a 93-37 three-year mark. Fellow seniors Jay Hahn, Brantley Hooks, Scott Sechler and Rob Waltko, will combine with LeValley to provide plenty of leadership and experience, while third-year sophomore Derek Reber and fourth-year junior David Thompson add additional NCAA experience after competing at the national tournament in 2009. Bucknell has faced 19 ranked opponents over the last four years, and that challenging schedule will continue this year when it hosts in-state rival Lehigh in early December, immediately following road competitions at perennial national powers Nebraska and Oklahoma State in late November. Overall, the Bison will face no fewer than five teams that finished in the top 25 at last year’s NCAA Championships. Highlighting the Bison’s home schedule is the EIWA Championships, which will take place inside Sojka Pavilion the first weekend in March. It will be the first time the 107-year-old event will be held at Bucknell. 125 - Projected Starter.................................................Derek Reber Derek Reber posted one of the best freshman seasons in Bucknell history in 2008-09, but missed all of last year with a knee injury suffered on the day of the preseason intrasquad match. He is back at full strength this year and has his sights set on a second NCAA appearance. Reber went 31-12 overall and a team-best 8-0 in EIWA duals as a freshman. He finished third at the EIWA Championships and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. The Lewisburg, Pa., native did not lose a bout to an unranked opponent after Dec. 5. Derrik Russell started at 125 in Reber’s absence last year, but he has moved up a weight class, leaving freshman Bob Hauser, a two-time Virginia state qualifier, to compete with Reber. 133 - Projected Starter................. Derrik Russell or Alex Pellicciotti With David Marble turning in his singlet for a whistle and a position on the Bison coaching staff, there is a hole at 133 for the first time since the reinstatement of the program. Sophomore Derrik Russell, who went 11-18 at 125 last year, will fight with freshman Alex Pellicciotti for the starting position. Russell won seven of his first 11 matches as a rookie, but had his campaign cut short by a late-season knee injury. Pellicciotti comes to Bucknell after 170 wins in high school, 88 by fall. He was a three-time PIAA state placewinner. 141 - Projected Starter...........................Zac Hancock, Adam Healey Keep an eye on ........................ Eric Harris, Jack Ingram, Nick Gurol Bucknell has more depth at 141 than possibly any other weight class. Two former starters are in the mix as junior Adam Healey was the team’s primary starter two years ago and went 6-12 in duals, and sophomore Zac Hancock won the job last year before being sidelined the second half of the campaign with a head injury. Hancock posted a 10-9 record last year against a difficult slate of opponents that featured six ranked foes. Sophomore Eric Harris makes a return to the team this year after a twoyear Mormon mission in Ecuador, while sophomore Jack Ingram and freshman Nick Gurol will also be in the mix. Harris posted a 6-9 record as a freshman in 2007-08, while Ingram was 2-9 a year ago as a rookie. “With so many wrestlers vying for the starting nod, it should bring some heated battles into the wrestling room on a daily basis,” commented Wirnsberger. “There will be some intriguing matchups to watch, but we would prefer consistency from one guy rather than having multiple options to choose from.” 149 - Projected Starter............................................. Kevin LeValley Just the fifth different Bison to earn All-America honors, LeValley will be

