What It Means To Be A Bison “...

the pursuit of athletics in college

need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.”

2010 Patriot League Men’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year Daniel Fletcher ’10

— Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 10 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2009, Bucknell ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 118 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 255 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

In addition to the 118 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 293 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 17 more in 2009-10.

With a school-record-tying eight Patriot League championships in 200910, Bucknell has now earned 81 crowns in 20 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 109 conference players of the year, 89 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 491 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2010.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 16 times in the 20-year history of the affiliation, including 12 of the last 13 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2009-10. It was the 13th straight year and the 16th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2009-10, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, baseball and softball. Additionally, the women’s water polo team captured the CWPA Southern Division championship, and the wrestling team sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships and produced two All-Americans.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections with 118.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

2010-11 Bucknell Swimming and Diving

Women’s Season Preview Bucknell, Colgate and Navy have finished 1-2-3 in the final Patriot League standings each of the last five years. The dominance from that trio is expected to continue in 2010-11 as the Bison aim for their 11th consecutive top-three showing at the Patriot League Championships, which this year, will be held at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium for a fifth time since the facility opened early last decade. The Bison did lose a large and talented senior class that included Courtney Warren, the lone Bucknell swimmer to win a Patriot League title over the last four years. However, the Bison do return 20 letterwinners and five of their 10 AllPatriot League selections from last year’s squad that posted a runner-up showing at the league meet. “We graduated a very big senior class, a strong class, a deep class,” said Bison fifth-year head coach Dan Schinnerer about the Class of 2010. “Their development over their four years was exciting to see. It was a four-year process to get to that point. We have a big nine-person freshman class that possesses a lot of talent. Between that group and our people we have coming back, we have the people that can develop and fill holes. The focus has to be everybody making progress and taking it to another level. There are a lot of opportunities.” Schinnerer does see the 2010-11 Bison as a much different team than the 2009-10 edition. For starters, last year’s squad was very balanced across all events. This season, Schinnerer expects some events (sprint and distance freestyle, IM, breaststroke) to be very solid, while he has some questions entering the season in some other areas (backstroke, middle distance freestyle, diving). “In spots we will be better than we were last year, but in other spots, even if we do well, we won’t be as strong as we were last year,” mentioned Schinnerer. “Like any sport, we will need to maximize our strengths.” Sprint Freestyle: Three-time All-Patriot League selection and team co-captain Molly Goebel will be the star in the 50 and 100 free events. She is the school record-holder in the 50 free and ranks fifth in program history in the 100 free. Goebel, who posted three top-five finishes at last year’s Patriot League Championships, took second in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free. Unsettling a bit is the fact that Goebel is the only returning Bison to swim a sub-25-second 50 free and the 100 free in under 53 seconds last year. However, Schinnerer doesn’t think the team will take a step back at all. He projects freshmen Caroline Higgins and Emily Wright to make immediate impacts. Mid-Freestyle: Bucknell will be forced to find some new faces at middle distance freestyle. Last year, 200 free school record-holder Megan Mongan and fellow senior Abigail Atkinson were the team’s best swimmers at 200 free, while Mongan was also among the best at the 500 free distance. Schinnerer has plenty of choices to replace them, including junior Christine Shepherd, sophomore Lauren Timmerman and freshman Kaitlyn Utkewicz. Additionally, Schinnerer has considered using versatile sophomores Elizabeth Porcellio and Kelly Purcell. “Elizabeth and Kelly are very versatile swimmers coming off great freshmen years,” described Schinnerer. “They have the capacity to swim it (middle distance free) and if it is a hole we need to fill, they may find themselves doing it.” Junior Jamie Chakany, who focuses her efforts on distance free, has also been strong in the middle distances. She is second on Bucknell’s all-time 500 free list (4:56.56) and sixth in the 200 free (1:53.52), to go along with her school records in the 1,000 free (10:11.43) and the 1,650 free (16:48.52). Distance Freestyle: Chakany and freshman Kelly Pontecorvo will be the Bison standouts in the distance freestyle events. Chakany holds the program record in the 1,000 and 1,650 free and she earned a third-place finish in the 1,650 at last year’s Patriot League Championships. “Kelly Pontecorvo is going to challenge Jamie and it could be a battle to see who holds the records by the end of the year,” said Schinnerer. Sophomore Anna Griest and Purcell were both finalists in the mile at Patriots last February and Schinnerer expects continued improvement from them. In fact, Purcell ranks fourth on Bucknell’s all-time list (17:13.35), while Griest is fifth (17:14.26). Additionally, freshman Melissa Besman should contribute. Backstroke: The loss of Warren, a two-time Patriot League champion in the 100 back, as well as 200 back school record-holder Atkinson and three-time First

