◊ Bison Good Sports ◊ In 2006, the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation announced its new “Bison Good Sports!” campaign, a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank fans for the tremendous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretakers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than supporting an atmosphere of intimidation that attempts to degrade opposing players and teams. Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence
Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •
According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 10 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2009, Bucknell ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 118 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 255 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

In addition to the 118 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 293 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 17 more in 2009-10.

With a school-record-tying eight Patriot League championships in 200910, Bucknell has now earned 81 crowns in 20 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 109 conference players of the year, 89 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 491 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 16 times in the 20-year history of the affiliation, including 12 of the last 13 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2009-10. It was the 13th straight year and the 16th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2009-10, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, baseball and softball. Additionally, the women’s water polo team captured the CWPA Southern Division championship, and the wrestling team sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships and produced two All-Americans.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics
A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

The Bison Nickname Early last century, Bucknell teams had no definitive nickname. To remedy this situation, the late William C. Bartol, a long-time professor of mathematics and astronomy at Bucknell, suggested, about 1910, that the nickname “Bisons” be adopted. Geography was the main reason for the choice of the name. Bucknell’s campus lies at the eastern end of the Buffalo Valley, which was one of the last stomping grounds of the American bison, or buffalo, in this part of

the country. At one time it is estimated that at least 10,000 bison roamed the reaches of the Buffalo Valley. As late as 1799, more than 300 were reported. The last buffalo in this section is believed to have been shot in 1800 at Buffalo Crossroads, about six miles from Bucknell. The nickname currently used by most writers and broadcasters is “Bison,” believed to be a more accurate use of the plural of the word bison.

Accomplishments 1988 - School’s 1st Conf. Title
1st 20-win season in 11 yrs. The resurgence of Bucknell’s volleyball program can be traced directly to Cindy BU’s 1st Patriot League title Opalski’s arrival in 1990. Granted the turnaround didn’t come overnight, but after a couple of years of growing pains and some energetic recruiting efforts, Opalski Patriot League Champions has transformed the Bison volleyball program into one of the top programs in the PL Champs/NCAA Tournament East. Bucknell made NCAA Tournament appearances in both 1998 and 2000 and has averaged more than 15 victories over the last 15 seasons. PL Champs/NCAA Tournament Under Opalski the Bison were recognized as the most improved team in the nation by Volleyball Monthly in 1993; recorded the best record in school history in 1995 at 26-7; won the first-ever Patriot League automatic bid to the 1998 NCAA School record 11 PL wins Tournament; and in 2003 posted a school-record 11 Patriot League wins en route to a second-place finish. The Bison have qualified for the PL Tournament in 18 of 20 years in the league under Opalski, who has been named the Patriot League 250th win as Bucknell’s coach Coach of the Year in 1995, 2000 and 2003. Opalski won her 300th career match in 2004, and with 379 career victories is the second-winningest active volleyball coach in the Patriot League. In 2006, Opalski won her 250th match as coach of the Bison. Now in her 25th season as a collegiate head coach, Opalski wrote essentially the same script at Clarion University. In her four years there (1986-1989), Opalski led Clarion to a record of 92-48 and the school’s first-ever conference title in 1988. She was selected as the American Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year in the Atlantic Region, and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year during her tenure. Opalski graduated from Southern Connecticut State in 1977 and earned a Master of Science degree from that school in 1984. A savvy outside hitter for the Owls, she played in two AIAW national tournaments and captained the squad in her senior year. From 1979 through 1985 as head coach at Maloney High School in her native Meriden, Conn., Opalski led that school to two state titles. Her resume there included six undefeated regular seasons and an eye-popping overall record of 147-11. Opalski’s success in volleyball has been documented by her 2006 induction as a player to the F.T. Maloney High School Hall of Fame and as a coach in the Connecticut Scholastic Women’s Volleyball Hall of Fame soon afterwards. Opalski worked with the U.S. Volleyball Junior Olympic Program in the 1980s, coaching the Connecticut team at numerous national qualifiers. For five years she coached and trained some of the top players that have ever come out of the Nutmeg State as well as several teams that qualified for the USVBA National tournament. During the summer, Opalski serves as a technical consultant at numerous volleyball camps throughout the East, in addition to directing the Bentley College and Kutztown University Volleyball camps.
Anna Allison enters her sixth season as a member of the Bison volleyball coaching staff this fall. A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and a member of a prominent volleyball family, Allison is a 2004 graduate of Oral Roberts University, where she was one of the top setters in Golden Eagles’ history. In 2006, she helped guide Assistant Coach former Bucknell setter Shannon Pitsch to a school single-season record total in Oral Roberts ’04 assists, which ranked first in the Patriot League. Sixth Season Allison was a First Team All-Mid Continent Conference selection three times and was named Setter of the Year in 2000 and 2002. As a senior in 2002 she shattered the Oral Roberts career assists record as well as the Mid-Con career service aces record. Oral Roberts won four straight league titles and played in four NCAA Tournaments during her playing days. A two-time team captain, Allison was also an outstanding student and earned Scholar-Athlete honors while successfully completing degrees in advertising and marketing communications. A lifelong student of the sport of volleyball, Allison’s enthusiasm and commitment to the game was influenced by her father, Antonio Carlos Moreno, who played for the Brazilian national team for 16 years and participated in four Olympic Games. Anna’s twin brother, Carlos, was an All-America setter who earned AVCA Player of the Year honors while leading BYU to the 2004 NCAA men’s national championship.

