Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence
Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •
According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 10 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2009, Bucknell ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 118 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 255 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

In addition to the 118 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 293 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 17 more in 2009-10.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 16 times in the 20-year history of the affiliation, including 12 of the last 13 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2009-10. It was the 13th straight year and the 16th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2009-10, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, baseball and softball. Additionally, the women’s water polo team captured the CWPA Southern Division championship, and the wrestling team sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships and produced two All-Americans.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics
A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Returning are the Orange and Blue’s No. 1 singles player, No. 1 doubles team, two All-Patriot League selections and six players who totaled 72 singles victories in 2009-10, but Bucknell men’s tennis will still feature several new faces. Six of the Bison’s 10 players are sophomores or younger, and the Bison are hoping the new-look squad will have what it takes to bring them to their first Patriot League Championship match. Bucknell has advanced Josh Katten to the Patriot League Tournament semifinals in each of the last four seasons. Clearing that final hurdle is the next goal on the team’s list, and ninth-year head coach Rebecca Helt thinks they have the tools to get it done. “We expect Anton (Kovic) to be a big force back in that lineup again. I think it’s definitely going to be a stronger lineup this year,” said Helt, adding that as always, the starting six will make themselves known as the coaches get better feel for their student-athletes’ playing styles during the fall tournament season. “It’s going to be a very different look,” the head coach continued. “We’ve had three major impact freshmen come in. They’ll most definitely make an immediate impact on that lineup somewhere.” The freshman trio of Scott Bernstein, Kyle Rosen and Chris Tortora will join two Bison – senior co-captains Kovic and Mark Malloy – who have already made an impact on the lineup. Kovic moved into the No. 1 position in both singles and doubles as a junior last season and shouldered the load admirably. He recorded double-digit wins in singles for the second time in his career, while accomplishing the same feat in doubles for the third consecutive season. After moving into ninth place in career doubles victories (47-43) at Bucknell last year, Kovic is also knocking on the top-15 list in combined victories (75-77). Malloy will look to move back into the starting lineup after missing his entire junior year after studying abroad. The 2009 Second Team All-Patriot League selection is now expected to reclaim his former success. “He was a very, very successful player his sophomore year. He played No. 3 and just had an outstanding year,” said Helt. “In January right before coming back to school he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He took the semester off and had surgery, but he’s back and he’s playing really well.” Bucknell’s other returning veterans include juniors Gregg Cohenca and Gregory Maxson. Cohenca, who played primarily second singles last year, finished second on the squad in singles wins with a record of 14-16. That marked his first year to date reaching the double-digit mark, while his 15 doubles victories was also a career-high. Maxson has reached double-digit wins in each of his first two seasons in the Orange and Blue while playing primarily at sixth singles. As a sophomore last year, Maxson tallied a 12-12 singles mark, which included a season-high five-match winning streak in March. Bucknell’s youth movement started last season as the Bison brought in a corps of now-sophomores that posted some of the

team’s strongest numbers. Josh Katten became Bucknell’s first freshman to earn an All-Patriot League nod, garnering secondteam honors after leading the team in singles (17-14) and doubles (19-9) victories. Katten and classmate Evan Zimmer went 10-1 in doubles together, making them the winningest Bison duo last spring. Zimmer also experienced success in his own right, going 10-4 in singles, including a perfect 5-0 against Patriot League opponents. Kelly Morque, who played his way to the top of the lineup as Kovic’s doubles partner at the No. 1 position, shot out of the gates in his debut campaign. Morque won four of his first five singles matches and five of six contests in doubles when he first took to the courts for Bucknell. He eventually finished his season with a 13-14 doubles record, including an 8-3 mark during the fall tournament schedule. Bucknell’s season gets underway with the Northeast Intercollegiate in Providence, R.I., Sept. 17-19, with the Bison’s first home event – the Bucknell Invitational – is slated for Oct. 1-3. Dual action will get into full swing on Feb. 4 at Niagara before the Bison open Patriot League play in Annapolis, Md., taking on Navy, which knocked them out of the league tournament a year ago. Bucknell’s schedule, including its eight home events, will culminate with the Patriot League Championships April 15-17 in Bethlehem, Pa.

