2011-12 Bucknell Wrestling Being a Bison

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A BISON “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2011.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 21-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 14 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2010-11. It was the 14th straight year and the 17th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2010-11, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s rowing and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 11 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2010, Bucknell ranked No. 7 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 120.

A total of 421 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2010-11 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 259 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2011.

In addition to the 120 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 314 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 21 more in 2010-11.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

With six Patriot League championships in 2010-11, Bucknell has now earned 87 crowns in 21 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 93 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 511 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell Bison Athletics A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this “Leadership Summit” is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. BUCKNELL DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

Season Outlook

6

Youth will be the main theme for the Bucknell wrestling program in 201112. The Bison lost six seniors to graduation last May and this year’s team features eight freshmen, five sophomores, five juniors and just one senior. The Bison have lost a tremendous amount of talent the last two offseasons as the last two senior classes combined for 774 individual wins, 15 NCAA appearances, four All-America certificates, 21 EIWA placewinners, 32 NCAA victories, 132 EIWA dual wins and 51 team victories. Bucknell returns just five wrestlers who were even part-time starters a year ago: Zac Hancock (11 starts), Corey Lear (18), Joe McMullan (14), Stephen McPeek (6) and Alex Pellicciotti (11). Each of those veterans will be in the running for starting positions, but with plenty of talented youngsters on the roster, there is sure to be a number of lineups used by Bison seventh-year head coach Dan Wirnsberger. “This is an exciting time for our young team,” said Wirnsberger, who is second on the Bucknell all-time wins list with 51 victories over the last five seasons. “We have a lot of youth, and with our strength of schedule these guys will have the opportunity to make an impact on the national scene throughout the season. Our focus will be to train and compete as hard as we can and let the results take care of themselves.” Despite the youth, Bucknell will once again face a challenging schedule this year. The Bison kick off the season with a high-profile dual against Nebraska in Sojka Pavilion. They will also host Michigan State (Dec. 3), the midDecember Bison Duals featuring Central Michigan, Princeton and new EIWA member Sacred Heart, as well as February duals against EIWA foes American and Penn. Bucknell’s road slate will feature tournament competition at the Navy Classic and the Midlands Championships, as well as duals at Oklahoma State, Lehigh, Army and Lock Haven. No stranger to facing ranked foes, five of Bucknell’s initial 2011-12 opponents are ranked in the NWCA/USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll as Oklahoma State (No. 3), Lehigh (No. 6), American (t-No. 11), Central Michigan (No. 23) and Penn (No. 25) are listed in the top 25. The Bison have faced 26 ranked foes over the last five years, including seven in 2010-11. Bucknell will conclude the season with the EIWA Championships at Princeton and the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. 125 - Projected Starter ................... Austin Miller or Shawn Armato Former Bison Derek Reber started two of the last three years at 125 pounds and was a 2009 NCAA qualifier, but he transferred to 2011 national champion Penn State during the offseason, leaving the door open for others to fill the vacant position. Freshman Austin Miller, a three-time PIAA state placewinner, is the frontrunner to fill the void. He posted a strong 145-30 record during his career at Hempfield High School. Another freshman, Shawn Armato, could also wrestle at 125, but the Bison coaching staff thinks he might be a better fit at 133. 133 - Projected Starter ...................... Bob Hauser or Shawn Armato Sophomore Bob Hauser posted a 1-4 record in his rookie campaign, but seems to have turned the corner during the offseason and is expected to see the bulk of the action at 133 pounds. He won his first collegiate match at the Michigan State Open last November and wrestled in duals vs. No. 13 Rutgers and Liberty. Armato, who was a two-time Pennsylvania Prep state champion, will challenge Hauser. 141 - Projected Starter ........................................... Alex Pellicciotti After wrestling exclusively at 133 pounds last season, sophomore Alex Pellicciotti is expected to make the jump to a more natural 141 pounds this year. A wrestler who is always looking for a fall, Pellicciotti recorded an 8-12 overall mark last season, posting six bonus-point victories. He was 4-7 in duals and competed at the EIWA championships. Junior Zac Hancock, who owns a 23-22 career record, hoped to be in the mix, but recurring concussions have left the Bison coaching staff unsure of his availability this season. 149 - Projected Starter ........................ John Regan or Joe Orecchio While Bucknell has a lot of starting positions up for grabs, 149 pounds has perhaps the most competition with no fewer than four wrestlers aiming to replace two-time All-American and the program’s all-time wins leader Kevin LeValley. The lone senior on the team, John Regan, is one of the favorites, but he might also move up to 157, a weight he has competed at just once in his 59