the starter at 149 for a fourth consecutive year. He finished seventh nationally at 149 pounds after taking second at the EIWA Championships. A twotime EIWA placewinner, LeValley broke Bucknell’s single-season wins mark last year (42) and led the squad in dual victories (16). The Bison coaching staff thinks LeValley has a legitimate chance to make a run at an NCAA title, an accomplishment no Bucknell wrestler has ever achieved. Junior John Regan, who wrestled at both 149 and 141 last year, was set to back up LeValley, but he will likely miss the season with knee and calf injuries. 157 - Projected Starter............................................ Brantley Hooks Keep an eye on ............................................................Scott Sechler Wirnsberger sees the 157-pound weight class as a key weight for the Bison this season and expects more production with veterans Brantley Hooks and Scott Sechler expected to see the majority of action. Returning starter Hooks is a fifth-year senior who is 66-55 in his career and is coming off a 23win junior campaign and a sixth-place finish at the EIWA Championships. Sechler, a senior, has had plenty of success as well, compiling a 31-39 career mark. He finished sixth at EIWAs in 2009 and has eight bonus-point victories in his career. 165 - Projected Starter................................................... Corey Lear Keep an eye on .............................Nicholas Czapla, Stephen McPeek Bucknell lost Andy Rendos, a two-time All-American and the program’s first EIWA champion, to graduation, but still has plenty of talent at 165. Sophomore Corey Lear, who filled in for an injured Rendos in a handful of dual matches last year, enters the season as the starter. He posted a 20-11 record as a freshman and recorded an 11-1 mark in bonus-point matches, recording six pins and five major decisions. Junior Nicholas Czapla and freshman Stephen McPeek will push Lear all season long. Czapla is 25-23 through two years in Orange and Blue, while McPeek was a 2010 national prep and Asics All-American prior to enrolling at Bucknell. 174 - Projected Starter.......................................... David Thompson Keep an eye on ...................................................... Jamie Westwood It’s not often a team can replace one NCAA qualifier with another, but that is exactly what the Bison are doing at 174. Shane Riccio was a three-time NCAA qualifier before graduating last spring fourth on Bucknell’s all-time wins list (108). However, his replacement is fourth-year junior David Thompson, who was a 2009 NCAA qualifier at 184 pounds. The slimmer Thompson, who wrestled at 184 in each of his first three years, missed most of 2009-10 with an injury. He returns this year and brings a 49-37 career record with him. Freshman Jamie Westwood, a two-time New Jersey state placewinner, will push Thompson. 184 - Projected Starter........................... Joe McMullan, Rob Waltko Keep an eye on ........................................................... Austin Fallon Senior Rob Waltko is the returning starter at 184 and is coming off his first 20-win season. However, being named starter again could be a difficult challenge as sophomore Joe McMullan, who wrestled at 197 and heavyweight last year, has followed Thompson’s lead and trimmed down a weight class to be more competitive. Waltko and McMullan will both see plenty of time in the lineup early until one proves to be significantly better than the other. Also vying for starting time will be freshman Austin Fallon, a two-time Virginia state champion and Junior National All-American. 197 - Projected Starter..................................................... Jay Hahn Senior Jay Hahn was Bucknell’s top wrestler at 197 last year, but did split some time with Joe McMullan, who has now moved down a weight class. Hahn has put together a solid career, accumulating 34 overall wins, including 14 in duals. However, Wirnsberger is expecting more consistency from him in his final campaign. With more consistency, Wirnsberger sees the veteran competing for an EIWA title and NCAA berth. Hwt. - Projected Starter............................................ Conor Sweeny Sophomore Conor Sweeney is the only true heavyweight on the Bison roster and is the early favorite to be the starter. Sweeney, a smaller heavyweight at around 220 pounds, posted a 3-16 mark as a freshman, but spent the entire spring and summer training at Bucknell to gain critical size as well as work on technical skills. Wirnsberger sees the heavyweight position as an essential component to the team’s success since it is the anchor of the lineup and many tightly contested duals are decided by the final weight.

The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA), as it is known today, had its beginning in 1904. Then, students from a number of schools in the East met and proposed the creation of a group whose responsibility it would be to organize intercollegiate wrestling as a formal sport. One year later wrestlers from Columbia, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale competed in the first EIWA tournament. Under the management of J. Edward Weisenfluh, a student at Penn, the first tournament was held April 7, 1905, in the Gymnasium of Weightman Hall on the Penn campus in Philadelphia. At this first meeting the Intercollegiate Wrestling Association was born. Thereafter, three meetings were held each year, once just before the tournament, once just after the meet, and once in October at which a new tourney site was selected. No team scoring was kept at the first EIWA tournament in 1905. All that was recorded was the total number of bouts won by each wrestler, in the following weight classes: 115, 125, 135, 145, 158, 175 and heavyweight. Based on that system, Yale won, followed in order by Columbia, Princeton and Pennsylvania. Remaining strictly a student organization for three and one-half decades, the group gradually assumed the name “Eastern” to distinguish itself from the facultycontrolled “Western” Association, now known as the Big Ten. Ultimately, after the 1939 meet, the students capitulated to faculty control, and the Eastern College Athletic Conference, organized in 1938, has since provided formal structure for the EIWA, which now functions as an allied entity of the ECAC. “The Easterns” have survived both as the oldest intercollegiate wrestling organization and as a unique athletic event with unusually widespread spectator appeal. Today, membership in the EIWA numbers 14 schools: American, Army, Brown, Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, East Stroudsburg, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Lehigh, Navy, Penn, Princeton and Rutgers.

