Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur. Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands. Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of four Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the spring of 2010 Bucknell is scheduled to play eight games inside the gorgeous facility.
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A BISON “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson in his book Won in the Ninth,, written in 1910 Ninth
The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •
According to federal data released by the NCAA in the fall of 2008, Bucknell’s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was second-highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years. With a four-class average of 89 percent, Bucknell trailed only Davidson (92 percent) among all Division I institutions reporting federal graduation rates (the Ivy League and military academies do not report federal graduation rates). Georgetown, Notre Dame and Holy Cross were also at 89 percent. Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate is identical to its overall student-body average of 89 percent.

In addition to the 118 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 281 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09.
A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

2010 Bucknell Women’s Water Polo SEASON OUTLOOK
Last year’s Bucknell squad had four team members tally at least 87 points and finish the season among the top 15 scorers in program history. While the Bison do return five of their top six offensive players from last year, third-year head coach John Abdou surprisingly hopes a repeat of that does not occur. Instead, the California native hopes to see a much more balanced Bucknell offensvie attack in 2010. “More so than any other year our emphasis on team play will be pronounced this year,” mentioned Abdou during the preseason. “In our losses in recent years we have had people score multiple goals, but we want to get back to seven, eight different people scoring goals in the box score. That’s when we have been successful.” In addition to having a more balanced offensive attack, Abdou hopes the Bison can avoid the late-season swoon they encountered during last year’s postseason. Bucknell posted an eight-game winning streak to stretch its record to 18-11 heading into the final regular-season contest againt nationally ranked Indiana. The Bison lost a 7-4 decision to the Hoosiers and then proceeded to drop two overtime games at the Southern Championships and all three outings at the Eastern Championship to conclude the campaign on a six-game losing streak and finish 18-17. To combat that problem this year, Abdou has scheduled just four games in the month leading up to the Southern Championships, with none of them being on the same day. Additionally, Bucknell will play just five games on its Spring Break trip to California, rather than the eight it played last spring. While Abdou has tailored the schedule a bit, it is as difficult as ever. Five teams ranked in the preseason top 20 show up on the schedule, while league foes Maryland and Princeton were also receiving votes. The strong schedule is nothing new for this group of Bison, who have faced 21 ranked foes over the last two years. With a group of three seniors and three juniors who have all been contributors since day one, Abdou has high expectations for his squad this year. “When I look at this team, I am looking at an experienced group,” said Abdou, who will see six starters return from a team that tied Maryland for first in the conference during the regular season the last two years. “There is really nothing they haven’t been through over the last few years. Our juniors and seniors will be leading the way in terms of continuing to build this program. “The production of our senior class is vital to our success this year. Both (Shana) Palencia and (Alison) Carter are coming off injuries and if they remain healthy and (Valentina) Rozas performs up to the level she has the last few years, all three of them are among the best at their positions in the conference.” While all three seniors have been impressive over the years, none has been showered with more honors than Rozas, the first two-time Honorable Mention All-American in program history. A team co-captain along with Palencia, Rozas ranks in the top 10 in Bucknell’s record books in six different career categories, including ejections drawn (2nd, 231), shots (3rd, 456), goals (4th, 190), points (6th, 255) and steals (7th, 151). Last year the explosive offensive performer who has been named First Team All-CWPA Southern Division each of the last two years, piled up career highs in goals (73), assists (24) and points (97). Her goal total ranked second on the team and is also second on the program’s single-season list. “I think Val will continue doing what she always has done,” predicted Abdou. “She has been great for us the last three years and that should not change in 2010.” Palencia had a breakout year as a sophomore in 2008 with 42 goals and a 24 assists and she followed that up u with an even better 2009 (49g, Shana Palencia 38a), when she finished fourth on the 3 team with a career-high 87 points. t She S now ranks eighth on the career assists list with 80 and is seventh in a career sprints won (38). c A strong defensive player who is a fast swimmer, Palencia was fifth on o the team with 38 steals a year ago and a now has 134 in her career, just six s shy of 10th place on that ledger. “Shana has improved every year and a I think this is going to be her best year,” said Abdou. “She had to battle y that th injury last year and I am looking forward to seeing her produce a lot fo her h senior year. She does so much for us. u She is one of our best all-around
players.” Carter is a two-year starter in goal who has appeared in 66 games over her first three years. She ranks third on the program’s career saves list with 460, including 176 last year. A veteran of more than 1,600 minutes in cage, Carter owns a career save percentage of .515 and was an all-conference selection as a sophomore. “Alison has been working hard now for three years,” praised Abdou, who also has sophomore Brittany Connell (36 saves in 2009) to turn to in goal. “She’s primed to have a great season. She will be the leader and backbone of our defense on Alison Carter what should be a very good defensive team.” While the Bison seniors will be counted on to serve as team leaders, the junior class of Kandis Canonica, Haley Prickett and Meghan McNally has provided plenty of firepower in recent years. Canonica is just halfway through her career, but with another season like last year when she finished second on the team with a career-high 123 points, she will tie Aubrey Rowe’s program points record (358). She is already tied for third on the career assists list with 125 and will certainly break the eightyear-old record of 142 before the season is half over. Canonica also owns the top two spots on the single-season ledger with 61 and 64 helpers in her first two years. “I really want to emphasize teamwork and what Kandis can do for that teamwork,” explained Abdou about his left-hander. “I once again see Kandis as someone who will take care of the ball for us and lead our power play and frontcourt offense.” Like Palencia, Prickett battled shoulder issues throughout the 2009 campaign. After tallying 44 goals as a freshman, she registered half that total last year. However, she was still very productive, nearly doubling her assist total from 17 to 33. She is one of four returnees to enter 2010 with more than 100 career points (116). Additionally, her 57 steals were third on the team. “Haley played well despite limitations due to injuries,” said Abdou. “She still had a good season and hopefully coming off shoulder surgery she will be ready to contribute at a high level once again.” McNally is the lone junior or senior who was not a regular starter last spring, but that does not mean she does not bring experience to the pool. The Floral Park, N.Y., native appeared in 35 games and made five starts a year ago, leading a bench that saw five members see action in at least 30 games. McNally has netted nine goals, dished out 10 assists and accumulated 13 steals in her career. “Meghan has to really step up this year,” mentioned Abdou. “She improved dramatically from her freshman year to her sophomore year and now as a junior I look at her as someone who will step up.” Bucknell’s final returning starter from last year is sophomore Amanda Skonezney. The Mechanicsburg, Pa., native is the Bison’s fastest swimmer, and she showed it by winning 77 sprints, the second-best single-season total in program history. She added 27 goals and 13 assists and Abdou expects her role to expand as she continues to gain more experience. Hallie Kennan is another sophomore who gained experience last year, appearing in all 35 games, mainly off the bench. The left-hander scored 13 goals and dished out 15 assists. Sophomore Becca Shopiro also made an impact as a freshman, giving the Bison one of their deepest benches in recent memory. She tallied one goal, five assists and 13 steals while appearing in 30 games. Fellow sophomores Ariel Frankeny and Christina Wagner will try to add to the Bucknell depth in 2010. Wagner saw action in three games last year, while Frankeny and Varela did not appear in a contest as rookies. Shannon Carroll, Krystle Morgan, Tara Murao and Erica White comprise the freshman class and Abdou expects them to contribute right away, despite the experienced players ahead of them. “A key to our success is the freshman class acclimating quickly to our system,” commented Abdou. “All four of them bring talent and skill to their positions. I am really looking forward to what they can do. They all have great work ethics and come from good water polo backgrounds.”