Team All-Patriot League selection Lauren Russell leaves a gaping hole in the backstroke events and Schinnerer is working hard to find reinforcements. Among the possibilities are sophomore Marisa Taddeo and freshman Jennifer Brennan. Taddeo did not compete at the Patriot League Championships last year, but she did swim four events at the ECAC Championships to kick off a busy offseason of traininig. The Bohemia, N.Y., native stayed on campus all summer, knowing the Bison would need replacements for a talented group of graduated seniors in the backstroke. Schinnerer mentioned she put in the time and effort to put herself in position to be a Patriot League scorer. Breaststroke: Among the strongest groups of returners on the team is the breaststroke unit. Multiple-time Patriot League scorers Macey Keath, Morgan Oxley and Porcellio are back to anchor the discipline. All three scored in both the 100 and 200 breast at last year’s championship meet. Keath, who is one of three team captains, had the most impressive showing with a runner-up finish in the 200 breast and a third-place showing in the 100 breast. She is also the school record-holder in both events. Porcellio posted top-10 finishes in both breaststroke events at Patriots and stands fifth on Bucknell’s all-time lists in both disciplines. Oxley ranks sixth in the 100 breast in school history. Butterfly: Just like the sprint freestyle events, Goebel will be Bucknell’s top 100 butterfly swimmer. She ranks second on the program’s all-time list and no teammate was within one second of her fastest time last year. Senior co-captain Laura Twichell and junior Kaitlyn Sweeney will certainly contribute, as will junior Kristen Bucaria. Twichell and Sweeney both scored at last year’s Patriot League Championships, but Schinnerer sees ability inside them to move up from their double-digit placings. Both veterans show up on Bucknell’s top-10 lists for both the 100 and 200 fly. Freshmen Alex Panzarino and Kristen Purdy could contribute, as will sophomore Alexandra Psaris, whose 2:06.98 in the 200 fly at the ECAC Championships proved to be the top time in that event among returning Bison. “We have six or seven good butterfly swimmers, but we need a couple to break through,” analyzed Schinnerer. “We have a lot of people that have shown the ability and potential. It’s an area where we are decent now, but I envision us getting better as the season progresses.” IM: The Bison claimed six of the top 12 spots in the 400 IM at last year’s Patriot League Championships and more of the same is expected in 2010-11. Four of those six finishers return this year, led by Keath, who claimed fourth. Additionally, Purcell (8th), Sinead O’Dwyer (10th) and Bucaria (12th) will add to the depth. All four rank on Bucknell’s top-10 list, led by Keath, whose time of 4:24.68 places her second. The 200 IM is a little different as Bucknell does not have quite the same depth returning as it lost the top three people in its record book (Russell, Atkinson, Mongan) to graduation. Porcellio, who finished fifth at last year’s championship meet and stands fifth in program history, along with O’Dwyer, who is eighth, and Bucaria, who is 10th, will highlight the lineup. Relays: Bucknell’s relays last year were very senior heavy as Warren, Atkinson and Mongan were part of many of the lineups. Despite that, Schinnerer has confidence that key returning relay components Goebel and Keath, along with other veterans and rookies, will step up to replace them. Diving: Like their teammates in the pool, the divers will have increased roles and pressure after the graduation of a number of talented seniors, including 2010 All-Patriot Leaguers Rebecca Bersani and Allison FitzPatrick. Juniors Jennifer Kokoska and Morgan Popple, as well as sophomore Lisa Bolle, are the trio of divers on the roster. None has made it to the finals at the Patriot League Championships, although all three rank in Bucknell’s top 10 off the three-meter board and Kokoska stands 10th off the one-meter board. “Diving is going to be trial-by-fire since none of them have even been in a position to fight for a top finish in the Patriot League finals,” said Schinnerer. “I am expecting improvement this year. (2009 Patriot League Diving Coach of the Year) Errol (Carter) does a great job and where our divers end the year compared to where they start it is always a massive improvement.”

