Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur. Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands. Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of five Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the fall of 2010 the CWPA Men’s Water Polo Eastern Championship took place inside the gorgeous facility.

What it Means to

BE A BISON “... THE PURSUIT OF ATHLETICS IN COLLEGE NEED NOT INTERFERE WITH A FELLOW’S STUDIES, AND IF YOU GIVE A BOY A WELL-DEVELOPED BODY HIS BRAIN WILL GET THE BENEFIT OF IT.” — CHRISTY MATHEWSON, IN HIS BOOK WON IN THE NINTH, WRITTEN IN 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2011.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 21-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 14 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2010-11. It was the 14th straight year and the 17th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2010-11, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s rowing and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 11 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2010, Bucknell ranked No. 7 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 120.

A total of 421 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2010-11 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 259 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2011.

In addition to the 120 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 314 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 21 more in 2010-11.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

With six Patriot League championships in 2010-11, Bucknell has now earned 87 crowns in 21 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 93 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 511 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell Bison Athletics A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist studentathletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

BUCKNELL ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League’s Presidents’ Cup studentathletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

SEASON OUTLOOK A new coaching staff, veterans in new roles and a talented freshman class are examples of how the Bucknell water polo program is entering a new era. The change began at the top when former longtime Brown assistant coach John McBride was hired as the Bison’s new head coach. He proceeded to persuade Marty Matthies, a national championship winner during his playing days at Cal, to join the staff. Bucknell has 14 letterwinners returning, including five seniors, but it will be a new-look Bison squad in the pool as many of those veterans will take on greatly increased roles in 2011. Nearly one-third of Bucknell’s goals last year were scored by Honorable Mention All-Americans Richie Hyden and Howie Kalter. Both of those stars, as well as classmates Sean Coghlan and Miles Gilhuly, exhausted their eligibility, leaving plenty of holes to be plugged. “With the loss of a really good senior class that was a big part of Bucknell Water Polo the last few years, there is certainly a lot of players that are going to have to step up and fill new roles,” stated McBride, who helped the Brown men’s team to a 121-77 record in his seven years as an assistant. “Already we have seen guys learning to play different positions, some of which they had never played before. We have a very athletic team and they are all very smart players. I think you are going to see a very good team, with the emphasis on team.” Even with the loss of the three players who earned All-America honors during their careers, Bucknell earned a No. 19 national ranking in the preseason. The Bison posted four consecutive winning seasons before dipping to 13-16 last fall, but McBride will look to build upon the squad’s second-place finish at the Southern Championships, its best since 1998. “We are definitely a lot faster than I was expecting,” commented McBride, who was impressed with the physical shape of the Bison at the beginning of preseason practice. “I like to instill a certain level of toughness. I really believe in being mentally tough and physically tough. I am really trying to raise the level of intensity.” Among the most important players to help McBride with raising the intensity are senior co-captains Beau Caillouette and Spencer Richley. Caillouette earned the team’s Most Improved Award last year after finishing fourth on the squad with a career-high 46 points on 33 goals and 13 assists. He also drew 26 ejections and started 22 contests, the second-most among returning Bison. Richley was a valuable reserve player who tallied 21 goals and dished out nine assists while recording 16 steals and drawing 11 ejections. “I expect Beau and Spencer to make sure everybody is staying positive and that we are all focused on the same goal,” explained McBride. “This is their senior year. They can’t have it back and they understand that. They are really big motivators.” Junior Brian Barron is the team’s leading returning scorer with 50 points on 31 goals and 19 assists. He took on an increased scoring load, nearly doubling his point output from 2009. Additionally, Barron was the squad’s top sprinter, winning 42 of 74. “Brian is going to fill some positions in the pool he didn’t Brian Barron play last year and that might impact his scoring numbers a little bit,” predicted McBride. “Richie and Howie drew so much attention last year, so we will see how Brian reacts in more of a leadership scoring role. He can’t try to be the leading scorer, though. He needs to be the best teammate.” Junior goalkeeper Matt Napleton, the team’s co-Defensive MVP last year, will certainly play a much bigger role in 2011 than 2010. Last fall he split time in cage with the now-graduated Gilhuly.