Dan Wirnsberger D

HEAD COACH MICHIGAN STATE ’95 SIXTH YEAR

www.BucknellBison.com

• 44-35-2 Bucknell Record • 70-57-2 Career Record

14

Dan Wirnsberger, who officially became the 15th coach of the Bucknell wrestling program on May 10, 2005, enters his sixth year at the helm of the Orange and Blue in 2010-11. Hired to guide Bucknell’s program back into the national spotlight after a four-year hiatus where it was not a varsity sport, Wirnsberger has succeeded and currently ranks second on the Bison career wins list with 44. After spending a transitional year recruiting and laying the groundwork for a successful program, Wirnsberger brought Bucknell back onto the mat in 2006-07 with flying colors. Under Wirnsberger’s direction, the 2006-07 Bison returned to the mat in grand fashion, setting a school record for dual-meet victories by compiling a record of 12-9-1, 3-3-1 in the EIWA, including a 17-16 win over nationally ranked Columbia. At the EIWA tournament, he led the Orange and Blue to a ninth-place finish out of 14 schools and saw three Bucknell grapplers earn bids to the NCAA Championships. Facing a tougher schedule in its second season back as a varsity program at Bucknell, Wirnsberger helped the squad to a 9-11-1 mark in 2007-08. The Bison posted a 4-4 mark against EIWA competition. Once again, three wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships and Bucknell moved up one spot to eighth place at the competitive EIWA Championships. The Bison program took a major stride forward last year as Wirnsberger guided Bucknell to a tie for third at the EIWA Championships and helped a schoolrecord six wrestlers earn NCAA berths. Additionally, Andy Rendos became the first Bison to earn All-America honors in 14 years as he placed fifth at NCAAs in the 165-pound weight class. As a team, Bucknell registered 11 wins, giving it a three-year win total of 32, the best stretch in program history. More milestones were accomplished last year as Wirnsberger saw two of his wrestlers earn All-America honors, marking a first for the program. The Bison also tied a school record with 12 victories and finished with an unbeaten EIWA mark. Wirnsberger guided the team to its second consecutive top-five finish at the EIWA Championships as it claimed fourth in the team standings. Highlighting the weekend was Rendos’ individual title in the 165-pound bracket, making him the first EIWA champion in program history. A three-time wrestling All-American at Michigan State University, Wirnsberger previously served as the head coach of Bloomsburg University’s Division I program from 2002 to 2005. As head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger qualified 10 student-athletes for the NCAA Tournament, including six in 2005, his final season at the helm, and he coached the program’s first-ever Olympic Trials qualifier. He helped four Bloomsburg wrestlers capture Eastern Wrestling League titles and six win PSAC crowns. Named the 2005 PSAC Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to the team title for the first time since 1990, Wirnsberger’s recruiting classes were ranked 14th and 19th, respectively, in 2003 and 2004, while his first two recruiting classes at Bucknell were ranked 14th and 25th by Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.I.N.). In 2004-05, Bloomsburg posted a 10-6 dual-meet record (4-2 EWL) and crowned three EWL champions while finishing fifth at the league tournament. Prior to becoming head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger spent six years as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, where he helped coach a team that featured three All-Americans and finished in the top-25 at the NCAA Tournament in 2000 (19th) and 2001 (23rd). The Hokies qualified a school-record five wrestlers for NCAAs in 2000, and the following year the program was invited to compete at the National Team Duals at Penn State. At both Bloomsburg and Virginia Tech, Wirnsberger gained extensive experience in the areas of national recruiting, fundraising and summer camp administration. A 1995 graduate of Michigan State with a degree in criminal justice, Wirnsberger posted a 35-8 record and was the Big Ten Champion and NCAA runner-up at 158 pounds in 1995. That was his third of three straight All-America plaques, and he earned team Most Valuable Wrestler honors. Overall in his career, Wirnsberger compiled a record of 120-44, the third most wins in school history. In NCAA competition, he logged 11 wins for the Spartans in three trips to nationals. During his career at Michigan State, the team went from a struggling program to a 12th-place national ranking his sophomore year, 25th his junior year and third in the nation his senior season. A three-year captain of the Spartans, Wirnsberger continued his wrestling