Coach Profiles/Mission Statement In 2003-04 Allison served as graduate assistant coach at Oral Roberts, where she worked closely with the Golden Eagles’ setters and assisted in scouting and recruiting. Throughout her undergraduate career she coached the ORU Club team, featuring players aged 12 to 18, as well as the 16-18 Tulsa Volleyball Club. In her native Brazil, Allison was a regular coach at the S.P. Volleyball Camp and has worked as director, recruiting manager and coach with the Moreno Corp. Over the summers, she has served on the staff of the Gold Medal Square Camp as well as the Bentley College Camp. “Our team and future recruiting classes will clearly benefit from Anna’s vast international experience and technical knowledge of the game,” said Opalski at the time of Allison’s hiring. “Her technical knowledge will benefit our setters and enhance our offensive production. I believe that she is one of the best young coaches in the country.”
Inga Kurgonaite, a 2008 graduate of Lock Haven and a former All-America selection, enters her third season as the graduate assistant volleyball coach with the Bison volleyball program. As a Third Team All-America choice in 2006, Kurgonaite led Lock Haven to three straight NCAA Elite Eight appearances (2004-2006), three NCAA Atlantic Region championships (2004-2006) and a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) titles (2004, 2006). A four-time All-Atlantic Region selection, she ended her career with the Lady Eagles third on the program’s kills list (1,459), third in hitting percentage (.303) and fourth in blocks (426). She piled up a team-high 359 kills as a senior and registered at least 20 kills in a match
four times. Named to the All-PSAC Team four times, Kurgonaite was an Honorable Mention All-America choice as a sophomore when she tallied 89 digs and 106 blocks. A native of Kaunas, Lithuania, Kurgonaite helped Lock Haven pace the NCAA in blocks per game in 2004 (3.83/set) and 2006 (3.06/ set), and in hitting percentage in 2006 (.317). A right-side hitter during her playing career, Kurgonaite was a 2007 NCAA Leadership Conference participant and was the co-president of the Lock Haven Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as a senior in 2007-08. “Inga brings a lot to the table in terms of her experience as a player and her success on both the national and international levels,” said Opalski when Kurgonaite joined the staff. “She has really taken the initiative to jump in and immediately impact the offensive and defensive production of our big people.”
Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. Bison Volleyball
The construction of the Kenneth Langone Athletics and Recreation Center specifically impacted the Bucknell volleyball program in a significant way. The relocation of the Bison men’s and women’s basketball teams to Sojka Pavilion left Davis Gym as the premier volleyball and wrestling facility. The venerable 1,000-seat arena was dedicated on June 13, 1938 and has hosted Bison athletic events for more than 70 years. The Davis Gym hardwood was recently refinished and painted with volleyball boundaries as its primary color scheme. The team’s spacious locker room and coaches offices are located just off the main playing floor. A new scoreboard was added in 2007, as well.

Patriot League Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. The Presidents’ Cup The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 23 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 16 times in its 20-year existence, including 12 of the last 13 years. The Presidents’ Cup is awarded annually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 23 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no postseason tournament, points are awarded based on regularseason standings.

Bucknell Volleyball Success in the Classroom Bucknell volleyball placed eight student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll last fall. Rachel Rodriguez led the Bison by earning a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during the 2009 fall semester. Recent graduate Lindsay Smith also made the list prior to being named the Patriot League Volleyball ScholarAthlete of the Year and earning a spot on the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team. The eight selections ranked Bucknell second among league teams for most student-athletes receiving accolades. The Patriot League recognized a total of 50 volleyball student-athletes for their academic success. To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must achieve a 3.2 grade-point average in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter. ◊ Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame ◊ KATIE STEELE ’96 is the only Bison volleyball player to be named to the All-Patriot League team four times. She was a two-year captain and graduated as the school record-holder in hitting percentage, aces and blocks. Most important, Steele, who was also a Patriot League Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-District selection, is credited for helping turn a struggling program into a league power. After compiling a 45-186 record from 1985-92, Bucknell went 63-35 in Steele’s sophomore, junior and senior years. The Bison were the most improved team in the country in 1993, and by Steele’s senior year team finished 26-7 and won its first Patriot League regular-season title with a 6-0 record. She entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2007. MELISSA WHARTON ’98 graduated with 10 school records and is considered one of the best players in program history. She is still the only Bison player to hit .400 in a season, and she did so three times. Wharton recorded a Bucknell and Patriot League-record .445 hitting percentage in 1995 (second-best in the nation that year), and she followed it up by hitting .410 in 1996 and .411 as a senior in 1997. She owns three of the top four single-season hitting percentages in Patriot League history, while her .400 career average is also the school and league record. Wharton’s 1,377 career kills was the school record for 10 years until being surpassed in 2007. She is also the Bucknell and Patriot League career leader in blocks with 631. Wharton was a three-time First Team All-Patriot League selection and earned the Christy Mathewson Award as the top senior athlete in her class. She entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009.

Bucknell left the ECC to be a charter member of the Patriot League in 1990. Prior to 1982 Bucknell’s women’s volleyball team competed in the AIAW, the precursor, for women’s athletics, to the NCAA.

KLARC/The Plan for Bucknell ◊ The Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center ◊ The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 16 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 20 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 118 Academic AllAmericans in 40 years and 118 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 20 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholarathlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.
Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife, Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The brand new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the spacious West Fields for softball, and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, including the new Phase III portion of the West Fields Project.