www.BucknellBison.com

This year Napleton is the clear No. 1 in the net, although freshman Keegan Williams will push him. NapleSpencer Richley ton saved 48.1 percent of the shots he faced a year ago and stopped 77 shots in 328 minutes played. He enters his third campaign with 102 career stops. “I certainly believe Matt is one of the top goalies in the East, if not the top goalie,” praised McBride, who is focused on having a strong defense. “First of all, his wingspan is about 7-feet, 8-inches. You can’t teach his height and wingspan. He has a good IQ for the game and he understands what he needs to do on the defensive end of the pool.” The Bison’s five-person senior class will be counted on for plenty of leadership. In addition to Caillouette and Richley, this includes Nick Barnett, Sam Fiske and Daniel Schwartz. The physical Schwartz and Barnett each appeared in all 29 games in 2010. Schwartz, who McBride expects will play a number of positions, earned 19 starts and tallied seven goals and nine assists to go along with 15 steals. Barnett came off the bench and finished third on the team with 23 steals while also netting 10 goals. This year’s sophomore class had a number of players make impacts as rookies last season. As is the case with the entire team, those youngsters will need to step into larger roles this fall as the seven-person class combined for just six starting assignments in 2010. Jack Else made the biggest offensive impact of the group, scoring 21 goals and tallying nine assists to finish in a tie for seventh on the team in points (30). Trevor Reitz, who is also a member of the Bison swimming & diving team, excelled in a sprinter role last year, winning 24 of 31 sprints. One of three Florida natives on the roster, he also recorded 21 steals and drew 13 ejections. McBride expects Alex Nowlin to make a big jump as he enters his second season as a Bison. The Coto de Caza, Calif., native tallied 15 goals and was seventh on the team with 10 assists in 2010. “I see Alex stepping in and being a leader,” said McBride. “He is playing a position he has never played before and we are going to use him all over the pool. I see him having a big impact.” Fellow sophomores Julian Colina and 2010 team Rookie of the Year Mike Kimble should also see plenty of increased playing time, according to McBride. Kimble was one of 12 Bison to reach double figures in goals a year ago, while Colina chipped in eight points to the scoring column in 10 games. Andrew Somers, who played in four games as a freshman, is another member of the large sophomore class. In addition to all the returning players that will have increased roles, McBride will have the luxury of a talented four-person freshman class. “I am excited about the freshman class,” commented McBride. “Buck Doyle is a big body. We’ll use him all over the place.” Greg Norton, the younger brother of sophomore Stephen Norton, and Ken Wattana round out the list of rookies, joining Williams and Doyle. McBride helped the Brown teams to a winning percentage of .578 and he plans to do better at Bucknell. “We want to win every time we step on the pool deck,” said a fiery McBride. “I can’t stand losing and I find nothing remotely good about losing a game. If we play the No. 1 team in the nation I expect to win. I think we build from game to game and treat each game individually. It’s a long season. Ultimately the goal is for the team to win the Southern Championships, go to Easterns with a high seed, and then beat everybody at Easterns and go to NCAAs.”