Bucknell women’s tennis continued on its road of success last season, and the Bison see no reason for that to change. A year after claiming a 14-7 record overall, including a 4-1 tally in the Patriot League, and advancing to the Patriot League Championship match for the sixth consecutive season vs. Army, Bucknell is counting on its wealth of Lauren Lucido experience to keep it at the top of its game. “We lost a good amount of talent from last year, but I think we’re still a very solid and deep team,” said Rebecca Helt, who is entering her 14th season as the women’s head coach. “We’ve added three freshmen who have the potential to contribute in that starting six, and we have three seniors in that starting lineup. I think it’s going to be a strong squad. “Having three seniors, there’s a high level of experience on the team,” Helt continued. “We certainly have learned a lot based on our results over the past three or four years of finishing second. Every year we go into the season with more experience and more confidence. Experience is a strength.” The 2010-11 season will see a changing of the guards at the first singles position with the graduation of the reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Tania Varela, but change is not

bad thing for the Bison when they have Lauren Lucido as the replacement. After three seasons, Lucido, who is also one of Bucknell’s three captains this year, is ranked in the top six in program annals in singles (64-26), doubles (67-21) and combined (131-47) victories. Despite playing primarily at No. 2 singles, she also holds a 10-1 career record in at the first position. That proven success is reason for the Bison to smile. “Lucido’s definitely going to be our No. 1,” said Helt of the three-time All-Patriot League selection. “She had an outstanding year last year, just unbelievable. I see her stepping up into that No. 1 spot and having a very solid year. I think she’s looking to chase some records.” Lucido needs 23 singles victories to take over the record from Tanya Sichko, a feat that seems possible after averaging just over 21 wins in her first three years and setting a career-best total of 28 victories as a junior. Although Lucido seems to be the clear choice to take the top spot in the lineup, the remaining starting five are not yet set in stone. “From there down, we’re just going to have to see how it plays out through the fall with the tournaments and see how much people have improved since last year,” said Helt. “We’ll sort through some positions as the year goes on.” Despite the uncertainty in the early goings, Bucknell knows it can rely on Lucido’s fellow seniors and co-captains, Dara Dwojewski and Lauren Rottkamp, to help anchor the team. Like their classmate, Dwojewski and Rottkamp have also broken onto the top-25 lists in victories. Rottkamp, who recorded a career-high 14 wins in singles last year, is tied for 17th in career singles victories with 36, while Dwojewski’s name appears among the leaders in career singles (31), doubles (28) and combined (59) wins. Both took their Army opponent to three sets in the Patriot League Championship match last season as well, forcing one of the closest outcomes in league history. The Bison’s junior class of Courtney Casey and Dumitrita Iepuras also brings its fair share of expertise. Iepuras is the more decorated of the two, having been named Second Team All-Patriot League in each of her first two seasons and posting some of the highest wins totals on the squad. The native of Moldova has 46 total singles victories – 23 each year – and last season became more of a doubles threat for the Bison after improving her performance from three wins as a freshman to 18 a year ago. Casey, who played predominantly at the No. 6 position, finished 10-3 in singles as a sophomore, including a 7-1 mark in dual competition. She also picked up steam in doubles as the year wore on, winning nine of her final 11 matches with former teammate Carlin Calcaterra. In dual competition last season, Bucknell went 43-17 (.717) as a team in doubles. Guiding the squad to that total was Lucido and Varela, who on top of claiming an 18-2 record together, set the program’s single-season mark for longest winning streak (18). Close behind was Iepuras and sophomore Daria Tuzhikova, who teamed up for a 15-5 record in the spring. Tuzhikova ultimately finished her debut campaign with 20 doubles victories, tying her with Varela for second on the team. A youthful quartet will give Bucknell even more options for the lineup in 2010-11. Sophomore Jennie Ciotti and incoming freshmen Kendyl Green, Elizabeth Morgan and Elena Vidrascu provide even more depth for the Bison. Bucknell’s fall tournament season gets started in a hurry as the Orange and Blue will host the Bucknell Invitational Sept. 17-19. Dual competition will get underway in February, leading off with Pittsburgh, while Patriot League action kicks off at Navy on March 27. The Bison will ultimately play for their seventh trip to the league championship with the Midshipmen hosting the tournament April 22-24 in Annapolis, Md.