career bouts. Regan is an incredible athlete who missed the 2010-11 campaign with an injury, but the Bucknell coaches think he is poised to make a run at All-America honors in his final season in Orange and Blue. Freshman Joe Orecchio could also see plenty of time at 149. A two-time state finalist in New Jersey, Orecchio was one of the best high school signees by the Bison in recent years and the coaching staff hopes he can translate that high school success to the college level. John Regan Juniors Derrik Russell and Jack Ingram, who have spent the first half of their Bison careers wrestling at lower weights, could also move into the lineup at 149. Russell, who is 20-26 in his career, competed at 125 as a freshman and 133 last year. He could also move back down to 141 to challenge Pellicciotti. Ingram, one of four team captains along with Regan, Russell and junior Joe McMullan, is called the team leader on and off the mat by assistant coach Dave Hoffman. “Jack might not have the credentials or statistics of some other guys on the roster, but there is no one that works harder and wants to be productive than him,” praised Wirnsberger. “We hope some of that desire will eventually pay off and put some notches in his win column.” 157 - Projected Starter ........................... John Regan or Ray Schlitt While Regan is one of the favorites to start at 149, he could be better utilized at 157, which is a weight class that features less depth. It will likely be the senior or sophomore Ray Schlitt, who transferred to Bucknell after one year at James Madison. Schlitt, who is a freshman by eligibility standards, is originally from Haddonfield, N.J. 165 - Projected Starter ...................... Corey Lear and Patrick Wales Junior Corey Lear, whose 44 career wins leads active Bison heading into 2011-12, is the incumbent starter at 165, but he will not be with the team during the first semester. He is expected to rejoin the squad Dec. 17 for the Bison Duals. In Lear’s absence, freshman Patrick Wales is expected to see action at 165. Wales was a Connecticut state champion as a senior and a four-year national qualifier. 174 - Projected Starter .......................................... Stephen McPeek Sophomore Stephen McPeek entered Bucknell last year as a highly touted prospect from Texas. He became one of two rookies, along with Alex Pellicciotti, to become a regular contributor in duals, posting a 12-10 overall mark with six starts. He committed himself during the offseason and Wirnsberger expects a breakout season from McPeek, who wrestled at 165 and 174 as a freshman. 184 - Projected Starter .................. Jamie Westwood or Tyler Lyster Sophomore Jamie Westwood is the early favorite to start at 184, although freshman Tyler Lyster will certainly push him for the spot. Westwood, a twotime all-state selection in New Jersey, was 2-2 in limited action as a rookie at 174 pounds. Also a New Jersey native, Lyster, who competed at 189 pounds in high school, is a great mat wrestler, according to Wirnsberger. 197 - Projected Starter ..............................................Joe McMullan McMullan split his time between 184 and heavyweight the last two years, rarely wrestling in his best weight class (197) due to the presence of 2011 NCAA qualifier Jay Hahn. This season, however, McMullan is expected to hold down the 197-pound starting spot after piling up 21 wins the past two years. He has plenty of high-level experience, having faced 10 nationally ranked opponents in his 49 career bouts. 285 - Projected Starter .....................................................Joe Stolfi Bucknell has struggled to find a consistent contributor at heavyweight over the past few years, but Wirnsberger thinks he might finally have a solid one in freshman Joe Stolfi, a three-time PIAA state qualifier and the Souderton Area High School record holder for career (140) and single-season wins (45). “Joe is one of the most athletic big guys in the country and should be competitive right out of the gate,” commented Wirnsberger. “He will only continue to develop and improve as the season moves along.”

Five EIWA Placewinners in 2010-11

2011-12 Bucknell Wrestling Bison Notebook • The Bucknell wrestling program was discontinued following the 200102 season, but was brought back in 2005 thanks in large part to a generous donation from Bill Graham ’62. • Bucknell has posted a 51-46-2 (.525) overall record since the reinstatement of the program. The Bison will wrestle their 100th match since reinstatement Nov. 10 vs. Nebraska. • Bucknell is 20-15-1 (.569) in EIWA duals since the reinstatement of the program. • Bucknell in 2011-12 will wrestle in Sojka Pavilion for a third consecutive year. The Bison hosted Iowa and Rutgers in a tri-meet in November 2009, and in March 2011 hosted the 107th EIWA Championships. The Bison will host Nebraska in a season-opening Nov. 10 dual in Sojka Pavilion. Bucknell is 1-1 all-time in the facility, splitting the 2009 duals with Iowa and Rutgers.