COACHING STAFF John McBride Head Coach Rhode Island ’92 First Season Career Record: 0-0 John McBride, who served as an assistant coach at Brown the last seven years, was named the head men’s and women’s water polo coach at Bucknell on May 18, 2011. McBride, a 1992 graduate of Rhode Island who was a four-year starter in goal as a member of the water polo program, also has an extensive background with the U.S. National Team, serving as head coach of the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team since 2009. While at Brown, McBride helped guide the Bears to unprecedented success. The men’s squad captured the 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division title, its first conference crown in nearly 25 years. Additionally, the team went undefeated in regular-season conference play in 2008 and finished as high as fourth at the Eastern Championship. On the women’s side, McBride led the Bears to back-to-back ECAC Championship titles in 2009 and 2010 and a fourth-place finish at the Eastern Championship, the best showing at Brown since 2001. Both the men’s and women’s squads appeared regularly in the national top-20 rankings during McBride’s tenure, which also featured 43 All-Northern Division selections and 22 All-East players. Additionally, three Bears earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Brown’s men’s team has had the highest team grade-point average in the nation for four years, while the women have ranked in the top three nationally four times. “I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to be the head coach of the men’s and women’s water polo programs at Bucknell,” said McBride at the time of his hiring. “I am looking forward to settling into Lewisburg and getting started with the 2011-12 seasons. Bucknell prides itself on balancing academics and athletics and having coached in a very rigorous academic environment for the last seven years should make the transition much easier. I am very anxious to get on the pool deck and begin coaching the talented student-athletes that are member of both the men’s and women’s programs at Bucknell.” A goalie on the U.S. National “B” Team in 1993, McBride has become a recognizable face in National Team circles. In addition to his duties as the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team head coach, he was recently named the head coach of the Southeast Zone Olympic Development Program. McBride has also served as an evaluator and coach at the women’s Speedo Top 40 Camp at Harvard. Among his many responsibilities with the National Teams, McBride evaluates and coaches the top 16 men from the East Coast to compete for spots on the U.S. National Team. He has also coached regional teams comprised of the best Northern California collegiate players and helps the U.S. Junior National Team Coaches bring the best players to represent the U.S. in international competitions. An accomplished goalie during his playing days at Rhode Island, McBride was a three-time First Team All-

6

New England selection and was twice a First Team All-East honoree. Following his graduation from Rhode Island with a degree in speech communications, McBride attended the Rhode Island Department of Corrections Academy and the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility Corrections Academy and eventually graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy in 1996. He then served as a patrolman and SWAT officer for the North Providence Police from 1996 to 2004. McBride got his start in coaching in 2001 when he founded the Newport Lady Tritons Water Polo Club. He proceeded to coach the club, which was made up of high school-aged players, until 2003. At that time, McBride founded the Ocean State Masters Swim Team, which featured more than 100 athletes who competed in master’s swim meets and triathlons all over the world. McBride’s most recent start-up project was the Bruno Water Polo Club, which he began as a non-profit organization in Providence, R.I., in 2007. The club gives inner-city youth an opportunity to enjoy the sport of water polo. McBride and his wife, Sam, have two daughters, Grace (11) and Lily (9).

Allen Mardis Athletic Trainer Southern Illinois ’06 Third Year at Bucknell Allen Mardis, a member of the United State Marine Corps from 1998-2003, joined the Bison training staff in 2009 after spending three years as a graduate assistant athletic training intern at Fresno State. He works closely with the Bucknell water polo, tennis and men’s basketball programs. While in California, Mardis worked closely with the Bulldogs’ softball team, organized and administered preseason physicals for more than 600 student-athletes and had roles in medical coverage for the football team during preseason practice and during home games. In the summer of 2008, Mardis was an athletic trainer for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Rookie Level team. He got his first taste of professional baseball in 2005 when he served as an athletic training intern for the Schaumburg Flyers. A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Mardis earned an associate’s degree from Campbell University in 2002 and a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois in 2006. He completed his master’s degree from Fresno State in August 2009.

Jerry Shreck Strength & Conditioning Coordinator E. Stroudsburg ’96 10th Year at Bucknell The strength & conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator. A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition. A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness.

HISTORY SCOTT SCHULTE AWARD The Scott Schulte Award was established in 1980 in honor of the two-time water polo All-American and is presented annually to “the individual who contributes the most to Bucknell water polo.” Last season, 2011 Bucknell graduate Richie Hyden was the recipient of the award. An All-East water polo selection four straight years (1977-1980), Schulte led Bucknell to four Eastern championships, and set an all-time NCAA water polo career scoring record with 586 goals. The high scorer in four straight NCAA Tournaments (the only player to accomplish this feat) and holder of the career record of 50 goals in NCAA championships, Schulte played on Bucknell teams that had a combined record of 114-15-3, and he was a Second Team All-American in 1979 and 1980. He was the only player outside of California selected to those All-America squads. He was twice selected to the AAU All-America First Team in water polo, and seven times in his career finished in the top six of an East Coast Conference Swimming Championship event. He won Bucknell’s Christy Mathewson Award, which recognizes the top athlete of the senior class, in 1981. DICK RUSSELL - CWPA HALL