Head Coach 14th Season (Women) Ninth Season (Men) Lock Haven ’90 Rebecca Helt is in her 14th season as head coach of the women’s tennis team, and her ninth at the helm of the men’s program. As coach of the Bison women’s squad, Helt has notched a 148-120 record. With the men’s squad, she has recorded a 70-106 mark. Helt has led the Bison women’s squad to six consecutive Patriot League championship matches, while in 2008 the men finished above .500 for the first time since 2002. During her Bucknell career, Helt has coached 16 All-Patriot League singles players in Veronica Brown, Nada Curcic, Paulina Gamboa, Ashley Globerman, Chelsea Mills and Tanya Sichko on the women’s side and Ira Reibeisen and Ryan Sandburg on the men’s. Additionally, current players Dumitrita Iepuras, Lauren Lucido, Josh Katten and Mark Malloy have earned All-Patriot League honors. Iepuras was also named the 2009 Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Last year, Lucido and Tania Varela were first-team All-PL choices, while Varela was also selected the league’s Player of the Year. The former Bison also became the only player to earn first-team honors four times in her career, topping Helt’s list of multi-year selections that also includes Gamboa (2007, 2008, 2009), Curcic (2004, 2005) and Brown (2005, 2006). Reibeisen, who ranks second on Bucknell’s all-time wins list, earned three consecutive First Team All-Patriot League men’s honors, the first Bison to ever accomplish that feat. Helt also coached one all-league doubles team in Kerry Callaghan and Kristin Inglis. Callaghan was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2000. Helt also had the opportunity to coach a Patriot League Sportsmanship Award winner, Asher Salam. In 2005, Curcic was named the first PL Player of the Year in the history of the program. A 1990 graduate of Lock Haven University, Helt earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism while competing for the Lock Haven tennis team. Following her college graduation, Helt earned a teaching certification from the United States Professional Tennis Registry and began teaching part time while working for STEP, Inc., in its wilderness-based team building program. In 1994, Helt was hired as the assistant pro at West Branch Racquet Club in Williamsport, Pa. She continued her duties at West Branch while coaching the girls’ tennis team at Williamsport High School. Two years later, Helt was hired at the Doylestown Racquet Club in Doylestown, Pa. She has won three different raquetball state championships. Helt took over the women’s coaching reins at Bucknell in 1997, and in 2002 she was named the Bison men’s coach as well. Helt is also involved in tennis on the national level as an NCAA chair for women’s tennis. Helt continues her involvement in the game outside of Bucknell’s program. Recently, the Bucknell tennis programs received a generous grant from USTA to promote tennis in the local community. Helt also volunteers during the summer as a Special Olymsport advisor, Rebecca Helt meets with Evan Zimmer and pics where she works Josh Katten during a changeover with various events.
Assistant Coach Third Season Florida Gulf Coast ’06
Stephen Schram, a certified United States Professional Tennis Association teaching professional, enters his third season as assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at Bucknell. Prior to joining the Bison, Schram, who is a 2006 graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University with a degree in political science, served as assistant women’s tennis coach at Radford University in Virginia and as assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at Wofford College in South Carolina. Schram played college tennis at the University of Charleston in 2001-2002, before transferring to FGCU, where he earned three letters in men’s tennis. He spent 2003 as a tennis instructor at the Tough Tennis Academy in Naples, Fla., where he lived, worked and trained. While there, he taught nationally ranked junior players between the ages of 12 and 18. Following his graduation from FGCU, Schram began working at Wofford College, where he organized practices and individual on-court workouts and assisted with recruiting. In the spring of 2007, the men’s tennis team at Wofford achieved a record number of victories against Division I opponents. Schram took on similar assistant coaching duties at Radford University. A native of Zanesville, Ohio, Schram spent the summers of 20072009 as a coach and instructor at the University of Notre Dame Tennis Camp. He also spent the summer of 2009 as a camp instructor at Pepperdine University.