Men’s Season Preview A third consecutive runner-up finish at the Patriot League Championships capped a successful 2009-10 campaign for Bucknell, but fifth-year head coach Dan Schinnerer is not confident the Bison will hold onto their customary position without plenty of hard work in the upcoming months. “We can be great relative to what we have done in the past, but it might not be good enough to stay in the second spot,” Schinnerer commented. “We’d like to think we can start chipping into (seven-time defending champion) Navy’s lead, but we need to be on our game just to maintain the spot we are in.” Schinnerer’s outlook is not an indictment on his squad, but on the strength of the Patriot League as a whole. In fact, the 2010 Patriot League Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year thinks his team could be better than ever but still potentially drop in the standings. “The ups and downs we went through in the dual-meet portion of the schedule last year forced some of the younger guys to step up, and in the end, it led to a great finish to the season,” said Schinnerer. “The learning curve was increased last year when some guys that were not asked to win events in the past were forced into that role.” While the Bison lost top-notch performers like four-time All-Patriot League selection Luke Trafton, who owns four school records, and 2010 First Team AllPatriot Leaguer Daniel Fletcher, seven of their 10 All-Patriot League selections from last year return, including Eric Sokolosky, the 2010 Patriot League champion in the 50-yard freestyle. A total of 16 letterwinners return as the Bison, who were picked to finish second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, look to fend off challengers Army, Lehigh and Colgate. Sprint Freestyle: Sokolosky, the 2010 Patriot League champion in the 50 free and Bucknell’s only returning First Team All-Patriot League selection, will once again be the Bison’s top sprint free swimmer. A junior, he ranks fifth in program history on both the 50 and 100 free all-time lists, in addition to a fourthplace position on the 200 free list. “Eric did a great job tag-teaming with (2009 graduate) Mark Kawczenski as a freshman, and then last year it was his and he took it and ran with it,” said Schinnerer. “He did a great job in the duals and at the championship, and we have great confidence in him to continue that. We are going to need some people to step up so it’s not all on him, though.” Schinnerer expects freshman Trevor Reitz, who is also a member of the men’s water polo team, as well as versatile veterans Bryce Suchomel and Christian Treat to help out. Treat is the second-fastest returning swimmer, behind Sokolosky, in both the 50 and 100 free. Mid-Freestyle: Matthew Segar is Bucknell’s top returning middle-distance swimmer and is coming off a second-place finish in the 200 free at last year’s Patriot League Championships. His time of 1:38.50 at the championship meet put him second on the program’s all-time list, behind only Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Jim Harvey, who has held the record for 22 years. Sokolosky (4th) and Treat (10th) also appear on that list as five Bison earned spots on it last year. Schinnerer also sees freshmen Matt Hadley and Matt Ramey contributing in the 200 and 500 free. Distance Freestyle: Junior Jonathan Podniesinski ranks second in Bucknell history in both the 1,000 and 1,650 free, and is in the top 10 in the 500 free and 400 IM. The two-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection finished fourth in the 1,650 free at last year’s league championships. Segar, who is one of five Bison all-time who have gone under 16 minutes, can swim the 1,650 free at the championships, but during the dual meet season refrains from it due to its placement right after the 200 free. That will give Ramey and fellow freshman Mike Nicholson time to develop into solid contributors. Backstroke: Bucknell had three swimmers in the finals of the 100 and 200