The pledge was made in honor of Coach Dick Russell, who was at the helm of the swimming and diving programs from 1968 to 1994 and created the water polo program at Bucknell, coaching the men’s team from its inception as a varsity sport in 1977 until 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Richards were swimmers under Coach Russell during their years at Bucknell. As the Richards’ multi-year pledge is paid, an endowment will be built that generates funds to enhance Bucknell’s men’s and women’s varsity water polo programs by increasing and stabilizing the resources available for the coaches, staff and student-athletes. The Russell Endowment will provide a lasting memorial honoring the lifetime contributions of the late Hall of Fame mentor to Bucknell’s varsity water polo and swimming and diving programs. It will complement a similar endowment established for the swimming and diving programs in 2002 by William D. Dearstyne ’62 to honor former coach and director of athletics Bob Latour, and further underscores the successful tradition of the varsity aquatics p programs at Bucknell. “Bucknell is grateful to Dan and Chris Richards for setting an outstanding eexample of alumni loyalty and leadership as we enter the third year of our comp prehensive campaign,” said President Brian C. Mitchell. “Their generosity honors C Coach Russell’s important legacy, and will help future generations of studentaathletes to enjoy the same great experience that they did.” “We are extremely pleased to accept the Richards’ generous commitment, and I would like to publicly thank Dan and Chris for a gift that will directly impact tthe student-athlete experience for current and future Bucknellians,” said John P. H Hardt, director of athletics and recreation. “To me, the most rewarding aspect of tthis gift is that it comes from two former Bison student-athletes who enjoyed such a positive experience at Bucknell that they felt compelled to give back as alumni. Their leadership and financial support can serve as a model for all of our sports p programs here at Bucknell, as well as for other institutions around the country.” “This is a tremendous act of generosity that will help our programs move in tthe right direction,” said John Abdou, Bucknell’s current head men’s and women’s w water polo coach. “It is my hope that Dan and Chris’ gift will inspire others to step fforward and support the program in a similar fashion. I can’t think of a better w way to pay tribute to Coach Russell - he was truly the pioneer of water polo on the E East Coast. I am sure many of his former players and colleagues will be extremely ttouched by the Richards’ gift.” “We are very happy that we can provide the water polo program with some m much-needed support, while at the same time paying tribute to Coach Russell,” ssaid Dan Richards. “He played an important role in so many of our lives, and Chris aand I are thankful that we have the ability to make this gift in his memory.”
MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE Dan ‘78 and Chris (Peterjohn ‘76) Richards have created a matching challenge program for friends, fans and alumni of Bucknell water polo and swimming and diving to help increase long-term support for these varsity sports and honor former Bison coach Dick Russell. Up to a limit of $250,000, the Richards will accelerate payment of their multi-year $1.5 million pledge to the new “Russell Endowment” by matching qualifying gifts and pledges made by others, as follows: 1. Qualifying gifts and pledges made by individual donors, of... 2. at least $5,000 to an endowment fund named to honor Coach Dick Russell in support of the water polo and/or swimming and diving programs, 3. paid on or before June 30, 2012, plus... 4. corporate matching gifts resulting from qualified gifts and payments made by individual donors... 5. ...will be matched by accelerated pledge payments from Dan and Chris Richards into the Russell Endowment no later than Dec. 31 of the second year following the year in which the qualified gift or payment is received • Contact Todd Newcomb (570-577-1771; tnewcomb@bucknell.edu) with questions