Bucknell Men’s Tennis: A Rich Tradition WILLIAM CARSON (1942) -- Served as team captain in 1942 ... was part of the 1941 team that turned in a 10-2 record, while the 1942 team finished the season with just one loss (7-1 overall). GEORGE McCALL (1942) -- Had an 18-6 singles record for Bucknell between 1938-42 ... won the 1964 National Indoor and Outdoor Hardcourt and French Open master’s doubles championships ... later served as first commissioner of World Team Tennis. PAUL REMMEY (1953) -- Played number one singles for the Bison for three years, compiling a record of 28-12 ... his dual-match victory total was a school record for nearly 20 years ... reached the semifinals at the Eastern Championships. WHEELER NEFF (1970) -- Finished up his career with a singles record of 27-11 and three varsity letters ... was part of the 1969 team that went 7-0 in MAC play and won the northern division and the 1970 team that went undefeated (14-0), a feat which hadn’t been accomplished since 1938. ALEX ANDERSON (1971) -- Compiled impressive 38-2 singles record from 1969-71, and played on three Middle Atlantic Conference championship teams ... won 33 straight matches, still a school record ... lost just two sets in 14 matches in 1970. Tennis Alumni in Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame William C. Bartol (1887): William Bartol, a pioneer of baseball and tennis at Bucknell and head of the mathematics department for 46 years, is generally given credit for creating the nickname “Bisons” for Bucknell athletic teams. An outstanding student and athlete as an undergraduate, he also served as head of the engineering department and as director of the observatory. Bartol played on baseball teams that lost only one game in four years while helping raise funds in support of the Athletic Association. About 1910, he suggested that the nickname “Bisons” be adopted for Bucknell teams because of the proximity of the campus to areas populated by the American bison in the late 1700s. Bartol, who died in 1940 at the age of 92, was connected with Bucknell longer than any other person in its history as a student, teacher and university historian. Bartol entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1987.

Malcolm E. Musser (’18): A basketball and tennis player as an undergraduate and later varsity basketball coach and freshman football and baseball coach, Musser probably coached, taught and watched more Bucknell athletes than any other person. Musser entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1979. Thomas A. Thompson (’60): A three-year starter in baseball and basketball and captain of both teams, Thompson pitched in the Detroit Tigers system and has coached baseball, basketball, golf and tennis teams at Bucknell. Thompson entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1986.
Malcolm Musser
Alexander Anderson (’71): A three-year letterman in tennis and captain his senior year. Anderson had a career singles record of 38-2. He continues to hold the school record for consecutive match victories at 33, and is third in career singles match winning percentage at .950. Anderson entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1999. Stephen W. Baird (’72): The 1971 MAC fall tennis champion, Baird was an Eastern singles semifinalist and doubles finalist in 1972 and had a career 38-1 singles record. President of the American Platform Tennis Association, Baird is a five-time national champion in the sport. Baird entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

Marjorie A. Deck (’73): Co-captain of the field hockey and basketball teams, Deck was also undefeated in tennis dual matches in her career and ranked fifth in the East as a senior. Deck is often referred to as one of the pioneers of women’s tennis at Bucknell having played on the team before women’s sports gained varsity status in the fall of 1973. Women’s tennis was given varsity status only months after Deck’s graduation. Her success on the club team had much to do with the upgrade of women’s tennis to varsity status. Deck entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1989. Ed Hess (’90): One of the best tennis players in Bucknell history, Hess held the school record for singles victories at 60 until the fall of 2007, while accumulating only three singles losses during his career. He stands eighth on the singles-doubles combined win list at 101 and is 13th on Bucknell’s all-time doubles victories list. Hess won the East Coast Conference singles title in 1987, 1989 and 1990, in addition to two conference doubles titles. His teams won three ECC team championships, posting a 38-12 record in those seasons. Hess entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2003. Rose Ewan: One of Bucknell’s leading promoters of women’s athletics, Ewan was involved with Bison Athletics in various capacities for 25 years. As head women’s tennis coach for 18 years (1979-97), she compiled a 183-120-1 dual-match record and led the Bison to Patriot League championships in 1992 and 1994. Ewan also was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year following both championship seasons. From September 1991 to October 1992 the team won a school-record 25 straight matches. The 1991-92 team finished 16-1 and was part of a five-year stretch in which it went 64-9. Upon arriving at Bucknell in 1978, Ewan served as head coach of the field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams for one year, coordinator of women’s athletics in 1980, associate director of athletics in 1990 and eventually associate athletic director for recreation services prior to her retirement. Most importantly, Ewan successfully guided women’s athletics at Bucknell through a difficult transition period, including the merger of the men’s and women’s athletic departments. Ewan will enter the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2010.