backstroke events last February. It has traditionally been a strong discipline, but the Bison lost two swimmers who were in the finals in both races, leaving a void. Schinnerer sees plenty of options, but will need some new faces to step up. One of those new faces might be an old one, junior Thomas Brown. The Ridgefield, Conn., native was a Patriot League scorer in the 100 and 200 back, as well as the 200 IM, as a freshman, but he missed most of last year with a shoulder injury. Brown does rank second on Bucknell’s 200 back list with a time of 1:49.13. Junior Taylor Harris, who scored in the 100 back last season, has also battled injuries, but could contribute as well. Suchomel and sophomore standout Billy Krause, who did not focus on backstroke as a rookie, could also have an impact in the backstroke events. Breaststroke: The strength of the breaststroke events will be the depth Schinnerer has at his disposal. Junior Nathaniel Frye ranks fifth in the 100 breast and fourth in the 200 breast in program history, while Treat is seventh and fifth, respectively. Podniesinski stands eighth in the 200 breast. Frye, a two-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection, finished third in the Patriot League in the 100 and fifth in the 200 last February, while thenfreshman Matthew Stevens also scored in the top eight in the 200. Junior Evan Palumbo is also a returning scorer. Despite the experienced depth, Schinnerer is putting higher expectations on the middle of the breaststroke group as he expects some improvement through development. In addition to the many veterans who have shown their abilities, Schinnerer anticipates newcomers Nicholson and Marshall Lambert will have an impact. Butterfly: Senior captain Michael Volpe and Krause highlight the Bison butterfly swimmers. Volpe ranks fourth in program history in the 200 fly and fifth in the 100 fly and is the fastest current team member in those events. He finished 13th in the 100 fly and ninth in the 200 fly at last year’s championship meet. Krause had a strong rookie season, scoring in the 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM at the Patriot League Championships. He ranks seventh in program history in the 200 fly and his name shows up on three top-10 lists overall. His 1:52.38 in the 200 fly was the fastest by any Bison last year by more than a second. Suchomel, who scored in the 100 and 200 fly at last year’s championship, should have an even better season with another year of experience. Reitz should also have a chance to break into the butterfly lineup, in addition to his sprint free duties, while classmate Nicholson is also expected to be a solid contributor. IM: Bucknell has traditionally done well in the IM events and that should be no different in 2010-11 as Schinnerer expects a number of swimmers to score. Krause and Treat, who were both All-Patriot League selections, were finalists in the 200, while Krause also posted a sixth-place showing in the 400. Four current Bison show up on the program’s 200 IM top-10 list, including Treat (3rd), Krause (7th), Volpe (t-9th) and Frye (t-9th). Krause (2nd) and Podniesinski (3rd) are listed among the fastest in program history in the 400 IM. Nicholson, who will also compete in the breast and fly, has the ability to stand out in the IM as a freshman. Relays: Bucknell finished second to Navy in every relay at last year’s Patriot League Championships and Schinnerer expects the Bison to be in the mix for the top two spots in virtually every relay once again in 2011. Approximately threefourths of the relay swimmers return and there are plenty of new faces to fill the holes left by the likes of Fletcher and Trafton, the main departures. Diving: For a second consecutive year sophomore All-Patriot Leaguer David Magaro will be the lone diver on the Bison roster. Despite being a solo act, Magaro produced plenty of points for Bucknell last year. At the league championships he finished second off the one-meter board and fourth off the three-meter, setting new personal bests for each discipline. He now ranks second in program history off the one-meter (295.65) and third off the three-meter (287.45). “Dave did a great job for us last year,” praised Schinnerer. “If you have only one diver, there are not too many a coach would pick over him.”

Coaching Staff Dan Schinnerer

Robert A. Latour Head Swimming & Diving Coach

Yale ’01 Fifth Season: 21-15 (M)/21-15 (W) Dan Schinnerer, who was named the Patriot League Men’s Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2010, enters his fifth season as the head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at Bucknell. In his first four seasons at the helm of the Bison, 11 school records fell on the men’s side (500 free, 1,000 free, 1,650 free, 100 back, 200 back, 400 individual medley and five relays) and the squad has captured seven individual and one relay title at the Patriot League Championships. The Bucknell men have finished in the top three at the league meet each of the last five years, including second each of the last three. Three different swimmers (Mark Kawczenski, Eric Sokolosky, Luke Trafton) have combined for seven individual Patriot League titles under Schinnerer’s tutelage. Under Schinnerer’s direction, the women’s team produced 10 all-league performers on the way to a second-place finish at the Patriot League Championships in his first year. In his second and third seasons, Schinnerer led the women to third-place showings at the league championships, while last February he saw the Bison surpass defending champion Colgate for second place. New records have been set in 16 events during Schinnerer’s tenure, and he guided Courtney Warren to a pair of Patriot League backstroke crowns. Prior to becoming the frontman for the Bison in the summer of 2006, the 2001 Yale graduate was an assistant coach with Michigan’s nationally ranked men’s swimming team. Schinnerer had been associated with the vaunted Michigan program since 2003, first as a volunteer assistant and then as a full-time assistant coach beginning in July 2004. Over his last three seasons the Wolverines finished fifth, sixth and eighth, respectively, at the NCAA Championships, and in each of his last two years they produced two NCAA individual champions. Schinnerer, who served as the team’s recruiting coordinator and budget administrator, designed and implemented the training program for the sprint and breaststroke group. He was able to work with Olympic-caliber swimmers, including Michigan student assistant coach Michael Phelps, who won six gold medals and eight total medals at the 2004 Olympics in AthDan Schinnerer accepts his ens and added a record 2010 Patriot League Coach of the Year award eight gold medals at the with the rest of the Bison staff. 2008 Beijing Olympics. Pittsburgh ’07 Second Season