• Bucknell’s 2011-12 19-person roster consists of eight freshmen, five sophomores, five juniors and one senior. Eight states (Connecticut, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia) are represented. • Five Bison (Corey Lear - 44, John Regan - 36, Zac Hancock - 23, Joe McMullan - 21, Derrik Russell - 20) enter 2011-12 with at least 20 career victories. • This year’s Bison team is much less experienced than the 2010-11 edition. The 19 wrestlers on the 2011-12 roster have combined to wrestle 337 (168-169) college bouts. The 23 wrestlers on the roster entering 2010-11 had 917 (498-419) career bouts of experience. • Senior John Regan, along with juniors Jack Ingram, Joe McMullan and Derrick Russell were selected as 2011-12 team captains in the preseason. • Bucknell, in 2010-11, faced seven ranked opponents, the most since the reinstatement of the program. The Bison have now wrestled 26 ranked opponents over the last five years. Bucknell is 1-25 against ranked foes since the reinstatement of the program. The lone win over that span was a 17-16 win over No. 25 Columbia in February 2007. • Bucknell has had at least two NCAA qualifiers each of the last five years. Jay Hahn and Kevin LeValley qualified for and participated in the 2011 NCAA Championships. Hahn posted a 1-2 record at 197 pounds, while LeValley was 4-2 en route to a seventh-place finish and his second consecutive All-America honor at 149 pounds.

They are 9-3 in their last 12 home matches and are 25-10 at home since the beginning of the 2006-07 campaign. • Bucknell was a solid 7-4 against unranked opponents in 2010-11. The Bison are 50-21-2 since 2006-07 against foes that are not nationally ranked. • Bucknell used 13 different starting lineups in 2010-11, including 12 in its final 14 matches.

Lear is the only returning EIWA placewinner in 2011-12. • Bucknell head coach Dan Wirnsberger has guided the Bison to 51 victories over the last five years. He ranks second on the Bucknell all-time wins list, trailing only longtime Bison mentor Bobby Ferraro, who posted a 169-175-6 mark from 1974-97. • Bucknell has had eight different wrestlers (Jay Hahn, Eric Lapotsky, Kevin LeValley, David Marble, Derek Reber, Andy Rendos, Shane Riccio, David Thompson) combine for 18 NCAA appearances over the last five years. • 2011 Bucknell graduate Kevin LeValley finished his career first on the program’s wins list (127) and eighth on the career winning percentage ledger (.760). He also set the school record for single-season victories (42 in 2009-10). • Bucknell has finished in the top five at two of the last three EIWA Championships. The Bison tied for third place with Penn at the 2009 event and in 2010 they finished fourth, before posting an eighth-place finish in 2011. HEAD COACH MICHIGAN STATE ’95 SEVENTH YEAR