Patriot League Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2009-10 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following: • 11 Patriot League student-athletes earned CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, with Army’s Andrew Maisano (Men’s Lacrosse), Erin Anthony (Women’s Basketball) and Elizabeth Betterbed (Women’s Soccer), Navy’s Beth Reed (Women’s Soccer), Alex Buck (Men’s Swimming and Diving) and Mark Van Orden (Track and Field) and Bucknell’s Patrick Selwood (Men’s Soccer) receiving First-Team Academic All-America recognition. • 50 Patriot League student-athletes received CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors. • The Patriot League placed second among all Division I conferences with 90 teams receiving NCAA Public Recognition Awards for their performance in the classroom. • Navy’s Beth Reed and Mark Van Orden received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. • Reed was also named the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Women’s Soccer Academic All-American of the Year, and won the Patriot League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. • Army’s Andrew Maisano won the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for Men’s Lacrosse, and earned the Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. • Army’s Elizabeth Betterbed was selected as a Rhodes Scholar. • Holy Cross’ Olivia Pruszko earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship. • Fordham’s John Skelton became the first Patriot League player taken in the NFL Draft since 1995. • Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum was named the ECAC Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year and received multiple national freshman honors. • Navy’s Adam Meyer was named the Mid-Major Swimmer of the Year by CollegeSwimming.com, and received Honorable Mention All-America honors at the NCAA Championship Meet. • Bucknell won the 2010 Patriot League Presidents’ Cup. The Bison also won the male and female trophies. It was the eighth time in Patriot League history that a school won the overall, male and female titles. • Every Patriot League team won at least one championship for just the fifth time in League history. • Army Men’s Lacrosse defeated No. 2 Syracuse, 9-8, in double overtime in the NCAA Tournament first round. • Bucknell defeated Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament. • Three Patriot Leaguers were selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, while a pair were chosen in the Major Lacrosse League Draft. • Army’s Garret Thul was named national freshman of the year by Inside Lacrosse.