OF

FAME

The Collegiate Water Polo Association announced that former Bucknell men’s water polo and swimming coach Dick Russell, along with Richard Hunkler of Slippery Rock, would compose the initial class inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame in 2002. Both Russell and Hunkler laid the foundation for the organization that exists today and were instrumental in its development for almost 20 years. Russell served Bucknell as an associate professor of physical education and developed a local swim class program. It was there he founded a water polo club in 1968, which continued until 1977, when the team achieved varsity status. Between 1977 and 1986, Russell’s water polo teams tallied an amazing record of 223-68-4. This consistent success made Russell the first coach in Bucknell history to record more than 100 victories in two sports, swimming and water polo. Under Russell the water polo teams won four Eastern Championships and competed in the NCAA Championship five times. He was named Eastern Water Polo Coach of the Year in 1985. Although it seemed minor at the time, one of his biggest achievements has had a tremendous impact on the sport throughout the country. Russell was the founder of the Mid-Atlantic Conference, now known as the Collegiate Water Polo Association. Originally including only a few teams, his pioneer work in establishing this league laid the foundation for the nationwide conference that boasts over 220 teams today. In 1968, Russell began his tenure at Bucknell as head swim coach and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1994. While at the helm, he led the men’s swim program to a 154-121 record in dual meets, along with 11 conference championships. He was also named a Master Coach by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association in 1978. Russell began his coaching career at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio, amassing an 85-14 dual meet record before being named head swimming and golf coach, as well as a football assistant at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. While at Kenyon, Coach Russell won 33 of 52 dual meets and four Ohio Athletic Conference Championships in his years as coach. Russell was inducted into the Bucknell University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 and was presented with a plaque commemorating his contributions to the Bison water polo and swimming programs in January 2007. Russell passed away in April of 2008 at the age of 75. In the summer of 2009, it was announced that Dan ’78 and Chris (Peterjohn ’76) Richards had pledged $1.5 million to the Bucknell men’s and women’s water polo programs in honor of Dick Russell. BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY RECEIVES MAJOR DONATION FROM DAN AND CHRIS RICHARDS TO BOLSTER MEN’S AND WOMEN’S WATER POLO PROGRAMS The men’s and women’s water polo programs at Bucknell University will be greatly bolstered thanks to a $1.5 million commitment made by Dan ‘78 and Chris (Peterjohn ‘76) Richards in the summer of 2009. The pledge was made in honor of Coach Dick Russell, who was at the helm of the swimming and diving programs from 1968 to 1994 and created the water polo program at Bucknell, coaching the men’s team from its inception as a varsity sport in 1977 until 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Richards were swimmers under Coach Russell during their years at Bucknell. As the Richards’ multi-year pledge is paid, an endowment will be built that generates funds to enhance Bucknell’s men’s and women’s varsity water polo programs by increasing and stabilizing the resources available for the coaches, staff and student-athletes. The Russell Endowment will provide a lasting memorial honoring the lifetime contributions of the late Hall of Fame mentor to Bucknell’s varsity water polo and swimming and diving programs. It will complement a similar endowment established for the swimming and diving programs in 2002 by William D. Dearstyne ‘62 to honor former coach and director of athletics Bob Latour, and further underscores the successful tradition of the varsity aquatics programs at Bucknell.

MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE Dan ‘78 and Chris (Peterjohn ‘76) Richards have created a matching challenge program for friends, fans and alumni of Bucknell water polo and swimming and diving to help increase long-term support for these varsity sports and honor former Bison coach Dick Russell. Up to a limit of $250,000, the Richards will accelerate payment of their multi-year $1.5 million pledge to the new “Russell Endowment” by matching qualifying gifts and pledges made by others, as follows:

CWPA INFORMATION The Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association. The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow.

THE PLAN

FOR

BUCKNELL

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