• 51-46-2 Bucknell Record • 77-68-2 Career Record

Dan Wirnsberger, who officially became the 15th coach of the Bucknell wrestling program on May 10, 2005, enters his seventh year at the helm of the Orange and Blue in 2010-11. Hired to guide Bucknell’s program back into the national spotlight after a four-year hiatus where it was not a varsity sport, Wirnsberger has succeeded and currently ranks second on the Bison career wins list with 51. After spending a transitional year recruiting and laying the groundwork for a successful program, Wirnsberger brought Bucknell back onto the mat in 2006-07 with flying colors. Under Wirnsberger’s direction, the 2006-07 Bison returned to the mat in grand fashion, setting a school record for dual-meet victories by compiling a record of 12-9-1, 3-3-1 in the EIWA, including a 17-16 win over nationally ranked Columbia. At the EIWA tournament, he led the Orange and Blue to a ninth-place finish out of 14 schools and saw three Bucknell grapplers earn bids to the NCAA Championships. Facing a tougher schedule in its second season back as a varsity program at Bucknell, Wirnsberger helped the squad to a 9-11-1 mark in 2007-08. The Bison posted a 4-4 mark against EIWA competition. Once again, three wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships and Bucknell moved up one spot to eighth place at the competitive EIWA Championships. The Bison program took a major stride forward in 2008-09 as Wirnsberger guided Bucknell to a tie for third at the EIWA Championships and helped a schoolrecord six wrestlers earn NCAA berths. Additionally, Andy Rendos became the first Bison to earn All-America honors in 14 years as he placed fifth at NCAAs in the 165-pound weight class. As a team, Bucknell registered 11 wins, giving it a three-year win total of 32, the best stretch in program history. More milestones were accomplished in 2009-10 as Wirnsberger saw two of his wrestlers earn All-America honors, marking a first for the program. The Bison also tied a school record with 12 victories and finished with an unbeaten EIWA mark. Wirnsberger guided the team to its second consecutive top-five finish at the EIWA Championships as it claimed fourth in the team standings. Highlighting the weekend was Rendos’ individual title in the 165-pound bracket, making him the first EIWA champion in program history. Wirnsberger helped LeValley duplicate Rendos’ feat by winning the 149-pound EIWA title and earn his second consecutive All-America citation last year. He won the EIWA crown at Sojka Pavilion as Wirnsberger oversaw a program that successfully hosted one of the major conference tournaments in the country. Eight Bison have combined for 17 NCAA Championships berths under Wirnsberger’s guidance. A three-time wrestling All-American at Michigan State University, Wirnsberger previously served as the head coach of Bloomsburg University’s Division I program from 2002 to 2005. As head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger qualified 10 student-athletes for the NCAA Tournament, including six in 2005, his final season at the helm, and he coached the program’s first-ever Olympic Trials qualifier. He helped four Bloomsburg wrestlers capture Eastern Wrestling League titles and six win PSAC crowns. Named the 2005 PSAC Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to the team title for the first time since 1990, Wirnsberger’s recruiting classes were ranked 14th and 19th, respectively, in 2003 and 2004, while his first two recruiting classes at Bucknell were ranked 14th and 25th by Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.I.N.). In 2004-05, Bloomsburg posted a 10-6 dual-meet record (4-2 EWL) and crowned three EWL champions while finishing fifth at the league tournament. Prior to becoming head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger spent six years as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, where he helped coach a team that featured three All-Americans and finished in the top-25 at the NCAA Tournament in 2000 (19th) and 2001 (23rd). The Hokies qualified a school-record five wrestlers for NCAAs in 2000, and the following year the program was invited to compete at the National Team Duals at Penn State. At both Bloomsburg and Virginia Tech, Wirnsberger gained extensive experience in the areas of national recruiting, fundraising and summer camp administration. A 1995 graduate of Michigan State with a degree in criminal justice, Wirnsberger posted a 35-8 record and was the Big Ten Champion and NCAA runner-up at 158 pounds in 1995. That was his third of three straight All-America plaques, and he earned team Most Valuable Wrestler honors. Overall in his career, Wirn-

sberger compiled a record of 120-44, the third-most wins in school history. In NCAA competition, he logged 11 victories for the Spartans in three trips to nationals. During his career at Michigan State, the team went from a struggling program to a 12th-place national ranking his sophomore year, 25th his junior year and third in the nation his senior season. A three-year captain of the Spartans, Wirnsberger continued his wrestling career at the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club while training for the 1997 World Team Trials. He qualified for the trials after placing sixth at the USA Senior Freestyle Tournament, his first senior competition. Participating at a higher weight class of 167 pounds, WirnsbergDan Wirnsberger er defeated such renowned opponents as two-time NCAA champion Marcus Mollica of Arizona State and Iowa’s NCAA champion Darryl Weber. Wirnsberger began his coaching career with the Mason (Mich.) Youth Wrestling Program. He later moved back to his native South Carolina, where he served as head wrestling coach at Greer High School. In addition to his head coaching duties, Wirnsberger was the junior varsity football coach and taught classes for autistic students at Greer Middle School. Wirnsberger resides in Lewisburg, Pa., with his wife, Dana, a former athletic trainer at Bucknell, and their three sons, Cade (7), Max (4) and Chase (2).