Bucknell Athletics Mission Statement
The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. Patriot League Standings/Tournament For the first time in two years, both Bucknell men’s and women’s tennis will take to the road for the Patriot League Tournament. The men’s team will travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for the tournament, which is slated for April 15-17. The Kenneth Langone Athletics & Recreation Center The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 16 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 20 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 118 Academic All-Americans in 40 years and 118 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 20 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholarathlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the West Fields softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

CALENDAR A typical recruiting calendar for a prospective student-athlete interested in tennis would go something like this: ** Junior Year -- contact head coach Rebecca Helt if Bucknell falls within your top five list of potential colleges. Send a letter expressing interest in the tennis program. It would be helpful to include a transcript. Also, the student-athlete should be registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse. See your high school athletics director or guidance counselor for information. ** Summer of 2011 -- make unofficial visits to schools of interest. ** September of 2011 -- Head coach Rebecca Helt will be in contact regarding student-athlete’s interest and possible visit date. Student-athlete and family should file CSS Financial Aid Profile Form available October 15. See your college guidance counselor for information. ** November 15, 2011 -- Deadline for Admissions and Financial Aid for Early Decision I. ** Late December, 2011 -- Target date for Admissions letters to go out for Early Decision I candidates. ** January 15, 2012 -- Deadline for Admissions and Financial Aid for Regular Decision and Early Decision II. ** Late January, 2012 -- Target date for Admissions decision letters to go out for Early Decision II candidates. **Late March, 2012 -- Target date for Admissions decision letters to go out for Regular Decision candidates. ** Mid-April, 2012 -- Target date for open house weekend for all accepted applicants. ** May 1, 2012 -- Deadline for securing spot in class of 2016 with deposit. CLEARINGHOUSE The NCAA mandates that all student-athletes interested in competing at the Division I or II level be certified through the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse. Contact high school coaches, athletics director and/or guidance counselor for necessary paperwork. CONTACTS As per NCAA by-law 13.02.3, a contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Any such faceto-face encounter that is prearranged or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s high school, or at the site of organized competition or practice involving the prospect’s high school, prepartory school, twoyear college, or all-star team is considered a contact, regardless of the conversation that occurs. We are limited to three off-campus contact days per prospective student-athlete. CORRESPONDENCE It’s important that the prospective student-athlete get in touch with Head Coach Rebecca Helt as soon as possible. A simple letter of inquiry or email to helt@bucknell.edu into the tennis program will initiate the recruiting process. In the spring of your junior year is the most appropriate time to contact Coach Helt. ADMISSIONS DEADLINES November 15, 2011 -- Early Decision I Application and Financial Aid deadline January 1, 2012 -- Early Decision II and Regular Decision Application and Financial Aid deadline.
EARLY DECISION Students who are absolutely, 100% confident Bucknell is their top college choice are encouraged to apply during the Early Decision process. Advantages are that you’ll have an Admissions decision prior to Christmas and all students accepted during the early decision process are guaranteed financial aid for which they qualify. EVALUATIONS As per NCAA by-law 13.02.6.1, an evaluation is any off-campus activity designed to assess the academic qualifications or athletic ability of a prospect, including any visit to a prospect’s educational institution (during which no contact occurs) or the observation of a prospect participating in any practice or competition at any site. We are limited in our number of evaluations per prospective student-athlete. FINANCIAL AID Bucknell University does not offer athletic scholarships in the sport of tennis. All financial aid is awarded on the basis of need. Prospective student-athletes should complete the CSS “Profile Form” in the early Fall. INTERVIEWS Head Coach Rebecca Helt strongly encourages all prospective studentathletes to arrange for an on-campus interview with the Admissions Office. If it is not possible to interview on campus, alumni interviews are highly recommended. All interviews should be arranged through the Admissions Office by calling 570-577-1101. TELEPHONE CALLS As per NCAA by-law 13.1.3.1, institutional staff members may not telephone a prospect (or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians) prior to July 1 following the prospect’s completion of the junior year in high school. However, the prospect can call the tennis office at any time. After July 1, institutional staff members may telephone a prospect once per week (measured Sunday through Saturday). The once-per-week limit applies to the entire institution. VISITS, Official According to NCAA by-law 13.7.1.2, a prospect may not make more than five expense-paid visits to NCAA member institutions, regardless of the number of sports in which the prospect is involved. An institution may not provide an expense-paid visit to a prospect who has not presented the institution with a high school (or college) academic transcript and a score from a PSAT, an SAT, a PACTPlus, or an ACT test taken on a national testing date under national testing conditions. The official visit may not exceed 48 hours. Coach Helt encourages these visits take place from September 1 to February 15. VISITS, Unofficial According to NCAA by-law 13.8.1, a prospect may visit an institution’s campus at the prospect’s own expense an unlimited number of times and may make an unofficial visit before the prospect’s senior year in high school.