Denison ’07 Second Season

Assistant Coach

Andrew Sheaff is in his second season as an assistant coach at Bucknell. He came to Lewisburg after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Maryland the previous two years while he was obtaining a master’s degree in exercise physiology. Sheaff, who graduated summa cum laude from Pittsburgh in 2007, was a research assistant in the Maryland Kinesiogenomics Laboratory while in College Park. During his senior year at Pittsburgh and immediately following graduation, Sheaff performed internships with the Cleveland Browns and the University of Pittsburgh football teams. He helped with strength and conditioning aspects of athlete development at both stops. As an undergraduate, Sheaff was a four-year member of the Panthers’ swimming and diving team. He was a four-time Big East Academic All-Star and a fourtime University Scholar-Athlete. Additionally, Sheaff posted the highest gradepoint average on the team twice and also posted perfect 4.0s on four occasions.

competed on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. The Wolverines placed five swimmers with Michigan ties on the 2005 USA World Championship Team, and the Club Wolverine squad swept the men’s, women’s and combined titles at the national championships in the summer of 2006. At Michigan, Schinnerer apprenticed under a pair of legendary head coaches in Jon Urbanchek and Bob Bowman. Urbanchek, an American Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Famer, won a national championship and 13 Big Ten titles in 22 years at Michigan, and he coached Dan Schinnerer in every Olympic Games from 1984 through 2004. He sent 28 of his Wolverine swimmers to the Olympics, and eight of those athletes combined to win 15 medals. Bowman took over the program in April 2004 after a successful nine-year stint at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, where Phelps was one of his prized pupils. For his accomplishments with North Baltimore, Bowman won the USA Swimming and the American Swimming Coaches Association Coach of the Year Awards in 2001 and 2003. He was also named the USA Swimming Developmental Coach of the Year in 2002. Schinnerer was also heavily involved in Michigan’s highly regarded summer swimming camp program, where he mentored both girls and boys aged 9-18. As assistant camp director and head coach of the intensive camp, he worked with many top young swimmers on stroke technique and training principles. At Yale, Schinnerer was a four-year swimming letterman, where he graduated in 2001 with a bachelor of arts degree in history. As a member of the Bulldogs swimming team, he was a Senior Nationals qualifier and was the recipient of the William Leeming Jellife Award for “greatest progress and development in swimming ability and outstanding leadership during his college years.” The Grand Rapids, Mich., native went on to teach history and serve as assistant swimming coach at The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. He helped Peddie to an Eastern Interscholastic Prep School girls’ title in 2002 and a boys’ championship in 2003. Schinnerer coached multiple NISCA All-Americans, U.S. Open qualifiers and senior national qualifiers at Peddie. At Bucknell, Schinnerer took over a storied Bison swimming and diving program that has excelled since moving into the state-of-the-art Kinney Natatorium in 2002-03. Bucknell’s women captured four straight Patriot League championships from 2003-2006, while the Bison men won the title in 2003 and have finished among the top three teams over the past five seasons. The Bucknell men won the 1964 NCAA College Division championship and have won 18 conference titles since 1960. Schinnerer resides in Lewisburg with his wife Lesia, and their sons Kase and Erik.

Assistant Coach

A 2007 graduate of Denison University and a four-year member of the Big Red’s nationally ranked swimming and diving team, Mary Dain joined Dan Schinnerer’s Bucknell staff in August 2009. Dain, who spent the previous two years as a graduate assistant swimming and diving coach and physcial education instructor at Trinity College, earned All-America honors all four years she was a studentathlete at Denison. She was the team Rookie of the Year in 2004 and was voted MVP in 2006. The Big Red finished third and fourth in NCAA Division III during Dain’s tenure. A two-time Academic All-American, Dain graduated from Denison with a degree in communications with a physical education-sports management minor. Dain is in the process of earning a master’s degree in English from Trinity. In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Dain has served as a swim coach and lifeguard at a country club and has conducted private swimming lessons for nearly a decade.

Coaching/Support Staff Carl Milofsky

Sandy Elion Assistant Coach

Academic Advisor

Connecticut College 17th Season Sandy Elion is in her 17th season as a member of the Bucknell coaching staff. A teacher and co-director of the elementary program at the West Branch School in nearby Williamsport for the last 30 years, Elion brings to Bucknell a wealth of swimming knowledge and experience. In the Bison program, Elion’s primary responsibility is working with the stroke group. Elion has a bachelor of arts degree in child development from Connecticut College and a master’s degree in education from the University of Iowa. A consistent record-setter in many midwestern and central U.S. swimming championships, Elion competed in the 1962-63 U.S. National Championships. She also competed for eight years on a Central AAU (now U.S. Swimming) team, serving as captain for three years. After a two-year stint as waterfront director at Seaside Regional Center in Waterford, Conn., Elion’s coaching experience included several years of age group coaching first at the Susquehanna Valley Aquatics Club and then at the Williamsport YMCA. Most recently, Elion coached at Williamsport High School from 1988-93, helping lead the team to four District IV titles. She also has plenty of experience as a volunteer coach, stroke specialist and stroke judge in the Williamsport area. Elion and her husband, Bucknell professor Carl Milofsky, have four adult children: Jude, Nina, Tessa and Jake.