Five EIWA Placewinners in 2010-11

2011-12 Bucknell Wrestling Hall of Fame

BUCKNELL ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME - WRESTLING MEMBERS The Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to honor the very best in the history of Bison athletics. Five former wrestlers are among the 223 outstanding members whose contributions to Bucknell athletics are forever preserved in the Hall of Fame. Ed Curran (’88) - Ed Curran was a three-time East Coast Conference wrestling champion during his time as a member of the Bison. Hall of Famer Tom Scotton is the only other Bucknell wrestler to make that claim. He qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times and was a quarterfinalist in 1986. As a senior, Curran posted a 23-4 record at 134 pounds, and he finished with an impressive career record of 71-20-1, which was then the second-highest victory total at Bucknell. He was the Outstanding Wrestler at both the Bloomsburg Invitational and Cornell Invitational in 1987. Curran was just as successful off the wrestling mat, where he made the Dean’s List every semester, won the prestigious University Prize for Men and was a Second Team Academic All-American. He also earned the ECAC Medallion and graduated magna cum laude. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2005. Bobby Ferraro (’94) - A first-ballot Hall of Fame choice and Bucknell’s first two-time wrestling All-American, Bobby Ferarro graduated with an impressive 118-211 career mat record and four East Coast Wrestling Association gold medals. He became just the third grappler in school history to earn All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 177-pound class at the NCAA Championships during his senior season, and then he repeated the distinction with a seventh-place finish as a graduate student in 1995. Ferraro finished 31-8 in 1994, falling just one victory shy of the school record, and he tied a 37-year-old school mark by recording pins in five straight matches. With a 30-6 record in 1995, Ferraro broke the school career victory record and finished second all-time with 44 falls. In becoming just the second man to win four ECWA titles, Ferraro in 1995 also helped the Bison to their second-ever team championship. He was the ECWA Championships Outstanding Wrestler in 1992 and never lost a conference bout. A two-time team captain, he won the Christy Mathewson Award as Bucknell’s top senior athlete. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2004.

Thomas M. Marchetti (’91) - Tom Marchetti was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, and as a sophomore in 1989 he became Bucknell’s very first wrestling All-American when he placed fourth at 167 pounds. Marchetti earned three consecutive East Coast Cconference titles from 1989-91, and he was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 1990 ECC Championships. He graduated as Bucknell’s all-time winningest wrestler with a 106-24 mark. His 31 victories in 1990-91 were second-most in program history at the time, while his 45-7 dual-match record was third-best all-time. Marchetti remains one of only five Bucknell wrestlers to win 80 percent of his matches over a four-year career, and he also set school marks for pins in a season (19) and career (41). Marchetti was a Freshman All-American in his first year at Bucknell and was nationally ranked in each of his final three seasons. A Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top senior athlete in his class, Marchetti was a two-year team captain. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009. Thomas M. Scotton (’78) - Named All-East by National Mat News in 1978 and selected Bucknell’s outstanding wrestler four times, Scotton never lost a dual collegiate match on his way to three ECC championships and appearances at the NCAA Championships and holds several Bison mat records. Twice co-captain, he had a career record of 89-4-1. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

Kaufmann’s career dual match wrestling record was 17-12-2, and as a senior he won Bucknell’s Outstanding Multiple Sport Athlete Award and the Christy Mathewson Award as the outstanding athlete in the senior class. He began his football career at Bucknell as a fullback, but was moved to defensive end at the beginning of his junior year. He was twice named to the All-Pennsylvania second team and All-Middle Atlantic Conference first team at the new position. The top accounting student in his Bucknell class and a cum laude graduate, Kaufmann received an MBA from Harvard and later returned to the ministry. EIWA HISTORY

Andy Rendos won the first individual EIWA title in program history in 2010.

The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA), as it is known today, had its beginning in 1904. Then, students from a number of schools in the East met and proposed the creation of a group whose responsibility it would be to organize intercollegiate wrestling as a formal sport. One year later wrestlers from Columbia, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale competed in the first EIWA tournament. Under the management of J. Edward Weisenfluh, a student at Penn, the first tournament was held April 7, 1905, in the Gymnasium of Weightman Hall on the Penn campus in Philadelphia. At this first meeting the Intercollegiate Wrestling Association was born. Thereafter, three meetings were held each year, once just before the tournament, once just after the meet, and once in October at which a new tourney site was selected. No team scoring was kept at the first EIWA tournament in 1905. All that was recorded was the total number of bouts won by each wrestler, in the following weight classes: 115, 125, 135, 145, 158, 175 and heavyweight. Based on that system, Yale won, followed in order by Columbia, Princeton and Pennsylvania. Remaining strictly a student organization for three and one-half decades, the group gradually assumed the name “Eastern” to distinguish itself from the facultycontrolled “Western” Association, now known as the Big Ten. Ultimately, after the 1939 meet, the students capitulated to faculty control, and the Eastern College Athletic Conference, organized in 1938, has since provided formal structure for the EIWA, which now functions as an allied entity of the ECAC. “The Easterns” have survived both as the oldest intercollegiate wrestling organization and as a unique athletic event with unusually widespread spectator appeal. Today, membership in the EIWA numbers 14 schools: American, Army, Brown, Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Lehigh, Navy, Penn, Princeton, Rutgers and Sacred Heart.