Jerry Shreck Je Strength & Conditioning Coordinator Str Eig Eighth Year at Bucknell The strength & conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator. A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round per riodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and s sport-specifi c training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition. A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness.

CWPA INFORMATION
Becca Shopiro
Bucknell is a member of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA), which originally began as the Mid-Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association (EWPRA). The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating core. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow. Bucknell is a member of the CWPA Southern Division along with George Washington, Maryland and Princeton.
ACADEMIC AWARDS The Bucknell women’s water polo team was well represented on both the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) All-Academic team for the 2008-09 academic year. The organizations recognize student-athletes on three GPA levels: Excellent 3.20-3.40, Superior 3.41-3.70 and Outstanding 3.71-4.0, while the team honors represent those institutions whose combined GPA is over 2.75. As a team, Bucknell had a 3.00 GPA, while seven players were honored by the two organizations. 2010 Bucknell Women’s Water Polo ABOUT BUCKNELL
BUCKNELL ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT
THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL
The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the e rigorous and serious NCAA Division r I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. s Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of stum dent-athletes and the general stud dent body by encouraging personal d health, development, and balance h among intellectual, social, civic, and a physical pursuits; by celebrating p challenge and competition; and by c preparing participants for service p and a leadership in the world. Coaches and a staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportup nities aimed at increasing student n engagement, as well as strengthening e character, healthy living, teamwork, c sportsmanship, and spirit. In creats The Kenneth Langone Athletics & ing in shared experiences for students, Recreation Center faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, fa family, and friends, the Department’s fa programs add substantially to Bucknell’s ssense of community and foster lifelong relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholarathletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.
Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where more than 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core a aims to ensure that a Bucknell educat tion is challenging and engaging, with o openness to new ideas and a culture of in innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning E Experience will provide a residential l learning and living experience that c complements the academic program, in integrates the athletics and recreation p program and promotes personal growth a development and civic and ethical and r responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment ci and supportive environment of open to diversity in all its forms within a civil exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future.