Errol Carter Diving Coach

Connecticut ’96 15th Season Former University of Connecticut standout diver Errol Carter enters his 15th season as coach of the Bison men’s and women’s diving program. The 2009 Patriot League Diving Coach of the Year, Carter graduated from UConn in 1996 with a bachelor of science degree in therapeutic recreational services. He concluded an internship at the Institute of Living in Hartford over the summer of 1998, which completed his undergraduate requirements. While at UConn, Carter was a four-year letterwinner as a diver with the Huskies aquatics program. He advanced to the Big East finals off the three-meter board in both his sophomore (1993-94) and junior (1994-95) seasons. He was also a conference finalist off the one-meter board in 1993-94. Carter helped his team win its first New England championship in 1994-95 by placing fifth on both boards. Carter, in 2003, helped Bison diver Adam Freeman to a Patriot League title and several school-record performances. In 2005, he coached Freeman and Erika Mannix to the NCAA Zone “A” Diving Championships. In recent years Carter helped Rebecca Bersani to four consecutive all-league nods, Allison FitzPatrick earn her first all-league citation as a senior in 2010 and he helped David Magaro earn all-league honors as a freshman the same year. In Lewisburg, Carter volunteers his time with the community diving team, and he also helped run a diving camp at West Chester University.

Brandeis ’70 16th Season Assistant coach Sandy Elion’s husband, Carl Milofsky, enters his 16th season as the faculty representative with the Bison swimming program. Milofsky has been a professor of sociology at Bucknell since 1982. Originally from Milwaukee, Wis., Milofsky was a professor at Yale University for four years before arriving in Lewisburg. He also taught at the City University of New York and the University of Chicago prior to his stint at Yale. Milofsky received his bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University in 1970, and completed both master’s and doctoral work at the University of California at Berkeley. Milofsky served as chairperson of Bucknell’s Sociology Department several times and was the editor of the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. He is also the author of three books: Special Education — A Sociological Study of California Programs, Testers and Testing — A Sociology of School Psychology and Community Organizations — Studies in Resource Mobilization and Exchange.

Pam Armold

Aquatics Coordinator

Vermont ’77 Ninth Season Pam Armold, former head women’s swimming coach at Cornell and most recently an assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach at Yale, is in her ninth year in the position of aquatics coordinator at Bucknell. Armold oversees the daily operations of Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium and Sojka Pavilion. She coordinates all pool-related operations, including programming and facility scheduling for varsity, recreation and outside use. Armold is also responsible for training and scheduling lifeguards, as well as aquatics event management. A 1977 graduate of the University of Vermont, Armold had served as assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach at Yale from 1998 to 2002. That followed a 10-year stint at Cornell, the first eight as an assistant men’s and women’s coach, and the final two (1996-98) as head women’s coach after the Big Red program restructured. Armold, who received a master of science degree in physical education from Ithaca College in 1980, took her first head coaching position in the fall of 1980 at Humboldt State, where she coached the women’s swimming team and lectured in the physical education department for eight years. She has a wealth of recreational swimming experience as well, having served as an instructor in swimming, water safety and lifeguard training. Armold also managed a pair of swimming pools in Glendale, Calif., during her stint at Humboldt State. Armold is certified by the American Red Cross in the areas of water safety instructor training, water safety instruction, lifeguard instruction and first aid/ CPR instruction.

The Robert A. Latour Endowment Bucknell trustee William D. Dearstyne Jr., a member of the Class of 1962, established the Robert A. Latour Varsity Swimming and Diving Endowment. Dearstyne’s significant gift to the university permanently endows the head coaching position for swimming and diving, along with providing funds for the program. Latour began coaching at Bucknell in 1956. In 12 years, he led his swim teams to an overall 83-31 record in dual meets and six Middle Atlantic Conference championships. The Plan for Bucknell/Mission Statement The Plan for Bucknell

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,583 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University. The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation Mission Statement

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholarathletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.