career at the Dave Schultz Wrestling c Club while training for the 1997 C World Team Trials. He qualified for W the t trials after placing sixth at the USA U Senior Freestyle Tournament, his h first senior competition. Participating at a higher weight class t of o 167 pounds, Wirnsberger defeated such renowned opponents as f two-time NCAA champion Marcus t Mollica of Arizona State and Iowa’s M NCAA champion Darryl Weber. N Wirnsberger began his coaching career with the Mason (Mich.) Youth c Wrestling Program. He later moved W back to his native South Carolina, b where he served as head wrestling w coach at Greer High School. The Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to honor the very best in the history of Bison athletics. Five former wrestlers are among the 217 outstanding members whose contributions to Bucknell athletics are forever preserved in the Hall of Fame. Ed Curran (’88) - Ed Curran was a three-time East Coast Conference wrestling champion during his time as a member of the Bison. Hall of Famer Tom Scotton is the only other Bucknell wrestler to make that claim. He qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times and was a quarterfinalist in 1986. As a senior, Curran posted a 23-4 record at 134 pounds, and he finished with an impressive career record of 71-20-1, which was then the second-highest victory total at Bucknell. He was the Outstanding Wrestler at both the Bloomsburg Invitational and Cornell Invitational in 1987. Curran was just as successful off the wrestling mat, where he made the Dean’s List every semester, won the prestigious University Prize for Men and was a Second Team Academic All-American. He also earned the ECAC Medallion and graduated magna cum laude. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2005. Bobby Ferraro (’94) - A first-ballot Hall of Fame choice and Bucknell’s only two-time wrestling AllAmerican, Bobby Ferarro graduated with an impressive 118-21-1 career mat record and four East Coast Wrestling Association gold medals. He became just the third grappler in school history to earn All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 177-pound class at the NCAA Championships during his senior season, and then he repeated the distinction with a seventh-place finish as a graduate student in 1995. Ferraro finished 31-8 in 1994, falling just one victory shy of the school record, and he tied a 37-year-old school mark by recording pins in five straight matches. With a 30-6 record in 1995, Ferraro broke the school career victory record and finished second all-time with 44 falls. In becoming just the second man to win four ECWA titles, Ferraro in 1995 also helped the Bison to their second-ever team championship. He was the ECWA Championships Outstanding Wrestler in 1992 and never lost a conference bout. A two-time team captain, he won the Christy Mathewson Award as Bucknell’s top senior athlete. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2004.

SEASON DUAL RECORDS (WINNING %)

Richard P. Kaufmann (’68) - A three-year letterman in football and wrestling, Richard P. Kaufmann captained the 1967 football team and was co-captain of the wrestling team as a junior and senior. Kaufmann’s career dual match wrestling record was 17-12-2, and as a senior he won Bucknell’s Outstanding Multiple Sport Athlete Award and the Christy Mathewson Award as the outstanding athlete in the senior class. He bgan his football career at Bucknell as a fullback, but was moved to defensive end at the beginning of his junior year. He was twice named to the All-Pennsylvania second team and All-Middle Atlantic Conference first team at the new position. The top accounting student in his Bucknell class and a cum laude graduate, Kaufmann received an MBA from Harvard and later returned to the ministry. He served as executive pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City and previously served as pastor of New Life Presbyterian Church in Escondido, Calif. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1996.

Thomas M. Marchetti (’91) - Tom Marchetti was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, and as a sophomore in 1989 he became Bucknell’s very first wrestling All-American when he placed fourth at 167 pounds. Marchetti earned three consecutive East Coast Cconference titles from 1989-91, and he was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 1990 ECC Championships. He graduated as Bucknell’s all-time winningest wrestler with a 106-24 mark. His 31 victories in 1990-91 were second-most in program history at the time, while his 45-7 dual-match record was third-best all-time. Marchetti remains one of only five Bucknell wrestlers to win 80 percent of his matches over a four-year career, and he also set school marks for pins in a season (19) and career (41). Marchetti was a Freshman All-American in his first year at Bucknell and was nationally ranked in each of his final three seasons. A Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top senior athlete in his class, Marchetti was a two-year team captain. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009. Thomas M. Scotton (’78) - Named All-East by National Mat News in 1978 and selected Bucknell’s outstanding wrestler four times, Scotton never lost a dual collegiate match on his way to three ECC championships and appearances at the NCAA Championships and holds several Bison mat records. Twice co-captain, he had a career record of 89-4-1. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.
